3 . most animal by products can be used for attractants . you can take some chicken intestine raw type, add some fresh water to it and pour the mixture in a sieve and put the basin under it as the chicken intestine sieve through. The liquid part enters the basin under the sieve, you will see a foul smell .is that smell that attracts catfish when , making your local feed, add this water to it ..this is an attractant its the smell that attracts them ..its like maggi in our food ... You can use fish with water and sieve .. you can use most animals by products as your attractants ..it will make your fish want to accept your local feed better 4. TO me i feed 2 times daily, very early in the morning between 7 and 8 am and towards evening between 7pm to 8pm, why is that, catfish in particular are photophobic means they dwell better in dark ..they are more active when natural lights are down or not up yet ... so this the time they use most of there energy cause they are more active , so when they feed early the feed help them sustain the energy lost during there most active time .. u can feed 3 times if ur system permits but best fcr is got when u feed, when natural light eg sun ,are down or not up . In nature catfish hunts for pray at night thats why u call them cat they are nuctional in nature 5.. Research has proven that when fish is 400g there growth rate decreases, this does not mean they dont grow but they grow slower than when the are fingerlings juvenile or jumbo .. so thats why u have to have a good feed formula reduced in price but have the balance diet needed for growth ... so fcr actually increase as they get more than 400 g but we need fcr to be reduced to make more profit so for grow out , 600 g and above a good cheap formula will make ur profit better ...

2, to enhance u can use blood meal , feather meal , chcken ofal , fishoil , etc they come cheaper

1.. foreign and local to me are the same, fish is fish every were either foreign or local fish is fish ..the only problem with local is that some sellers mix there local feed with other adultrated material just to increase the volume ..that is why people pre fare the foreign but if u get good locally made fish feed to me its thesame.

If your water have iron just get any little drum like the blue drum used for chemical add some silica sand in it LIKE BAR BEACH SAND :::: channel your water from your water source to pass through it before going to your vat or concrate pond ....

Please, my fishes are still dying, I applied 2 satchels of oxytetracycline and good quantity of ashes that was Sieved of charcoals on Tuesday morning and stopped feeding them as well, I noticed they have stopped dying that same afternoon and decided I would watch them till the following morning to see if dey will still die before giving them food again which dey didn't so I started giving them food on Wednesday morning, by evening dt I came to feed, I noticed a quantity of them have died, so I didn't give any food again but they are still dying, dis morning and dis evening, please what else can I use to stop this mortality, good quality and quantity of water is entering the pond so I don't think it has to do with water.

Try to repeat the treatment process again , since u said it worked and they stopped dieing, this time, increase the quantity of the medication and allow it to stay longer before topping your water . It may be the medication quantity was small or the time you left it to work on your fishes was less, also try to check if your feed is not the problem, since they die when you feed ..there are many adultrated foreign feed, or if you are using local feed.if its not properly dried it can cause sickness also .You can decide to change your feed or buy somewere else ... Remember reduce your water very low before applying the medication after some hours top it up with fresh new water ..UPDATE US YOUR RESULT :::THEY WILL BE FINE AND OK GOODLUCK

To culture artemia in an hatchery this is a complete topic on its own . its what i will have to explain on another day as a topic, cause first you need to know how to construct an artemia hatchery tank ... temperature oxygen ferterlizers organic or inorganic but just like the method mr robonski stated out in his new hatchery...This is a simple and easier method . You can culture zooplanktons in a small earthen ponds , by putting dry chicken waste in a sack and deeping it in a small earthen pond after 3 weeks .After then zooplanktons bloom as in reprodution of zooplanktons free food for your fries. u can harvest ur zooplanktons by using a zooplankton net take it and pour in your vat, you will see how fast . your fries grows faster when they feed on life zooplankton....2.. to keep your water temperature constant , buy an aquarium water heater...this heater increases the water temperature gradually without changing the molecular structure of the water or if u cant get that , get a bottle water disinfect it by washing it with formaline or other disinfectant but dont use soap .Pour in it boiled water and stand it up at the edges of your vat. in your vat u can use 3 to 4 water bottles depends on the size of your vat .The bottle will gradually reflect heat energy into water in your vat gradually without the fishes noticing a fast change. This will help the fish not to have shock based on sudden temperature change .. so when u check your temperature and see its between 28 and 30 degree u can remove the bottles one by one gradually orelse, when ur temperature goes higher than the recommended temperature they start to experience stress also 3..check any laboratory equipments sellers or a good pharmacy you will get water termometer there

