Peter Obi Must Avoid Atiku’s ADC Coalition Trap

The recent ADC coalition involving Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar has sparked debate about its potential to unseat President Tinubu. While some see it as a necessary alliance, I’m skeptical. Obi’s mass movement of aggrieved Nigerians, evident in the 2023 election, is a powerful force, yet political pundits claim it’s not enough without a coalition. I disagree.

Atiku’s history suggests he won’t offer Obi a fair shot at the primary. The coalition feels like a calculated move to leverage Obi’s popularity while sidelining him at the last minute. His allies, driven by entrenched interests, may orchestrate a betrayal, as seen in past primaries. And the recent threat from ADC spokesperson saying If Obi leaves his political career might come to an end is enough evidence to expose their background plottings.

Obi must act fast. He escaped a similar trap in 2023 by joining the Labour Party, which remains his best path to the presidency. He should consolidate his base through grassroots mobilization and resolve internal party disputes. His media team must amplify narratives of unfair treatment in ADC to rally public sympathy, as this could boost his candidacy.
The Labour Party, not the ADC, is Obi’s strongest vehicle. He must avoid Atiku’s trap and act now to secure his place in 2027.

I used to think that in 2027, Tinubu, Atiku and Obi would all run again to see who would be the ultimate choice. However, it doesn't seem it will be that easy. Unfortunately, Nigeria is not yet at the point of conducting credible elections, and only a formidable coalition can prevent the ruling party from hijacking the electoral process

Ultimately, for the coalition to survive, either Obi or Atiku, must step down and back the other. There's no point Obi and Atiku running individually only for APC to be the beneficiary.

Some time next year, Obi and Atiku must gauge the political temperature and decide who between them has the best chance of beating APC. The one with the least chance should step down and back the other
