Soft 777, are we not making a mistake in dis stocking density, I you say 5 per meter square, dt means a 3m x 3m will hold only 45 fishes cos ( 3*3*5=45). Then are we saying depth is not a factor in stocking since we are not calculating in volume?

Mr lamude23 thanks for the question, but am very much correct and on point. May be you did not understand my write up . Let me elaborate . A square meter is just the size of those white plastic table used in parties , you cant calculate a quare meter without multiplying depth ; for example a pond of 10 by 15 and depth 4ft , MULTIPLY the length breath and width divde by 3 and you get the total square meter in your pond . Using this standard pond as an example, 10 by 15 by 4 = 600 cubic meter, then divide by 3, you get 200 square meter . So it implies that in this pond size, you will get 200 square meter . So for standard flow through system, using 5 fish , this stocking rate or density amounts to 5 multiply by your total squqre meter 200. This gives 1000 fishes, and it implies that , in a pond of 10 by 15 by 4 ft you can stock 1000 fish to grow out and you can stock higher if your market target is mellange , using standard method . But note , we have different types of system you can operate in your farm ; STANDARD SYSTEM , INTENSIVE SYSTEM and SUPER INTENSIVE SYSTEM. Personally, i operate superintensive system to maximize the full usage of my ponds and i record almost five times profits on a particullar pond. You are on point sir , in europe and advanced countries its a general practice done on other cultured or farmed fish like channel catfish , stripe bass fish etc . For the african catfish, if you are to use this method , this resources is best used with male brood with all the best quality cause the reason of preservation of this male parent brood fish , is to make sure you get the same quality fries like there male parent , since catfish fries carries more of the physical characteristics of the male parent than the female . Meaning the fries resemble mostly the male or takes after the male parent gene , but be very cautious in that when you stich the fish, dont add it to the other brood immediately, or else the other broods in your ponds, with the smell of blood will start to peck on the injury and if care is not taking they get into a big fight there by injuring other broods in the process and eventually stress then death . Also when reusing its milt or spam, is never 100 percent like when you previously use it , am not saying it wont hatch, but am after good percent hatch, so to get good percent hatch , where u normally use 1 male u can get another male and add its milt with the already stiched brood male milt to get maximum hatch . What we are after is more percentage hatch leads to more fries which eventually lead to more profit ...My candid advice as a comercial hatchery, use fresh ones but for little hatcheries the already used and stiched brood is ok GOD BLESS

hmmm 6 weeks post juvenile am not so sure , well to me, standard fingerlings should be 6 weeks and standard juvenile should be minimum 8 week , so continue to feed 2mm till after 8 weeks , u can start to give local feed :To reduce your cost of production. GOOD LUCK

Catfish can strive almost in any type of holding tanks . infact they are one of the best fish that can strive in any type of holding tank. I dont really know how your tank is , but your tank should have an out let where u can flosh out polluted water and inlet to allow fresh water in, if u have that then they can strive there sir.

The major catfish are Clarias gariepinus, Heterobranchus bidorsalis, Heterobranchus hybrid or heteroclaris, etc clarias is the major specie u see in the west , heterobranchus in the south south , the hybrid is the cross between clarias and heterobranchus , hybrid has more tissue, meaning it has more flesh than the other 2, heterobranchus is more testier. clarias can be reared in a higher stocking density than the other 2 , and it is more immune to diseases than the other 2, hybrid and claries has more survival rate than heterobranchus because heterobranchus are more carnivours. All can be reared with great profit if you follow the different procedure of farming them . To me i use clarias for mellange because, i can store them in large quantities in a lesser space with low oxygen, and i use hybrid for my table size grow out because. it grows to a large size faster and has more tissue, means more weight and more profit . But all the species has there advantages and disadvantages , but important is rearing themthe right recommended ways ..I guess this answers your question , if you need more elaboration on any specific specie ,on how to rear it, i will be glad to be of more assistance, thank u and GOOD LUCK

