Some worshippers, on Tuesday, allegedly attacked officers of the Lagos State COVID-19 Task Force, who were enforcing the lockdown ordered by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

It was gathered that the officers of the task force were attacked by some Muslim faithful observing the Solatul Ishal prayer at the Agege Central (Hausa) Mosque.



A statement by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday said the worshippers, numbering about 300, rushed out of the mosque and started hurling missiles at the task force’s patrol vehicle and physically attacked the officers.

The General Manager, LASEPA, Dolapo Fasawe, who condemned the attack, stated that the agency was surprised that the authorities of the mosque, who were visited last week, could defy the directive of the government and also launch an attack on its officials.

She said, “The attack on the officers is barbaric and uncalled for. Our people are out to protect the lives of the residents of the state, yet they were attacked for doing their jobs; the state will not hesitate to sanction violators to serve as a deterrent to others.

“It was obvious that the gathering did not comply with the executive order. The mosque was filled to capacity. The essence of social distancing is to curtail the spread of the coronavirus. The people are endangering their lives and those of their neighbours.

“The government has to protect the lives of the people. The appropriate authorities will take the matter up and such gatherings will not be allowed to continue in the interest of all.”

Reacting also to the attack, the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, said, “We won’t relent; we will continue to appeal to our people to heed advice; prayers can be said at homes and businesses can be resuscitated, but this deadly virus is dangerous if not well managed and controlled.

“If not for us, but our families, friends and neighbours, let us do the needful and observe safety measures at all times regarding where we are.”

The Akwa Ibom State Government has rejected the test results of the five coronavirus cases announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday night.

It fingered irregularities in the testing process and thereby called on the Centre to conduct another round of tests forthwith.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the government said all the fives cases reported to have tested positive for COVID-19 were yet to show any symptom of the virus.

It alleged that the NCDC Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, was not aware of the results before the announcement.

The statement read, “We observed a disturbing breach in the test and reporting procedure. Akwa Ibom State Government only heard about the test results in the news

“The Director-General of NCDC was not aware of the reported result announcement.

“All five reported positive test cases have been contacted and they have shown no COVID-19 symptoms.

“While the tests were being processed in NCDC-approved test facilities, all suspected cases were held in isolation.

“Several sample batches have been previously sent for testing from Akwa Ibom State and they all returned negative results.

“Owing to the irregularities observed in the testing and reporting procedure, Health Care Professionals in Akwa Ibom State have called for an immediate reconfirmation test on the five reported cases.”

Lucky Strike and Benson & Hedges maker British American Tobacco (BAT) has become the latest firm to offer hope of a Covid-19 vaccine after revealing a breakthrough with its tobacco plant technology.

The UK-headquartered group said its US-based biotech business has been working on a potential vaccine for Covid-19, which it believes could offer up to 3 million doses a week from June.

BAT said the vaccine is now in pre-clinical testing and has the potential to offer a safer and faster way to develop vaccines than traditional methods.

It is being developed by its US firm Kentucky BioProcessing (KBP) using tobacco plant technology.

BAT said if successful and with the "right partners and support from government agencies" it could manufacture between 1 million and 3 million doses a week.


The maker of Benson & Hedges has been working on the coronavirus vaccine.
The group is currently in talks with the US Food and Drug Administration and UK's Department of Health and Social Care with hopes to partner with government agencies to bring the vaccine to clinical studies.
