Jos – There was an explosion Sunday night in Tudun Wada area of Jos, injuring a seven year old girl and others. But no life was lost.

It was learnt that the blast occurred at about 8pm near a shop and was believed to have been planted near a motorcycle parked close to the shop.

A 505 Station wagon car was destroyed by the explosion alongside the motorcycle.

Media Officer of the Special Task Force, Capt. Mdahyelya Markus confirmed the incident. He said the girl sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

NEMA spokesman, Yishau Shuaib also confirmed the blast.

Police spokesman in the Plateau capital, ASP Samuel Dabai, who confirmed the incident, said that a suspect, riding on a motorcycle threw the explosive device and escaped.

He said the injured had been taken to the Plateau Specislist Hospital. Dabai said no arrest had been made, adding that investigation had gone underway to identify those behind the incident.

The Govenor’s Lodge and office, the police command’s headquarters and the seat of the military Special Task Force deployed to maintain law and order in the state are situated in the area under attack.

Only last Thursday, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Emmanuel Ayeni, announced a ban on the operations of motorcycles in the state from 7 p.m. on that day to 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

Making the announcement at a parley with representatives of security agencies and leaders of religious groups, Ayeni said the measure was part of efforts to ensure hitch-free Easter celebrations.

Sunday’s explosion paralysed social and night life in the Plateau capital as revellers scampered to safety. Most drink joints were instantly put under lock by their operators. (NAN)

Politics / Governor T.A. Orji Wades Into Oteh, House C’ttee On Capital Market Face Off by solaugo(m): 1:44pm On Mar 19, 2012
Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, yesterday waded into the face-off between the Director General (DG) of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms. Aruma Oteh, and the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market.

This however came on a day the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) expressed regret at the conduct of the public hearing on the operations of the country’s Stock Market by the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market.

But Orji in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Ugochukwu Emezue, called on both parties to embrace peace as he insisted that their differences can be reconciled.

The governor said having watched with studied silence the development which seemed to have created some verbal exchange between the committee and the Director-General who is an Abian that it was time to intervene.

He argued that if the Director General of SEC had made any offensive statement during the unfolding melodrama, it was as a result of the way the Commitee Chairman handled the issues at stake. “For the Governor, the idea of passing a judgement on the DG, saying that she is incompetent and the serious attack on her proven integrity by the chairman of the committee, is quite uncalled for.”

The governor insisted that only a court of competent jurisdiction has the constitutional power to pass judgement on any individual.

Meanwhile, CPC in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said by allowing the proceedings to degenerated into vengeful attacks rather than the core issues of how to restore our capital market to a prosperous state, the committee has exhibited gross incompetence.

“CPC has noted, with unmistakable uneasiness, the avoidable spat between the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, Ms. Aruma Oteh and Hon. Herman Herbe, the Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Capital Market at the last sitting of the probe panel on Thursday, 15th March, 2011. That the discourse degenerated to the petulant and mundane dimension was clearly attributable to the immaturity of the House Committee leadership,” he said.

Fashakin said what was in the bigger public interest to the Nigerian people was derailed “when the committee probe concentrated energy on purely administrative matters of SEC which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was more structurally and legally empowered to handle“.

He said close watchers of the capital market would attest to the strident moves in the reformatory agenda being unveiled in the last one year.

According to him, reforms led to the unceremonious exit of the erstwhile Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

“The issue of transparency in the Capital market has received fresh impetus with the suspension of Dangote Plc; a clear message that it cannot be business as usual! Truly, trading at the stock market started on a steady increase since the beginning of March, 2012 and inched to a marginal increase of 0.64 per cent prior to the commencement of the probe. But the odious nature of the probe had reversed this trend with the all-share index plummeting at the Nigerian Stock Exchange,” he said.

Recalling the incident at last week’s Public Hearing, Fashakin, said Oteh made earth-rending allegations of corruption and personal integrity deficit against the House Committee Chairman and the Committee.

She alleged that among these allegations were that the Chairman of the Committee October, Hon. Herman Herbe, had in October 2010 collected a business class ticket (plus estacode) to attend a course in the Dominican Republic, but failed to attend and did not return the money collected.

Also the Director General had alleged that the House Committee demanded N39million from SEC to facilitate its probe efforts, in addition to a personal cash demand of N5 million made by the Chairman.

Fashakin said the allegations made by the Director-General were so grave that it clearly underscored the need to make the elected Public officers accountable to the people.

“These allegations pointedly bring to the fore the noxious corruption associated with the business of the National Assembly. It is no longer a hidden fact that sponsored Bills to the National Assembly by Ministries, Departments and Agencies to enable them operate unobtrusively must be backed up by unbudgeted cash payments to receive the needed support,” he said.

