Culture / Prince Lukman Gbadegesin : One Of Prince Aspiring To The Throne Of The Alaafin by soldierkunle: 12:52pm On Sep 14, 2022
One of the princes aspiring to the exalted throne of the Alaafin of Oyo, Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, appeared before the Oyomesi on Tuesday for his screening at the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo.

The photographs obtained by OYOINSIGHT.COM showed how the prince was warmly received by the people.

Gbadegesin was a federal public servant in the Obasanjo era.

Excited to see these photographs capturing the warmth our people extended His Highness The Prince Lukman Adelodun Ayinla Gbadegesin as he arrived at the Palace of Oyo yesterday to face the Oyo Mesi screening panel.

Not surprised. The Prince has always been a cool man of the people. Highly networked and high up there in social worth, yet humble and close to the roots.

His appearance his profoundly royal. The stately natural figure. The panache. The sophisticated, elegant manners. But his mind is even more profound. You'd be left wowed when you listen to him journey into our (Oyo) history or recall past events with military precision. As much as he's conservative, he still very much represents progressivism; he'd ideate how cultural values and events in our past can guide new development and community initiatives.

One day, for example, at an Abuja policy event graced by foreign diplomats and our country's security planners, he's describing how the full structure of the Alaafinate can be explored to build a multi-layered/stakeholder community security system that picks intelligence, detects and reports threats, and mobilises preventive actions.

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/12/innoson-efcc-arrest-gtb-loan-facts-behind-saga/
Recently, the Innoson/GTBank story has gained so much media prominence, especially following the arrest of the Innoson chairman a few days ago by EFCC. Though the case is pending in court, Innoson has taken the battle to social media.
What we discovered:
GTBank (in 2009) granted Innoson several credit facilities (i.e loans) totalling N2,400,000,000,00 (two billion, four hundred million Naira only), to part finance working capital requirements, import new motorcycles and motorcycle spare parts, agricultural spare parts and plastic manufacturing equipment (“Imported Goods”).
Under the loan terms agreed by Dr. Innocent Chukwuma on behalf of Innoson, proprietary interest in the Imported Goods was consigned exclusively in favour of the Bank. This means that the Bank was the exclusive owner of the Imported Goods. Accordingly, the original shipping documents (i.e. the Bills of Lading) were in the custody of the Bank, and have remained in the custody of the Bank at all times.
Because GTBank was the exclusive owner of the imported goods, ownership of the goods could only be transferred to Innoson (or any other third party) by the Bank. The condition in the agreement between the Bank and Innoson, for the release of the Imported Goods by the Bank to Innoson, was the payment of 25% of the value of each Letter of Credit transaction by Innoson.
Innocent Chukwuma approached the Bank, on behalf of Innoson, requesting the release of the shipping documents without payment of the agreed+ 25% equity. The Bank declined his request as a result of Innoson’s failure to meet the agreed conditions.
It came to the Bank's knowledge sometime in June, 2011 that the Imported Goods for which the Bank declined to release shipping documents to Innoson in view of its failure to meet the agreed conditions, had been fraudulently procured by Innoson.
The Bank discovered that Innoson, under the control of Dr. Innocent Chukwuma had forged the Bank’s endorsement on the bills of lading to the Shipping Line and fraudulently cleared the Imported Goods which were in the name of the Bank. The Imported Goods, being property of the Bank should not have been cleared from the Port without the original shipping documents being endorsed by the Bank in favour of Innoson, or any third party.
The signatures of 4 (four) staff of the Bank, to wit, Taofeek Olalere, Dan Attah, Bunmi Adeyemi and Amazu Amalachukwu, as well as the Bank’s stamp were forged on all the shipping documents used by Innoson to fraudulently clear goods at the port. The Bank did not at any time endorse or transfer the shipping documents to Innoson, as the originals of each of the relevant Bill of Lading remain in the Bank's custody to this very day.
When the Bank reported the matter to the Nigeria Police, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma claimed the Bank released the shipping documents to him. Consequently, the Police commenced investigation into the Bank’s complaint, including a forensic examination of the disputed signatures, and established that the signatures of the Bank’s staff were forged, and the Imported Goods were fraudulently cleared from the Nigerian Ports Authority by Dr. Innocent Chukwuma and his accomplices.
Police investigations confirmed that Innoson and Dr. Innocent Chukwuma deliberately set out to defraud, steal from the Bank and convert the Imported Goods belonging to the Bank by deceptive means and through forgery and misrepresentation. The unlawful takeover of the Imported Goods, which served as the Bank’s collateral, left an indebtedness in excess of the sum of N1,654,481,895.04 (one billion, six hundred and fifty four million, four hundred and eighty one thousand, eight hundred and ninety five Naira, four Kobo) as at September 26, 2012.
Chief Innocent Chukwuma was arrested and interrogated by operatives of the EFCC, following which he agreed to make monthly payments into Innoson’s account until the full liquidation of Innoson’s indebtedness to the Bank. However, Innoson defaulted in making the agreed payments. Investigations by the Nigeria Police following a petition by the Bank in September 2013 also found Innoson and Chief Innocent Chukwuma culpable of the criminal allegations levied against them by the Bank, and Chief Innocent Chukwuma was accordingly charged to court by the Police.
The Police filed Charge No. FHC/L/565C/2015-Inspector General Of Police And Innoson Nigeria Limited; Innocent Chukwuma;Charles Chukwuma;Maximian Chukwura; Mitsui Osk Lines; Annajekwu Sunny for fraudulent clearance of goods, forgery, conversion, stealing and conspiracy presently pending before Faji J, at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi and adjourned to November 21, 2017 for arraignment/or hearing of motion for issuance of Bench Warrant.
Innoson approached the Bank for a reconciliation of his account and pleaded for a debt forgiveness. A reconciliation was carried out on the account - which had a debit balance of N1,654,481,895.04 as at December 31, 2011. In the spirit of amicable resolution and EFCC intervention, the Bank said it agreed to forego the sum of N559,374,072.09 which represented default charges that has accrued on the account and debited in line with the loan agreement between the customer and the Bank
Based on this, the Bank decided to accept from the customer, the sum of N1,095,107,822.95 as full and final payment of the customer’s indebtedness to the Bank, provided that same shall be fully paid not later than (30) days from the date of the letter written to him
Surprisingly, Innoson commenced suit no:FHC/AWK/CS/2012 against the Bank at the Federal High Court, Awka stating the bank had debited its account with excess charges totalling N559,374,072.09 and obtained judgement in excess of N4.7Billion against the Bank. Again choosing to dishonour an agreement that was amicable reached between him and the Bank for a full and final settlement of N1,095,107,822.95 wherein the Bank graciously forgave him the sum of N559,374,072.09 which accrued on his account during the period which he abandoned his account.
To further stall the criminal proceedings against him, Chief Innocent Chukwuma and his company instituted suits at the Federal High Court, Abuja, as well as the Federal High Court, Awka in January 2014 against The Inspector General of Police,
The Nigeria Police Force and Investigating Officer(s), seeking declaratory and injunctive reliefs, including orders restraining the Police from commencing criminal proceedings against Innoson and Chief Innocent Chukwuma. Furthermore, in a bid to stall the Bank’s recovery steps, and distract the Bank from focusing on the criminal action, as well as civil actions filed for recovery of the debt, Chief Innocent Chukwuma and his company Innoson, have continued to institute various spurious suits before various courts, claiming frivolous and outrageous sums against the Bank.
What GTBank is not saying:
In responding to Innoson’s motion for a stay of criminal proceedings at the Court of Appeal, the Honourable Justice J.S Ikyegh on September 17,2017 dismissed the motion for being unmeritorious and ordered that proceeding in the criminal case against Innson should proceed.
On October 12, 2017, the Police through its Charge No. FHC/L/565C/2015- filed an application for the issuance of bench warrant against Innocent Chukwuma; Charles Chukwuma and Annajekwu Sunny for fraudulent clearance of goods, forgery, conversion, stealing and conspiracy presently pending before Faji J, at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi and adjourned to Decemeber 8, 2017 for arraignment/or hearing of motion.
Politics / Managed To Convince Nigerians Using “A Three-dimensional Frame” – Reuben Abati by soldierkunle: 7:17pm On Aug 15, 2017
I was really excited on Saturday when I received news of the eventual visit of President Muhammadu Buhari’s media team to him in London. I had always felt that the exclusion of the media team from the London medical vacation and the various visits practically undermined the Presidential media office, and created the space for the mismanagement of the communication process around and about the President’s illness.
I could never have imagined my own boss in our time, travelling without me or shutting me out of any important event. He took my team everywhere. Every President has what is called a Main Body. This comprises his first line of assistants, namely his Chief Security Officer, Aidede-Camp, Chief Detail, Chief Physician, State Chief of Protocol, Personal Assistant (Luggage), Personal Assistant (Private matters), and of course, the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity)Official Spokesperson.
Whereas other parts of this body face their own challenges, the major problem that the President’s media team often faces is that everyone in the Presidency, and even persons from outside, particularly the na-my-brother-dey-there crowd tend to assume that they know a lot about the media. They probably have an uncle who once worked as a journalist or newspaper vendor, or they happen to know one or two editors or correspondents, who are perpetually telling them how the media team is not doing what it is supposed to do.
While other parts of the President’s Main Body are usually civil servants, the Chief Physician and the Special Adviser (Media) are traditionally political appointees, and they are easily the targets of so many people who want their positions. My then colleague, the Chief Physician used to complain bitterly about how on many occasions he had to warn self-appointed physicians who used to recommend vitamins and other drugs for the President behind his back. In the corridors of power, the jostling for power, territory, and space could be psychologically crippling and emotionally corrosive.
I recall in particular, how in those days, (indeed, yesterday is beginning to sound like those days!), some persons used to draw attention to how the media is managed in the US White House. After while, I started asking them: “have you ever worked in this White House, that you talk so eloquently about?” Now, we have seen a different White House under President Donald Trump, and hence, when I call up “the White House experts”, their only response these days is that “it is not easy.” Of course, no part of Presidential work is easy.
There is also no standard formula for serving a President. No two presidencies are alike in any way. The nature and character of an executive Presidency is determined by the style/temperament/competence/choices of the individual President and the circumstances of his tenure, and it is these same factors that account for the differences between great, mediocre and bad Presidents. To each category, history is the eventual judge.
Nonetheless, I thought it was wrong to have kept President Buhari’s team out of the London trips. The core team should have been there all the time to take photographs, issue statements, if needed, organize video recordings, liaise with local journalists, and manage “inconvenient” journalism and public perception. But what did w have? The various pictures taken of the Presiden until the visit by his media team, looked like photos taken by quacks. The President was presented as if he was a statue, or at best, as a sick man propped up for photographic effect. Nobody even paid attention to his wardrobe.
I imagined that some characters would have fille the gap left by the absence of the media team, and would have been busy taking pictures with a miserable gadget, not knowing that photos are meant to tell stories and that they are taken with the brain. Whoever was behind that newspaper vendor style of journalism did the President a disservice and was responsible for most of the damage that was done. The real damage was that Nigerians did not believe the official narrative, they concluded that the pictures were photo-shopped or that they were old pictures and that there was an attempt to hoodwink the public. It didn’t help that whoever took those early pictures focused on the President’s weak points: his fingers and arms in a poor pose, for example.
But the game changed the day Bayo Omoboriow accompanied seven governors to London to see the President. With five pictures, the President’s official photographer showed him in better light. The photographs presented him as a living being Every Presidential assistant is as important as th amount of access and empowerment that he/sh enjoys. Many Presidents undermine their media team, as US President Trump has done. I consider the visit to London by President Buhari’ media team, a form of rehabilitation, for the team and for the office. The meaning of that visit was not lost on the team either.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on his arrival at the Abuja House, looked like he had been grinning about 100 metres away before he met the President. When the President extended his hands for a handshake, Alhaji Lai Mohammed did a Nigerian version of the Cameroonian Bidoung challenge. He bowed close to 90 degrees. Even when the President took another person’s hand, Lai Mohammed was still busy bowing. When the President praised him, he grinned so much, I thought he was going to prostrate! My brothers, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu didn’t bow, they stayed professional, but I have never seen both former Presidents of the Nigerian Guild of Editors grin so enthusiastically!
Lauretta Onochie was probably the biggest beneficiary of the visit. Considered by opposition activists a footnote in the Presidency pretending to be a valuable attack dog, her inclusion in that trip has elevated her relevance. She still has a lot to learn on the job though, especially from the masters of the attack dog game in Nigerian politics: the inimitable and talented Femi Fani-Kayode, the grandmaster of this chivalric Order, Doyin Okupe, the senior warden of rebuttals, Lai Mohammed, Ayodele Fayose, Reno Omokri, Lere Olayinka, Deji Adeyanju, and Jude Ndukwe. Given the nature of Nigerian politics, future Nigerian presidents will certainly need the services of these dogged political fighters to complement th officialdom of Presidential spokesmanship.
Lauretta Onochie has a lot to learn from them, albeit she is doing much better than the pathetic play-safe crowd in the Buhari team but the London recognition should further empower her. Abike Dabiri-Erewa was also in London, curtseyin with both legs and hands; she was described in the reports as Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, but I guess she was included i the team in her professional right as a seasoned broadcast journalist. Bayo Omoboriowo, the official photographer, was also in attendance and when it was his turn to have a Presidential handshake, he grinned and shook so much he almost staged an Olamide-inspired Wo-challenge I hope he remembered to inform the President that his wife had just been delivered of twins and that being a father of twins has serious implications in Yorubaland!
Together, the team delivered a professional reportage. Brilliant. Different. Good moment for the Presidency’s Media Department. Whereas previous coverage before the Governors’ visit showed the President in an unconvincing manne his media team has managed to show him in a three-dimensional frame. We saw him sitting, standing, and walking. He shook hands. He talked. His wardrobe was different. He appeared animated and alive. With that visit, many doubts have been laid to rest through the power of media. We now know that Buhari can talk. Dirty-minded persons may even stretch the matter and imagine that our President has been engaging in “the other room” skelewu in London. The media team has also managed to establish that medication or not, Buhari remains in charge. He is still President and he is not incapacitated.
In the kind of system that we run, there cannot be two Presidents at a time. When you have a living and breathing President, be he in Iceland o Antarctica, for whatever reason, he remains the President. This, thus, creates a special problem for Acting President Yemi Osinbajo. The combined interpretation of the to-ing and froing t London to visit President Buhari is the impressio that whereas Acting President Osinbajo has an office, transmitted to him constitutionally in the light of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, he has neither the power nor the authority of that office, or he is not being allowed to enjoy the full benefits of his legal status. This puts Nigeria in a lurch, technically and pragmatically and let no on make any bones about that.
What is worse is the declaration by the media team that the President’s return now lies in the hands of his doctors and he is resolved to obey their orders. It is tragic that Nigeria’s sovereignty, which resides in part in the office of the President, has been ceded to UK doctors. They alone can determine when Nigeria can have its President back in the homeland. Saddening as that situation is, not even the Queen of England or the British Prime Minister has deemed it necessary to visit President Buhari or seek audience with him.
This egregious insult is well-deserved by Nigeria and other African countries whose leaders embark on medical tourism to Europe, Asia and North America. The intelligence agencies in thes countries have all the strategic information on ou leaders and country, but we are happy to play third fiddle in global politics. In 2050, Nigeria’s population is likely to be over 300 million, with some of the youngest people in the world being Nigerians. If by 2050, we do not have enough good hospitals and medical facilities to take care of our people, we would be a doomed nation.
This is not a task for Buhari’s media team. But just as they tried to put out a fire in London, another had already started at home. By the way, a Presidential media department is a Fire Service office and an ambulance operation. There is always another fire next time and victims in need of desperate rescue. In the present instance, a group called “Our-mumu-don-do” group, led by Charly Boy, the self-acclaimed Area Fada of Frustrated Nigerians had begun a protest in Abuj asking President Buhari to resume office or resign.
They were echoing the protests of those who have argued that the Nigerian electorate voted fo a President not an absentee one, that they voted in the expectation that their President would stay in office and serve them, and did not expect that the President would become an apparition or a London-based tourist and museum attraction. Charly Boy, 66, went out with his pro-democracy troops, but they were tear-gassed and harassed by the police. They were accused of engaging in unlawful pro-corruption and irresponsible activity that was hijacked by hoodlums. That of course is stupid talk.
At issue was the right of every Nigerian to protes without being molested, and the right to free speech. When free speech is denied, hate speec is encouraged. It is ironic that the same government that is so concerned about hate speech is the same one promoting it.
Meanwhile, sycophantic speech is encouraged. To counter the Charly Boy group, someone organized a pro-Buhari group, which has been busy dancing around Abuja proclaiming that Buhari will win the 2019 election, denouncing those who want him to resign. I have taken a loo at this group and they look like a bunch of hoodlums, every one of them, but they have so fa enjoyed police protection and the government is very happy with them. When government gains one thing with one hand, some other characters remove it with another hand. This is the sign of the times.
But there are unresolved questions that will not go away just like that. For how long will the President remain on medical vacation in London, even when the Constitution, the country’s basic law, is silent and ambiguous on this score? What is the actual cost of the President’s absence in a context that disallows the transfer of power and authority in the presence of an apparently living and said-to-be-capable President who is otherwise indisposed?
I’ll not ask that the visits to London be stopped, in case that is part of the doctors’ therapy, but it is ridiculous and insensitive that government officials are now visiting the President in medical exile, with some of them posing for photo-ops with their children. Our President should not be turned into a tourist attraction and the Abuja House in London should not become a museum.

