Trading took off under the new rules for the Nigeria Interbank Foreign Exchange (NIFEX) market monday, with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) participating in spot and forward trading, where it met 100 per cent of demand in the FX market with a total of $532,867,169.11 and cleared the backlog of $4.02 billion pent-up demand for FX, respectively. Following the central bank’s forward and spot sales, the naira settled at N280 to the dollar on the interbank market, but for scores of dealers with higher bids, they ended up losing money. Details of the FX trading seen by THISDAY showed that the highest bid on the spot market yesterday was N382/$ while the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele had said last Wednesday when he unveiled the revised ground rules for NIFEX that “whatever comes out at the end of the day as the marginal rate will be the rate that is recognised officially by the world as the rate for the naira. I do not expect that another rate will be recognised in the market”. Dealers said there was calm in the market, even as operators said they saw the new FX rules as a big relief. A market source, who pleaded to remain anonymous, said: “The market opened as expected and we saw transparency of rates and price discovery in the market. But again, there was not enough trading as expected because people were careful. “But for the first time in close to two years, we saw live trading. It was like the market coming back to what we used to see in the past. Rates opened at N275-N280 to a dollar and later closed at N255 to a dollar before the CBN stepped in. But there wasn’t volatility in the market.” Meanwhile, the overnight tenor of the Nigerian Interbank Offered Rate (NIBOR) increased significantly to 15 per cent yesterday from two per cent last Friday, after the central bank debited the accounts of commercial lenders to cover dollar purchases by the banks. However, the naira, which had rebounded on the parallel market since the announcement of the new FX rules, depreciated monday to N345 to a dollar, weaker than the N335 to a dollar on Saturday. Providing clarity on the first day of trading after lifting the naira peg, the CBN monday stated that the foreign exchange market had a robust start, saying it cleared the backlog of $4 billion pent-up demand for FX with the naira exchanging at N280 to the dollar. The Ag. Director Corporate Communications of the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said last night that the CBN was happy that in its objective to clear the FX backlog, it performed its role as strictly a market intervention participant, while the re-launch of a functioning and efficient interbank market, was met. He said: “The CBN, in line with its desire to promote a transparent, liquid and efficient market, and in order to engender market confidence and ensure credible price formation, intervened in the market through special Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) addressing the issue of the FX demand backlog by clearing $4.02 billion through spot and forward sales. “This served in no small way to stimulate price discovery, with the determination of a marginal rate of N280/$ through the special SMIS process. “So we can state to you categorically that the FX demand backlog has now been cleared and behind us for good,” he added. He further assured market participants and the public that the central bank was resolutely committed to making the Nigerian FX market globally competitive, credible, transparent, liquid and efficient. He lauded market participants that collaborated in their conduct to achieving these feats and looked forward to another successful and historic day on June 27, when the market launches its innovative hedging product, the Naira-settled OTC FX Futures. Also, following the release of the revised guidelines for the operation of the NIFEX, the two-way quote (2-WQ) interbank FX market has gone live on the platform of FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange (FMDQ), with the CBN’s authorised dealers setting the pace for the market-driven trading window through the FMDQ Thomson Reuters foreign exchange trading system. The Vice President & Divisional Head, Marketing & Business Development, FMDQ, Tumi Sekoni, in a statement yesterday explained: “The interbank 2-WQ FX market will, through the concerted efforts of the over-the-counter (OTC) exchange and all market participants, serve to enhance greater investor confidence in the Nigerian FX market. “With its potential to drive transparency and liquidity, FMDQ, through the system, is adequately equipped to provide a complete and consolidated marketplace for FX trading and reporting, offering market participants and regulators a robust and flexible set of tools to support the full trade workflow. “The reforming of the 2-WQ interbank FX market brings about a lot of promise for the resuscitation of the Nigerian FX market and by extension the development of the nation’s economy.” On the Nigerian Stock Exchange, however, the stock market closed in the red monday as profit taking dominated, contrary to expectations that the market will sustain the bull run that began last Wednesday when the CBN removed the naira peg. The market surged by 7.4 per cent last week as investor sentiment strengthened on the new forex policy. But instead of consolidating on the gains recorded last week, the market declined yesterday as the Nigerian Stock Exchange All-Share Index (NSE-ASI) fell by 1.63 per cent to close at 28,760.90, from 29,257.27 last Friday. Market capitalisation shed N164 billion to close lower at N9.881 trillion. Market analysts said despite growing expectations that foreign investors would make a return to the market, profit taking thrived as investors off loaded most of the stocks that made significant gains last week. Bellwethers such as Dangote Cement Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc and Zenith Bank Plc were among the top price losers. In all, 33 stocks declined as against 17 that appreciated. Stock trading also fell by 67 per cent as investors staked only N2.25 billion on 416.662 million shares, down from N6.791 billion invested in 628.753 million shares last friday http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/06/21/cbn-clears-4-55bn-in-spot-and-forward-trading-as-naira-peg-is-lifted/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook. |

Lamido's issue should b big lesson to Northern youths. Don't misuse and abuse the privilege giving to your father or relation to serve the people. We should emulate yorubas and the Ndi igbos. A Yoruba Guy father can b Minister or Governor. Instead of being a nuisance and a thief by conniving with corrupt politician and contractors, the Dude would strived and excelled academically and lived an independent lifestyle outside his father or uncle cycle. Even if he would benefited from the looted public funds, hardly u see his traces because he has his own businesses and moreso a professional in a defined field. The reverse is the case for us children of the Northern elites. Ours would squandamaniar, recklessness and at the end exposes our parents illegitimate acquired wealth. It is we that would be known in social cycles in Abuja and Lagos. Flexing life from one club to the other and b the toast to most happening Babes. You cannot trace any meaningful business to some of these young Men but u will marvel how they spend hard currencies in Abuja and ride exotic cars simply cos their parents are in position of authority. We must learn now. Nigeria is evolving!be wise |
