Politics / Fuel Scarcity Comment: PDP Blasts Tinubu For Criticizing Kachikwu by stanleychimezie(f): 4:20am On Mar 28, 2016
THE former governor of Lagos, Tinubu has been taken to the cleaners by the opposition party over his criticisms of Kachikwu's bluntness as regards the current fuel scarcity. ‎

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemn All Progressives Congress leader Bola Tinubu for criticizing Minister of State for Petroleum, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, for his poor handling of the lingering fuel scarcity in the country.

Tinubu, in a widely reported statement on Sunday, had asked the minister to apologise to Nigerians for saying he was not a magician in bringing to an end, the fuel crisis.

However PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Jalo, said Tinubu lacks the moral right to criticise the minister knowing the role he played in the emergence of the APC-led Federal Government.

“If there is anybody that can condemn Kachikwu in this country it is not Bola Tinubu, knowing the antecedents and record of Bola Tinubu who was Lagos State governor.‎ We need a credible person to do that,” the party added.

PDP also faulted the minister.

“It is wrong for him to say he is not a magician‎, it is equally bad for him as a minister to allow fuel scarcity to linger for a long time. We have the means, the government is mapping out a lot of money from looters and other sources. So what went wrong?” PDP asked.

Politics / Fuel Scarcity: Resign Now, APC Tells kachikwu by stanleychimezie(f): 4:13am On Mar 28, 2016
TROUBLE is far from being over for the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday called for his resignation over the lingering fuel scarcity.

The APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had, on Saturday, asked the minister, who doubles as Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to apologise to Nigerians for saying he was not a magician to bring to an end the fuel crisis.

Kachikwu had, on Wednesday, told journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Villa that the fuel scarcity would last till May and that he was not a magician. In the face of public outrage, the following day, the NNPC stated that the minister was misinterpreted.

But yesterday, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-South), Prince Hilliard Eta, called for the resignation of Kachikwu, stating that the minister was still carrying the toga of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement made available to the media, the APC national vice chairman alleged that “Kachukwu has not entirely cast off the orientation of the Peoples Democratic Party where he was.”

Eta added that such orientation is still manifesting in his actions and utterances such as the recent one that attracted opprobrium from many Nigerians.

“In the light of the foregoing, Mr. Kachukwu must not be a cog in the wheel of progress and he should do the needful by resigning honourably if he is not capable of doing his part by efficiently running the ministry assigned to him,” he said.

The member of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) denied any major rift in the party, saying: “It is important to reiterate here that winning the federal election in 2015 has not eroded the core ideology of progressivism which we espouse as it is the very foundation on which the party rest.

“This progressive ideology strongly emphasises government as a tool for service to the people who are the custodians of power in the first instance. In line with this, it is not wrong or out of place for Tinubu to call the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu to order owing to the anti-progressive statements he made in the Presidential Villa on Wednesday March 23, 2016, while fielding questions from journalists on the persisting scarcity of petrol.

“Secondly, we in the APC believe that it is proper to immediately correct mistakes or errors committed by any member of the party, no matter how highly placed and we are developing a culture of accountability to Nigerians who government is meant to serve.

“From this perspective, it is therefore understandable that Kachikwu’s statement to the effect that he has no solution to petrol scarcity bedevilling the country drew flaks from Tinubu and this does not, in any way, imply that there is a crack within the party.

“In African culture, it is seen as irresponsible for an elder to watch a youngster or an inexperienced person blunder without immediately calling him to order.

“Furthermore, the South-South chapter of the APC feels that Kachikwu has not entirely cast off the orientation of the Peoples Democratic Party where he was and this is manifest in his actions and utterances, such as the recent one that attracted opprobrium from many Nigerians.”

Politics / Fulani Herdsmen Kill 4 Policemen In Benue by stanleychimezie(f): 3:50am On Mar 28, 2016
BENUE State Police Command has lost four of its men to the current Fulani insurgency ravaging some local government areas of the state.

It would be recalled that the state Governor, Samuel Ortom recently raised the alarm that nine out if the 23 local government areas in the state have been ravaged by the Fulani herdsmen.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, explained that out of the four slain mobile policemen, two were killed in Buruku Local Government while the other two were killed in Agatu Local Government area of the state, The Sun reports.

He however, assured that with the efforts of the State Commissioner of Police, Dibal Yakadi, normalcy, peace and orderliness was gradually returning to the affected areas.