Politics / Anti-corruption Panel Faults Presidency, Judiciary by soldierkunle: 9:12am On Jun 18, 2017
Two prominent members of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption in Abuja on Saturday picked holes in government’s handling of the anti-corruption war.
Speaking in Abuja at a programme organised by the National Association of Seadogs (the Pyrates Confraternity), the Chairman of the panel, Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), and member, Professor Femi Odekunle, attributed recent setbacks suffered by the administration in the prosecution of corruption cases to the fraudulent activities of compromised elements in the judiciary and legislature, and a lack of diligence on the part of some senior government officials.
The Chairman of the committee, Prof. Itse Sagay, said the President and his team must come up with new ideas to fight corruption.
He said the judiciary was concentrating more on technicalities rather than the spirit of the law and justice.
Sagay said, “The Federal Government, particularly the President and Vice-President, who were elected into office principally to eliminate corruption, must go back to their drawing board, search and scan the constitution and other laws to draw the requisite irresistible power to deal firmly with this terrible scourge of our times – otherwise we are all dead.”
The senior advocate said the National Judicial Council was not equipped to look into corruption cases against judges. He said the primary duty of the NJC was to address judicial misdemeanour.
The PACAC chairman said before 1999, Nigeria had many incorruptible judges like Justice Kayode Eso, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, Justice Mohammed Bello, Justice Chike Idigbe, Justice Adetunji Adefarasin, Justice Mason Begho and others
Sagay, however, said corruption pervaded the judicial system after the return to democracy in 1999, when judges started hearing election petition cases.
He noted that many senior advocates had corrupted and compromised judges to the extent that some of the advocates now pay the school fees of children of judges.
Sagay added, “Today, some judges actually solicit for money. They don’t even wait to be offered money. One of the judges that has been asked by the NJC to go back to work is a constant solicitor of money. He writes to counsel, ‘my mother died yesterday, I need money to bury her.’
“Two months later, ‘my daughter is getting married next month, I need money to organise a wedding: Another month, the same judge will write, ‘my uncle has just been made a chief and I need to make a contribution, send money.’
“This is written to lawyers and the lawyers gladly contribute. In fact, there is a long list of lawyers now who have to go to the EFCC at least once a month to explain why they had to send so much money to the account of one judge or the other who demanded money.
“Some lawyers do it out of a sense of obligation while some lawyers do it for consideration of future favours. It just shows you how (low) our judges have sunk.”
Sagay said his committee had drafted a bill for the ‘Forfeiture of Assets and Properties, procured by unlawful activity (proceeds of crimes)’ which will empower courts to order forfeiture of properties by a person without the person being convicted.
The senior advocate said he had advised anti-graft agencies to use non-conviction based assets recovery system to fight graft in some peculiar cases.
He said in such a situation, anybody who was found in possession of huge sums of money, whose source he or she could not explain, would be made to explain themselves in court.
Sagay said this approach was used by the EFCC in the case against Patience, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, whose $15m has been forfeited to the Federal Government and is now battling to save the $5m found in her bank account.
The PACAC chairman added, “If you are seen to be living beyond your means of livelihood, the anti-graft agencies could apply for temporary forfeiture of funds and properties and you would then be made to appear in court to explain yourself.
“That bill is already before the National Assembly but we are not even waiting for it to be passed. A part of the EFCC Act empowers the agency to do this and it is already being done in the case of Patience Jonathan’s $15m.
“You will recall recently that when $5m which she owns was frozen in her account but was later unfrozen due to technical issues, the EFCC went back to court to apply through this non-conviction based forfeiture and got it frozen again. Now she has to come to court to explain how she got it.”
Also speaking, Odekunle, in particular, questioned the commitment of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to the anti-graft war and also raised a doubt about the integrity of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Mr. Danladi Umar, who discharged and acquitted Senate President Bukola Saraki of all 18 charges levelled against him, on Wednesday.
The professor of criminology also questioned the resolve of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to help the Federal Government in the fight against corruption.
The event titled, ‘Feast of Barracuda’, had ‘Critical Review of the Anti-Corruption War in Nigeria: Strategies, Challenges and Prospects’, as its theme.
While exploring the theme, Odekunle, raised eight salient questions which he said members of the public must answer in order to put the recent failures of the anti-graft war in proper perspective.
He asked, “Does the Presidency realise that routine crime prevention and methodology, instruments and processes are not adequate in fighting corruption in this country? That is, does the Presidency realise that fighting corruption must be a ‘rofo rofo’ fight? That it is not a question of due process, long process, fair hearing and all those that will give you technical justice instead of real justice?
“It is said that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. In this regard, I ask, what were the details and the resolution of the EFCC matter on Danladi Umar’s bribery case? I don’t know, I’m just asking. Does the DSS possess any information about Danladi Umar on the use or abuse of hard drugs?
“Is there any record that Danladi Umar had been driving and crashing his car under the influence? These are questions that I don’t know the answers to but I want you to investigate.
“Is the Attorney-General of the Federation, who is to lead the anti-corruption fight, going by the way things have been going in the past two years, as committed as others who could have done the job better?
“I have no answers but I believe if they are answered, it will give us an insight into the cause of our current dilemma in the fight against corruption.”
Odekunle urged the Federal Government to use unconventional methods in the fight against corruption, saying it would never win if it continued to use what he described as conventional methods.
He said since the corrupt elite controlled the judiciary and the legislature, this group of people would continue to protect its own.
Odekunle added, “So, all this arrangee between the judiciary, the legislators, and people are saying, ‘We don’t want the APC to be destroyed, Saraki is our own, let us settle our own, party supremacy is better’, we must moderate that.” https://www.today.ng/news/nigeria/305425/anti-corruption-panel-faults-presidency-judiciary
Politics / Our Leaders Have Been Hijacking Relief Materials –bakassi Returnees by soldierkunle: 5:21am On Jun 10, 2017
Some returnees from the ceded Bakassi Peninsular have lamented that their leaders had been hijacking relief materials meant for them . The returnees , who are resident at the Bakassi Resettlement Camp at Ekpri - Ikang in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State , alleged that there are no other camps for the Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons apart from theirs.
But their claims ran contrary as there are also over 3 , 000 Bakassi returnees who are camped at Akwa - Ikot - Edem Primary School and Government Secondary School in Akwa -Ikot - Eyo - Edem in Akpabuyo LGA of the state.
On June 3 , a former Presidential Adviser , Senator Florence Ita - Giwa , led a team of security agents to recover multi million naira relief materials in a private resident in Calabar .
The relief materials , which included several bundles of zinc , bags of cement, assorted woods, among others were given by the National Commission for Refugees to the returnees in response to a fire outbreak in Day Spring Island which destroyed makeshift houses .
In a twist , however , the Village Head of Ine-Utan- Akpa - Edok community , Chief Ernest Asuquo , alleged that there was no fire outbreak in Day Spring Island .
He said that as a village head , he never heard of any fire disaster that destroyed houses in his domain.
Asuquo said , “ I learnt that there was fire disaster at Day Spring Island and Ata - Ema which destroyed houses , but I can tell you that it never happened . As the village head , I am not aware of it. ”
Also , the Secretary of the Ekpri - Ikang Refugee Camp which has 300 housing units built by the Federal Government, Mr. Linus Essien, said relief materials meant for the returnees had constantly been hijacked by their leaders .
“ Recently , we got a call that the National Commission for Refugees would be sending relief materials through the State Emergency Management Agency but we did not get anything. Our leaders have been hijacking the relief materials meant for us, ” he said .
The Camp Leader , Mr. Moses Asuquo , said there are no other camps for the returnees outside the Ekpri - Ikang IDP Camp for Bakassi returnees .
He alleged that the camps in Akpabuyo LGA were occupied by fake returnees .
But denying the claims that there was no fire disaster , Clan Head of Ata - Ema community , Chief Etim Okon - Asuquo , said that there was fire outbreak which destroyed make shift houses in the creeks of his community .
He , however , noted with sadness that those affected had yet to get any relief materials after he had personally acknowledge the receipt of materials sent by the NCR through SEMA .
“ There was fire disaster that consumed houses in the creeks of At - Ema and Day Spring. I was among those who went to receive the relief materials at SEMA in Calabar . But since we left SEMA that day , I have not seen anything.
“ Nobody has come to tell me anything. It is really sad . It is a show of shame and it means people do not have any regard for people . I am not just a community leader ; I am a clan head in charge of the whole clans in Ata - Ema . The people responsible for this should be brought to book so that we put an end to this thing, ” he lamented. http://punchng.com/our-leaders-have-been-hijacking-relief-materials-bakassi-returnees/
Politics / Northern Elders Forum Backs Arewa Youth Group by soldierkunle: 6:15pm On Jun 09, 2017
The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), on Friday expressed support for the call by the Coalition of Northern Youth Groups for Igbos to leave the region within three months.
The group made its position known despite widespread condemnation that followed the ultimatum earlier handed by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum.
The forum expressed “disappointment” with the Northern Governors’ Forum for disowning the youth groups.
Ango Abdullahi, the NEF spokesperson, told journalists in Zaria on Friday that it was hypocritical for the Igbos to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s break up.
Mr. Abdullahi said: “I am disappointed in the decision taken by Northern Governors’ Forum disowning and condemning the agitation by this young agile and progressive youth groups.
“Let me ask these Northern governors, whom are they representing, are they representing spirits, ghost or people of the north?
“Recently, people from eastern part of this country, specifically Igbo, were busy calling for the Sovereign State of Biafra and from all indication their leaders including governors are behind them.”
According to him, whoever feels Nigeria “is not conducive for him” let him quit, adding that what the northern youth groups did was not a sin.”
He lamented that none of the Northern governors reacted to the persistent call for the actualisation of Biafra and other agitations.
Mr. Abdullahi said when Nnamdi Kanu was released on bail recently, over 100 vehicles escorted him to his residence including big personalities from the south-west and south-east.
“This is somebody who has been agitating for the breakup of Nigeria but his people were behind him, therefore, I am behind the youths.
“This is because the Northern youths are pushed to the wall, we have been calming them down in any event similar to this,” he said.
Speaking specifically on the Igbos, Mr. Abdullahi said the people from the south were always pretending that people from the north were cheating them.
“These people always pretend that the North is cheating them, not minding the fact that Southern Nigeria was developed by resources from the North.
“Please, look for a book written by Adamu FiKa, the Waziri of Fika, on Nigeria’s budget before and after independence.
“Each year, up to the time Nigeria gained its independence, none of the two regions was able to provide for itself.
“I mean none of the Western and Eastern regions had the money to effectively run the affairs of its region until they get financial support from the Northern region,” he said.
He recalled that the tradition had remained during the colonial masters and nothing changed after they left the country.
Mr. Abdullahi said it was the same money from the North that was used to construct Nigerian Railways, refineries and other facilities.
“First oil exploration was conducted using money from groundnut pyramid, cotton, hide and skin among other cash crops from Northern Nigeria.
“However, these people tend to forget all these goodies provided by the North toward ensuring the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.
“They always look down on us, feeling that Northerners are parasites in this country,” he said. (NAN) http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/233527-breaking-igbo-quit-notice-northern-elders-forum-backs-arewa-youth-group.html
Politics / FG Uncovers Massive Fraud In N’delta Ministry Projects by soldierkunle: 5:09am On Jun 01, 2017
• N 423 bn spent in six years, execution rate at 12 %
• Some contractors collected money without going to sites

