Hello everyone, my visa was approved on 13th August. I should have posted this a while ago but the past weeks have been very demanding with me having to resume school with a short time to prepare. My i20 start date was 20th August. I am settling in well now and I just know I have to post my transcript here because I have also benefited from this forum.
This was a very simple interview. Congratulations Fikky1.

Bayocanny, check for The Ohio State University. They offer full funding for the Communication Master programme.

If you are particular about ranking, they are 54th according usnews.

Acceptance rate is 54%.

I think application deadline is December 1.

I also think you can proceed to the PhD programme from your bachelor's if you have enough scholarly work. Check though.

Success!

Good day all. I finished with a second class lower, are there any us universities that will accept me for a Graduate program with this grade? If that is out of it, is applying for a second B.Sc. degree an option and if so, won't it be an issue during my visa interview? I'm 25y/o now btw if age will determine what kind of answer that'll be proffered. I'm open to all candid opinions. Thanks
You can apply for your graduate studies in the US depending on your exact GPA under the honour.

If it's 2.5/5 for instance, you could grade it on the scale of 4.0 and search for schools who don't have a problem with that. I don't think you need to go for another Bachelor's.

It would be great if you created a thread on life on campus and your day to day experience
Hopefully u consider it
Exactly, we'd really benefit from this. We need someone who is in the US on an F1 visa to tell us how it is there.

There are so many questions after the admission period we have unanswered.

Is it the beginning rough? How are you managing to cope? Made new friends? How did you get a green card? What's accommodation like over there? How much do you need to survive per month (an estimate of cost of attendance)? How smooth or stressful are the registrations? How difficult is it for those who don't have families or friends in America? How easy is to come back to Nigeria during major holidays and go back to school in the US? Is it possible to travel to other countries while on an F1 visa? And so many others.

It's just like when Nahum777 misplaced his bags in the airport, I am sure many of us learnt from that; or the two nairalanders who talked about being almost swindled by the black guy when they were figuring out how to proceed from the airport. I am sure people who have travelled since then have looked out for the black guy and his gang. It's the same way I have never been to Walter Carrington but I know the famous black woman grin and the white VO who wears Ankara.

I know it won't be easy doing this taking into consideration classes, assistantships and life in general, but it'd be nice if someone who has passed through this thread starts this. smiley smiley

Good day house, pls is it possible to commence application to schools while preparing for GRE retake to obtain a better result, then have the old result replaced by the new one? Recently wrote for the first time, scored 296 (not impressive), actually found several schools accepting the score but I intend to increase my chances for funding. Applying for Master of Public Health, Fall 2019. Thanks
Yes, you can. There are people giving the GRE soon who have started applications already. It all depends on the school's/programme's application deadline.

The idea is to submit your application before the deadline.

GRE can't conquer you. Your exam is in October, right? You'll be fine.

Yes, I'll check the school out.

What schools are you looking at? Most schools take communication courses, it's now left to you to pick based on certain personal criteria.

Best wishes.

Hello Guys. I guess everyone has settled in ? For those still trying to getting admission and funding, don't give up. Those of us who have benefited from here will do our best in helping others too.

By the way,I did change my school to Stanford. Remember the guy I was always mailing at Stanford? He was able to get funding for me as one of his prospective students left for Cambridge in the UK. So I'm super elated and glad. Though I wasted some money processing stuff to go to TAMU, I'm optimistic going to Stanford is worth it.
Whoop Whoop! Congratulations!

I don't know about other schools but UT Austin only requests the official transcript from your school after you have been admitted to the programme. So, basically you can submit the copy you have with you while filling in your application.

About funding, I also don't know about your department but most departments there fund the PhD students for three years while they are left to fund their last year(s) themselves.

How is your application coming? Most application deadlines for UT Austin is December 1.

Congratulations to those who have been given admission.

Please, I am planning for Fall 2018. I need your advice pls. Especially @Time2Smile @Scholastica @rezday and the host of others.

My profile is as below:

Intending course of study: Chemical Engineering (MS/PhD or Direct PhD)
Degrees obtained already: BSc (Chemical Eng 4.62/5.0) MSc(Petroleum Engineering 3.64/4.0)
GRE and TOEFL: Q156 V144 AWA 3.5 TOEFL(R22 L22 S20 W23)
(Intend to rewrite both before Oct 31st, 2018)

Experience: About 1 year as a Graduate Assistant, about 3 years of serious research with 1 Journal article, 1 conference paper, and about 3 ongoing manuscripts.

The following are the schools I came up based on my online experience.

The University of Texas at Austin
Colorado School of Mines
University of Oklahoma
Rice University.

