PoliticsFuel Subsidy Controlled By Demons – Tinubu by sosanova(op): 7:12am On Dec 19, 2015
National leader of All Progressives
Congress, (APC), and former governor of
Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
yesterday described the powers controlling
petroleum products subsidies in the country
as demons that must be stopped by
President Muhammadu Buhari.
The APC’s national leader also described the
subsidy as “many demons” that must end in
the interest of the masses.
Tinubu gave his view in a key note address
in Kaduna on the 10th memorial anniversary
of late Yusufu Bala Usman, former lecturer
with Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Zaria,
tittled “towards the economic liberation of
Nigeria: Bala Usman’s enduring relevance”.
Tinubu, who was very frank about the
removal of fuel subsidy, said if Bala Usman
were to be alive, he would have equally
called for immediate removal of the subsidy,
adding, “What I have said here is more than
talk. It is a call to action.”
“In a perfect world, I wish we could sanitise
the subsidy regime and thus, continue with
it.
“However, I have reached the conclusion
that there are too many demons in the
system for that hell to be turned into
heaven.
“It is better that we remove it, not for the
austere purpose of saving money but to use
the money more wisely that we might better
serve the people. Let us begin a process of
a thoughtful, but decisive subsidy phase-
out.
“While this is occurring, we should
simultaneously phase in social programmes
benefiting the poorest, most vulnerable
among us.
“Programmes such as transportation
subsidies, school feeding, improved basic
medical care and coverage for the poor, and
potable water projects are some of the
things that can be done with the same
funds.
“This is way we can undertake this massive
expenditure confident that the fruits will go
to the hungry, not the already too well fed.
“End the fuel subsidy. Subsidise the people
instead – Subsidise the people instead!,”
said the former Lagos governor.

Twelve Niger Delta militants groups known as ex agitators met on Thursday concerning the invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to one of their
leaders Government Tompolo.

In a press statement which was signed by a foremost
militant Mr. Egbesu Mightier Fraternity, the group warned
the Federal Government will ‘get what they want’ should
they continue to toe the path of harassing their leaders.
They issued a cease and desist order threatening
Nigeria’s strategic oil interests and hinting that any
attacks on Oil facilities will make things worse for Nigeria
in the light of the recent decline in oil prices.
“With oil prices slipping below 40 dollars a barrel, if the
government of President Buhari is willing, we will help to
reduce its price of barrel to 15 dollars.
Nigeria will collapse under the watch of All Progressive
Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari as we
will do everything necessary to actualize the American

“The silence in the region is a legacy of former President

provoking anger in the region is avoided or else every
region shall maintain their respective resources because

PoliticsObama Demands Quick, Transparent Probe Of Shi’ites, Army Clash In Zaria by sosanova(op): 4:05pm On Dec 16, 2015
President Barack Obama has
asked President Muhammadu
Buhari to immediately probe the
clash between the Nigerian Army
and the Islamic Movement in
Nigeria in Zaria on Saturday.
In a statement through its
Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday,
the United States government said
it was deeply concerned about the
clash, which resulted in the loss of
several civilian lives.
The statement reads:
“The United States is deeply
concerned by reports of violent
clashes between members of the
Nigerian Army and the Shiite
group Islamic Movement of
Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State
over the past several days.
“While many details of the
incidents that reportedly began on
December 12 remain unclear, we
are dismayed to learn of multiple
civilian deaths. It is essential that
all sides refrain from actions that
further destabilize the situation.
“The United States calls on the
Government of Nigeria to quickly,
credibly, and transparently
investigate these events in Zaria
and hold to account any
individuals found to have
committed crimes.”
The fallout from the clash has
since attracted international
condemnation, with the Iranian
government condemning the
killing of the Shi’ite sect members
by the army.

While that country’s Foreign Minister,
Mohammad Javad Zarif, called on the Federal
Government to take “prompt and serious”
action on the matter, its representative in
Nigeria has since been summoned back home
for briefing.
Several members of the Shi’ite sect were killed
when the army raided the area occupied by
the sect in the northern part of Zaria in
Kaduna State.
The leader of the group, Ibrahim Zakzaky,
was arrested.
The army had accused the Movement of
attempting to assassinate the Chief of Army
Staff, Tukur Buratai, when members of the
sect, who were conducting an annual ritual to
usher in the month of Maulud, the birth
month of the Prophet Mohammed, blocked the
convoy of the army chief in Zaria.