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Uguru , on Wednesday said the Federal Government has uncovered some shady deals by some of the contractors that handled projects in the Niger Delta region between 2009 and 2015 .
He said while some of the contractors made away with the money paid them without appearing on the sites of the projects , some others managed to implement 12 per cent of the projects they were paid for.
Uguru disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by the Acting President , Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the discoveries were contained in a report of an investigation carried out by the ministry on all contracts awarded and projects carried out by the ministry from 2009 to 2015 .
The late Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan were the Presidents of the country during the period .
The minister said the report revealed that over N423 bn had been expended in the region by the ministry alone , adding that the amount did not include the sums expended by other intervention agencies .
“ From this amount , projects execution rate has been at 12 per cent with an average completion rate of a project standing at five years . The impact rate is eight per cent ,” he said .
The minister said he sought and got the council ’s approval to make the report available to relevant government agencies in charge of recovering government assets that were either misappropriated , misused or found to be idling in some quarters.
He said while those who deserved sanctions would be punished , others who needed to return to sites would be compelled to do so .
He said , “With this , it means all those who have accessed government resources for one purpose or another must be compelled to make adequate use of same , otherwise they will face the recommendation that goes with such violations .
“ That is our position concerning that report and we have received council ’s approval for that .
“ Sixty per cent cost has been paid out to contractors with 12 per cent completion rate . Sixty per cent of the amount of money appropriated which is N700 bn , 60 per cent of that constitutes N423 bn.
“ To find that such money has been spent in that region with the kind of work we see, shows that there is something tangibly and obviously wrong with how procurement had been carried out in the ministry .
“ The number of projects awarded was 427 and there is no uniform action by each of the contractors . So , the measure of action to be taken to address the shortfall of our expectations or commitment to contractual agreements will be the determinant of what will be done .
“ Those that require sanctions will be sanctioned . The sanctions may not be uniform . It will be according to the measure of liabilities hold by each of the contractors .
“ Some will be compelled to return to site . Some , of course , should be made to refund money , those who we have seen by their actions displaying criminal intent by collecting money and not appearing at sites at all .
“ The report is not just all about punishing people . There are also those who have performed well and are commended and the report recommended that they should be encouraged to carry on in their contractual commitments.
“ The report has also recommended that sanction will be taken against officers . There are rules . I don ’t know if they will amount to purge . ” http://punchng.com/fg-uncovers-massive-fraud-in-ndelta-ministry-projects/
Business / South East Businessmen Don’t Repay Loans, Bank Of Agriculture Laments by soldierkunle: 5:00am On Jun 01, 2017
The Bank of Agriculture has decried the alleged unwillingness of South - East businessmen to repay loans .
A representative of Bank of Agriculture ’ s South - East Zonal Office , Enugu , Mr Aaron Obigbo , who spoke at a workshop organised by a research institute , the Development Strategy Centre, Enugu, raised the alarm over the high rate of loan defaulters among borrowers in the South - East .
The workshop themed , “ Pro - poor growth , unemployment and poverty in Nigeria : A South - East agenda ” , was organised in partnership with the African Economic Research Consortium , Kenya.
Speaking at the workshop , Obigbo said the Bank of Agriculture was faced with challenges that stemmed from the unwillingness of its borrowers in the South -East to pay back loans obtained from the bank .
Obigbo also disclosed that businessmen usually disguise as farmers to approach the bank for loans in the zone.
He said , “ Our (South - East ) businessmen come to the Bank of Agriculture and borrow money and they will not repay .
“ Some will collect inputs and sell them . They collect these inputs as farmers but they are not farmers .
“ The man in the North will collect loans from BOA and pay back but our big men from the South - East collect this money and don ’t bother to pay back . ”
Obigbo also decried the inability of state governments in the South - East to take advantage of various schemes initiated by the bank , particularly the Anchor Programme, to better the lives of the people in the region .
According to him , while states in the northern part of the country are maximising the opportunities provided by the Bank of Agriculture , many states in the South - East are yet to identify with the bank .
Obigbo urged South - East governments to utilise the funding opportunities provided by BOA, and also abide by the institution’ s terms and conditions .
The Managing Partner of the Development Strategy Centre, Dr Cosmas Ohaka , in a paper presented at the workshop , noted that the steady growth recorded by the Nigerian economy between 2000 and 2015 did not lead to a decline in the level of poverty in the country within the period .
He said , rather , the poverty level continued to rise, despite the recorded economic growth .
“ Available data show that every region witnessed a rise in poverty incidence between 2000 and 2015 — the same period that Nigeria recorded steady growth .
“ This seems to indicate that increase in economic growth does not automatically translate to decline in poverty incidence in any of the regions in Nigeria ,” Ohaka said .
He pointed out that people with low education are unlikely to benefit from economic growth .
He said , “Even if growth continues for the next couple of decades , some people will still not benefit from it due to their level of education that makes them unemployable . ” http://punchng.com/seast-businessmen-dont-repay-loans-bank-of-agric-laments/