STOCKING . Firstly, to get your fingerlings, make sure that you are awear of the date the fingerlings or juvenile were hatched, to avoid some bad hatcheries selling 3 months old runts to you as fingerlings or selling 4 month old runts as juvenile .A fish farmer first failure or progress is quality of fingerlings, because no matter how u feed runts , they will never grow , buy fro reputable hatcheries no mater the distance for example like the way Mr robonski is taking us through his hatchery processes from day one till now with almost daily update . Any secretive hatchery , please you should have a second taught before buying , also try to see the brood stock used , at lease brood stock should be not less than 1.8 kg for fast growing fingerlings and they should be at minimum a year old . because to me bigger brood stock hartche bigger fries thats law of GENETICS . A good fish at 1 year if not up to 1.8 kg minimum , what type of fingerlings you expect from such fish . Transporting your fingerlings require good technique because when u stock weak and stressed fingerlings u ,may loose 30 to 40 percent of your stock the first 3 days without knowing it , and if u are using earthen ponds , where u cant see the floor of your pounds , many fingerlings die due to stress and settle at the bottom of your pounds. Therefore thinking your fish have been stolen by your staff , but at sorting or sales u discover u have nothing in your ponds .you start to think it was stolen or they canibalise . If not properly managed your lost is two ways , you will lost your fish and lost also money for feed because for example, you think , you stocked 1000 fishes in your pond and feed budget will be 1000 not knowing you are feeding 400 or 500 so u lost more money by buying feed for 1000, while you are actually feeding 500 that is double lost. BASIC facts for transporting you fish . I will use our local way of transporting because there are lots of advanced way of transporting fish but most of these facilities are not readily available in nigeria.. Our loccal way of transporting using a 50 liters dark plastic , sow a sack round your rubber plastic to avoid external heat through the surface of the plastic, the sack helps insulate your plastic and keep water in your plastic cool and temperture constant meaning ,YOU will not have a fast rise or low in ur temperature change , use mostly black colour plastic , cause , dark colour helps retain heat and makes inside the holding tank dark which catfish like better , giving them an environment suitable for them , when transporting short distance like 1 to 2 hours add little anti stress in the water to calm them before adding little palm oil on the surface to retain oxygen .. but for long distance travel 3 HOURS ABOVE . Please do not use red oil, use the oily multivitamin this does 2 things . 1 , it works as an oil on the surface of the transport water to retain oxygen at the same time it slowly sip in to the water and add multivitamins in the water which in turn gives your fish nesessary vitamins needed to help against stress and imune over bacteria that will be building up in this tight enclosure ,it generally help your fish through out the long journey, note palm oil, multivitamin should be added in very little quantity so as not to pollute the water. PREPARATION OF WATER BEFORE TRANSPORT : The transport water must be the same as the water used in rearing the fingerlings to avoid sharp change in water chemistry. Skip feeding a day before to avoid the fingerlings vommiting there food, due to mechanical and environmental change stress . All plastic containing water should be well cleaned using formaline either new or used plastic .
Aerated or oxygenated before adding ur fish , before fish are added aerate the transport water 1 to 2 hours for good qxygen. Saturated water before adding fish and oil ... on arrival to your farm make sure u check the ph and temperature of transport water and your pond water , to make sure the temprature diffrence are not more than plus or minus 2 degree diffrence and ph should not be more than ph 1 plus or minus diffrence . Gently add water from the pound to your transport water for better acclamitization of your fish , for earthen pounds users, i advice u have an holding tank either wooden plastic or concrete put the fingerlings there for 3 days to acclamitise them better with your pound water . treat them with anti stress first day and next day with formaline bath to reduce any bacteria that must have build up during the transport , before sending them to the main pounds to be used . This will help you monitor your fish ,cause if first 3 days they dont die due to trasnport stress then you are good to go and you are sure of the number of fingerlings which effectively determine your amount of feed . Note always ask for 10 percent mortality, for your fingerlings from your hatchery . Please dont start to count or sort imediately they arrive that will subject them to more stress after undergoing transport stress , this process may give u disaster . Sort or count 2 weeks after they are comfortable in there new home , STOCKING DENSITY :: For flow throug u can stock 5 fish per square meter and for stagnant method range of 2 to 4 , it highly depends on how long u change your water and and type of feed , note floating feed pollute water less and locall pollute more ,,, GOD bless

