Those who agreed to go must surely have some plausible deniability clause in their contract. Also, many of the French guys in Ukraine are members of the French Foreign Legion, so are easily deniable as they cannot be classified as regular troops.

Also, if you remember, in January, Russia claimed to have killed 60 French soldiers in a strike on Kharkiv. France came out to say it was Russian disinformation and that France has no soldiers in Ukraine. Russia released some names, only for France to double-down and say the guys were not French soldiers but people with French nationality serving in the Ukrainian military, and that Russia only got the names through a leak.