Politics / Reps Give IGP 24-hrs To Return 2017 Budget by soldierkunle: 8:35pm On Apr 26, 2017
The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, gave the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, 24 hours ultimatum to return all documents relating to 2017 budget carted away from the Abuja residence of the chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Sen. Danjuma Goje, by the police during a raid last week.
The House which condemned the invasion of Goje’s residence by the police, last Thursday, said during the action, the security agents broke doors, ceilings, soak-away and carted away documents, including reports of the 2017 Appropriation Bill.
The Green Chamber noted that the documents must be returned no later than Thursday so as not to jeopardise the passage of the 2017 budget billed to be laid before the two chambers of the National Assembly this week.
Also, the House resolved to summon IGP to appear its before an ad-hoc committee of the House, to be set-up on the issue, to explain the circumstances surrounding the invasion. The ad-hoc is expected to submit its report within two weeks for further legislative action.
This is sequel to a motion sponsored by, Hon Abubakar Yunusa Ahmad (APC, Gombe) on the “Need to check the excesses of security agents with regard to invasion of residences of law abiding citizens.”
Majority of members of the House, who spoke on the motion roundly condemned the invasion of the residence Goje, a former governor of Gombe State by the police, describing it as a breach of his fundamental human rights.
The lawmakers expressed anger over the way the police and other security agencies have been invading the homes of private citizens, without recourse to due process, under the guise of fighting against corruption.
Leading debate on the motion, Ahmad said the invasion of Goje’s residence amounted to a gross violation of his fundamental human right.
He noted that the manner security agencies in the country are going about the fight against corruption is not the way to go.
Speaking on the motion, Hon Toby Okechukwu (PDP Enugu) accused the security agencies of attempting to come the legislature.
He said it is the duty of the parliament to call question, anything considered untoward in the country and urged the House to raise to the challenge.
“They have cowed the judiciary. Now they have proceeded to the legislature. We cannot allow that. We must call to question anything considered untoward.
“Goje house was invaded, we don’t know the reason. This kind of whistle blowing should be driven by intelligence.”
Similarly, Hon Sergius Ogun (PDP, Edo) said the House must put a stop to the undue harassment of innocent citizens by security agencies in the country.
“They (police) should not get away with it. If a senator can be so treated. Where is the fate of the ordinary Nigerians. We must put a stop to it.”
However, Hon Ahmed Musa Soba (APC, Kaduna) while urging the House not to take a position yet on the issue, dismissed the motion as “judgmental”.
He said taking a stand on the police invasion of Goje’s residence, without an investigation would subject the House to public ridicule.
The lawmaker said it is the duty of the executive arm of government to arrest, investigate and perceived crimes, noting asking police to return document is tantamount to asking them to return their exhibits.
“This motion is not calling for investigation. It is judgemental. We should not be seen to be seated here to enforce anybody fundamental right,” Soba stated.
However, middle way into his submission, he heckled by legislators in favour of the motion. https://www.today.ng/news/nigeria/289640/reps-igp-24-hrs-return-2017-budget-documents-carted-gojes

Crime / My Wife’s Pastor Does Spiritual Matters In Our Room – Man Tells Court by soldierkunle: 4:34pm On Apr 12, 2017
A 52-year-old driver, Wasiu Oyedele, on Wednesday sought dissolution of his 23-year-old marriage, saying he could no longer tolerate the adulterous nature of his wife, Afusat.
He told an Igando Customary Court, Lagos that Afusat, with whom he had four children, had the habit of bringing her lovers into their matrimonial home.
“My wife brings her lovers into our home, and anytime I query her, she fights me.
“She used to come with a particular man into our matrimonial home and my children told me that the same man regularly visits her in her shop.
“On many occasions, I met her with her pastor in our room and whenever I asked of her pastor’s mission, she always said he came for spiritual matters,’’ Oyedele said.
The petitioner said that his wife got pregnant for another man after she had their first baby.
“My wife abandoned our 10-month-old baby for me and got pregnant for another man. She came back after some years and I accepted her,” he said.
According to him, his wife does not have any respect for his family.
“My wife used to call my father a witch and always fought with my mother whenever she visited; my mother has stopped coming to my house,’’ he said.
Oyedele also accused Afusat of being fetish.
“I saw charms in my wife’s room and I called our children and our neighbours to come and see.
“I believe those charms in her room caused my illness because anytime I go to the hospital for treatment, they always tell me to seek the help of a spiritualist,” he said.
The petitioner presented to the court pictures of the charms as evidence.
He also said his wife chased away his first wife who did not bear him any child by always mocking and calling her a barren wife.
The petitioner begged the court to terminate the marriage, saying he was no longer interested.
Rebutting some of the allegations, Afusat pleaded with the court not grant her husband’s wish, as she was still in love with him.
“Please do not grant my husband’s wish for the dissolution of our marriage; I am still in love with him, and besides, I don’t have anywhere to go,” she begged.
Afusat, 40, who is a trader, said she was not fetish and did not know how the charms got into her room.
The mother of four said she did not just abandon their baby to get pregnant for another man, but it was her husband that chased her out of his house.
“My husband chased me out of his house after I had our first baby and that made me get pregnant for another man,” she told the court.
The court president, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case till June 27 for judgment. https://www.today.ng/news/metro/285835/wifes-pastor-spiritual-matters-room-man-tells-court
Politics / Saraki’s Impounded Vehicle Was Not Budgeted For By N’assembly – Falan by soldierkunle: 7:22am On Mar 23, 2017
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has accused the Senate of trying to punish Comptroller General of Customs Hameed Ali.
There had been reports that the Customs seized an imported bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to Senate President Bukola Saraki.
It has been rumoured that this has been the reason the Senate has continued to summon the Customs CG.
However, Saraki’s spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu had said the Senate had not taken delivery of the vehicle when it was impounded.
He said, “A supplier was engaged by the Senate to supply a vehicle while tranfering the vehicle between Lagos and Abuja, it was impounded by the Customs. We believe that it is an issue between the supplier and the Customs because the Senate had not taken delivery.”
But Falana on Wednesday said: “The statement credited to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki is not a denial of the criminal allegation but an attempt to pull wool over the eyes of Nigerians.
“Even If we accept the explanation it means that the Senate leadership bought a vehicle that was imported to the country with forged documents.
“That has confirmed that the planned humiliation of the customs boss was borne out of vengeance. So it is no longer a case of individual liability but that of institutional criminal negligence.
“These guys have to invent more lies because the limousine was not budgeted for by the National Assembly.
“Or is it another case of padding of the budget? Why is the leadership always associated with forgery and fraud? Did the senate leader not distance himself from the controversial vehicle? So why did the leader of the senate allow the matter to be investigated by the ethics committee of the upper chamber if he was planning to wash off his hands like Pontius Pilate?
“Since there are many unanswered questions, the Nigeria Customs Service should go ahead and get to the root of the criminality with a view to prosecuting the culprits.” http://ynaija.com/sarakis-impounded-vehicle-not-budgeted-nassembly-falana/?utm_source=nnd&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=nnd