He advised both the farmers and the Fulani herdsmen to embrace peace and allow security operatives currently in the crisis prone areas to do their work so that the victims who are presently taken refuge in internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps can return to their homes.

“This is cropping season and the people need to return to their farms, hence the need for both sides to embrace peace to allow security operatives currently in the crisis areas do their work.”‎

Politics / How Tinubu And Buhari's SGF Met With CCT Judge At Midnight To Perfect Saraki's F by stanleychimezie(f): 2:38am On Mar 28, 2016
IT is no longer news that Senate President Bukola Saraki is facing the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), but what may not be so obvious is the fact that justice administration in Nigeria is also standing trial.

Though there may be divers interests from different quarters, ultimately, Nigerians are unanimous in their desire for a free, transparent judicial process that abides by established judicial procedures.

This cannot exactly be said for the trial of Saraki at the CCT as there are strong indications of unethical compromises involving Justice Danladi Umar which incidentally tainted the ruling of the CCT delivered last Thursday, March 24th striking out Saraki’s application.

The question is, what would Justice Danladi Umar be doing in a nocturnal meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir David Lawal and the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Bola Tinubu on the night of Wednesday 23rd of March, less than 24 hours to delivering the ruling.

The SGF had hurriedly invited Umar for the meeting having sensed that public sentiments and legal opinions were weighing heavily in favour of Saraki’s application and against any possibility of striking out his application.

The fact is that the charge against Saraki is defective and in violation of Section 379 of ACJA which requires defendant’s statement to be part of the charge when being filed and also Section 3(d) which is an established precedent that requires prior invitation of the accused before charges are filed.

According to an impeccable source in close proximity to the Office of the SGF who craved anonymity, Umar on arrival at the meeting met Tinubu already seated with the SGF and the meeting which was very brief went straight to the point which was - Saraki must go.

Both men pressed it upon Umar to assume jurisdiction the next day and also proceed with the trial same day; a move that was contested by Kanu Agabi, Saraki’s lead counsel, after Umar assumed jurisdiction.

In order to avoid any mistakes, an untyped, hand-written ruling was given to Umar to go and read the next day striking out Saraki’s objection.

Expectedly, this impunity brought the CCT to grave disrepute the next day as Umar surprised the already exasperated audience with his incoherent delivery of the ruling, as he could hardly read the ‘ready-made’ judgment because it was not his writing and the sentences were difficult for him to piece together without creating moments of awkward silence and prolonged pauses which the audience could not help but notice.

Another issue of concern is the connection between Tinubu’s Nation newspaper and the CCT Chairman.

A day before the ruling, Nation Newspaper carried a half page news advancing a legal argument why the CCT will rule against Saraki and to the shock of observers in the court, the wordings used by Justice Danladi Umar turned out to be the exact words of the Nation newspaper legal report.

It is bad enough that Justice Danladi Umar perfected the legal argument advanced by the Nation newspaper but how then did the Nation newspaper know the words to be used by Justice Umar if not that whoever planted the story was the same person that gave Umar the judgment he read?

It is understandable though that the SGF oversights the CCB and CCT and wields an overbearing influence over the tribunal but his involvement in altering the course of justice may erode trust and confidence in the capacity of the CCB and CCT to serve justice in matters brought before them.

Of recent the CCT chairman has become a regular visitor to the SGF which our source said may not be unconnected with the plot to hasten the conviction of Saraki at all cost.

The underhand deal to convict Saraki by hook or crook is however, not without benefit to Justice Danladi Umar.‎

Umar has a case of N10m bribery allegation hanging around his neck and also a pending recommendation for his removal from the CCT by the former Attorney General to
the CCT by the former Attorney General to the Federation (AGF) Mohammed Adoke and former SGF, Chief Pius Anyim.

Our source also informed that she had learnt within the week that the SGF had spelt out the terms clearly for Umar that it is either Saraki is convicted or he (Umar) will be convicted. Umar was however assured that the recommendations for his removal will be withdrawn if he does the needful.

Sadly, the present scenario is a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and rule of law as it has become obvious that an accused before Danladi Umar’s CCT who has issues with the presidency cannot get justice.

The foregoing is reminiscent of the Justice Ayo Salami saga and makes a mockery of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption posture. It further empties Mr. President’s claim of non-interference in judicial processes, especially with the involvement of principal stakeholders in his administration in derailing judicial process.

