TESTIMONY TIME !!!!!!!!!!

I want to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone here especially Dr lagusta and other pioneer Bosses who kick-started this thread.

I had given up on studying medicine after staying back home for almost 5 yrs due to financial issues.

I visited Nairaland once in a while but never discovered this thread until last year, accidentally even.

I had just finished 100l in a biological course after getting admission in 2017 when things turned a corner for us financially.

I was generally unhappy with my life and was bordering on acute depression back then, until I saw myself here unintentionally.

The posts I came across here and the diaries that I read( and still following) lit a fire under my belly and I started believing that i could really pull this off inspite of me being a shadow of my Secondary school self academically.

I decided to give it my last shot and by the grace of God and with the help of most people here(bulk of them unknowingly) I am now a fresh medical student in Enugu State University (Esut) by Merit.

I will forever remain grateful to God and my Messiahs here.

Special mention goes to:
Lagusta
lomaxx
Starfx
Elzak
jargo89
Mandeyy

And many others( can't remember all their monikers), in fact everyone here played a pivotal role in my success, even those I kinda ruffled with, I learned from all of it and will make sure I put all I've learnt here to great use.

PS: I have a new account now (Medicblaze), this should my last post with this very one.
Clean slate.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

God bless you All.
Congratulations doctor Blaze keep the fire going...

You have a point there but graduates of the other courses you mentioned actually find it harder to survive.

You talked about a medical doctor earning 50 pin in a private Hospital?
Well the other health professionals/graduates will find it hard to earn 20 pin there or even get a job there.

It's a nationwide problem not a medical problem.
It is in all sectors.

Las Las it's all about passion and money, let's start telling ourselves the truth.
Few, very very few people study courses in Nigeria solely for passion.
At most 30% passion, 70% benefits.
The benefits sef is even in the passion.

95%+ of graduates and students of other medical courses All dreamt of studying Medsurg before opting for other courses for obvious reasons..even most BDS students(mostly due to ehm ignorance..hehe make una no roast me like corn)

Out of the remaining 5% or less, about 2% saw the light at the beginning and discovered they were simply not good enough and opted for other courses while they still can(not because they didn't want to)

The remaining 3% are those that actually wanted to study other paramedical courses which is dominated by nursing students(Mostly females here).

That. Is. the. Brutal. Truth.

If being a gatekeeper paid more and had more rep than Medical fields, most of us would be jostling for it.

Simple.. Let's not surgacoat it.

Unemployment rates and low standards of living na im cause am.

In this poo hole, it's all about survival first then passion and other stuff a very distant second.

There are exceptions, but extremely rare.

Yes I said it, and that is the brutal truth.

#Blaze
Brutal indeed

You're an intelligent man.
Another thing. No doctor earns 50k on a full time job, it could just be a locum arrangement. Doctors on the average do better than every other graduates, as per pay and ease of landing a job. People talk about IT, oil coys, how many engineering graduates get these jobs?
But at least impossible to see a doctor without a job after 2 years post graduation, unless that doctor is either dumb or mentally challenged.

Secondly, medicine and BDS is a skilled degree, you get to learn the art of doing things with your hands, and there are no limits as to the money or height you can attain once you have those skills. There are doctors who are billionaires, orthopedic surgeons, cosmetics and aesthetic surgeons. So, there's no limits to what a doctor can do, even in Nigeria that's terribly bad.

Please Young Minds,
Pursue your MBBS and BDS dreams with every iota of strength and enthusiasm youve got. Even if you don't have passion for medicine, but for the sake that you have to pay bills, be relentless in your pursuits. Don't allow post like this to discourage you from doing the right thing, which is studying a course that will truly empower to be not just self sufficient, but to also make a difference.
Forget all the gist about passion and how you need passion to do well in medical school, those things are trash. You don't have to be passionate to do well, all you need is intelligence and the right attitude.
I never wanted to be a doctor, in fact, the thought of medicine was an eleventh hour decision for. I lived all my life thinking I would be a Catholic priest, I had little or no passion for medicine. But, today... So far so good. I have done very well, I'm doing very well and will still do a whole lot.
The only thing that motivates me is the fear of becoming poor, and I can tell you that, it's big enough to make want to become a very good doctor. Because if I become a good doctor, I will make more money.
People don't know that passion and money can go hand in hand,as far as u saved a life at the end of the day.
Sir Charley I am solidly behind you

To all aspirin for medicine, I wish u success.

