Chelsea hope to persuade Rennes to sell Édouard Mendy, despite having their first offer of €16m (£14.2m) for the goalkeeper rejected.
With Kepa’s flaws last season, Frank Lampard is keen to sign a new goalkeeper after losing faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has failed to convince since moving to Stamford Bridge for a world record fee of £72.6m two years ago. However, Chelsea are struggling to find a club capable of affording Arrizabalaga and although they have considered trying to replace him with Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak, they have started to look at cheaper options to compete with the Spaniard.
It is understood that Chelsea would need to pay Oblak’s £109m release clause to lure him away from Atlético, making a deal unlikely. They have already spent heavily on other areas – they have paid big fees to land Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell, while Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva have joined on free transfers – and are closing in on a £90m deal to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen.

It was gathered at the late hours of yesterday that two prolific French big boys and Premier league stars are battling with corona virus disease.

One major name here is Manchester United’s Paul Pogba while another, Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has also tested positive for coronavirus, according to reports
The news was confirmed by France head coach Didier Deschamps after he announced the squad for the Euro games, with Pogba's place being taken by 17-year-old Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.
A Manchester United statement read: "Pogba has been replaced in the squad after testing positive for COVID-19. The midfielder will be unable to add to his 69 caps and 10 goals for his home country in the games next month. France is scheduled to play Sweden in Solna on September 5’ and Croatia in Paris on September 8.
Paul Pogba will have to self-isolate for a period of 10 days, and then be re-tested and if negative, allowed to return to training. Under Premier League protocols, all players must be tested when they return for pre-season. Pogba could be available for selection when Manchester United begins their Premier League season against Crystal Palace on September 19.

For all the plaudits that came Frank Lampard’s way at the end of the season, arguably the most important was that he was as good as his word in bringing through some of the talented youngsters on the club’s books.
Last season he gave senior debuts to no less than nine players who had been schooled in Chelsea’s Academy: Tino Anjorin; Armando Broja; Marc Guehi; Tariq Lamptey; Ian Maatsen; Billy Gilmour; Reece James; Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount.
Of those nine, Billy Gilmour looked every inch a Chelsea player before his season ended with a knee injury; Fikayo Tomori started well in a troubled defense making 23 appearances before mysteriously going out of favour and both Reece James and Mason Mount were fixtures in the side for most of the season.
No player has played more matches for Chelsea this season (53 appearances for the record). He has played as an ‘attacking Midfielder’, a ‘central Midfielder’ and on both the left and right wing.
His ability to play so many games this season has echoes of his manager and mentor Frank Lampard, who had an uncanny knack of chalking up appearances for Chelsea whilst remaining injury free. Lampard no doubt values Mason Mount’s versatility too, although it would be nice to see him nail down his best position next season.
However, when Mount is this talented and versatile, it’s hard to know what his best position really is? That’s something for Lampard to consider next season when he will have to fit in Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and possibly Kai Havertz in to his attacking midfield and wide positions. How Mount fits in next season will be a question on most Chelsea supporters’ lips during the summer hiatus.

Mason Mount can be very proud of his first full senior season with Chelsea. It might have ended on a disappointing note with the FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal, but there is no doubting the huge contribution Mount made to Chelsea reaching the final and also to securing fourth place in the Premier League.
In fact, two of Mount’s eight goals this season were crucial in Chelsea reaching the FA Cup final and securing fourth. He latched on to a wayward United pass in the FA Cup semi-final before blasting it past David de Gea to score the all-important second goal that eased Chelsea’s path to the final. In what was effectively a play off for the top four against Wolverhampton Wanderers, it was Mason Mount’s cool and superbly executed free kick, placed perfectly up and over the wall that settled Chelsea’s nerves to put them one nil up, before seeing the match out two nil when he assisted Olivier Giroud’s goal.
Mount freely admits that he needs to add more goals and assists to his game from the eight goals and six assists he registered last season. He also admits that there is no better man to learn from than his manager Lampard, Chelsea’s record goal scorer and a phenomenon in scoring so many from midfield.