Meanwhile a group of lawyers under the aegis of Lawyers in Defence of Democracy has expressed their resolve to petition the presidency and the Senate on the matter stressing that, “This brazing manipulation of judicial process by interested parties must be condemned by all Nigerians if we must safeguard our judicial system. We are calling on the National Assembly to investigate the racketeering of justice delivery at the CCT. We shall submit a copy of our petition to the Presidency and the Senate by next week.”

Politics / Buhari's Easter Message To Nigerians: I Won't Fail You by stanleychimezie(f): 4:34pm On Mar 26, 2016
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has assured his government will deliver on its promised change.
In his Easter Message Saturday, the president thanked Nigerians for being patient with his government in its first 10 turbulent months in office.

The president’s full text:

EASTER MESSAGE TO THE NATION FROM PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI

Fellow Nigerians,

I rejoice with you all, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, as we celebrate Easter.

For Christians all over the world, this celebration is in commemoration of the supreme sacrifice which Jesus Christ made for the salvation of mankind.

The Gospels also tell us that during his earthly ministry, Jesus Christ repeatedly urged his disciples and followers to “love one another as I have loved you”.

As we celebrate Easter this year, I sincerely believe that it will serve our dear nation very well if we all imbibe this essential message of Jesus Christ and truly learn to love our countrymen and women as we love ourselves.

Indeed, we will surely make faster progress towards the achievement of the peaceful, united, strong, progressive and prosperous country we all desire if, as a nation, we eschew all divisive, parochial, ethnic and religious sentiments and rivalries, and begin to live more harmoniously with our compatriots, as Jesus Christ and the founders of the world’s other great religions enjoined mankind.

Our unfortunate notoriety in recent years as a country where the blood of men, women and children are wantonly and callously shed in frequent orgies of criminal, political, ethnic and religious violence has become very embarrassing and utterly unacceptable.

My administration is determined to achieve greater peace and security across our nation by ending the avoidable conflicts and crises that hinder our national progress.

I ask for greater support from all Nigerians in this regard. We must put a stop to politically motivated killings. Our communities must be made safe again for all inhabitants to live together in peace and harmony.

Our armed forces, police and other security agencies are being progressively reformed, repositioned and empowered to win the war against terrorism and make mass killings, abductions and other criminal atrocities things of the past in our beloved country.

Let us all also play our parts as patriotic citizens and do all that we can to ensure that we make Nigeria a safer, more peaceful and happier place for its people and others.

Faith, belief and the fulfilment of expectations are also key themes of the Easter celebration. I urge you all therefore, to continue to have faith in the future greatness of our country and to believe that the CHANGE my administration promised will surely come to fruition.

That CHANGE, which we all yearn for, will certainly occur more rapidly if we all place the love of our country above selfish personal and group interests.

The National Assembly has just passed the 2016 budget. I assure all Nigerians that we will do our utmost best to ensure that the budget, the first since my election as President, is efficiently and successfully implemented towards achieving our objective of faster economic growth and development.

I thank the vast majority of Nigerians for their patience and understanding in the first ten months of this administration.

As we go forward, I assure you all that we are working very hard to overcome the challenges we encountered on assumption of office.

We are moving on with an unshaken resolve and determination to deliver on the mandate you gave us on March 28, last year.

I wish you all very happy Easter celebrations.

Muhammadu Buhari

Politics / Dasukigate: Air Force Chief Returns N66m Out Of N90m Traced To Him by stanleychimezie(f): 2:30pm On Feb 14, 2016
#DasukiGate: Air Force Chief Returns N66m Out Of N90m Traced To Him

The anti-corruption war may be yielding positive results as one of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) chiefs implicated in the $2.1 billion arms deal has been reported to have returned N66 million out of the N90 million traced to him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The said Air chief has been placed under house arrest at the Niger Barracks, in Abuja who is a Principal Staff Officer at NAF Headquarters, has been released from detention and asked to go and look for the balance of the money but doesn’t mean he is completely exonerated according to an EFCC insider who spoke to Vanguard.

It was gathered that the other officers being detained by the NAF High Command, on behalf of the EFCC, were not allowed the privileged because they had refused to cooperate fully with the EFCC interrogation team even though some had returned exotic cars and other valuables.