My enquiries:

1.Pls, scholars should help me peruse the above list and give a critique of my choice with respect to my profile.

2. I need suggestions on SAFE schools for my profile with full funding opportunities.

Thanks and God bless you.
Do you mean Fall 2019 or Fall 2018?

Except for schools with rolling admission, I think the applications are over for the Fall semester seeing that some schools have already resumed.

If it's for UT at Austin (Fall 2019), application has started already. Most departments will close shop December 1.

To be honest, your profile is strong but I am not so sure about your GRE and TOEFL scores. I am glad you want to rewrite.

I don't know so much about your course of study, but with a good GPA (which you already have), GRE&TOEFL (as demanded), LoRs, SoP, and others, you'll get funding for your PhD programme. Like they always say here, it's a sin to pay for your PhD yourself.

There are many STEM students here, I hope they come all out to help you with safe schools you can apply to. You also have to keep researching. Don't forget to email the department's coordinators also to find out about funding.

Success!

However i want to reapply for interview to start by Nov as the sch allow new students to start by Nov. I had written to the sch to issue a new i-20 for bearing the nov date. They objected saying that they are told not to issue i- 20 form two times rather they will do the upgrade of my data and new starting date in their system that i should go with the old one bearing Aug date. In addition ,the sch will give me a letter of extension specifying that am to resume my Nov.

Got at the Abuja embassy by 8:30am, after the the bio-metric capturing, passport photography was rejected it too dark, have to go outside to snap a. brighter one

Me: good morning
VO: good morning, pass me your passport & I-20 form, which university are going to study
ME: Husson University, Bangor Maine
VO: she also mentioned the name of the school, is like for a better pronunciation, then she starts typing, she asked why did you choose Husson university while typing continuously
ME: stammer a little with crack voice, I choose Husson University to study my MBA, because it is a business oriented institution,
First off, aside the fact that these people can just see you and decide you are not eligible for a visa, you as a person has to understand how to make the answers your own.

I feel your answer to the "why you chose your school" was generic and boring (probably the same thing 90% of the applicants have said to them). Try to own the answer, I mean, there are many better business schools than Husson, but why Husson? Make it your own answer, don't go with the flow. Don't always forget to state how important your MBA will benefit Nigeria or your place of work. Don't give generic answers here too.

I hope the SOA you presented shows you have sufficient funding for your tuition and cost of attendance?

Also, I hope the school isn't a one building university?
Did you resign or have a study leave?

I think you should refire. You might just get it now (I really hope you do). Don't forget to up your confidence level, okay?

Success!

You'll need to post your interview, so the house can know where the problem is.

I don't see anything wrong with your profile save for the fact that you're 32 and your aunty will be the one sponsoring you. I'm not saying it's wrong because I've seen people on this thread get their visa irrespective of whether they've gotten to the "standard" age where they're seen as total independents who can foot their own bills but I've also seen people denied for this sole reason.

It could also be your level of delivery and confidence.

Like I already said, post your transcript so the house can help.

Did you write GMAT or any other standardized exam?

Now I have asked one of my counsellor to give me an I20 extension and he said that it is too late for that that I have an option to defer, pls what should I do?
I think you should defer to Spring 2019 (or the November semester everybody's talking about now). Now, you have enough time to get your visa, and prepare adequately for your travel.

Hi People,

So I was waiting to get my official scores to ensure any info I was putting out won’t be incorrect.

I took my GRE on Aug 10th at JKK house and scored a 326 ( V167, Q159), AWA 4/6.

The following materials helped with my study;
Verbal
- Magoosh GRE flashcards ( I used this while in the bus, boring meeting, toilet, intact any free time I had)
- Manhattan 5lb. The RC is really damn good and exposes you to all the tricks you will need on tests day. The RC and TC are good too.
- Official materials. The other books focus on heavily on vocabulary but the official materials helps you learn usage of words. Keep an eye on the tips in the sentences so as to know the right word to use in that context.

Quant
- Manhattan 5lbs. Go through all the questions here. It pays to review thoroughly any question you got wrong.
- Official materials. The questions here are good too.

It will also be good to point out that I was already studying for GMAT before switching to GRE. That helped with the quant and RC in verbal.

Practice tests are quite important. I took the two powerprep tests and also bought Manhattan practice tests (has about 6 tests).

Finally I will love to say something about registration. I know it saves money to register with the guys that do it at a low price but again consider this what if you run into problems with that and your account gets blocked. Between the trouble of having your account blocked which means you might no longer realize your American dream and the extra naira you might pay for registration, which is worth it.

Let’s keep sharing our experiences so others can learn. The things I read on this thread greatly aided with my preparations.
Congratulations! Please how many weeks or months did you study for?