PoliticsNigeria's Department Of State Security Drops Charges Against Nnamdi Kanu, by sosanova(op): 12:50pm On Dec 16, 2015
Shuaibu Usman, magistrate of the chief magistrate
court, Wuse zone 2, Abuja, on Wednesday
discharged Nnamdi Kanu, director of Radio Biafra
and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra
(IPOB), on all counts of criminal conspiracy and ownership
of an unlawful society brought against him by the federal
government.

After holding that the government had dropped the charges
against Kanu, the judge ruled: “The accused person is
hereby discharged and the case struck out.”
The government through its agent, the Department of State
Services (DSS), had elected to withdraw the case at the
lower court for a higher court, which has jurisdiction to
entertain charges bordering on terrorism, to take over.
Usman was scheduled to deliver judgment on the
application of the DSS on December 1, but he put it off until
December 16.
The DSS has held Kanu for at least 90 days despite an
order of the magistrate court granting him bail in October.
After the lower court granted him bail, the secret police
got an order of the federal high court, Abuja, to keep the
leader of IPOB in detention. But his lawyer, Vincent Obetta,
filed a counter application, seeking bail for the accused
person. Adeniyi Ademola, justice of the federal high court,
Abuja, is expected to rule on the bail application on
Thursday.
A wave of protests, engineered by IPOB, had swept through
the southeast a few days ago owing to the continued
detention of Kanu. IPOB is demanding an immediate and
unconditional release of its leader.

PoliticsBayelsa Election: APC In Disarray Over Southern Ijaw by sosanova(op): 11:00am On Dec 16, 2015
Latest report from the camp of the candidate of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Chief
Timipre Sylva suggests that things are not adding up for the
party’s candidate in his bid to level up at the yet to be
concluded governorship election in the State.
It would be recalled that Chief Sylva trailed the incumbent
governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) in the election conducted by the Independent National
Electoral Commission, INEC in the state on December 5,
2015 before the election was declared inconclusive by INEC
based on reported cases of violence an hijack of the
electoral process in the Southern Ijaw local government
area of the state, where the election could not hold during
the exercise, thereby making INEC to reschedule the election
in the area.
Since the decision by INEC to rescheduled the election in
Southern Ijaw which is the second largest voting area in the
State after Yenegoa, the state capital, so bad has the
situation become that the support base of the APC
candidate has split into various fraction, with Chief Timipre
Sylva himself taking his destiny in his own hand by
personally criss-crossing between Yenegoa, the state capital
and the Federal Capital territory of Abuja, to woo
stakeholders within and outside his party, particularly,
President Muhammadu Buhari, with a view to salvaging the
nearly lost election for the APC.
But if reports emanating from these areas are to be relied
on, particularly the reported failed attempts by the APC
candidate to secure audience with President Buhari in the
last few days, owing to what has been described by inside
sources at the Presidential villa as President Buhari’s
displeasure with the reports from Bayelsa and the role
played by Chief Sylva in the aborted election, then, it can be
concluded that all is not well with the APC and its candidate
as preparation for the conclusion of the governorship
election in the state reaches its peak.
Those famliliar with the politics of Bayelsa had earlier
blamed the struggle for personal benefits to have
overshadowed the party’s target of winning the election, as
virtually everyone engaged by Chief Sylva, wanted to make
money from the electioneering as though there was no
tomorrow.
The situation was not helped by poll results from the seven
local government areas of the state, where election had
been concluded, before the postponement of the
cancellation of the elections in Southern Ijaw local
government area of the state, as the APC, was already
heading for a defeat.
Only yesterday, some chieftains of the party in the state,
accused the national leadership of the party of doing little to
garner support for Chief Timipre Sylva, after the election in
Southern Ijaw was cancelled. The party is not showing
enough in this regard, they claimed.
Meanwhile, as preparations continue towards the conclusion
of the governorship election in the state, several opinions
have tipped the incumbent governor, Hon. Henry Seriake
Dickson of the PDP, to win the governorship election, when
eventually concluded.
