Crime / Nigerians To Answer Scam Charges In Jamaica by sorom4: 5:14am On Jul 27, 2020
Two Nigerians are to appear in court on Wednesday to answer to breaches of the Lottery Scam Act.

They are 34-year-old Folashade Bakare and 32-year-old Yusuf Abiodun Bakare, both from the Nigerian city of Lagos.

They will also answer to charges of breaching the Immigration Act.

The two, who were living in Bogue Heights in St James, were arrested last Wednesday as they collected packages at the cargo section of the Sangster International Airport. When the packages were searched, customs officers discovered that it contained bank cards. When they could not satisfactorily account for the items, the police were called in.

An investigation followed and identity information belonging to other persons were allegedly found. A search of their premises revealed additional devices that reportedly contained identity information of persons residing overseas.

The charges were laid by detectives attached to the Area One Lottery Scamming Task Force.

Sports / Mythbuster: 'penaldo'! Are Most Of Cristiano's Goals Spot-kicks? by sorom4: 2:43pm On Mar 26, 2020
The Portuguese forward is one of the most prolific players in football history yet he has long been dogged by accusations that he relies on penalties
Cristiano Ronaldo was feeling quite rightly pleased with himself after scoring four goals against Malmo on December 9, 2015 to become the first player to ever hit double figures in the Champions League group stage.

Consequently, he was more than happy to speak to the press in the mixed zone after the game at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, it was there that his mood changed suddenly – and understandably – when he was asked about the idea that too many of his goals are penalties.

It was an utterly bizarre time to pose such a question, given not one of the goals he had scored that evening had come from the spot.

What's more, only two of his 11 strikes in the group stage had been penalties.

So, Ronaldo bristled at the suggestion that his remarkable numbers were somehow misleading.

"You have to look at the statistics," he said sharply. "How many goals have I scored for Real Madrid? And they are not all penalties."

And yet the nickname 'Penaldo' had already become commonly used by his detractors, of which there are still many today.

Ronaldo may have his faults but the idea that he is not one of the greatest and most complete goalscorers the game has ever seen is outrageous.

It seems to stem from the start of his time at Madrid, whom he joined from Manchester United in the summer of 2009.

Certainly, Ronaldo was indulged at the Bernabeu, where he quickly became the focal point of the Blancos' attack.

Gonzalo Higuain had a fine first season playing alongside the Portuguese, netting 29 times in 40 appearances in all competitions, but lost his role as Madrid’s first-choice centre-forward during the 2010-11 campaign to Karim Benzema, who was considered a better foil for Ronaldo because of the Frenchman's work-rate and selflessness.

The Sporting C.P. product had also already been installed as Madrid's penalty-taker and given first option on every single free-kick within shooting distance, while Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria were brought in after the World Cup in South Africa to provide Ronaldo with more through balls and crosses, respectively.

Ronaldo's numbers, therefore, exploded during his second year in Spain, with Madrid essentially set up to play to his strengths.

Not once between 2010 and 2015 did he fail to register fewer than 50 goals a season.

And yet all the while he was dogged by allegations that he was overly reliant on penalties, perhaps perpetuated by his rather over-zealous reaction to scoring a pretty inconsequential one in the dying seconds of Real's 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final.

There's no denying that Ronaldo's impressive figures over the past decade have been boosted by spot-kicks.

He has both taken (107) and converted (93) more penalties in all club competitions since the start of the 2009-10 season than any other player.

However, it is worth noting that Lionel Messi sits second on both lists (64 from 82) and is never slated for allegedly being a 'one-trick pony'.

If anything, the Barcelona captain is sometimes criticised for squandering spot-kicks, so quite why Ronaldo should be berated for making the most of his (he has a conversion rate of 87 per cent) is anyone's guess. Indeed, Ronaldo would be many neutrals' first pick to take a clutch spot-kick for their side in any shootout.

In addition, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored a colossal 503 goals over the past 11 years – and only 18 per cent of them are penalties.

Admittedly, that is a far higher ratio than that of his great rival Messi – only 12% of the Argentine’s 545 goals for Barcelona during the same period have come from the spot.

Again, though, it feels like Ronaldo is a victim of not only a certain degree of snobbery when it comes to evaluating the worth of his goals but also double standards, especially given the fact that a fifth of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's 267 goals since the 2008-09 season have been penalties.

The Swedish striker certainly doesn’t have to put up with claims that he would not be as prolific without penalties. Ibrahimovic remains widely renowned as both a great goalscorer and a scorer of great goals.