Pls. my fishes are 2 months plus and I use tarpaulin tanks but recently i discovered that almost every other day i will wake up to see one or two fishes dead i have treated twice with oxytetracycline & salt in the last two weeks but the situation seems to persist. Please can anyone advise me on what next to do? should i try formalin? Also, can i use ashes in a tarpaulin tank? Thank you all.

Hmmm ok, your fish need serious treatment since the infection has been long , then your tarpaulin itself is infected , get the fish out completely put them in any comfortable tank with some water add anti stress or any good fish multivitamin to them , they sell them 500 naira per sachet , this will help booste there imune system, drain the water out completely from your infected pond , wash the tapaulin with formalin then rinse it and wash it again with salt water , please no soap , put your fish back ,add very little water that just cover there body add some otc and leave them for 2 to 3 hours then gradually increase there water . remember do not feed a day before you do this treatment., let us know how they are doing GOOD LUCK

CONCRETE POND CONSTRUCTION AND PREPARATION : Concrete pound can be constructed in backyards because of space or farms that have no good clay texture to hold water , to construct a concrete pond get the services of an experience bricklayer who has done a previous job before .I recommend you use a 9 inches block with quantity cement .The pounds should be constructed gradual sloping to allow easy drainage .. Inlet and outlet should be constructed and before plastering the bricklayer should wet the pounds with water just like the way german flouring is done, to make sure the concrete are turgid . Also before plastering a mixture of normal cement ,sharp sand and water proof cement should be done , the mixture should be the same in quantity , as in 1 bag of cement to 1 bag of water proof cement. When u do that your pound will look like the structures julius berger use for doing pavements besides the road .Make sure you tell the bricklayer to sieve the sand again before using for plastering to ensure the plastering work is very smooth to avoid stones or coarse particles because these coarse particles will not make your plastering bind well and if u have any un bind part in your plastering, water can easily sip through and your pound will start to crack and eventually leak . The plastering should be done 2 times . gradual slow drying of the plastering should be allowed by covering the cemented pounds with celopheen or nylon .The nylon should be placed not less than 45 minutes after plastering or else u will have leakage in your pounds in less than 8 month . This will allow it dry slowly and makes the pound stronger, the edges of the pounds should not be sharp ... After construction leave the pound for 10 to 14 days for proper drying then fill the pounds to the top with water add dry grass or any animal manure but i prefare chicken manure , leave it for a week , this will test the strength of your pound and the same time the manure or dry grass will help fertilize the pound .After 1 week drain out the water and use salt water to wash the pound there is no need to use soap ...You can use formaline also . the washing process help you to remove the lime in the cement and neutralises the walls and base of your pounds . For aeration i prefare the pipe constructed some inches above the pounds so as to help aerate at the same time give fresh water as in case of flow through . it can also be used for stagnant method also. If you find clay ,then good for construction of your earthen pounds , but if u do not find clay please do not use such place for fish farm ,cause clay is needed to retain the water in your pound . If you are using an earthen pond make sure u use an earthen pond that has natural water coming out from under the ground or you have a near by stream , well or borehole close to your pond. For thoese whose farm is close to swampy area there is what we call gushing bore hole, this type of bore hole allows water to come out from the ground without you pumping it.The water continuously come out or gush out by itself without using any energy source to pump it , and this will help you reduce your cost of fuel and generator . The depth of your pound should be between a range of 4 to 6 feet .and it should be gradual sloping from one end to the other to allow easy drainage, and a harvest place should be dug inside the pond mostly at the middle of the pond , after this make sure u construct an inlet and outlet or an