It was also gathered that an Air Commodore, said to have benefitted from the arms deal and has properties in Dubai, Kaduna and Abuja, has been arrested and is in detention.

One of the detained Air Vice Marshals (AVMs) is said to be the leader of the team that went to buy aircraft with incomplete parts and also inflated the price from $6million to over $30million.

It will be recalled that the NAF High Command had, on Thursday, stepped up its anti-corruption war with the removal of some officers including Air Officers Commanding and Principal Staff officers fingered in the arms deal and appointed new Air Officers Commanding.

Politics / Why Errors Surfaced In 2016 Budget - Presidency by stanleychimezie(f): 12:40pm On Feb 14, 2016
A senior member of the Buhari administration has disclosed the reason for the many shortcomings in the 2016 budget.

Premium Times reports that: "Another top administration official on Thursday gave further details on how the government was responding to the embarrassing budget allocations.

He pleaded anonymity, and said the government was avoiding publicly stating its position on the matter for now to avoid playing into the hands of its critics.

The official said both the Finance and Budget & National Planning ministries were determined to effect the necessary corrections and turn in a clean copy of the document for approval.

He blamed most of the errors in the budget on “over-ambitious civil servants” in the budget office who handled the preparation of the document prior to the appointment of ministers by Mr. Buhari.

He said by the time the ministers were eventually appointed, they had no sufficient time to properly scrutinize the budget for errors, in view of the tight deadline each of the ministries got before the final presentation to the joint session of the National Assembly on December 22, 2015."

Recall, after his election, President Muhammad Buhari took several long months to appoint a cabinet.

Many Nigerians criticized the delays in the appointments, however the President took 6 months to make the appointments and hand portfolios to the appointees. These delays resulted in some of the economic decline Nigeria is presently witnessing, according to analysts.

Respected economic consultant, Bismarck Rewane speaking on Channels TV News earlier this week said the delay in budget passage was going to further slow economic growth as the delay in government spending would not give room for the economy to be stimulated.

The Presidency in seeking to execute damage control has reportedly set up a “high powered panel” to investigate what Nigerians have dubbed ‘the budget of corruption’.

Premium Times reported an anonymous source in the Presidency to have said: "To enable the budget to be cleaned up of all the controversial allocations, the official said a high-powered panel had been constituted with a mandate to investigate all observations and concerns by individuals, media and agencies, particularly the National Assembly.

“The presidency has ordered the immediate investigation of all the allegations and issues, particularly on padding, raised by the National Assembly on various ministries, departments and agencies of government,” he said.

“The investigative panel is expected to critically look into the budget item-by-item, incident-by-incident, with particular attention to the reactions from the National Assembly, ministries, media, civil society groups or indeed anybody that raised concerns regarding the padding of the budget.

“All corrections would be made to ensure that the budget was passed as soon as possible. I assure you government is working cautiously on the corrections with the intention of correcting any error or malfeasance spotted in the 2016 Appropriation Bill. If there is any error whatsoever, it is being sorted out straight away,” the official added.

Politics / Why I Won’t Criticize Buhari - Reuben Abati by stanleychimezie(f): 12:25pm On Feb 14, 2016
Dr. Reuben Abati, ex-Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan has said he will not criticize the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration because he vowed to defend the Presidency.

The Former Presidential aide reportedly disclosed this when asked to comment on the controversies trailing the 2016 Budget, insisting that he took an oath of office to protect the President of Nigeria.

“If you have been following my writings, you will notice that I haven’t been commenting directly on government issues, I’m not going to say anything,” Abati told thebrief.

Suggesting that he has returned successfully to life after office, Abati said: “I’ve returned to my work as an intellectual, doing my own writings and reflections on society”.

He however, admitted that the issue was quite inviting but still managed to suppress the urge to comment.

In his words: “No matter how inviting the subject is…I’m not going to comment on Government. You see, the kind of job that I did, I took an oath of office to defend the President and the government of Nigeria.

“I would not have defended one government and then I will start talking bad about another President, I cannot do that”

“I’m no longer SA Media, but when you take an oath, its binding and my own understanding as they do it in America is that, that oath does not end, it does not expire”

“In the oath, they wont put the name of the President, you are swearing to defend the office of the President of Nigeria.”