Politics / Why Egba Chief Committed Suicide by solaugo(m): 6:42am On Mar 19, 2012
Facts are begining to emerge regarding the alleged suicide of an Egba High Chief and close associate of former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Apagun Oluwole Olumide. He was said to have committed suicide on Friday night as some relatives that spoke to LEADERSHIP were of the view that his death might not be ordinary.

A source close to the family who spoke on conditions of anonymity said Olumide might have committed suicide in view of the trouble facing him from different angles.

He said the late high Chief was one of the beneficiaries of the alleged corrupt actions of the former Governor Gbenga Daniel which prompted his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,.

“He was detained by the Commission and was just released on that Friday evening when he came back to Abeokuta to commit suicide” the source said.

An unconfirmed report has it that he was highly cooperative during his brief detention as EFCC prepared to slam fresh fraud charges against the former governor. Chief Apagun Olumide, it was learnt, would have been a key witness for the EFCC on the financial fraud involving the former Governor.

Our source also revealed that another factor might be his recent travails with Ogun State Government

The late Apagun had been at the receiving end of land and property seizure by the Amosun administration.

Politics / British Divorcee Loses £40,000 To Nigerian Fraudster by solaugo(m): 6:53am On Feb 16, 2012
A divorcee was tricked into sending £40,000 to a Nigerian fraudster she met over the internet.

Vicky Fowkes, 59, decided to start dating online in early summer 2010 and by August she was sending money through ‘moneygrams’ to a man in Nigeria she believed was a charming Briton called John Hawkins.

By November 2010 the man, who claimed he was an engineer with his own property business, had received nearly £40,000.

But Fowkes’ hope of love was shattered when the police visited her home in Tewkesbury, Worcestershire, and revealed the romance was a scam concocted by an internet fraudster.

The mother-of-two said, “I put my trust in this person and I was beginning to start a relationship with him, but now the whole affair has had a devastating effect on my life. I have been humiliated and have lost my self-respect.”

Fowkes, a self-employed child care consultant, began sending money to Nigeria in August 2010 after her internet lover failed to visit her at Heathrow after telling her he had booked a flight.

She told Telegraph.co.uk, “He was due to come for a visit in August but he wasn’t on the flight and then when he rang later that day he said they stopped him at customs to do with tax issues with his business. Two weeks later he started asking me for money.”

The man masquerading as John Hawkins claimed he was being fined by the government for the tax that he owed.

But West Mercia Police visited Fowkes and broke the news that she was the victim of a fraudster.

Robin Longmore, a financial intelligence development officer for West Mercia Police said, “Through our investigations we started to believe Vicky was a victim. This kind of thing is a massive problem in Nigeria and Ghana with groups of men sitting in internet cafes all conning people over their internet dating sites.

“We believe that this person was operating from Nigeria and John Hawkins is clearly a made up name and the pictures that he used are obviously taken from the internet and are innocent members of the public.”

Politics / Christians, Muslims Besiege Jaiz Bank For Islamic Banking Transactions by solaugo(m): 6:34am On Feb 16, 2012
Weeks after it flung open its doors to customers, Nigerians from all walks of life, including Christians and Muslims have started business transactions with Jaiz International Bank Plc which is the first bank that commenced non-interest commercial banking in the country.
When Peoples Daily visited the banking hall of Jaiz at the Central Business District in Abuja yesterday, customers of diverse background were seen making enquiries about various types of accounts and products operated by the bank.
Our correspondent, who accosted an Igbo business man who said he was in the bank’s branch to open a joint account. Although, he refused to disclose his identity, he said he believes in the concept of profit and risk sharing promoted by non-interest banking.
An officer on the customer relations desk said that the response has been tremendous. She said both Muslims, Christians keep coming to open accounts and make enquiries. However, she wouldn’t want to be quoted, for what she says is because of the bank’s management policy.
An inside source informed Peoples Daily yesterday that a team of inspectors from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is expected at the bank soon for what he said was a follow-up on an initial inspection.
He also disclosed that the services rendered by the bank for now are skeletal, but said the final inspection by CBN, which is being expected any moment from now will define the shape of things to come.
It was also learnt yesterday, that the bank is not yet at the CBN’s clearing house but however, clears its instruments through First Bank as some other banks are doing. When contacted for comment yesterday, the bank’s AGM Corporate Services, Abdu Sa’id declined comment.
Although officials were not willing to disclose on record how many customers have opened accounts with the bank so far, one said “we have registered many customers”.
It would be recalled that Jaiz Bank Plc finally kicked-off operations last week of January 2012, opening operations simultaneously at its headquarters in Abuja and in Kaduna and Kano after over five years of going public to raise fund for capitalisation.
Chairman of the bank, Alhaji Umar Mutallab speaking at the bank’s inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) last August said: “The whole idea of this banking option is to bring more people into banking in Nigeria that provides banking without interest.