Religion / I Didn’t Make Promise Stephanie Otobo Marriage – Apostle Suleman by soldierkunle: 9:16am On Mar 06, 2017
… says she ’ s a blackmailer , I ’ ve no hand in her travails

General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide , Apostle Johnson Suleman , on Monday distanced himself from the arrest and detention of Stephanie Otobo by the police last Friday , March 3 , 2017 over alleged blackmail .
The allegation against Suleman came about one month after his interrogation by the Department of State Services over alleged incitement in his sermon in which he advised that Fulani herdsmen who came near his church should be killed .
The cleric in a statement by his Communications Manager , Phrank Shaibu , obtained by THE PUNCH in Abuja, said there was no amorous relationship between the said Otobo and himself, including a promise to marry her .
According to Shaibu, the lady was allegedly arrested by operatives acting on a tip off that the she had repeatedly tried to blackmail Suleman , including demanding N500 million from him , failing which she threatened to expose a purported amorous relationship between her and the Pastor .
Our correspondent reported that a legal practitioner, Festus Keyamo , had demanding N500 million on behalf of Otobo and also accused Apostle Suleman of allegedly procuring policemen to intimidate and detain his client unlawfully, having earlier promised to marry her .
Shaibu said Keyamo was misled into believing that there was an amorous relationship between Apostle Suleman and Otobo , addding that the lady was “caught up by her own machinations as she was arrested while trying to withdraw money paid into her account by the Church in a sting operation coordinated by the police . ”
He said , “ Unknown to Keyamo , the police was alerted following several attempts by the said lady to blackmail Apostle Suleiman . The police also recorded her conversations making the frivolous demand . The highpoint of the drama was her attempt to withdraw money paid into her account at the instance of the police . The lawyer should know that his client was arrested by the police with abundance of evidence confirming that she is indeed a serial blackmailer . ”
Shaibu also denied Keyamo ’s claim of an amorous relationship and a promise to marry her , wondering how such a transaction could have taken place without any iota of evidence .
He said , “ Let me place it on record that , the lady in question is a self- confessed stripper in a nite club in Canada , who like thousands of people that seek help from Apostle Johnson Suleman , called to pretentiously convey her intentions to embrace Christ and also needed financial help to keep body and soul as she no longer had a means of livelihood after quitting as a stripper .
“ Does Keyamo or his serial blackmailing client have pictures of the visit by Apostle Suleman or his representatives to her parents? In any case , how could such a relationship have existed when the Apostle and the said lady have never met physically ? How could he have made a promise of a house and a lifestyle comparable to what she has in Canada when he has never been to her house or seen her physically as to have an idea of her living standards?”
According to him , Keyamo must have been misled or excited by the prospects of getting a whopping N500 million, both reasons for which two letters were written and sent to Suleman .

Politics / Trump Speaks With Nigeria’s President, Who Hasn’t Been Seen In Weeks by soldierkunle: 3:14pm On Feb 14, 2017
LONDON — President Trump spoke by phone on Monday with the president of
Nigeria , whose countrymen have not heard from him in weeks.
Many of them have been wondering: Where is our president, and how is he doing?
The president, Muhammadu Buhari, 74, left Nigeria for a vacation on Jan. 19, which was later extended, his office said on Feb. 5, for medical tests and treatment in London. But Mr. Buhari’s aides have refused to provide details about his health or his whereabouts, or even to say whether they have been in touch with him.
The lack of clarity has spurred rumors — in a nation of 180 million that is known for its love of political intrigue and speculation — that Mr. Buhari might be in poor health or even that he might be dead.
One of Mr. Buhari’s predecessors, Umaru Yar’Adua , died in 2010 after a closely hidden chronic illness that led to a political crisis. Mr. Yar’Adua, who came from the largely Muslim north, was replaced by his vice president, Goodluck Jonathan, who came from the mostly Christian, oil-rich Niger Delta region in the southeast.
Mr. Yar’Adua’s illness and death unsettled the longstanding Nigerian tradition of rotating political power among leaders from different regions, tribes and faiths.
In Mr. Buhari’s absence, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, a Christian and a Yoruba from the southwest, has been filling in — a situation that for many Nigerians brings back anxious memories of the political tensions of 2010.
In a statement late Monday afternoon, Mr. Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, said that Mr. Buhari and Mr. Trump had “discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through provision of necessary equipment.”
The statement also said that Mr. Trump had “encouraged President Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing,” including the
release in October of some of the hundreds of girls whom the Islamist militant group Boko Haram had abducted from a school in the town of Chibok in 2014.
“President Trump assured the Nigerian president of U.S. readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism,” the statement added. “President Trump also invited President Buhari to Washington at a mutually convenient date.”
The White House had announced that Mr. Trump would speak by phone with Mr. Buhari and President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, but it did not provide immediate details on Monday, when he was also meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada. (Mr. Zuma’s office said that the conversation with Mr. Trump focused on “strengthening the already strong bilateral relations between the two countries.”)
Mr. Buhari’s special adviser for media and communications, Mr. Adesina; another spokesman, Garba Shehu; and an assistant,
Bashir Ahmad , did not respond to requests for comment made via Twitter on Monday.
The president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki,
said last week that Mr. Buhari was in good spirits and had joked about working late into the night, and that he was living at the London residence of the Nigerian high commissioner to Britain . (The high commission is equivalent to an embassy; Nigeria is a member of the British Commonwealth.)

Politics / Whistle-blower: FG Recovers Another $151m, N8b Looted Funds by soldierkunle: 11:16am On Feb 12, 2017
The Federal Government said it recovered another 151 million dollars and N8 billion looted funds from three sources through whistke-blowers.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos.

Mohammed sad actionable information given by whistle-blowers to the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation led to the recovery of the looted fund.

He said the looted funds do not include the 9.2 million dollars in cash allegedly owned
by a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, also a dividend of the whistle-blower policy.

“The biggest amount of 136.7 million dollars was recovered from an account in

a commercial bank, where the money was kept under an apparently fake
account name.
“This was followed by N7 billion and 15 million dollars from another person and N1 billion from yet another,” he said.

The minister reiterated the position of government that there was a primitive and mindless looting of the national treasury under the last administration.

He said the whistle-blower policy has started yielding fruit, few months after its adoption by the government.

“The whistle-blower policy is barely two months old and Nigerians have started feeling its impact, how a few people squirrelled away public funds.

It is doubtful if any economy in the world will not feel the impact of such mind-boggling looting of the treasury as was experienced in Nigeria.

”Yet whatever has been recovered so far, including the 9.2 million dollars by the EFCC, is just a tip of the iceberg,” he said.

The minister appealed to Nigerians with useful information on looted funds to continue to provide the authorities with such information, saying confidentiality will be maintained with regards to the source of the
information.

He also reminded Nigerians of the financial reward aspect of the policy.

”If there is a voluntary return of stolen or concealed public funds or assets on the account of the information provided, the whistle blower may be entitled to anywhere between 2.5 per cent (Minimum) and 5.0 per cent (Maximum) of the total amount recovered,” he said. (NAN)

