The Unexpected by David Vera Sorochi

I woke up to the vibration of my phone on the table. I lazily reached for it hoping it wasn't a client as I picked the phone, I turned the brightness down to read the message that popped up

"You shall find that which your heart yearns To continue to recieve inspirational quotes press 2".

At this point I am speechless, who sends messages this early?.I ignored the text and rolled over to the cooler side of the bed trying to find sleep and as it was about to take me my phone rang jerking me awake.I felt like crying, why can't I be left alone?.Yesterday had been the most stressful day of my life, from wining a case in the court to handling two divorce cases and a land issue. I decided to ignore the call but it kept ringing, vibrating loudly and out of anger I picked the call without looking at the caller ID

" what? " I snap

" ogiwa wu what ifeoma,it is you that is what" I hear my mum bark as I facepalm.

" I know this is not how you answer your clients calls, shey its because I'm the one calling? " mum continues talking. " Goodmorning mum" I greet scratching my head in frustration. "Keep your greetings Ifeoma" she started, "your father and I want you home today, " she says in her normal sing-song voice. "aaah Mummy, you people know how busy I am, you can't call me up and expect me back na" I say looking for an excuse ,"moreover I have a Client to see today" I lie emphasizing on the word "Client". " Ifeoma Onyirinnaya Chukwuka, yes we can call you up and ask you to come home" she says and I can hear my father clearing his throat. " if you were married, we wouldn't be calling you up" she adds. "Mami, I'm just 25"I say now fully awake and wanting the call to end. "I'm sure that's what all these 30something years old ladies were saying when they were 25" she says ,and I know she rolled her eyes before continuing," Your father said you should dress nice, we'll have a visitor " and with that she drops the call on me. I lay back on the bed but it is obvious that sleep won't be possible anymore so I roll out of bed dragging the sheets with me. "Ifeoma!" I scold myself before laying the bed properly. I rushed my shower, I know my mum and if I wasn't home soon she was going to make dad drive here for 2 hours and pick me up and that's one thing I don't want happening,I brushed my teeth and washed my hair then dried it with my hand drier. I searched my closet for any cloth that will look appropriate to mum, my clothes had gently turned into black and white, even my church gowns looked too formal. I finally picked a Grey gown to wear before putting on little make up and a wig. I searched my room for my car keys untill I found it under the bed, by then my room looked like a warzone.I quickly took a look at the wall clock, 11:30 it read .The traffic was worse than I expected and I couldn't bear it with the killer headache I was having. I reduced the volume of my radio and relaxed into my seat tapping my fingers on the steering, making a nice beat as I nodded my head to the killer beat playing on the radio. It was there I first saw him, just like me, the traffic was frustrating him but he looked like a knight, he was in a clean suit and neatly trimmed beards making him look like the drop dead gorgeous guys that were on the cover of magazines, I quickly fished out my phone and stole a picture before he turned, I needed to send the picture to my friends. As I raised the phone the second time to get a clearer picture he turned and his eyes caught mine that was probably filled with adoration but his on the other hand had confusion in it, I quickly snapped my eyes back to the front as the line continued moving, I cursed myself again for being stupid but I was happy atleast I would never see him

It was 8months after my messy breakup,my family and close friends still looked out for me just in case I decided to do something stupid or try to kill myself. Researchers has it that it takes 21days for the brain to forget someone they lost but it was taking more than that plus I had just finished my NYSC and I was staying with my parents since I hadn't secured a job yet and I wasn't going out much to avoid running into Kachi so I settled to reading inspirational messages on social media which helped me a lot through the whole mess especially Facebook and It was at that time that I met Elton and we started chatting, our vibe matched so well as if we have known each other since kindergarten, we would talk deep into the night ,long meaniful conversations,he would call to check up on me. In a way in my heart he was only substituting for Kachi and a distraction from my heart break. We got to know more about each other,we knew everything about each other in just few days of so I thought.

"Omachukwu"my father called, dragging me out from my thoughts.
"Daddy!!"I rushed to hug him.
"You don't want to be like your mum do you?"he asked eyeing my mum playfully
"How? What did mum do?"I asked linking between them, surprised that I hadn't heard of this story before since they always enjoyed sharing stories about their youthful days.
"She kept me waiting at the altar and I thought she wasn't interested anymore"Dad said straightening his tux.
"In my defence" mum started "I was looking for the best powder
"In your days wasn't it only white powder you people applied?" Ada asked making us laugh.
"Yes but I didn't like Tony Montana,I wanted Stella powder"mum said defending herself.
"Don't keep your groom waiting “ dad said, minutes later on our way out he whispered in my ears,"you're the finest of them all."
I watched as the cars moved and smiled to myself, who would have thought that a small town girl like me who all she had to her name was a degree in public health was getting married to the love of her life, the son of the state governor who also happened to be one of the richest entrepreneur in the country.
As the car kept moving my thoughts went back to how I met Elton.

..Dedicated to everyone who still believes in the 4 letter word.

People believe that there is no such thing as perfect:The perfect life, perfect man, perfect woman, perfect day, perfect LOVE, well I use to believe that too until this day now I know that love can be perfect, when two imperfect people fall in love they make love perfect.
These were the thoughts going through my mind as my mum zipped my wedding dress.
"You look so beautiful Oma"she said with a teary smile.
"Thank you mum" I said as I hugged her, turning to my bridesmaids consisting of my three best friends Nkechi,Ada and Joy who were smiling and dabbing their faces gently to avoid smudging their makeup.
"Come on girls!!!,it's my wedding day not my funeral" I joked urging them to stop being cry babies.
"Its just that we never believed you would be the first to go off the market"joy who was the talkative amongst us said.
"Duh!! Whatever"I replied with an eye roll, turning to look myself over once again in the mirror I recalled how I met the love of my life.
****
I was just getting over a breakup with my boyfriend of 3 and half years Kachi. We had woken up on a Sunday morning after a long night of love making and heart talks on marriage and kids and has even gone as far as choosing names for our kids only for him to go into the restroom and come out with a look of pity and guilt to announce that he was getting married the next weekend . How can I forget the ugly experience in a hurry ‍♂ I remember rushing into the kitchen to get a knife and threatening to stab him if he didn't leave my house that minute.

“Open your eyes “he said using his fingers trying to tug my eyes open. “look up nah!!,he exclaimed with a hint of frustration in his tone. “If I look up the airplane will fall on me” I replied remembering what Dada had told me yesterday as the cause of why the airplane in the movie crashed, “too many people were watching it “she had said with eyes glued to the small television.
“Me that has been looking at it has it crashed? “he asked still trying to get my eyes open.

“Ikenna leave your small sister alone “my mothers voice rang from the balcony but Ikenna wouldn’t let go, he kept tugging at my face and in my attempt to fight his hands off I pushed him hard causing him to stumble away from me.I still had my eyes closed when I heard the first scream and then more screams followed.

“Had the plane crashed?”,
”had Ikenna been up to more mischief?”
,”had Ma fallen from the balcony?”. ~Oh no!!,mum had been telling dad to get someone to build up the wall but he had been procrastinating, something he is very good at.
The screams grew louder and soon heavy footsteps complemented them. In fear I opened my eyes and beheld a blood chilling sight, my 10year old brother Ikenna, pinned to a tree with a thick branch pierced through his chest. I froze in shock, my legs went numb and my heart raced with fear.
“Ifeyinwa igaghi egbu m oohh”(Ifeyinwa you won’t kill me oohh)my mum screamed in igbo.
