AlphaTaikun: "Most families in Lagos with foreign sounding names are from Sierra Leone and Liberia and are returnees."
NOTE: Let me come in here. The poster whose post you quoted right above is saying EXACTLY the same thing you have posted here. Read his post again to get a hang of what he posted.
He CLEARLY said they are "RETURNEES" meaning they are Yorubas or descendants of Yorubas who returned home shortly before or after the slave trade from Sierra Leone (Saros), Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, British Guyana, Liberia (The popular Vaughan family and Jackson family from Egba in Yorubaland returned to Nigeria from the United States via Liberia), etc. Those who returned from Bahia in Brazil and Havana/Matanzas in Cuba settled largely in the Brazilian Quarters (formerly called Portuguese Quarters). Brazil and Cuba received the highest concentration of deported Yoruba folks (about 250,000 each from slave ship records in the 1800s) with many members of the different Yoruba Royal families being victims as well (such as some Alaafin Abiodun of the Oyo Empire's descendants). The famous Bishop Ajayi Crowther and Reverend Samuel Johnson who wrote the popular book "The History of the Yorubas" are both cousins for instance and are related to Alaafin Abiodun. One of Alaafin Abiodun's biological sons was also captured in battle and taken on a slave ship to Bahia in Brazil where he got married to another Oyo woman and they had a famous son born in Brazil called "Dom Oba." The war-tested or battle-tested Oyo people were the most populous among the enslaved Yoruba in Brazil and Cuba so they usually led a lot of rebellions or revolts in those two countries.
The Oyos, Ijesas, Egbas, Owus, Yewas, some Ijebus and Ekitis, etc, were the main victims or captives that were deported on slave ships during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade of the 1700s and especially the 1800s.
I hope that helps. I guess I must have Misinterpreted his comment because he said the people bearing foreign names are from Sierra Leone and Liberia which implies they are not originally from Nigeria. Your brief history on the returnees and the trans Atlantic slave trade is apt even though I have some few reservations. I’m also of the Egba clan and we can also trace our ancestry to the present day Abeokuta even though my ancestors later settled on lagos island and also of the Saro descendants. |

aswani: I am not sure who you are directing your last statement at but I am hopping you are not treating me as one of those.
For the avoidance of doubt, you people are as Lagosian or Ẹgba as anyone else despite being Peters, Marinho, Gomez, Pacheco, Coker or Scale (and these are a few examples of people I personally know from childhood off the top of my head).
In fact, I have never even known anyone to ask about the origin of such names when they meet the people. The only time those type of names ever came up in discussion was with the pronunciation of "Vaughan".
Like I said, in those days, it was retained not just because it was now your identity, despite knowing your aboriginal name, but because of the status situation on the Lagos Island. As it happens, most of the ones I mentioned never even lived on the Island sef.
Anyway hope that clarifies my position. My comment was not directed to you but the Monika I quoted…..even though I have also come across some comments in the past which wrongly suggested that returnees are not originally Yorubas or Nigeria and I laugh at such comments because it speaks so loud of their ignorance. Like I rightly said which your point also buttress my point. Most of the returnees are largely some of the Yoruba sub groups eg Egba which I also belong and we can trace how ancestry to the present day Abeokuta and we have families who still retain the names of our forefathers but chose to retain the English names given by the slave masters because it is now our history and can’t be wished away. I also didn’t grow up on Lagos island I know my agbole and I connect with home so well. The Macauley family happens be my cousins and the popular Adekunle on Herbert Macauley way where we have the panti state CID happen to me one of my ancestors as most land around that axis were my family land and most street around that ebutte meta axis were named after some of my ancestors. |

aswani: To be fair, that name gave them a status that their original Yoruba name wouldn't have given them. yes, that became our identity and part of our history……..though some of us were still able to trace our family and the original names of our forefathers but still chose to retain those names. And it is wrong for some ignorant people to claim that we are not Nigerians or Yorubas. |

Shikena: In a nation of over 200 million people you should expect a few aberrations here and there. With all our noise, Nigerians no reach 600,000 in America. A few hundreds in Mali is okay, they are exploring the world except if they are real victims of trafficking. they are obviously victims of trafficking, it’s just sad that some people can be deceived that they can get a better life in Mail….a country that is far less developed and economically viable than Nigeria battling with terrorism and poverty |