Medicine is not the only course on earth, many of the med students I know are depressed and hate their lives. if you have no passion for saving lives, dont go in. Na frustraion go kill u. med docs are getting 50k per montth in private hospitals in lag and they re fighting to get it. med is good, but dont go in cos of low self esteem and just to show the world u are good or to satisfy ur parents. we also have allied health courses that are ok.
Nursing is good, at least u can gedifuccck outta naija with it if u can pass ur boards. male nurses are in demand in naija too and allover da world
pharmacists are making money frm drug biz, plenty money but pharmacy hard o. hard pass medicine sef, medicine is only stressful not hard. dnt even counter, my sisters studied both so I know.
radiography is good..
see, dnt limit ursef to medicine...
naija hafff cast tey tey.

Hi medics
I scored 279 but I'm kinda confused on which school to choose between EBSU and ESUT.

I'm afraid of choosing EBSU cos I heard they are fiercely indigenous.
For Esut, I heard maths is a major part of the post utme and it's been many years since I opened any O level maths text.
Now I don't want to waste my score and I'm kinda desperate here.

I actually prefer EBSU but I don't know if it's possible for me especially with my low score.

Ishi na agbam pop corn.
I'm from Enugu State.

Cc: mandeyy , starfx
Ur score is dope, congrats on that .
But I don't think I am in the position to tell you which school to choose, because I believe medicine is the same everywhere provided the institution is accredited.
But I think u have a better shot at Esut, considering being an indigene of enugu.... (in case you decide to choose Esut) ,Maths should not be a problem, u can add me on whatsapp to give u tips on how to ace the exam with ease "I had 325/400 during my time ".

Tell your daughter nothing is impossible. It's the OAU(dubbed "Oba Awon Universities", which translates as King of Universities) she's applying to, she had better buckled up. I wish your daughter the very best. See my post above this, your daughter could apply to FUD, who knows?

Ps: MBBS(Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery) or MBChB(Medicinae Baccalaureus; Baccalaureus Chirurgiae) is a degree you get after studying Medicine and Surgery(Course of Study). Those are the variants of the degree awarded by Nigerian Universities, the former being English and the latter, Latin. OAU, OOU are examples of Universities that award the Latin variant.
Pls what is the difference between the two types of degrees u mentioned?

Forget all these Last-is-too-conc sentiments. There's nothing conc about that text. The only disadvantage about it is lack of good illustrations.

Let me share my approach with you: I was flexible. I knew the texts that had the approach I preferred in a given region. For example, I used Keith Moore for Upper, Thorax, Head and Neck, Last's for Lower, Pelvis and Perineum... Keith Moore for Abdomen too.

Your school may have recommend Last's but I'm of the opinion that Anatomy is Anatomy, as far as you are using a standard textbook....and are following your lectures closely.

Good luck.
Thanks boss.... I really appreciate.

Our first test is coming up soon..

Guys I need ur prayers.

First, I want to apologize for replying late.

Yes, it is a difficult book for beginners, I must confess...
But it's be best and most concised Anatomy textbook, in my opinion.

Yes, Chief you can achieve that...
The best way to study last anatomy is repetitions, that's what worked for me. Read it as many times as possible, and distinction would not be a problem...
There's nothing in anatomy that's not in last anatomy, so you might not be needing anyother text, save for atlas and Cunningham manuals... But if you want to combine, gray's anatomy for student is very good too.
Good luck
Thanks boss.. I really appreciate

Okay... Drop your contact, I'll reach you. But generally, combining audiovisual study aids and reading in an organised manner really helps in knowing your anatomy. Excellent Atlases like Netter's, Cunningham's and Grant's are out there, so also are several videos like Aclands and Osmosis. You can't effectively study an entity as vast yet organised as the body haphazardly. Pick a system at a time and 'lay it' cool.
This is to improve your body of knowledge(which will come in handy throughout your medical training and beyond...). But when it comes to slaying your exams, you have to be smart.. Know your lecturers and what they want, get every single class notes and pam them back to back, practice past questions, meet immediate seniors who aced such papers to help streamline your preparations. But all in all, a sound knowledge of anatomy will make all that easy and relishing.
Thanks sire... I really appreciate