● ALL revenue generating agencies such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), MUST pay ALL their revenues into the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CFR). ● Agencies like NNPC would NO LONGER be allowed to withdraw funds that should have been remitted to the CFR to meet its expenses before remitting whatever balance it deems fit. ● Agencies like NNPC are now REQUIRED to present a budget of its annual operational costs for approval and subsequent appropriation ● Federal Government is obliged to abide by the provisions of Sections 80 and 162 of the constitution and ensure more accountability, transparency and integrity in the distribution of revenue from the Federation Account. ..............CONCLUSION............. The first major and let me say UNPRECEDENTED benefit of the reform is the $2.1billion proceeds from NLNG that was used to alleviate the sufferings of unpaid workers. During the days of "Goat-Eat-Yam" regime NNPC used to arbitrarily spend the proceeds from NLNG on alleged subsidy items. Gone are the days of fiscal recklessness, gone are the days of arbitrarily stealing Federally Generated revenue in the name of subsidies and operational costs! ~Jack Obinyan-Buhari 09/07/2015 |
esident Muhammadu Buhari has rejected the resignation letter of the National Security Adviser Col. Sabo Dasuki, on the grounds that he has to account for funds received under his tenure running into billions of dollars. Per Second News exclusively gathered that the NSA’s plan to throw in the towel about a week ago met a brick wall as he was instructed to do a thorough financial house keeping. According to a credible source in the know, President Buhari sternly told him that the resignation letter was ‘unacceptable’ . Per Second News learnt that the NSA had written a resignation to the President recently requesting to voluntarily step down as the country’s national security adviser. The credible Presidency source revealed that President Buhari’s refusal to accept the resignation was prompted by investigation showing that huge sums of money are being unaccounted for due to improper filing of contracts papers under Sabo. The unaccounted funds poses a “significant financial risk and demonstrates a lack of internal control over the NSA’s contract actions, according to the source. “more than $50 billion in which contract files were incomplete or could not be located at all,” according to a petition alert. Investigations by Per Second News reveal that billions of dollars were funneled into a secret account known only to the NSA, Jonah Otunla, a former accountant general of the federation and the Director of Finance, DFA in the Special Services Office. It was gathered that the trio were the only ones with access to the account through which several transactions and deals were done without passing through the normal channel and due process. According to a source the outgone accountant general of the federation was lured with N500m to create that account unknown to the establishment through which they circulate the funds. “This is part of the mess Sabo has been instructed to clear before his resignation can be accepted by the President, the source said”. “He has been given back the letter. Col. Sabo Dasuki is still the NSA and if indeed he is serious about resigning, then let him write another fresh letter after a proper financial accountability has been been submitted, said a Presidency source. Sabo has come under increasing pressure over his leadership. Per Second Newsreliably gathered that the Presidency has received some petitions of alleged impropriety, warning that there was “something rotten” in the NSA’s office. Findings by Per Second News also echoed critics’ concerns about spendings, and alleged lack of transparency and why billions of Naira were kept in the secret account. The Presidency is also concerned about some deals coming out of the NSA’s office, especially the issue of $9.3m South African arms deal, and repeated reports that Nigeria was conned into a failed Boko Haram “ceasefire” deal to the tune of almost $500m |

1. There's a massive amount of fraud in all the ministries and MDAs. #MBuhari does not like this. 1b. This is the first real transition from one government to another in Nigeria. Hitherto, it has been "Cover me and I cover you". But now, a proper diagnosis is going on to inform the right treatment. 2. Consequently, the President, #MBuhari is acquainting himself with the extent and the loopholes through which our funds were looted. 3. #MBuhari does not want a situation where some Ministers come in, start covering up and start looting using the same loopholes 4. Like when robbers rob a bank of ten naira, the bank manager announces hundred, pocketing ninety. #MBuhari is cleaning the system first. 5. The President, #MBuhari is working with the civil service Permanent Secretaries who helped to create the loopholes that wrecked our nation. They know the ropes so he is working with them to plug the loopholes. 6. Pres. #MBuhari wants to be able to give his own relevant and specific instructions to each minister so he can personally hold him/her accountable. 7. Again, we have never really had a proper transition in Nigeria and the PDP government of former President Jonathan did not hand over in ample time. 8. The practice has been to consign handover notes to the shelves to gather dust and continue to build on the rot in the system. But our new President #MBuhari, is different! 9. He was handed a foundation that is rotten and the President, #MBuhari does not want to build on a rotten foundation. He is working, cleaning the rot in order to give us a fresh clean start. 10. President #MBuhari wants to be a hands-on leader. Not one who delegates with no good knowledge of what is going on or what is expected. 11. Although it is constitutional, given the present state of our economy, how does #Mbuhari appoint 37 ministers in the face of the recommendation of his Transition Committee's recommendation that he merges some ministries to save cost? Our President is doing this Maths! 12. Therefore, be patient, Nigerians. In my view, #MBuhari is acting in the best interest of Nigerians. It will be seen in the months ahead that all he does, is to shine the light upon a nation that has known nothing but doom and gloom. 13. You see, #MBuhari is a selfless man. No selfish bone in him. He is thorough, no mediocrity in him. He is efficient, no inefficiency in him. We must be patient. He is working. For us. Lauretta Onochie @Laurestar |
