Arrested BDC operator, Ismaila Mustapha aka Mompha, has instituted a fundamental rights enforcement suit before a High Court of Lagos State, against EFCC for his continued detention.

He is asking the court to declare that his continued detention since the October 22, on the orders of a Lagos Magistrate Court which order expired on November 4, is unlawful and constitutes a gross violation of his right to personal liberty.

Mompha, in the suit filed by his lawyers, who include: Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), Ademola Adefolaju, Kolawole Salami and four others, is demanding the sum of N5 million as damages from the EFCC.

He is also seeking a court order directing the EFCC to release him unconditionally forthwith from its custody.

And an order of perpetual injunction restraining the anti-graft agency or any person whatsoever acting for or on behalf of the agency from arresting and detaining him in relation to the subject of the suit without recourse to due process of law.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos office, has arrested a former banker, Rowly Isioro, and his wife, Ovuomarhoni Naomi, for alleged involvement in Business Email Compromise fraud and money laundering.

Isioro, a former assistant general manager with a first generation bank, allegedly laundered $1.49m through Naomi’s bank accounts in Nigeria.

The couple’s arrest followed a petition from the Federal Bureau of Investigation through the office of the Legal Attache, United States Consulate, Lagos, about their alleged involvement in computer-based fraud, stealing and money laundering.

In a new development to the disagreement between the Federal Government and some local government areas over who has the right to conduct marriages in the country, the Federal Government has published the marriage registries and places it has licensed to conduct statutory marriage across the country.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior, re-emphasised its position that it was the only tier of government permitted by the constitution to regulate and conduct marriages.

It added that formation of statutory marriages was within the exclusive legislative list and that it was the regulatory body for the conduct of statutory marriages and the issuance of marriage certificates.

So far, it has saved the country billions of naira by eliminating thousands of ghost workers. Between 2016 and 2017 alone, the Federal Government was able to save the sum of N208.4 billion in personnel costs. Government had earlier given October 31 as the deadline for all public sector workers to be enrolled on the IPPIS, to avoid their salaries being stopped as President Muhammadu Buhari hinted when he presented the 2020 budget proposals to the National Assembly. Many states also bedevilled by the vice have opted for the policy.

What was your experience during a military operation codenamed ‘Operation Python Dance II’ in the South-East in 2017, which led to the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra?

The experience was bad and very ugly because of the way we were treated by the military and other security forces. We were badly treated and not allowed to exercise some of our fundamental human rights. Our freedom of movement was curtailed and there were a lot of other infringements of our rights, but not just the members as the same ill-treatment was meted out to our leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

All of us had dehumanising and excruciating experience in the hands of the military. They treated us like animals and it was as if they knew what was planed against us at the Federal Government level. It hasn’t even stopped yet; even after the said Operation Python Dance was over, they still treated us as like animals. It wasn’t a funny experience. Right from the period of the military operation till date, our members throughout the South-East have been top targets for punishment and different kinds of ill-treatment.

In Ebonyi State, for instance, if they see you as an IPOB member, the army or police will arrest you. Many of our members are victims of that already.

At your age, why are you still agitating for Biafra?

I’m still supporting and agitating for Biafra because of what I have seen in the past and what I see happening in this country now. The Fulani people treat us like nobodies; they treat us as though we don’t mean anything to Nigeria. They see themselves as first-class citizens and see the Igbo and others as second-class citizens. This is wrong. If you consider the situation critically, you will realise that our culture and that of the Fulani people are not the same. The way they think and reason isn’t different from the way we do.

They are only after the development of their region and people, while others suffer. Go to the North, there are good roads and there is electricity; but here in the South-East, or other areas, what do you see? They should allow us to have our country and we believe it will happen one day.

There was pandemonium at the Ugbowo main campus of the University of Benin, on Friday when a graduate was gruesomely murdered by suspected cultists.

CAMPUS GIST learnt that the victim popularly called “Aficionado,” was taking part in a jean carnival organised for final-year students of the Faculty of Arts at the Twin-Lecture Theatre when he was shot in the head by the assailants around 6pm.

A source in the institution, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the late Aficionado’s body was later taken away by school authorities who came after the incident.

Another student who doesn’t want his name to be mentioned confirmed the incident, adding that there has been tension on campus since the incident.

“Yes, I can confirm it. The incident happened few minutes ago while the celebration was going on.

“A final-year jean carnival was being held for students of the faculty of Arts…and he joined them. Suddenly, we heard a gunshot.

We didn’t even know that he was the one that was shot. It was later that we saw him on the ground.”

Efforts to reach the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Michael Osasuyi for comments proved abortive.

But a source close to his office, who confirmed the incident, said that the case had been reported to the Ugbowo Police station while investigation had commenced.

The Federal Government has made known its intention to regulate the social media.
This was made known by Lai Mohammed, Information Minister.
Mr Mohammed at a press conference said the government would not fold its arms and watch while activities on social media set the country ablaze.
“It has reached a level that the government may just no longer fold its arms and allow this to continue,” the minister who has severally denied reports that the present administration intends to gag the media said.
Social media has been one of the channels where purveyors of fake news circulate false information to mislead the public.
The decision to regulate the social media comes weeks after the government increased fines for hate speech, an action that has been described as a move to silent critics of the administration.

Nigerian music producer, Don Jazzy in a recent statement has appealed to the Federal Government and the members of the Academic Staff Union of University ASUU over the use of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System IPPIS.
The FG had given October as the deadline for the commencement of the use of the IPPIS but ASUU insisted it wouldn’t make use of the system and are planing to make use of the No Pay No Work strategy to drive home their decision.
However, Don Jazzy in his statement called on FG and ASUU to find a common ground as students will be at the receiving end if they issue is prolonged.
On the ASUU-FG issue, I believe the leadership of the union can have amiable discussions with the FG, to find a common ground for tenable solutions to the proposed payment model. As Parents & Elders, we should be more concerned about Students who would be @ the receiving end here.

Referee chiefs have explained why Marcus Rashford’s goal in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool was not disallowed by VAR despite a challenge on Divock Origi in the build-up.