overflow pipe and drainage pipe, both should be constructed at the deepest end of the fish pond. The drainage and overflow pipe should be well covered with a tiny mesh screen or net to avoid predators entering your pound through their openings .The overflow pipe help maintain the level of water in your pound while, the drainage pipe helps allow unwanted water out of your pound .Firstly, for earthen ponds drain out all existing water out of the ponds completely . Allow it 1 day or 2 to allow atmospheric oxygen to aerate the soil and give it a good soil texture for your pond. This will allow and encourage the soil not to clodge together, at the same time allow a favorable condition for needed microbal growth in your soil . Then add lime to the dry soil in your pond, please for dry soil do not mix your lime with water just pour it dry on your dry soil , but for earthen ponds with water in it , mix your lime with water and pour it by broadcasting it randomly on the water surface of your pond. Please when liming ensure your nose and mouth are well covered because constant breathing of lime dust is not very good for humans. Benefits of liming .1, it helps correct the acidity of an earthen pond 2, it helps kill predators like frogs tapoads, all trash fish or fish from previous harvest , 3, the lime forces out nutrients from the soil and with combination with fertilization , help for the growth of zooplanktons which automatically becomes natural food for the fish . Cover your pound 24 hours after liming this will enable all unwanted predators time to run out of the saturated limed water . You can cover your pounds in 2 ways. Firstly fence it with wire mesh, round your pounds or with used zincs . Secondly, you can get net and cover your pounds from top to avoid bird predators. After 7 days of limeing you then, FERTILIZE :For fertilization you can use any animal or bird manure ORGANICALLY, or you can buy an inorganic fertilizer N.P.K. 15, 15,15 to lime your pound . For this topic i will elaborate on chicken manure .There are different ways of using chicken manure , 1, get a drum pour your dry chicken manure in it and add fill the drum to half amd stir it properly with a wooden stick , this will allow the wood shaven or saw dust in the chicken manure to flow up so u can easily seperate or remove the wood shaven . Secondly proper stiring allows for easy mixture of the manure and water to form an even water solution and it helps the manure dissolve easyly . Pour the mixture in your pound by broadcast method, round the surface of your pound. Another method is to pour you chicken manure in a sack like cement sack or rice sack and tie it close to the shallow part of the pound, as the water flow from the shallow side to the deep side, it carries the nutrients from the sack round the pound for even distribution. Fertilization helps in the boom of zooplanktons which eventualLy becomes live food for your fish . After 4 days of fertilization your pound is now ready for stocking. But before stocking , make sure u check your water ph to be sure its not too alkaline and also to ensure the acidity have been corrected, and if u have a seci disc you can use it to test for microorganism boom in your water GOOD LUCK

A good local feed is one that has all the required nutrients or say balance diet ; a fish require for tissue , or flesh production or growth. A good local feed should be palatable bindwell and float at least 5 min . Overall should be economical not too cost. i have tried to disscuse about some cheaper ingredients to replace some good percentage of the costly ingredients, and still give same result to your fish...Ihope it answers your question , but If u have a specific question on local feed, i will be glad to elaborate GOD BLESS

Kudos to all the professors and helpers here... I cannot name but you know yourselves lol.

I have been following this thread for months, and decided to start small... A close contact of mine is also involved and has run a fish farm before.

We decided to go straight in to hatching.

I rented a farm - several hatching and larger concrete ponds. We bought some brood stocks from badagry.

First time, we hatched 3 females. It went so well. The fries were doing well... Until 3 weeks old. Then we started noticing foaming, and we lost 90% of the fries.

Second time, we hatched 4 females. Again, the product was very high. This time, at 1 week, we moved them out of the hatching ponds into the larger ponds thinking they will be happier with more space. Yesterday morning, at 4 weeks old they all started dropping again.