Business / CBN To Eliminate Forex Black Market by soldierkunle: 5:50pm On Dec 20, 2016
The Central Bank of Nigeria will move to eliminate the foreign exchange black market in Africa’s biggest economy, the country’s finance minister said on Tuesday.
The naira trades, sometimes 40% below the official rates, against the dollar. Adeosun said the CBN has been mandated to scrap the damaging market.
The central bank (CBN) “has been directed to do this and CBN has promised to do something by putting a system in place to eliminate the black market because it’s damaging the economy”, Adeosun told a conference.
A CBN spokesman, Isaac Okorafor, said the central bank was working towards “ensuring that the forex market operates as effectively as we would envisage”.
He said the aim was to “ensure there is no black market” but did not give details of how this would be achieved.
Nigeria had pegged the naira to the dollar at 197-199 since March 2015 but the CBN scrapped the 16-month-old peg in June in favour of currency free float. But that has done little to change naira’s fortune. http://m.guardian.ng/news/cbn-to-eliminate-forex-black-market/
Foreign Affairs / Outgoing President John Dramani Mahama’s Concession Speech by soldierkunle: 7:59pm On Dec 12, 2016
lease, take a moment and read this:
OUTGOING PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA’S CONCESSION SPEECH
Good evening, my fellow countrymen and women. A few minutes ago, I made the most difficult phone call I have made, and may ever make, in my life: I called President-elect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party to congratulate him on his well-fought and well-deserved victory in Wednesday’s election.
The win has been emphatic. If anybody has reason to doubt the presidential results, the sheer magnitude of the defeat, which our parliamentary candidates have suffered, is the clearest indication that we have outlived our welcome.
Telling the world that I would graciously accept the outcome of the election was one thing, but confronting the stark reality of an electoral defeat is another harrowing experience altogether. But I had no option. The people of Ghana have said emphatically that they are taking away the power they gave to me four years ago, and I have no power to say no. Besides, I love the country that has given me the opportunity to serve in various capacities for nearly two decades and I will not do anything to undermine our democracy or threaten the peace we enjoy.
Before I continue, permit me to congratulate the NDC family, especially my campaign team, for putting up such a spirited fight. When I was growing up in northern Ghana, I used to hear stories of very spiritually powerful and dreadful cattle rustlers who informed cattle rearers before they actually moved in to steal the animals. They would tell the owner that “tonight, we will come and steal your cattle.” They were so powerful that they cast spells on those policing the cattle and drive away the animals away before the men who gathered to stop them could wake up from their deep sleep to gnash their teeth and endure the scornful gossips of their women in the morning.
When the time was up for these cattle rustlers, however, they were overpowered and captured by women. I think we lost because our time was simply up, and no amount of deceptive campaign promises could keep us in power. No amount of monopolization of the media space could save us. No amount of money could stop our defeat. No amount of local and international celebrity endorsements could help us. And no amount of vote buying could stand the irresistible hurricane of change that shook our nation on Wednesday.
I will urge my party members to stop the “blamestorming” that has started so that we brainstorm on how to get ourselves out of the mess we have put ourselves in. The future of our great party looks gloomy and we have to start work on how to get ourselves out of what appears like an eternal stay in opposition. In life, when you are hit by the subduing blow of misfortune, you have two options. You can allow that blow to crush you. You can also move on with the enormous lessons such misfortunes often present. I cannot immediately tell my next move in life, politics and my role in our great party. But if I should ever make a comeback to politics, the lessons I have learnt from our defeat should serve as the moral code which will guide how I guide myself.
I have learnt that the Ghanaian voter, though mainly uneducated and simple, is more sophisticated than we thought. I have learnt that it is unacceptable for the people to loot, hoard and splash during elections.
I have learnt that the calls of the noisy minority cannot be ignored because they largely shape the opinions of the silent minority, who we politicians exploit for our selfish gain. I have learnt that not all those who criticised us hated us. Sometimes the best way to express your love for someone is to be critical of their actions. If I should ever return, I will not display a “dead-goat syndrome” towards disaffection of the masses.
When those who opposed us cried foul, we retorted, “Hate can’t win.” Tonight, however, I am the first to admit that some hate can win. This election has taught me that the hate of corruption can win. It has taught me that hate of incompetence can win. Our defeat has taught me that hate of impunity can win. I have learnt that the hate of the obscene display of ill-gotten opulence wins. I have learnt that hate of mediocrity and deception definitely wins. And I have learnt that hating evil will forever triumph over the love of evil. That was what happened on Wednesday.
Another important lesson I have learnt from this defeat is that the success or failure of a leader depends on the kind of people he or she surrounds themselves with. While Rawlings appointed the likes of Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas as deputy ministers, I made the mistake of giving that respectable position to the likes of John Oti Bless. I have now realised, rather too late, that if I had kept the likes of Ben Dotsei Malor and Dr. Raymond Atuguba around me, they would have injected some semblance of sanity into the Presidency and given that high office an aura of respectability and decency. The praise-singing sycophants who act on the dictates of their stomachs are only specialized at telling you what you want to hear. Unfortunately, I did not listen to voices of reason. Our elders say a disease that will kill a man first breaks sticks into his ears.
A lot of the people who have called me to comfort me have maintained that I have been let down by my ministers and the people I trusted so much. I wish to take the blame for everything that happened to me. It is said that a man may fail many times but he is not a failure until he blames others for his failures. Nobody forced my appointees on me. Our elders say God gives us our friends but we choose our friends. And it is us, and not God, who will bear the consequences of any choice we make. Like the wood insect that gathers sticks on its head, I have brought this upon myself, and I will carry it alone.
Fellow Ghanaians, before I end, I will like to wish our President-elect, Nana Akufo Addo, the best of luck in his administration. I will, however, like to caution him to be very careful in order not to repeat the mistakes I made in my administration. His success or failure depends on the kinds of people he appoints. He should focus on the people and not the party. He should remember that after four years, Ghanaians will be demanding accountability from him. He and the NPP should remember that the shea butter that is gloating over the ill-fated salt because of a heavy downpour should fortify itself with ice before the sun rises. What has befallen us can befall you if you allow the intoxicating effect of power to blind you.
In 2008, the NDC won mainly because the NPP’s stronghold in Ashanti Region did not vote massively. In 2016, the NDC lost partly because our stronghold in the Volta Region taught us a lesson that we will never forget. We should begin to see them see human beings, and not votes, when we ever occupy any political office. In the NDC, Volta Region sounded like Voter Region. We referred to the Volta Region as our World Bank, but they turned out to be a DKM Microfinance when it mattered most.
Finally, I will urge civil society and the media to keep a critical eye on the new administration if our country can ever develop. I have realised that the corrupt journalists and members of the civil society who connived with officials of my administration to defraud the state or cover up rot did not only hurt the country but they are part of the reason I have to forever live with the humiliation of the first one-term president in the Fourth Republic. This is our country. And its fortunes lie solely on us. Let’s all stand up and be counted.
God bless our Homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong! https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10210039000664386&id=1017539400&refid=8&ref=opera_speed_dial&_ft_=qid.6363283964278179286%3Amf_story_key.5069499943195060417%3Atop_level_post_id.10210039000664386&__tn__=%2As
Foreign Affairs / President John Dramani Mahama’s Concession Speech by soldierkunle: 7:52pm On Dec 12, 2016
Please, take a moment and read this:
Politics / Ekiti Market Leaders Storm Markets, Forces Down Commodities Prices by soldierkunle: 10:02pm On Nov 29, 2016
Apparently miffed by skyrocketed prices of foodstuff on sale at various markets in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, a task force led by the Iyaloja, Mrs. Omowaye Oso, yesterday went round the markets to force down ‘high’ prices of good and commodities.
Mrs Oso, who is the President of the market women association in the state led her team to the popular Bisi Egbeyemi Market at Okeyinmi area and other adjoining markets in the state capital and order the drastic reduction of prices of goods, especially food stuff.
She personally sold the commodities to buyers who accused market men and women of selling their stuff at cut-throat prices on the excuse that the American dollar is consistently appreciating against the naira.
Garri, local rice popularly known as “Buhari rice” and palm oil were among the communities which prices were reduced on the orders of the Iyaloja.
A rubber of garri which used to sell for N200 was reduced to N100, twenty liters of palm oil which used to sell at N22,000 was reduced to N10,000 while a rubber of local rice was sold at the market at N400 as against N500.
She also ordered that the small measure of okro and locust beans be sold at N20 as against N50.
Mrs Oso revealed that the raid would be a continuous exercise as she and her team enjoy the backing of the state government and the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, whom she said were also concerned about the exorbitant prices of goods and service in the town.
According to her “The cost of goods especially foodstuff are too high in Ado Ekiti and it is the state capital that prices of goods and services should be the cheapest. The market women should have mercy on the poor because things are too expensive here unlike other Ekiti towns and villages.
“It is very unfortunate that market women in other communities don’t want to sell in their places, they know bring their wares to Ado because they believe they will sell it twice the price of what they suppose to sell it in their communities.
“As the Iyaloja, one of my responsibilities is that people don’t buy at cut-throat prices and we have the support of the state government, the Ewi and his chiefs in carry out this exercise which will be a continuous one and be repeated in all markets in Ado.
“It is unfortunate that 20 liters of palm oil which sells at N14,000 in Ikole is being sold at N22,000 in Ado but we have sold it at N15,000 now as against the N22,000 they hitherto sell it. The Kabiyesi has said he does not want hardship for the people of Ado.
“We have forced down the price of a rubber of local rice from N500 to N400, garri from N200 to N100. Ado is now getting a bad reputation for high prices of goods and services but we will not allow this to continue.
“We will continue to carry out our raids until our market women comply and anyone who cannot comply must look elsewhere to sell her wares. If you can’t sell your Palm oil at lower prices don’t bring it down to Ado again.”
Buyers at the market and other residents commended the market raid which they believe will save poor people who are struggling to survive.
Mrs. Adijat Oni said: “This raid is a good one because we had thought that the Ado market women are untouchable because they are notorious for selling at prices beyond the rash of the common man who is very hungry.”
Mrs. Oluwakemi Adepoju said: “For us in Ado Ekiti, this is a good development, we want Iyaloja to go to all cold rooms where fish are being sold and those selling imported rice to force down the prices. We are expecting them in five days time.” https://www.today.ng/news/nigeria/223571/ekiti-market-leaders-storm-markets-forces-commodities-prices

Sports / Mourinho Blames Luke Shaw For Donald Trump Victory by soldierkunle: 6:40pm On Nov 14, 2016
Manchester United boss clear where the buck stops, report Back of the Net
Jose Mourinho insists out-of-favour left-back Luke Shaw must take the lion’s share of responsibility for Donald Trump winning last week's US presidential election.
As the news sank in that the puce-faced TV misogynist will lead what used to be called the free world, Mourinho rounded on his Manchester United defender, criticising Shaw's failure to understand what drove Trump’s support among crucial demographic groups.
"How many doors did [Luke] Shaw knock on in Nevada? Where was Henrikh [Mkhitaryan] in Ohio?"
“Luke Shaw told me on Tuesday that the early voting data was positive, and that Florida was in the bag,” Mourinho told journalists. “I asked about Wisconsin and he laughed. So he trains with the reserves now.
“To compete you have to go to the limits,” Mourinho added, “But Luke [Shaw] and Chris Smalling thought Hillary [Clinton]’s ground game would see her take the swing states without much effort. Complacency is not acceptable.
“How many doors did [Luke] Shaw knock on in Nevada? Where was Henrikh [Mkhitaryan] in Ohio? How many leaflets did [Chris Smalling] deliver in [North] Carolina? For the team [Manchester United], you have to give everything.
Shaw rejected the idea that he is to blame for Trump's elevation to the Oval Office, insisting that he lacked the necessary sharpness for a 90-minute phone bank session, while also querying why it should have been his job in the first place to prevent an angry fascist from becoming the next leader of the world’s foremost superpower.
Mourinho is also believed to hold Timothy Fosu-Mensah personally responsible for the Brexit referendum, while also berating Anthony Martial for his part in the recent cold snap.
Please note: This fictional news story is not real. Obviously.

