Policeman Reportedly Kills Motorcyclist In Jigawa
A commercial motorcyclist has been reportedly killed by a police officer for violating traffic rules in Jigawa State, north-west Nigeria.
According to the Chairman of Motorcyclist Association in Dutse, Mr Adamu Idris, Mr Yunusa Isma’il aged 35 was killed on Monday in the state capital.
He told reporters on Friday that the victim was hit with a stick by the security officer at the Ibrahim Aliyu Bypass Road after he was said to have driven his motorcycle against the traffic.
Idris added that the incident prompted a violent protest which resulted in the vandalisation of the police officer’s personal vehicle.
He, however, said the officer fled the scene after other motorcyclists trooped to the area.
The police authorities in the state also confirmed the incident.
Mr Abdu Jinjiri, the Public Relations Officer in Jigawa, told Channels Television that the police officers who were on duty at the spot reported the incident but denied claims that the motorcyclist was hit.

He said on spotting police vehicle, late Isma’il attempted to turn but in the process, he fell and hurt his head.

The Police Command’s spokesman explained that the security officials rushed him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
He added that an angry mob attacked the police vehicle and other officers who were on duty.
Jinjiri noted that the case, because of the controversy surrounding it, has been transferred to the Police Headquarters in Abuja where a thorough investigation would be carried out by the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID).

BAGHDAD, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 31 Shiite pilgrims were killed and some 100 others were wounded on Tuesday in a stampede in the holy Shiite city of Karbala in south of Baghdad, Iraq's Health Ministry said.
The incident took place in the afternoon during the major Shiite ritual of Ashura when thousands of Shiite pilgrims pushed into the entrance of the Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala, some 110 km south of Baghdad.
"The death toll rose to 31 people and some 100 others were wounded in the stampede in Karbala and 10 of the wounded are in critical condition," Sayf al-Badr, the ministry's spokesman, said in a statement, citing latest reports.
The Shiite community commemorates Ashura, which marks the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Mohammed, who was killed and buried in 680 A.D. in Karbala.
During the past 10 days, up to 4 million Shiite pilgrims arrived in Karbala from other Iraqi provinces and outside Iraq to perform the major ritual of Ashura, according to figures announced by the al-Furat al-Awsat Operations Command.
Iraqi televisions aired live footage showing that the streets of Karbala were clearly overcrowded by a large number of black-clad pilgrims, including men, women and children, who waved green, black and red flags while marching on the streets.
Some pilgrims beat their chests and heads, or even performing self-flagellation with chains and blades, in honor of Imam Hussein who was killed in the battle of Karbala in the seventh century.
The stampede occurred during the Tuwayrij Run, which is part of the major Ashura ritual, as a large crowd of Shiite pilgrims were running while beating their chests and heads from the Tuwayrij area towards the Imam Hussein shrine to express their sadness and sorrow for the death of Imam Hussein.
Tuesday is the climax of the ritual of Ashura, which means "10" in Arabic, as the killing of Imam Hussein took place on the 10th day of Muharam, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar.

Images circulated on social media showed a plume of smoke rising near the building of U.S. embassy in the exclusion zone of Kabul, where several other embassies are also located.
The blast was caused by a rocket attack, a local reporter Jawad Jalali said.
Alarm was sounded by U.S. embassy after the explosion and can be heard in surrounding areas.
There is no official report of casualty yet, but casualties are feared. No government officials can be reached for more details. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Following the recent murder of Pius Abiaziem, a Nigerian businessman in South Africa, four police officers linked to the murder have been arrested.

This was disclosed on Friday in a statement signed by media assistant, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Gabriel Odu.

In reaction to the arrest, the Chairman and CEO, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa urged the South African Police to expedite action on the matter.

Dabiri also called for speed in the trial of the four policemen and others arrested for various offenses committed against Nigerians living in South Africa

It could be recalled that Abiaziem was killed in Eastern Cape last week allegedly by four South African Policemen who were interrogating him in his house.

An Agro-Economist, Dr Victor Iyama, says Nigeria can generate foreign exchange by producing Indian hemp which abounds in the country for the international market rather than destroying large farms of the herb.

Iyama told members of the Food and Agriculture Writers Organisation of Nigeria (FAWON) at a stakeholder meeting in Lagos that processing hemp oil was capable of generating huge forex.

Iyama, who is also the National President of the Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associations of Nigeria (FACAN), said that Nigeria had failed to harness all the wealth that was available. “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) goes about destroying hemp farms and they are happy, a country that has no dollar goes about every day destroying dollars and you say you are working, which work? “When we can easily take only three months to grown hemp. A litre of hemp oil is sold for 12,000 dollars, a litre of your fuel is N145 or 200 which is about a dollar. “We have hemp in abundance here, just three months and dollars are real. All we need is adequate regulation of the production process,’’ he said. Iyama noted that nothing stops NDLEA from being posted to these farms where the processing machines would be put up and then monitor it. “If you see anybody taking it out of that place, arrest him, we do things in this country by starting to run without crawling and without walking. “Everybody is shouting China today, did China get to this place by starting from the top? No, you have to be able to face the reality, this country is blessed, in fact over blessed.
