Politics / People Now Mock Me For Trekking From Gombe To Abuja For Buhari by sulsak(m): 8:09am On Nov 16, 2020
Dahiru Buba, 50, who trekked from Gombe to Abuja in support of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in 2015, tells CHIMA AZUBUIKE how the physical exertion has affected his health for three years, his expectations of the Buhari regime, among other issues

What do you do for a living?
I’m currently unemployed; I have not had any source of livelihood for some time now. I have two wives and seven children
Are you a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress?
Yes, I’m a card-carrying member of the APC in Gombe State. I duly registered at the ward level in Dukku.
What is your relationship with Buhari?
The only relationship I have with him is the love I have for the APC, Buhari’s personality as a man of integrity and as a lover of the masses.
Why did you choose to trek to Abuja from Gombe for Buhari?
The idea came out of my excitement after the APC won the presidential election in 2015. It was because my party and my choice candidate, President Buhari, became the democratically elected leader of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This came after he had tried a number of times. When it was taking forever for him to become the President, I promised myself to do something big, not knowing he would win. So I vowed that if Buhari got elected, I would do something extraordinary. The best way was to trek.
How many days did the journey take you?
It took me roughly 15 days.
What type of footwear did you use to trek?
I used three slippers during the trip. I changed my slippers three times.
Who monitored you to be sure you did not use a form of transportation at some point?
I didn’t enter any vehicle. In fact, some people stopped to ask me what was going on and when I told them about my decision to trek, they wished me luck. Some others even offered to give me a ride but I declined. I’m always sincere in my belief or in whatever course I choose to course. Taking a ride would have eroded the genuineness of my plan and record so I refused to allow any car take me to my destination. When I got to my destination on foot, my legs were swollen.
What were the obstacles you faced on your way?
When I got to Kila village as I took the Kano road, I asked for shelter but people refused to give me shelter. Normally, I got assistance everywhere I got to but when I got Kila, it was different. Maybe the people there thought I had an evil plan.
In a picture of you that is online, you were holding a commendation certificate. What else did you get for the unusual feat?
I only got transport fare back home from Abuja. Although I expected much more but I was only given transportation fare, nothing more. Many well-wishers didn’t believe it when I told them that I didn’t get any money. Everyone that heard about my journey thought I returned home with huge money. But the truth is that only N10,000 was given to me.
What have you, your family or Dukku community gained from the trip?
Everyone was just happy that I returned home safely because some people from Kuma, who also trekked were murdered around Jos. When I trekked, I was hoping to be rewarded but when I saw that there was no reward, I decided to go to radio stations to seek assistance.
Who diagnosed your condition and told you that you have problems with your limbs?
First, I was going from one clinic to another, wasting the little resources that came my way until I was checked at Government House clinic, where they referred me to a private facility where I would be properly examined.
How did you know it was caused by the trekking?
I knew it was caused by the trekking because I never had that problem until that exercise. Of course I knew my body system before the trekking and I know how it has been after the trekking. I can tell when a particular part of my body begins to malfunction.
What is the problem and how long have you had it?
I’ve had it for over three years now. It started like a joke; it started with some reactions around my toes and they gradually moved to my knees. I started having pain in my legs.
How much do you need to get treatment?
I don’t know the exact figure but as it has to do with my legs, it requires good treatment. I just wish to be fine.
What do you think about the Buhari regime that you trekked for from Gombe to Abuja?
I feel very sad because some people mock me now, saying I only did that in order to be rich but I’m still poor while others enjoy insulting the President in my presence. But I’m usually helpless because I can’t really defend him.

People always harass me in Dukku, asking me what I have gained, especially those who know about my current medical predicament and financial condition. They know how I practically survive by depending on others. Some of my friends, in an attempt to ridicule what I did, said I should have trekked to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. They said trekking to Mecca would have been more beneficial. They said my trekking from Gombe to Abuja did not bring me any gain.
If you could relive the period that you trekked, what would you do differently?
Well, if I could, I would still trek for the President
Do you regret your loyalty to this regime?
I don’t regret my loyalty at all; no way. It was something I did wholeheartedly. Nobody coerced me or urged me to do it. I don’t regret my loyalty to the party and the President.
Do you think you have become richer or poorer since Buhari became the President?
I’m poorer than ever.
What do you think can be done to improve the country?
The President should revisit the promises he made to the people and fulfil them. The government is trying its best; I’m happy with some things but there are some things that need to change. Their tenure isn’t over yet.
Finally you got medical attention, how does that make you feel?
I’m grateful to the state government for helping me. The Governor of Gombe State; Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, is taking care of medical bill. I was at the Government House clinic and later transferred to a private hospital in the state capital where I’m expected to undergo treatment. Already, I have done some tests and X-ray. They have prescribed some drugs for me and I have been asked to report back within five days.
I want to also call on the government to please buy me a house because the house I stay in Dukku LGA is not mine. This is a way for the government to intervene and make people making fun of me to shut up. People have been taunting me for trekking without getting a worthy reward.

Sports / 'messi Has Completed Football -winks Honoured To Play Alongside Greatest Ever by sulsak(m): 7:50pm On Oct 04, 2018
The 22-year-old praised the five-time Ballon d'Or winner after the Blaugrana eased past Spurs at Wembley
Harry Winks hailed Lionel Messi as the ‘greatest ever’ after Barcelona dashed Tottenham’s Champions League hopes in Wednesday’s 4-2 win at Wembley.
Messi scored two and made two as Mauricio Pochettino’s team failed to recover from defeat in Milan two weeks ago, falling six points behind the top two in the race to qualify from Group B, and Winks believes his side were ultimately undone by the ‘exceptional’ Argentinean.
Spurs fell 2-0 behind inside the first half at Wembley before Harry Kane halved the arrears shortly after half time, only for Messi to restore Barca’s advantage with a close-range finish. Erik Lamela pulled one back for Tottenham before Messi added a fourth in the final minute.