Politics / I Issued Buhari’s WAEC Certificate - Alex Ajayi by soldierkunle: 8:27am On Nov 13, 2016
Eighty-six-year-old Alex Ajayi is the first graduate from Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State. He was also the campaign director to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo during the 1979 presidential election. He talks about his life with KAMARUDEEN OGUNDELE

How was growing up like?

I was born on June 28, 1930. I was privileged to come from a literate family. My father worked with missionary priests who were Oxford-trained. Ado Ekiti, as a metropolis and occupied by agrarian people, did not develop as fast it should be in the beginning. Many towns and villages near and far from Ado produced graduates decades before our own time.

My father combined teaching with evangelism. He was in charge of three schools and three churches in Ikere in the 1920s. He and one other person established the first Olu Scout Troupe in Owo where I also became a member in 1941. My mother was also trained by the missionaries. My parents travelled to different parts of the country.

Which schools did you attend?

I attended many primary schools because my father was a headmaster and pastor. I started at St Luke’s Ikere and then St. Mary in Ode Ekiti. I later had a stint at Emmanuel Primary School, Ado Ekiti and in All Saints, Ogbonkowo, in Ondo State. I was at St James Igbara Odo, Ekiti, when my father was the headmaster and catechist there. I was at St Patrick, Owo, in 1941. My headmaster was the late Pa D.O Fagunwa who authored Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irumale and later became my class master at Igbobi College. I later went to All Saints, Owode in Abeokuta, Ogun State, which my father upgraded to Standard 5 and 6 till October 1943 when I came to Ado after my father was transferred to Aramoko Ekiti. I finished Standard 6 in Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti.

After leaving Christ’s School, which other schools did you attend?

I attended Igbobi College, Lagos from 1944 to 1949. At the time, the principal was the only member of the Headmaster’s Conference of England. I got sound education from the school. Because I belonged to a group of boys who were adventurous, we begged the school to allow us to sit for a high examination and school certificate when we were in final year.

We also sat for the London matriculation examination and many of us passed. I was able to teach my own mates while they were still in school because I left school months before them. I later gained admission into Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, an affiliate of University of Durham in England. The college produced Bishop Ajayi Crowther and all the great men of letters at the time. The first Nigerian Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Kenneth Dike, attended the university. I skipped the first year and spent only three years and that gave me a lot of advantages. Many of my seniors in grammar schools started working and could not continue with their education. That was how I became the first graduate in Ado Ekiti.

[b]Can you give insights into your career in the civil service?

I was the principal of Fiditi Grammar School, Oyo State, at age 26 in 1956 and produced the first set of students in 1959. I ensured that the school was stabilised before I joined the West African Examinations Council. I also established a football team and the late Teslim (Thunder) Balogun came from Ibadan to train my boys. They went on to win all their matches in the western region and even defeated the University of Ibadan football team 12-0. With that level of achievements, I joined the West African Examination Council as a pioneer staff. I was the first substantive Nigerian Assistant Registrar. I took over the control of the examination from the University of Cambridge. I took examiners to Cambridge for training across 10 years and trained them in Nigeria. I had the opportunity of issuing WAEC certificates to three former Heads of State: Buhari, Abacha and Babangida in the 60s. When I was in WAEC, I was put on the council of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1966 by the national government of Aguiyi Ironsi. I was put on three important committees. The vice-chancellor and others were interested that I became a full staff of the university which I was not really keen about. But I finally accepted out of pressure. When I was serving on the council of the University of Ife, I was among the three-member committee selected by Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the first chancellor. I was on the council that installed him in 1967. From the early days of my life, I never applied for jobs. I was just invited. I stayed at the University of Ife before I left for an examination correspondence college as a director and controller producing lectures for professional courses and involved with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Institute of Insurers and Institute of Bankers. I had the joy of launching these new lecture courses in the universities in Lagos, Ife and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Thereafter, I went into private business with the late of Oni of Ife and Leventis. I established a factory at Ibadan where I was a director and subscribing shareholder.[/b]

In those days, we produced carpet used by the Senate, the Nigerian Stock Exchange and others. The carpet companies in Lagos then were just distributors; we were the real manufacturers.

Did you hold any public office?

I served as the local government chairman of Ado Ekiti between 1973 and 1983 first under the military and again invited under the civilians without receiving a kobo. That was when I gave out my house as Senate to the then Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado Ekiti. I’m used to giving to charity. I have instituted a scholarship for the best final year student in Christ’s School since 1967. These are just some flashes of my public and private life.

How did you meet your wife?

It was during independence in 1960. We had a ceremony at a Race Course which later became Tafawa Balewa Square. A lot of my friends came all the way from Freetown to watch the independence ceremony in Lagos. So, I decided to take them out. They gave me an address. But when I got there, maybe they were not so sure of the address, there was no sight of them. I met a young lady in front of the house. I asked for direction and she tried to explain to me whether it was another street or so. That was how we met. The friendship flourished. We married six years later. She is a brilliant, healthy and virtuous woman. She was the captain of netball in her school and later captained all Lagos netball teams that toured the whole of the West.

How do you unwind?

I enjoyed dancing a lot. In those days, we had jazz, jive, swig; these took us to different parties and restaurants in Lagos. In the university on Saturdays we had hops and dancing in the theatre. In my days in London we had Saturday hops. I am a life member of Lagos Island Club. I was a founding member of Ado Ekiti Inland Club. I was the launch chairman of scouting movement in the University of Ife in 1971. I am a life patron of Boys Brigade in Ado Ekiti. I compose hymns and write poems. I am a life patron of the choir in St Francis in Lagos; a patron of the choir in All Saints, Yaba and in Emmanuel Cathedral in Ado Ekiti. This gives me enough time to relax and enjoy hymns.

Tell us about your relationship with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

My working relationship with Chief Obafemi Awolowo started with my father. In 1954, my father became a member of the House of Assembly in Ado Ekiti. Then, Awolowo was about founding the Action Group. At the time, not many people knew the difference between Awolowo and Nnamdi Azikiwe. They saw Awolowo as co-runner to Zik. Many people in the West then were Zikists. When members of the assembly were elected, it was on the day the assembly was going to open that Awolowo announced Action Group and started calling people to join him. I advised my father to stay with the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons because I belonged to a group referred to as Zikists Movement. Although I had just left secondary school then, Lagos gave us much political maturity because as students, we were allowed to attend public lecturers by the likes of Nwafor Orizu Zik, among others. Awolowo put my father on a very important committee. As principal of Fiditi Grammar School, Awolowo wanted to land his helicopter on the school’s field, but I insisted that the Premier must write a letter of permission, which he did. He wrote the letter and we allowed him to land the helicopter on the school’s field in June 1959. And he campaigned. I started visiting his house. Later on, Awolowo gave the first set of 200 scholarships. Before that, he gave out 40 to graduates and post- graduates students whom I was among. He wrote us letters personally at different locations to congratulate us. I replied his letter and thanked him. He was very pleased. I later became his campaign director under the United Party of Nigeria for the 1979 election.

You were Awolowo’s campaign director in Borno State for the 1979 elections. Do you share the belief that UPN was a party for westerners?

The intention of the founding fathers was to build a national party with branches all over the country. I had my office in Maimalari in Maiduguri, Borno State. Awolowo had his men all over the country. It was just the reception that failed. There were people that wanted to work with him in the North but they were in the minority. They were people that were anti-establishment who would rather be on their own. There was acceptance but not enough to change the status quo. But we still won a seat in Biu senatorial district. However, there was still rigging.

If the election was not rigged as you said, do you think Awolowo could have won the election?

No, he could not have won. There was suspicion in the North that the first coup plotters of 1966 wanted to make him the prime minister. There was so much distrust of him in the North because many leading northern leaders were killed in the first coup. So, they didn’t want him to become the president. But some still believed in him and worked for him. We still won a seat in Biu senatorial district.

Senate C’ttee Uncovers 1,691 Contracts’ Scam, 22 Illegal Accounts Operated by NDDC

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts wednesday uncovered 1,697 contract scams allegedly perpetrated by the management of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) at an investigative hearing organised by the committee in the National Assembly.

While the committee was scrutinising the records of contracts executed by NDDC between 2014 and 2016, the commission represented by its Acting Managing Director, Mrs. Ibim Seminitari, could not provide verifiable evidence of approval for 1,691 contracts.

Displeased by the development, the committee Chairman, Senator Andy Uba, ordered the commission to ensure it searches out verifiable records of approval for the contracts within seven days along with evidences of approval for all the contracts executed within the period as well as a relevant certificate of no objection from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP). It accused NDDC of presenting vague reports to the committee.

“This committee and by extension, the Senate, is not happy with this vague report before us particularly on contract award, date of award, level of execution, names of contractors etc,” Uba said.

The committee also queried the rationale behind the commission’s decision to operate 22 bank accounts before the implementation of Treasury Single Account (TSA) in 2015, bearing in mind that only four accounts were approved for the commission by federal government at the time.

The committee also frowned at the commission unilateral decision to operate unauthorised accounts and insisted that such illegal accounts must be thoroughly investigated. It therefore mandated NDDC to send the names of the 22 banks where the accounts were domiciled along with statements of such accounts before the implementation of TSA.

The committee was also irritated by the commission’s failure to pay accumulated tax to the tune of N28.7 billion to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as it equally ordered it to immediately begin to off set such volume of debt to FIRS.

