these are newly discovered areas where everyone seems to be on a level playing field and china can then funnel ungodly amount of resources to crack and dominate
the best example of this is green tech--batteries, evs, solar panels, wind...

in emerging tech, china comfortably beats russia
because russia does not have that spare human resource to devote to these new challenges
the entire 120m population is focused on keeping pace in the technologies bequeathed by the soviet union

then there are the legacy technologies
with a long shelf-life and very long developmental lead times

by the latter i mean, these technologies are eternally relevant and new advancements are typically incremental
in addition, everyone needs lots of time to develop the capability
there is no workaround. no shortcuts.

this is where you see stuff like semiconductors, engines, material science
but this is a very large section of technology
for instance, japan makes the best optical sensors
no one can match their capabilities
not the us, not china, not russia, not germany
all of them can make good enough, even excellent optical sensors
but for best-in-class, nothing beats a japanese

germany has the same degree of excellence in machining
which is why more than half of the industrial robots in china are made in germany

an easy example for russia is titanium components
russia makes the best
and this, like for the other technological giants, stems from decades of investment and r&d
the soviets invested in titanium metallurgy like the chinese have invested in batteries and solar panels
so even though china makes more titanium components than russia
for some of their next-gen tech products, they have to import russian titanium or components made from russian titanium

thus, because the soviet union was on par with the us in most technological fields
russia has a heritage that they wouldn't lose in the next 30-50 years

you see this in practice in the shahed conversation

when russia imported it from iran
they picked it apart
then analyzed every component and categorized them

and then they rapidly improved on the original shahed by tinkering with the individual components
to create multiple versions/variants of the geran
and even new drone marquees

because of their heritage in engines for instance
they were able to develop new engines based on existing russian engines
that outperform the engines in the shahed at the same low cost
allowing newer versions of the geran to be larger, more nimble and maneuverable, faster
to the point that they are now exporting back improved components to iran that allow for better performance like in anti-jamming

as long as russia continues investing in its legacy tech
it will always have a capable technological stack that can go toe to toe with anyone

so china may not import whole fighter jets, warships and stuff from russia
but their own indigenous substitutes need russian supply chains for performant components and will continue to into the future

still, russia is pretty much maxed out
which is why ai came to fore with a bang
and there is no premier russian ai llm model, ai-centric gpu chip, or even much research output compared to china to us

as i've said earlier
there is just not that much spare human resource to devote to new challenges

so russia is going to be very selective about where it channels its tech wizardry
they are obviously going to continue to heavily focus on areas that guarantees their national security-- propulsion, nuclear tech, space, material science; but in the coming decades they'll increasingly have to leverage tech from friendlies in areas that they've deprioritized
this is inevitable

but for the next 10-20 years
and due to the slow pace of mastering critical legacy tech, russia will still be a tech superpower

and i really do think not enough people make the connection to prioritization
for instance, russia makes really-good tractors
but russian-made tractors do not compete favorably with western-made and chinese-made tractors in the global market
not because of capabilities, but other extraneous reasons from access to markets to economics of scale

and so that's a capability that will atrophy and be deprioritized
while us, japanese, german, chinese tractor makers continue to thrive

now, and this is important, that 120m hard limit that russia has
plagues everyone but the other main rivals--us and china

so even in 70 to 100 years, russia will still punch above its weight
turkey, germany, japan, uk, france, iran, brazil, mexico, indonesia, pakistan
all of these great powers with superpower ambitions are not going to individually eclipse russia in the next century
but russia's superpower status is going to face a rude awakening versus china and maybe even the us if they find a way to stem the decline

i do not think that anyone in 2100 or 2150 will call russia a peer of china
if china continues at current brisk pace, that point could come as early as 2050
and i'm talking about a point where a russia-china comparison becomes like a uk-us comparison

and i do not know how russia will come to terms with that
it may feel like a repeat of the collapse of the soviet union
because after the soviet union collapsed, the us became the top dog
that was bad, but russia became a near-peer, the only occupant of a second category that was still very much a superpower class
and everyone else was several leagues behind, including china and india

the next century may bring many painful changes in that regard
this is not new per se
the russian empire did share the stage with other empires, the chinese, japanese, french, brits, ottomans and it even found a way to excel and grow bigger and richer at the expense of the others
but this will be different