Winks, who was starting in his first Champions League game of the season, played the full 90 minutes as he continues his rehabilitation from the ankle injury which kept him out of last season’s run-in, and afterwards spoke of his pride at having shared a pitch with the five-time Balon d’Or winner.
“I did enjoy it,” he told the Evening Standard. “To play against him was an honour. The result takes away a lot of the enjoyment from the game, but in years to come, when I look back and say I played against — in my opinion — the greatest player to ever play football, it will be a proud moment.
“It’s so difficult to reflect on that right now because we’ve lost and, ultimately, that’s the most important thing. I’m gutted.
“The only way I can really describe [facing him] is he’s just completed football. The man just knows where everybody is. His weight of pass is just exceptional. He’s just special. But everyone who has played against him has said the same thing for years.”
Winks made five Champions League appearances for Spurs last season on their run to the last-16 where they were eliminated by Juventus, and the 22-year-old England international, who broke into the first team at White Hart Lane in 2016, has relished the opportunity to learn from Europe’s finest as Tottenham seek to establish themselves as a regular presence on the continent.
"For me, it was special to play against a player like that. I learnt a lot from it. I’ll watch the game back and I’ll dissect my game. There were times when I gave the ball away sloppily, which wasn’t good enough.”

Sports / Neymar's Showboating Branded 'annoying' And 'sneaky' By PSG Team-mate Meunier by sulsak(m): 5:46pm On Sep 30, 2018
A club colleague of the Brazilian has sympathy with defenders facing his flicks and tricks, but believes his style benefits the Ligue 1 champions
Neymar irritates opponents with his style of play, according to Thomas Meunier, but the Paris Saint-Germain defender does not want him to change.
The Brazil superstar scored from the penalty spot as the Ligue 1 champions eased past Reims 4-1 on Wednesday.
Right-back Meunier, who continued his own fine run in front of goal with a third in as many matches, has every sympathy for defenders charged with thwarting Neymar.

"He is a frustrating player for opponents. He can stop suddenly with the ball and it makes it too much sometimes," the Belgium international told reporters.
"It's quite annoying, I can understand it. Also, it's an advantage for us.
"Two or three players have been booked because of him. Then they have to control themselves and Ney can benefit from that.
"He knows how to be a bit sneaky. It's good for us and he does it really well."
PSG will put their 100 per cent record in Ligue 1 on the line again when they travel to Nice on Saturday.

Health / Health Experts To Set 'safe Time Limits' For Children Using Social Media by sulsak(m): 9:37am On Sep 30, 2018
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has asked the UK's chief medical officer, Dame Sally Davies, to start preparing official guidance on safe time limits, like those on recommended maximum alcohol consumption for adults. In an interview with the Observer before the Conservative party conference , Mr Hancock said he was "very worried" as a father of three children by the growing evidence of the detrimental effect on the health of young people. He told the paper: "Unrestricted use (of social media) by younger children risks being very damaging to their mental health. "So I have asked the chief medical officer to bring forward formal guidance on its use by children." He added: "As a parent you want to be able to say, 'the rules say you shouldn't use social media for more than a certain period of time'. "This is why we have a chief medical officer: to set a norm in society, make judgements on behalf of society, so that individual schools or individual parents don't have to decide." Some social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, have moved to mitigate fears of addiction by introducing tools that enable users to monitor and restrict their time on the services. But Mr Hancock hit out at both platforms over a lack of policing of their rules on age limits. "The terms of reference of Facebook and Instagram say you shouldn't be on it if you are under the age of 13. But they do nothing to police that," he told the Observer. "The guidelines for WhatsApp say you shouldn't be on it unless you're 16. But again, they don't lift a finger." Public campaigns such as Scroll Free September have also been launched to encourage people to use social media less.

Crime / Journalist Sentenced For Making Child Sex Abuse Images by sulsak(m): 8:55am On Jul 25, 2017
A BBC journalist who was caught with 26 videos and nine images of child abuse on his home computer has been given a suspended sentence .
The journalist, Lloyd Watson from Gateshead admitted three charges of making indecent images .
One of the videos showed abuse involving a young girl who was in obvious distress, the BBC reported on its website .
The 33- year- old worked for the BBC News website in Newcastle but has now been dismissed.
Newcastle Crown Court heard Watson had trawled the dark web to obtain his material until his home computer was seized by police in March 2016, the Independent UK reported .
Photographs and videos were found from all three categories used by the courts to classify the gravity the child sex abuse images , including the most severe classification that includes rape, bestiality and sadism .
It was reported that in a document entitled “ confessions text” found on his computer , Watson wrote that he had done nothing wrong and that it was the people who had made such images who should be held accountable.
The court heard he had no previous convictions and was seeking professional help for his behaviour .
Sentencing him to nine months in prison – suspended for two years – Judge Amanda Rippon told Watson he was complicit in the abuse of children by viewing the images .
Watson was placed on the sex offenders ’ register for ten years and given a sexual harm prevention order .
In a statement , the BBC said: “ He will no longer be working for the BBC . His crimes were entirely unrelated to his work for us. ”
