It's probably no news that Okeke female hostel of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka got razed by fire last night...According to an eye-witness, the fire started as a result of a spark from the wire when the school generator supplied power to the hostel. Read how a student narrated the incidence and see more photos from the incidence below Most painful is that men of the fire service who came around were incapacitated as they had no water. Even the director of works could not do anything. Lack of water in both the hostel and the neighbouring outing ones made even students who came to rescue the situation handicapped. Finally, men of the fire service returned after the whole of 300 series which is a total of 34 rooms had perished, thereby rendering 136 or more students homeless and useless as all their documents, property, and even possibly, compulsory laptops for which some are yet to pay up, have all gone up in ashes. A student who is an honourable member of the House of Representatives said she has written so many times about the connections to the appropriate quarters without any response. There is no functional fire service in the whole University town of Nsukka. The wild fire which is akin to what I watch in American horror movies could have been controlled if the works department of the school is well equipped. I would want to believe that the university administration will adequately compensate the victims; some of who are already enjoying their xmas holiday. In just a year, 3 female hostels in UNN had had fire accident. First it was Okpara hostel, then Aja-Nwachukwu and now Okeke. Source: http://www.latestamebonaija.com/2015/12/more-photos-from-yesterdays-incidence.html Cc; lalasticlala

The inaugural Global Goodwill Ambassador of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM, an alliance of midwives associations from over 100 countries of the world), H. E. Mrs Toyin Saraki has taken empowerment, through skills training, mentoring and incentives, to practicing and student midwives in Kwara, north-central Nigeria. Mrs Saraki met these midwives, as well as community mobilizers and women leaders, at the Civil Service Clinic, Ilorin. At this meeting, she expressed joy and satisfaction with the quality of the Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (EmONC) skills training which the Wellbeing Foundation Africa and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is implementing across three LGAs of Kwara State, with funding from Johnson & Johnson (JnJ). She also shared complimentary products from Unilever Nigeria, including body lotions, bath soaps and deodorant anti-perspirants. Speaking, Mrs Saraki, who is Founder-President of WBFA, said: "It brings me great pleasure to see the satisfaction on the faces of you midwives, and I'm sure that the EmONC skills you've garnered in this period of time will help save the lives of more mothers and newborns across North-Central Nigeria". The midwives applauded the work of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, over the many years, and especially highlighted the inclusion on the EmONC Skills Labs, as part of the EmONC project. The training-of-trainer (ToT) modules of the project will ensure a sustainability of skills transfer, for both in-service and pre-service midwives, as WBFA, LSTM and JnJ work towards a State-wide scale-up of the EmONC project, in the years ahead. Tragedy struck on Sunday on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway after a pregnant woman died in a car accident which happened at the Ikeja Along bus stop. The deceased’s husband, identified as Femi Ajayi, and their five-year-old daughter, Darasimi Ajayi, were said to have sustained injuries in the crash which occurred around 10pm. PUNCH Metro learnt that Femi was in a Nissan Pathfinder with his family inward Oshodi when a CRV car rammed into his vehicle and made him lose control. While the driver of the CRV sped off, the family’s car was said to have skidded off the road and rammed into a 48-seater Tata bus on the other side of the road. Our correspondent learnt that the pregnant woman, whose name had yet to be ascertained, died on the spot and her corpse was taken to the morgue in the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. An eyewitness, Yusuf Tiamiyu, said the accident was caused by the CRV driver, whom he said was driving on top speed. Tiamiyu, who is a commercial driver, added that people were reluctant to assist the victims for fear of being implicated by the police. He said, “The CRV driver was speeding. He did not stop after hitting the jeep, which lost control and somersaulted to the other side of the road where a Tata bus was. The whole thing happened very fast and the woman died instantly. “Everybody was afraid to assist them until emergency agencies came. What really pained me is the death of the woman because she was pregnant.” Another eyewitness, Olaitan Aderemi, said the woman hit her head against the dashboard adding that her husband and the daughter escaped with minor injuries. “The woman was sitting on the front seat while the child was at the back. I have a feeling that she did not use the seat belt because she hit her head against the dashboard. Her daughter and husband only sustained minor injuries,” he said. The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Michael Akindele, said policemen from the state traffic division and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps also responded to the incident. Akindele said, “An alert was received by the agency at about 10.30pm that a Nissan Pathfinder with number plate, KSF 876 DQ, skidded off its normal route and collided with a Tata bus marked, Lagos AKD 21 XC, on the other side of the road. “Unfortunately a young woman died instantly while the husband and their five-year-old girl survived with minor injuries and were moved to LASUTH for treatment.” The FRSC Ikeja Unit Commander, Mr. Wale Odekunle, equally confirmed the incident saying “the pregnant woman died instantly.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/pregnant-woman-dies-daughter-injured-in-car-crash/ lalasticlala, mynd44