For swollen stomach and hanging ... Solution low ur water in your pound and add asolution of epson salt or normal salt in water .its a bacteria infection ... pour the salt solution on them for few hours and increase the water on them gradually they will be ok ... hanging can be caused by the swollen stomach or any of the following general mis practice 1, poluted watter 2 . over crowded fish 3 . lack of oxygen in water: I think you will know which of these is pb with your fish hanging....GOODLUCK

First and foremost, from the biochemistry viewpoint, nitrogenous waste are expelled in 3 forms (Uric acid, Ammonia and Urea).
Uric acid is the means reptiles and birds excrete nitrogenous waste as a result of water conservation; that's why their excrete is always dry and u find a whitish stuff.

The convenient form for man is urea and its less toxic but ammonia is highly toxic and this is the means fish excrete their nitrogenous waste. That why by nature they are in water and being that its a pond, the water isn't free flowing the ammonia accumulates and causes their death with the number of fish and size taken into consideration so frequent change of water is advised.

From my experience (we have a pond at the back of the house for domestic consumption)
We use concrete pond and being that cement is used, we soacked the pond for like two weeks by filling it with water to kill the effect of limestone which is harmful to the fish.

Before stocking, we wash the pond with salt which plays same role as the drug the poster mentioned then fill after washing with salt before stocking.

Early sorting is good like the OP said as there is competition but it is worthy of note that they do eat themselves (carniballistic in nature). We stocked 500 fingerlings in our present stock; when we sorted after 1month, we were left the less than 350. Vital feeds makes d water small so we stopped when we tried. We use coppens now.

We used to record mortality when we started cus we always leave the water in the pond for 2days bt since we started changing water everyday, mortality is no more.

We wash our pond like every 2-3wks when they are like 2months+ because of algae growth.

Very lovely information but to chip in something changing water everyday may be too stressful for the fish it may affect there growth rate . i will advice you to use flow through for your concrete pond . you can flow through it for 3 to 4 hours daily and ur fish will do very fine ... for those using flow through on concrete pounds, construct the type in which the water coming in the ponds will be higher than the ponds, at least 3 meters above the concrate ponds it makes the water well oxygenated there by aerating at same time giving them fresh new water GOODLUCK

If your problem of mass mortality is not water, and not weather then definately its the feed . For best water quality for newly hatched fries, maintain 7 to 7.5 ph and water between 28 degree and 30 degree...Also check if your water has ions ..if it does have ions your fries will die For hatchery business u need take your water to the lab for good analysis of your water before comencing fish hatchery orelse u just waste your hard earn money ...Solution to that is, to get an ion reduction chamber :: Its just a drum with silica sand in it just like the type mr robonski showed us ... to take care of the ions in your water you flow your water from your water source throug the drum of silica sand down to your vat ... For weather problems , using indoors does not guarantee temperature is ok, always check your water temperature at least 3 times a day . to ensure its ok ...if u want i can teach u an effective way to keep your water temperature constant . Because rapid change in temperature can also give u mass mortality ... If the artemia is the problem you can culture your own artemia i can also elaborate on it if u are intrested or u can use this simple but very effective method . Boil an egg take the yolk out and take a little bowl of water not up to a litre of water , squeeze the egg in a clean white handcarchief and dip it in the bowl of half litre. for few minutes
After u see its well dissolve . dip ur hand in the bowl take the mixture of egg yolk and water and sprinkle it in your vat you will see the 3 day old fries coming up to feed on them ... that way no fear of bad adoltrated artemia u can feed them this way for 6 to 7 days before introducing the 0.2 mm coopens . they will grow very well....If u have any area you dont understand , then ask will try to elaborate GOODLUCK:::