As Ronaldo should be too. We are talking about Real Madrid's all-time record goalscorer and a man who recently equalled the Serie A record for goals in consecutive games (11) with Juventus.

His game may have changed through years – it would have been impossible for him to still be operating as a fleet-footed winger at the highest level at the age of 35 had he not focused his attention on scoring goals – and he is undeniably a polarising figure.

For example, he is also widely thought to be a selfish forward and yet he ranks joint-sixth for assists in all competitions since 2009-10 – level with Cesc Fabregas but above playmakers such as David Silva (131), Kevin De Bruyne (127) and Eden Hazard (121).

Of course, football fans are free to dislike a footballer all they want. But the ‘Penaldo’ nickname is as petty as it is inaccurate.

Anyone who thinks any different need only “look at the statistics”.

Education / Marching Ground Fees During JAMB Examinations by sorom4: 2:17pm On Mar 15, 2020
We are always our own problem in this country.

Some people in this country wants to continue to plunge this nation into corruption. I'm wondering why JAMB candidates in Imo State are mandated to pay N1000 after paying a huge amount of money for their 2020 JAMB forms before they will write their examinations.

This money is usually collected before they will be allowed to go into the examination hall. Failure to pay means that you will not be allowed to thumb print nor sit for the examinations.
Just imagine the number of people in a particular centre that will pay this money bearing in mind that the examination have more than 300 candidates and it is done twice a day. That means that the centre is going home with nothing less than N600,000 per day and check how much it will amount to for the number of days that the examinations will hold in a particular centre.

Who is collecting these money? Is it JAMB? If not, What has been done about it? What is the money used for? What is marching ground fee? Is it part of JAMB regulations?

I ask the constituted authorities to look into this and punish all those who are engaging in this illegality.

Foreign Affairs / Iran Admits That Ukrain Jet Was Unintentionally Shot by sorom4: 12:58pm On Jan 11, 2020
Iran has admitted "unintentionally" shooting down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 people on board.

An investigation found that "missiles fired due to human error", President Hassan Rouhani said. He described the crash as an "unforgivable mistake".

The military said the jet turned towards a sensitive site belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and was then mistaken for a cruise missile.

Iran had previously rejected suggestions that it was to blame.

The downing of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 on Wednesday came just hours after Iran carried out missile strikes on two airbases housing US forces in Iraq.

The strikes were a response to the killing of senior Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Baghdad on 3 January.

Plane crash victims 'were the best of us'
Why were so many Canadians on the plane?
Iran initially denied reports that one of its missiles had brought down the Ukrainian plane near the capital, Tehran. But pressure quickly mounted after Western intelligence officials said evidence pointed to Iranian involvement.
The Ukrainian flight, which was en route to Kyiv, came down near Imam Khomeini Airport shortly after take-off. Victims included dozens of Iranians and Canadians, as well as nationals from Ukraine, the UK, Afghanistan and Germany.

What explanation did Iran give?
On Saturday morning, an Iranian military statement read on state TV announced that it had struck flight PS752 with a missile by mistake.

It said the plane had turned towards a "sensitive military centre" of the Revolutionary Guards, a force set up to defend the country's Islamic system. The statement said it had the "flying posture and altitude of an enemy target".

Because of heightened tensions with the US, Iran's military "was at its highest level of readiness", the statement added. "In such a condition, because of human error and in an unintentional way, the flight was hit."
The military apologised for downing the plane, saying it would upgrade its systems to prevent such "mistakes" in the future. It added that those responsible would be held accountable and prosecuted.

Brig-Gen Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the Revolutionary Guards aerospace commander, said the force took "full responsibility" for the crash.

He said a request had been made for a no-fly zone in the area before the incident but - for reasons that are unclear - this was rejected.

Gen Hajizadeh also said the aircraft was shot down by a short-range missile that exploded next to it. He said he informed the authorities about what had happened on Wednesday, days before Iran publicly admitted its involvement.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ordered the military to investigate "the possible shortcomings or mistakes" that led to the crash.

In a statement, he said there was "proof of human error" and confirmed that he had "requested the relevant authorities to take necessary measures to prevent" it happening again.

Foreign Minister Javad Zarif apologised to the families of the victims but laid part of the blame on the US. "Human error at a time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to [this] disaster," he said.

And Iran's ambassador to the UK, Hamid Baeidinejad, apologised for sharing "wrong findings" about the crash. He had said Iran was "confident" that a missile had not been launched.

"I conveyed the official findings... that [a] missile could not be fired and hit the Ukrainian plane at that period of time," he said. "I apologise."