However, Seminitari explained that of the N28.7 billion unpaid tax, N23billion had been owed by the commission before her emergence as NDDC boss, adding that the balance of N5.7 billion was a penalty imposed on it by FIRS. She also explained that the commission had entered into an agreement with FIRS on the payment schedule.

The commission was also accused of deliberately omitting its income figures in its 2016 income and expenditure report. This accusation prompted Seminitari to disclose how the federal government allocated N23.5billion to NDDC within the period under review as well as another N87.1billion proceeds it got from oil companies. But the committee viewed the subsequent explanation as an after thought.

While reeling out the records of the commission’s ineptitude earlier, Uba said: “The committee as part of its mandate of ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of the public account of the federation and on receipt of petitions of corruption on the award of contracts at the commission decided to embark on special oversight on income and expenditure of the commission.

“Sequel to the above, the committee wrote the commission on 23rd and 30th August, 2016 requesting for information on revenue, expenditure and personel information. The commission was to respond within the period of two weeks and on the 16th September, invited the acting managing director to appear before it on September 20, 2016.

“The commission refused to furnish the committee with the requested information and the managing director did not appear before the committee. The committee again wrote another reminder to the commission on the requested information and rescheduled the appearance of the MD to 22nd September, 2016.”

Politics / After Secret Talks: Buhari Takes Steps To End Feud With Tinubu by soldierkunle: 6:45am On Oct 23, 2016
The prolonged cold war between President Muhammadu Buhari and his erstwhile close political associate and South-West political strongman, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, may soon come to an end.

Reliable sources within the party told SUNDAY PUNCH during the week that the two sides began planning to bury the hatchet during a recent meeting that President Buhari held with some of Tinubu’s loyalists in Aso Rock.

The President had met with the trio of Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun governor, Chief Bisi Akande, and Senator Olusola Adeyeye last week Sunday. The sources also said both parties agreed that the President needed to take some confidence-boosting measures to restore Tinubu’s faith in him.

The two men reportedly fell out following what Tinubu and his loyalists saw as attempts to diminish his contributions to President Buhari’s victory at the 2015 poll and erode his political capital in his South-West base. Some supporters of the former governor had also complained that the President rejected Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, and worked against the ex-Lagos governor’s candidates in the Kogi elections and Ondo governorship primary, among other ills.
A reliable source who was privy to the events that culminated in the meeting said its seeds were planted during President Buhari’s three-day state visit to Germany. Prior to that time, Buhari and Tinubu had not had any private communication in a while. But the source said the President contacted Akande, who is one of Tinubu’s closest associates and a former Interim Chairman of the APC, asking him to see him in Aso Rock.

The President’s call reportedly came barely 48 hours after the controversial interview the President’s wife, Aisha, granted the British Broadcasting Corporation . In the interview which went viral, the president’s wife accused her husband of neglecting those who helped him to power in 2015. Mrs. Buhari also threatened not to support her husband in 2019 if the President did not change tack.

Sources said although both men’s relationship began to sour almost as soon as Buhari won the election, it deteriorated when Professor John Paden, in his book titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership,’ claimed that Tinubu was against the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Vice President. Both Buhari and Tinubu were present at the book launch.
Insiders say this did not go down well with Tinubu and his men, as the All Progressives Congress national leader’s camp saw it as yet another attempt by the President and his men to reduce his contributions to the emergence of the APC government and also rewrite history.
Shortly after, Tinubu in a scathing open letter asked the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to step down, after alleging that the chairman doctored results of the Ondo State APC governorship primary. Odigie-Oyegun, a former Edo State governor, who had been cautious in his initial response to Tinubu’s letter, paid a visit to Buhari in Aso Rock and thereafter launched an attack on Tinubu, describing his letter as ‘reckless.’

Seeing that he was fast losing at the centre, the APC chieftain, popularly known as the Jagaban (of Borgu), started reaching out to his political foes in the South-West in order to consolidate his influence in the region. With several meetings held, Tinubu’s most vocal critics such as Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Sir Olanihun Ajayi, among others, began to drum up support for him publicly.
A source in the presidency told our correspondent that Akande, who cut short his trip abroad to see the President, did not mince words during the meeting.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Akande told Buhari that despite the roles Tinubu and the South-West played in making him President, he had relegated the APC national leader and the region.

The source said, “Baba Akande told the President that they were not happy with him. He told Buhari that apart from not giving Tinubu sufficient consideration during the ministerial appointments, everything that played out in the Kogi and Ondo elections showed that the President was supporting Asiwaju’s enemies.
“Baba also said Paden’s book was a major slight and that they believed the President was aware of the content of the book before it went public. He further said some of the people around Buhari were hell-bent on ensuring that the President and Tinubu became enemies because of what they would gain from the crisis.”
The source stated that Buhari countered that he was unhappy with the acrimony in the ruling party and that he had tried to be fair to all parties. But Akande was said to have disagreed with the President in his response, and cited further examples.

SUNDAY PUNCH further gathered that Akande told the President to take practical steps to show that he was not fighting Tinubu and the South-West. While listing their demands, Akande and others told him that they needed to see more representation of those that helped him to power during the next cabinet reshuffle.
There have been reports that a cabinet change is imminent.
Akande, who travelled abroad after the meeting with Buhari, could not be reached for comments, but a top APC member close to him confirmed details of the meeting, saying, “They want Buhari to accept Tinubu’s list when he makes changes in his cabinet. They specifically told him that they are only in support of one of the South-West ministers in his cabinet. They also asked him to get the party leadership to hold the National Executive Council meetings regularly while also facilitating the constitution of the party’s board of trustees.”
A source close to the South-West leadership of the party disclosed to one of our correspondents that Akande and Aregbesola had met at the former’s residence in Ila-Orangun two Wednesdays ago before meeting the President.
Akande had been honoured by the Catholic Diocese in Otan-Ayegbaju, Osun State, where a school was inaugurated in his name. The late mother of a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who hailed from Otan-Ayegbaju, was also honoured by the church, which inaugurated a multipurpose hall in her honour.
APC leaders, members and supporters, including Aregbesola, who thronged the venue of the ceremony, accompanied Akande to Ila-Orangun as a mark of respect.
It was gathered that Aregbesola and Akande held a meeting at Akande’s residence, where they discussed the face-off between Buhari and Tinubu.
The source said, “We were at Otan-Ayegbaji together. We later accompanied Baba Akande to Ila-Orangun after the Otan-Ayegbaju ceremony. When we got to Ila-Orangun, both the governor and Baba Akande went inside for a very long time. I’m sure that was where the decision to intervene in the matter was taken.
“When they met Buhari, they complained about the marginalisation of Tinubu’s men. At the meeting, Aregbesola said they (Tinubu loyalists) were not out to fight Buhari, but that the President should consider the Tinubu group in terms of appointments.
“Buhari told them that he was not out to undermine Tinubu’s group and that things would change in the coming days.”
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said he was not aware of what transpired during the meeting between the President and the APC chieftains.
He said, “I am not aware of what was discussed with the President in the said meeting. As a matter of fact, it is not the nature of the President to disclose what people discuss with him in confidence during meetings.”

Politics / By Taboola N500m MTN Bribery Allegation: Presidency Orders Probe Of Abba Kyari by soldierkunle: 10:58am On Oct 21, 2016
By Kingsley Omonobi – Head, Investigation and Crime Desk-Abuja.
There are indications that the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Abba Kyari is under investigation by the Special Investigation Panel of the Nigerian Police Force over bribery allegations.
The probe according to Vanguard’s investigation is in connection with alleged N500million bribery money said to have been paid to the Chief of Staff by officials of South African owned MTN Telecommunications Company with the intent that the COS influence government to discontinue its heavy stance on the $5billion fine imposed on the company.
Recall that the NCC, Nigeria’s telecoms regulator, slammed a $5 billion fine on MTN for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered phone lines bought before January 2012.
In 2011, the NCC mandated all telecoms operators in Nigeria to register all existing phone subscribers before a January 2012 deadline.
The NCC had ordered that all unregistered phone lines after the end of the registration process should be disconnected from operators’ networks.
But MTN Nigeria, the largest telecoms operator in Nigeria, failed to comply with NCC’s directive and this is believed to have facilitated activities of terrorists and kidnapping kingpins who perpetrated several of their murderous and nefarious acts that proved costly to the nation.
However, following the frustrations of the telecommunications giant’s bid to fight the huge fine imposition, firstly through the courts and later through diplomatic means, an online media (Sahara Reporters) published a report on 20th September 2016, stating that officials of MTN gave a bribe of N500million to Alhaji Abba Kyari, to intervene and use his closeness to President Buhari, to influence the federal government to give MTN a safe landing.
Worried by the allegation, the Presidency is said to have directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to investigate the allegation and come out with findings regarding the accusation.
However, sources close to the investigation panel told Vanguard that after days of investigation, all attempts to get the publishers of Sahara reporters to come forward and avail it with evidence of the N500million bribe; when it was given, where and how the money was collected, has proved abortive.
Firstly, the source who spoke under condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said the fact that the online medium is based in the United States has not helped matters.
“Officials of MTN, who were invited and interviewed over the allegation, have vehemently denied that any such money emanated from the telecommunication company and that since the beginning of the $5billion fine saga, nobody had been approached for bribe”.
“Another thing is that if such volume of money was paid through the banks, discreet investigation of financial dealings on the part of MTN and on the part of the COS has so far not revealed any transactions of such”.
The officials of MTN drew the attention of the Police to the fact that the issue of the $5billion fine resulted into diplomatic exchanges between South African government and their Nigerian Counterpart to the extent that during President Jacob Zuma’s visit to Nigeria, the issue came up for discussion between Zuma and President Buhari.
They (MTN Officials) then wondered how issue of bribery allegation can be alleged against a government that abhors and is fighting corruption in all sectors of the economy.
Meanwhile there are indications that the Police Investigation team may conclude the report of the allegation soon if the grace period it has given the online media organisation lapses and they fail to provide evidence to substantiate the allegation http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/n500m-mtn-bribery-allegation-presidency-orders-probe-of-abba-kyari/
