• SCAN THE MATERIAL FOR KEYWORDS BEFORE STUDYING

Before you begin to study, scan
the text for keywords.
Keywords are words that appear in a text or
written materials frequently.
You can check CITN past question to
find keywords. Scanning for keywords would
help you understand the material when you
beg into read it properly.
In the case where you don’t understand the
keywords based on the information provided in the text,
make use of the dictionary or the internet to check its meaning.

Understanding keywords help to better digest the
material and retain the information since you are familiar
with the essential words in the text.

For each of the CITN courses, list out the keys words
and get familiar with them all.
By the time you start studying intensively,
you will start coming across these keys words and
they will be automatically registered in your sub-consciousness.
You will notice how you can easily remember
those keywords when you start answering CITN past questions.

• TEACH YOURSELF BY READING THE MATERIAL OUT

Reading a material out helps you calm down
and pay attention to each word in the text.
I particularly use this method during
my undergraduate days.

We all have days where we don’t feel like studying,
we just keep postponing it and sometimes this feeling can last a whole week without studying at all.

I can’t forget my experience back then in the university,
I felt the course was easy to pass, so I just kept postponing my study time,
Before I realized it was a week to exams. I now started marathon reading,
Unfortunately, I had a carry-over (failed) in that course.

Most times, we normally do not feel like studying until there is
an immense pressure of deadlines.

By the time the deadline motivation kicks in, we realize that maybe it is too late, then, we start to panic, start studying hurriedly, skip the topics, and grasp nothing properly. Results are severely affected and there is no solid learning.

All the precious TIME and MONEY goes down the drain.
So, what must you do when you don’t feel like studying?

You checked your calendar or your phone for the date and
discovered that It’s just three months left to CIS Exams and then you said,

“OOOhhhh! time is too fast these days, abegi! I will start reading by tomorrow“.

Tomorrow comes again and you say to yourself again,

“Haaaa!!! I don’t know where the time is running to ooo, wooo!!! Let me just start by weekends.”

and this continues until exams are knocking on your front door.

It might seem funny but we are all guilty of that. You strategize
and make plans on how you will effectively study for
an exam but still you find yourself doing irrelevant things.


According to one of my students, Mercy, who
made plans on starting her exams preparations since a month ago
but still finds herself doing nothing about it as every day passes by,
she just keeps giving herself one excuses after another.

And now it’s just three months to the exams.

“My fear is that if I continue like this, I will end up not
preparing well for this exam due to my procrastinating attitude” Mercy said to me

I shared some tips with her so as to help her stay disciplined in preparing for her exams. I would like to share
some of the tips with you as well;

First, you have to get rid of temptations because
Self-discipline becomes very easy when the things or people that distract you are out of sight, out of reach.
Make sure before you start studying, your mobiles phones and every other garget are switched off or completely out of sight.
For some people that put their phones very close to them and have active internet. Immediately they get a notification sound,
the urge to reply to the message is always there. Therefore,
it is advised to put your mobile phones away when studying.
And try to get rid of every other temptation too.

Secondly, you have to stop the habit of perfect timing.
The truth be told, you do not need to wait for a perfect time to
start studying for your exams. Use the available time to study for your exams; the available time is a perfect time.
Yes, we all want that time when we will be gingered;
when our body, spirit, and mind will be synchronized to study.
Most times, the so-called ‘perfect timing’ might not show up. Probably until the exam is in a few weeks or it might not even come due to unforeseen circumstances.
Therefore, the habit of perfect timing should be stopped instead discipline yourself to read when there is available time. It pays more.

We are going to pause here for today, in my next article,
I will share with you the reason why it is important to
discipline yourself as you start preparing for your CIS exams and
give you other tips you need to achieve that.


P.S. With self–discipline most, anything is possible. Self–discipline is what separates the winners and the losers.

Just like setting your alarm, after a while, you will start to wake up at that
specific time even without the alarm.