We change the water daily, and in fact, last weekend we started doing flow through for 5 hours a day. Water ph was good, around 7. Water is pumped from a borehole, held in a big pond for 2 days before entering the fries pond.

We asked around the area, and came across a water "expert" who says we should pour a bag of limestone in the holding pond.

I am really scratching my head here. What could we be doing wrong. Any assistance would be required please.

Even a visit to the farm from any around Ikotun area would be welcomed.

IF your ph is ok and you aerate regularly for oxygen, then your problem will be dissolve ions in your water ..Try to take your water for analysis ..if its dissolve ions then u need to make a filtration chamber with silica sand .Allow your water to pass through it before it get to your hatching vat , to take care of the dissolve ions in your water , and if its not ion , then do what the prof robonski said , change your vat it may be infected or do good cleaning of your vat with formalin before u hartch again GOOD LUCK

yes your friend is correct .. lower the water in ur pond, if possible dry the pond .. leave it for 2 days to allow the air to aerate the soil properly . then add ur lime in the pond . the lime does 2 things it helps neutralise your water give it a good ph suitable for your fish at the same time since u have , little or no water in your pond , the lime is well concentrated or saturated .this state kills all unwanted left over fish , frogs, liches and insects in the pond. After 7 days fertalise with dry chicken waste for 3 days, this helps send nutrients to your water and give a good breeding ground for zooplanktons and phytoplanktons . There is nothing like maggot ..maggot dont live in ponds so your friend is wrong there .. These micro organisms are suplimentary live feed for fish .My brother if what u want is maggot for feeding fish you can ask and i will tell you how to make maggot at the back of your farm without offensive smell to feed your fish ...... I intend to use normal drugs... same as people use... not growth hormones.

For one to do any form of agriculture without manure/fertilizer/growth boost, to me, is stupidity...

the drugs additive will be small.... and will b applied at intervals... say I could give them drug mixed feed on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday for two weeks... not that I'll be feeding them drugs everyday... they will all die from exhaustion nau.

if I get concrete results after first 2 weeks, then I'll continue the routine till they reach 2 months.... by then, I'll have to stop giving them drugs cos their appetite will be so much.... I don't think I'll be able to match their food demands.

so from 3-4 months, I won't put drugs in their feeds again except I'm looking for trouble...

by the fourth month, all the drugs would have been out of their body

My brother the truth is , everybody wants fast growth you cant just use all human drugs for fish , we are mammals and fish are not our general anatomy is never thesame so pls dont use human drugs lol follow the general practices laid down on this thread by the fish gurus here and u profit GOD BLESS

I hope to start my farm in January... in wooden 18 * 9 feet framework supported on d under & sides with either old/new roofing sheets, PVC ceiling or plank sheets (d type used to demarcate large halls.... then finally cover it with tapauline.... get a plumber to install in, out &recirculatory pipes (d ponds will b long o.... not square)... then pump in water. I hope to spend 25-30k to build a ponds that way.....

I hope to start with 4000 fingerlings... 2000 fingerlings per pond.... after a month, I know I'll have to build another pond.... till then... make man start first.

before I start anything sha... I'll go to large pharmacy shops to look for growth stimulating drugs/mineral/vitamin/hunger stimulating drugs I can grind to powder, add to liquid catfish "growth" tonic, mix with floating feed , sun dry and give dem fingerlings chop for about a week , sort the bigger one, continue feed-drugging the bigger ones periodically till I run out of drugs or at 2nd month.....

the runts nko? na bakery waste den go dey chop till about 3moths and den sell off and use d funds realized to buy feeds for the bigger ones

if I can get 2500 fishes to 1kg in 4 months by drug-feeding (I'll stop drugging in 2nd month), no wahala

Too much growth stimulant if not added properly u meet your fish dead the following day ..apart from that too much growth enhance drugs are toxtic to people who will consume it...plesas slow and staedy wins the race dont over drug your fish