It depends on your funds available ..you can buy tapolin and cover each of your ponds .it will serve almost just the same as roofing

Hmmmm... My advice for fish farmers here dont go buying every ingredient u see in every ones formula ..i have seen people paste formula containing maize, indomie and cassava flour together.....some containing molasis and flour together ... and some containing .. palm kanel cake and cotton seed cake together...Well i want us to know that, in fish and other animal production , is all just about converting one form of protein as in feed to another form of protein as in our fish product . So we should always try to make sure the cost of feed protein is not costlier than the actual fish itself, or else, we run at a lost . there are no stories about it ... How can we use maize indome and cassava flour together ..this is wrong, cause they are all starch, i mean carbohydrate its same nutrient , they all give to your fish . Its like eating eba ,fufu , and amala they may taste different ,but , they give same starch or energy to the body so why waste money buying 3 different ingredient with same end product .As a business man or profit making fish farmer , just check out of the 3 ingredients the one that is cheapest in your loccality and use it ...They practically give the same. Important is all other factors are done well like feed quality quantity , time of feeding to get the best fcr , temperature and water quality . its same result lets not break our heads over formula lol........... What we should do is that , ,both 3 ingredients are good , so as wise fish farmer we will compare the 3 prices in our locality cause feeds varies in prices depends on, what your locality have in bulk and see which is cheapest per kg and use it. Dont just mix every ingredient in the feed mill because u see mr A doing it and so you want to do the same .One ingredient to serve a source of nutrient is ok ... so dont use molasis and flour both are good binding agent dont use pkc and cotton seed cake they are both source of oil : use only the cheapest one nutrient source at a time ..it will reduce your cost of production. Why do u think some people buy fingerlings from same source and 1 person makes profit and the other finish all his money making ambigious feed , there by finishing there profit on feed .. We replace fish meal with soya meal and other source of protein because of the high cost of fish meal but we cant replace fish meal 100 percent cause there source are different ...fish meal is animal protein while soya is plant protein .. They are not totally thesame; thats why we use both fish meal and soya meal together . Soya can reduce the use of fish meal but not totally . Its still good to leave some percentage fish meal in your feed composition... like me , if i tell you in some stage of my feed production i dont use fish meal at all but i balance the animal protein with another cheaper animal protein and i get same result .Some people will raise eye brow and ask if its possible but yes very possible, its just to add what is called an attractant, a topic for another day stay tuned i will give the continuation of my write up 10pm today GOOD LUCK ...

LITTLE EXPO : For best spawning result maintain water between 28 to 30 degree and ph between 7 to 7.5 anything more or less you get low percentage hartch. goodluck

No it will not, get an incubator net, MOSTLY MOSQUITO NET . You can fasten a net to some light pvc pipe to do it .. The eggs will be seating on the net and your water flow rate is very low i mean the pressure of the water entering the vat and going out will be very minimal , so it can not flush the eggs on the hatchery net . just reduce to the lowest minimal..as your fries grow u increase it little by little GODBLESS.

what extruder machine do you recommend can make our feed float after formulating so as to avoid feed wastage and frequent contamination of water?

MY REPLY TO THAT WILL BE TODAY 9pm check www.agricnetwork.com you dont need no extruder machine you can use your normal peletizing machine it is the process i will explain in my write up its called semi floating local fish feed ..it may not float too long like ur regular foreighn feed but it will stay like 10 minutes which i think is enough for catfish to eat it before sinking check agricnetwork 9pm for the answer