We're not living in 1929. It's important to remember that as we watch the stock market crash and our personal net worth take a big hit.
While that has certainly happened, it's important to note that the stock market isn't the economy. We're not on the cusp of the next Great Depression. Instead, we have a market that's spooked by rising inflation (i.e. stuff costing more) that's also struggling with supply chain issues caused by an unparalleled global pandemic.

Yes, many things cost more including basic needs like food and shelter, as well as near-basic needs likes cars and gas. But, while inflation has been real, that's not the full story of the U.S. economy.

We're also living at a time where the unemployment rate (3.6%) remains near historic low (where it most likely would be if jobs weren't so plentiful allowing some people to sit out of the labor market for a period). The labor picture has for a very rare time in American history titled in favor of workers.

This has led to jobs in the retail and service space which once paid minimum wage while offering minimal benefits to offer $15 an hour or more along with perks like free college tuition. That's not to say that these jobs even pay a living wage (it depends a lot upon where you live) but the situation for workers in these spaces has notably improved.

The economy has its struggles, but it's not a clear picture. High house prices for one person means a home that has gained a lot of value for someone else. And other issues -- like the high cost of gas and the shortage of new as well as used cars -- are tied to relatively short-term problems.

But What About My Investments?
Stock markets crash. That's sometimes an indication of greater economic problems, but the U.S. stock market has never failed to recover its losses -- often in a fairly quick period. That's cold comfort as you see red in your portfolio, but if retirement (or whatever you plan to spend your invested money on) isn't now or in the next year or two, a "crash" is something expected that can be used to your advantage.

The first thing you should do is evaluate why you own the shares that you own. Has something changed about any of those companies because of the pandemic? Not has the share price gone down, but has anything changed about the company's long-term trajectory?

Short-term investors, or perhaps people who panic easily, have used Netflix's (NFLX) slight subscriber drop as a sign that the company has peaked. Do you believe that or do you see the streaming leader both returning to growth and better controlling its content costs?

Netflix had explosive growth during the pandemic. Would you have rather it added those customers at a pace that spread things out for Wall Street? Do you see people leaving the service for a rival or to start reading more?

The reality is that many high-quality companies have suffered major declines for reasons that have nothing to do with their business performance. Yes, the pandemic did create some false winner that won't be long-term successes, but that's a small number of companies (and many long-term investors avoided those companies because of that possibility.

Now Is the Time to Buy
The stock market has become a giant Marshalls filled with name brands at huge discounts. It may seem counterintuitive to buy while stocks are crashing, but isn't that the best time to buy? If your BMW dealer has too much inventory and offers a sale, that doesn't change the long-term value of owning a BMW.
And while buying can be a huge opportunity, the reality is that a market crash is not the time to sell (unless you truly believe you have a holding that's not a good long-term investment). Yes, a lot of high-fliers have fallen to earth, but that was true in 2008 as well and history has shown that holding and buying great companies when prices are low is how you get rich.

Based on research and experience, to form a study habit, try to study specific thing
at specific time on a daily basis for 21 days.

It actually sounds so easy but getting started is always the issue,
but if you are really determined to form a study habit, you will put in the effort.


These are the simple step by step process to start studying for your ATS exams;

1. TRY NOT TO DO TOO MUCH STUDYING AT A TIME.

Don’t try to study for 1 to 2 hours at a time,
If you try to do too much studying at one time,
you will get tired, bored and your studying will not be very effective.

Start by studying just one topic for 30 minutes on the first day. After the first 15 – 20 minutes you can take a short break, this will help you to restore your mental energy.

2. HAVE SPECIFIC STUDY TIME:
Have specific time for each day throughout the week for your study.
For example, 5:00am – 5:30am from Monday to Friday.
Note that the time must be the same for a week.

This will help you program your subconscious mind to be ready for study at that specific time.
Just like when you set an alarm for specific time, after some time,
you will wake up at that same time without the alarm