Politics / Prosecute Okonjo-iweala & Jonathan, Oshiomhole Tells fg by stanleychimezie(f): 10:56am On Dec 02, 2015
EDO State governor, Adams Oshiomhole has
urged the federal government to also prosecute
former President Goodluck Jonathan and
immediate past finance minister, Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala for approving spending of funds
from the excess crude account without
appropriation by the National Assembly.
This is just as the operatives of the Department of
State Security (DSS) yesterday arrested the former
national security adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd),
while the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) quizzed former Sokoto State
governor Attahiru Bafarawa, and chairman, Daar
Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi in
connection with the on-going arms deal investigation.
According to the governor, Jonathan and the former
minister should be made to face law since it had
been established that they made approvals for which
billions of dollars released for the procurement of
arms for counter-terrorism operations under
Jonathan.
Oshiomhole while granting to Leadership
Newspapers insisted that both Jonathan and Okonjo-
Iweala must face prosecution because the Nigerian
constitution does not empower the president to
spend money not appropriated by the National
Assembly.
“The issue is whether the Nigerian President under
the constitution has the power to approve funds
belonging to local, state and federal government-
funds that have not been appropriated by the
National Assembly. That is a criminal offense for
which Okonjo-Iweala ought to face criminal
prosecution. These things are just discussed and
wished away. For me, I will stick for the truth and
don’t care what people will say”, he stated.
Quoting the Money Laundering Act which stipulates
that if one takes cash in excess of N5 million
transaction, it is money laundering and it is criminal,
the governor urged the federal government not to
prosecute Dasuki without the former president and
Okonjo-Iweala.
His words, “Talking about revelation, look at the letter
credited to Dasuki – the immediate past National
Security Adviser. In his defence which I read in your
paper, he seems to admit that money was spent but
it was approved by the President. Does the Nigerian
constitution empower the President to spend money
which has not been appropriated by the National
Assembly? And they took cash from the CBN. The
Money Laundering Act says if you take cash in excess
of N5 million transaction, it is money laundering and
it is criminal.
“So, by Dasuki’s letter, he has also confirmed that
Okonjo-Iweala is a privy to spending money never
appropriated and therefore criminal, and that cash
were being moved contrary to the money laundering
act. Just using Dasuki’s own defence, you can see a
case of conspiracy has been established between
Dasuki, Okonjo-Iweala and all those involved in that
transaction,” Oshiomhole submitted.

FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan this
morning narrowly escaped an attack by some
men suspected to be assassins in his home state.
Though we could not independently verify this
information, an online news medium
www.darelasisi.co.uk says the men who intercepted
and drove into a short motorcade conveying the
former President from the Julius Berger bridge area
of the State capital Yenagoa, chased the motorcade to
the entrance of the Yenagoa private residence of the
former President in the Kpansia area of the town,
before they were overpowered and arrested by a
combined team of security men attached to the
former President.
The news medium added that the members of the
arrested gang are now being taken to the
headquarters of the Bayelsa State Police Command
where they’re to be handed over to the police

Politics / Babangida: "I Will Vote For An Igbo President In 2019 If I Find One" by stanleychimezie(f): 4:10am On Nov 29, 2015
Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, says he is ready to vote for an Igbo president in 2019.

Speaking with The Interview, a magazine focused on leading professionals and politicians, IBB, as he is fondly called, described the agitation for Biafra republic as a distraction.

“We do not need this distraction now,” he was quoted as saying, adding that “I will vote for an Igbo president in 2019, if I find one.”

He also revisited one of the most controversial issues involving him – the death of MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 election.

He said he recieved the news of his death with shock but without regret.

Responding to the question whether he believed that Abiola died of natural causes, Babangida said: “I should know? I didn’t serve the tea…!”

According to Azu Ishiekwene, managing director of The Interview, the retired general also spoke on his relationship With President MuhammaduBuhari, Vasta Mamman, IBB’s childhood friend who was executed on his orders, and Sani Abacha, former military ruler.

Ishiekwene said in the magazine, which will be out next week, Babangida revealed how Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia state, arranged a meeting between him and Buhari in 2006.

“One thing you guys in the media want is for us to be exchanging words with each other each time we see,” he reportedly said.

Ishiekwene added that “Babangida spoke on the two ‘most traumatic’ coups during his eight-year regime – the Mamman Vatsa and Gideon Orkar coups – revealing, for the first time, a meeting he had with Vatsa before his trial began.

“The interview also covered Dele Giwa and the C130 Hercules plane crash in Ejigbo, which left 150 military officers dead.”