Evil is that you? Anyway we will still mock the little issue when the people there voted for someone under whose government terrorists are being romanced 😂😂😂😂😂 Muumu, as all you mentioned not been happening in your 5plot region for more than 3yrs now?? Where your region as been under the control of non state actor forcing you to sit at home every Monday, where schools and businesses have been shut which as crippled the economy of your region and having peopl deserted your region to Lagos and Sw to seek refuge…..did the people in sad yeast also vote for Tinubu?? Otondo, you keep talking about mocking people for simply exercising their constitutional right of voting their choice just like you have your right of voting you choice or is it by force everyone vote for your candidate Why are we then practicing democracy or having elections if everyone have to vote your choice of candidate with no achievement in is past public office……the joke is on you NwOSU 😂😂

Zionmdde: Tears? Who is crying? Those in abia state who didn't vote tinubu or those in kwara who voted tinubu?
Who cares what your so called average Nigerian and northerner think? Since they started thinking,.how far the country and their region?
You really think i am passionate about any candidate, I feel very sorry for you 😂😂😂😂😂 Pain is that you? You should feel sorry for yourself…..you not passionate about any candidate yet you want to mock those that didn’t vote for obi😂😂😂 So what makes the people of Abia better than the people in kwara Or in your delusional mind, Abia is safer than kwara Are they sitting at home every Monday in kwara?? Or are there no people been kidnapped for ransom in Abia? you can continue deceiving yourself…..kwara with the little security challenges it faced in the past is still far more safer and economically viable than your Abia state….go to ilorin and see your Okoro blodas doing their business in kwara but how many people from kwara are migrating to Abia?? NwOSU, reserve your tears till 2027, your gaslighting or mockery won’t still force people to vote your agulu well packaged fraud 😂😂

Zionmdde: Does that nullify the fact that I am free to mock those reaping the good fruits of their choice of leaders? muumu, you give a hoop about your mockery?? Na today Una don Dey Mock anyone who is not interested in voting your agulu well packaged fraud? the fact remains that bitter obi is not marketable, and this gives credence to what the average Nigerian and northerner thinks about obi, and that’s why he failed woefully in 2023 in the north and Sw come 2027, he will still fail so, and we will be right here waiting for your tears😂😂😂

Sheuns: What’s the issue if he is a Biafra sympathizer?
It’s not a must for us to be together as a country.
You say Igbos no good, okay, dem say let us leave, una say no, say union na by force.
If you don’t like someone, why force him to stay in your house? Isn’t it wise to push him out to go sort himself? there is no problem with obi been a Biafra sympathiser as long as he won’t be Nigerias president you cant be showing allegiance to Biafra and want to be president of a Diverse country like Nigeria |

But have problem with those who wants to be called biafrans
In Nigeria hypocrisy is an identity card
As I always say, you are free to vote a bad leader by whatever metrics you wish to
And I am free to mock you when you reap the fruit of bad leadership .let nobody gaslight nobody yes, we can see the example of bitter obi as a good leader with the way he governed small anamabla😂😂😂😂 make Una continue Dey muumu Una sef

FSBoperator: You don chook mouth for what you have no clue of.
Most families in Lagos with foreign sounding names are from Sierra Leone and Liberia and are returnees.
Those who knew their origins before slavery reverted back to their original names except Ajayi Crowther who retained Crowther out of honour for the man who converted him to Christianity. But same Crowther still reconnected to his roots but refused to become a Prince but chose to serve God by being a preacher. you are so wrong…..I am also a saro from Lagos island…most of the slave returnee traced their ancestry back to Nigeria, and know their original name like mine. But chose to retain the names given by their slave masters because it as become part of our history wether we like it or not…..most of the group are from Egba, ijebu etc they are not from Sierra Leon or Liberia like your wrongly claimed but were the point of entry back to Africa while most of them returned to Nigeria and settled in Lagos island and we have our agbole in the popular Brazilian quarters and one on the early settlers on Lagos island and developed most of the modern structure using the Brazilian style structure and are still standing today….one of those people are the famous Randle. |