In an interview with ‘London is Blue’ podcast, Mount sited Frank Lampard as the reason he went on loan to Derby so he could learn from and play for the man who is his idol.
Perhaps this explains the relationship and trust that Lampard has placed in his young charge. He has been the rock upon which Lampard built last season. Mount is Lampard’s man on the pitch, evidenced by the number of times he starts him. When Mount plays, Chelsea play.
More to the point, Mount has become the metronome of the side; effervescent in his energy, he dictates the press and the counter-attack so crucial to the way that Lampard wants to play the game. highest level and key for the modern midfielder, the maturity to track back and defend.
Furthermore, the goals he has scored show that he has great awareness and a lethal finish from the edge of the area as well as a cool head, as shown by the goal against Wolves. And yet this is his first full season in the first team; surely there is so much more to come.
Perhaps Mason Mount is the sorcerer’s apprentice. Lampard was not blessed with the natural ability of Mason Mount, but what he lacked in talent he more than made up for in hard work and a determined iron will to be the best.
I recall how much Lampard took Jose Mourinho saying he would make him the best midfield player in the world to heart. There is no doubt this encouraged Lampard to reach the greatest heights for Chelsea. One hopes that similar words of encouragement have been said to Mount by Lampard in his capacity of manager.
As a supporter, it is delightful to see a young player ‘get’ Chelsea like we do. This is one of the reasons why there is so much affinity for players who have graduated from the youth ranks. Mount has been with Chelsea since he was six years old. He might support Portsmouth, his local team, but I’ll forgive him that as my Dad supports Portsmouth!
Speaking to ‘London is Blue’ Mount revealed that he pinches himself that he is playing for Chelsea, having been at the academy that long. That affinity for the club gave him the determination and fire to win the ball and score on his home debut against Leicester, a goal that meant so much to him.
Mount like so many of Chelsea’s youngsters who broke through to the first team last season have been imbued with a passion to play for the team and a winning mentality instilled from a young age. They are all well aware that at Chelsea, the main focus is to win and to bring more silverware to the club and carry that history on.
Frank Lampard was Mason Mount’s idol growing up and now he’s arguably Lampard’s most important player. But there’s no chance that Mount would take that for granted. Knowing how Lampard likes to play and train gave him, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori an advantage at the start of last season. However, one of Mount’s endearing characteristics is that he never let up on his determination to work hard, get his head down and learn from the world class players around him. Very much like the manager did at Chelsea nearly 20 years ago.
Hopefully, like Lampard, Mount will be spurred on to work harder and prove his value with the arrival of big summer signings with big reputations.

Next season's Champions League group stage will get underway on October 20, at the same time as the Europa League's group stage return.

Arsenal and Liverpool will clash in the Community Shield
The Community Shield will take place at Wembley on Saturday August 29, the FA has confirmed. The traditional curtain-raiser for the new season will see Premier League champions Liverpool play Arsenal.
The match will be immediately followed by an international break from September 2 to 10, with England facing Iceland and Denmark.
The national team football windows of October and November 2020 will now feature triple-headers instead of double-headers, allowing the postponed European Qualifiers play-offs to be rescheduled at the beginning of the respective windows, on October 8 and November 12.
The first four rounds of the Carabao Cup will be played in September, with Premier League clubs joining at round two on September 15/16 and those who are in European competition entering at round three a week later.
The FA Cup third round is scheduled for January 9 2021 - and replays have been scrapped this season.
The 2020/21 UEFA Nations League group stage will take place on revised dates in September, October and November.
Euro 2020 will now take place from June 11-July 11, 2021. The 12 original host cities have been confirmed as venues for the rescheduled tournament

The semi finals of the Champions league just started and Paris Saint German have displayed their sparkling quality by putting three goals against highly rated German Leipzig.
Leipzig beat Atletico Madrid with a slim margin in the quarter finals to qualify for the semi finals where they were trashed both in possession, dribbles and goals. Neymar and PSG were outstanding throughout all the minutes of play and we can brightly envisage what powerful quality they’ve got to compete with whoever will qualify for the finals.

Jose Mourinho is one of football’s most prolific and outstanding managers in Europe.
