Uber is making its first foray into the marijuana market, as Uber Eats users in Ontario, Canada will soon be able to order cannabis products on the app. Customers will be able to place orders in a dedicated section of the app for cannabis retailer Tokyo Smoke and then pick them up at a nearby store. The firm refused to be drawn on whether it will roll out the offering further across Canada and the US. Canada's marijuana market is worth around CAD$5bn (£3bn; $4bn) a year. Uber Eats users will have to verify their age on the app and then will be able to pick up their orders within an hour, the company said. Under Canadian law, although marijuana use has been legal since 2018, it is still illegal to deliver it. Uber has had its sights set on the booming cannabis market for some time now. In April, chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said the company will consider delivering cannabis once it is permitted under US law. Illegal producers Despite the sale of cannabis for recreational use becoming legal in Canada three years ago, illegal producers still control a large share of sales. This is something the government has been trying to remedy. Uber said that its partnership with Tokyo Smoke will help adults in the country buy safe, legal cannabis, combatting illegal sellers. Canada's cannabis market is forecast to continue expanding in the coming years with industry research firm BDS Analytics expecting sales to grow to $6.7bn by 2026. "We will continue to watch regulations and opportunities closely market by market. And as local and federal laws evolve, we will explore opportunities with merchants who operate in other regions," an Uber spokesperson said. Demand for cannabis products grew significantly last year as people were were stuck at home during lockdowns. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59342016 |
Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has dismissed the report of the Lagos state panel that investigated the #EndSARS massacre as fake news. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, he said the report submitted to Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a rehash of already circulating fake news. Mohammed maintained that instead of sitting for one year, the panel should have just compiled social media reports and wound up. The minister alleged that the report is ridden with discrepancies, innuendos, inconsistency and errors. He wondered what the panel meant by its conclusion of “massacre in context,” declaring that it can only be a “phantom massacre.” The minister remarked that the report did not make any recommendations for innocent victims killed in Lagos, saying that it cannot be relied upon. https://tribuneonlineng.com/just-in-lai-mohammed-dismisses-lagos-endsars-report-as-fake-news/ |

resident Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he has kept himself free of corrupt acquisitions, hence no one can accuse him of corruption. Mr Buhari made this assertion at a town hall meeting with leaders of the South-East region in Imo. The president made the claim despite reports of corruption by his aides and close associates, who remain unconvicted. The president also touched on other issues pertinent to the Igbos. Read the full statement here: I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED AS A PRESIDENT WHO STABILISED NIGERIA, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS SOUTH EAST LEADERS President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Owerri said that he would want to be remembered as the President who stabilised Nigeria in the area of security, economic prosperity and triumph over corruption. The President, who spoke at a town hall meeting with South East leaders during his one-day official visit to Imo State, said with less than two years left in his eight-year tenure as President, security still remains a major priority for his administration. ‘‘If there is no security, there is nothing anyone can do no matter how much you try or the initiative you have. ‘‘Security is number one priority and then the economy. When people feel secure they will mind their own business,’’ he said. The President told South-East leaders that while fighting corruption in Nigeria had become very sophisticated and difficult, he would continue to strive to leave a lasting legacy of integrity and accountability in the system. ‘‘Nobody can accuse me of having companies or mansions anywhere in the country and I thank God that I try to keep myself as clean as possible, so that I cannot be taken hostage. ‘‘I will do my best to ensure that Nigerians that try hard, succeed in their efforts,’’ he said. On the forthcoming 2023 elections, the President reaffirmed his commitment to free, fair and credible polls, urging the leaders to honestly educate their constituencies on the need to hold their elected representatives accountable. Acknowledging the resourcefulness and enterprising spirit of Igbo people, the President said: ‘‘The fundamental thing about the Igbo people is that there is no town you will visit in Nigeria without seeing the Igbos being in-charge of either infrastructure or pharmaceutical industry. ‘‘Therefore, it is unthinkable for me that any Igbo man would consider himself not to be a part of Nigeria. ‘‘The evidence is there for everyone to see that Igbos are in charge of Nigeria’s economy.’’ Noting that no country can make any meaningful progress without the development of infrastructure, the President expressed regret that successive governments at the Federal level contributed to the decay of critical infrastructure in the country. He promised that the Federal Government would complete ongoing key projects in the South East, including the 2nd Niger Bridge as well as the railway lines and routes linking the region with other parts of the country. ‘‘I firmly believe that when you get infrastructure right, Nigerians will mind their own businesses,’’ he said, adding that as a group, the Igbos stand to benefit more from the ongoing development of infrastructure in the country because ‘‘they are more enterprising.’’ President Buhari had earlier commissioned four projects executed by Governor Hope Uzodinma, including the Naze/Ihiagwa/Nekede/Obinze link road, the Balloon Driven/Flood Control drainage at Dick Tiger Road, the Egbeada Bypass road and the New Exco-Chambers, Government House, Owerri. Addressing Imo residents at the commissioning of Egbeada bypass named after a prominent son of the State, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President said he was very impressed with the level of work done by the State government. ‘‘I am very pleased with what I have seen and I assure you that I will support Imo State within the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ he said. In his remarks at the town hall meeting, Governor Uzodinma said Ndigbo believe in a united Nigeria predicated on ‘‘justice, equity and fairness.’’ He thanked the President for addressing the interests of Ndi Igbo through deliberate policy initiatives designed to give the people a true sense of belonging, including the ongoing construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge, among others. Governor Uzodinma said the people of South East would remain grateful to the President for approving the establishment of a Naval Base in Oguta Local Government Area of the State, adding that as time unfolds, the economic benefits of the base would manifest. The Governor also commended the President for strongly supporting the appointment of two prominent Igbos into two key international organisations-Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Assistant Director-General of Health Emergency Intelligence, World Health Organisation (WHO). In his remarks, the President-General, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof. George Obiozor assured the President of the continuous support of Ndigbo. ‘‘Ndigbo are committed to Nigerian unity and there is news for those trying to push us out of Nigeria. ‘‘Ndigbo in Nigeria are like fish in the ocean and no matter how rough the storm is, it cannot drive the fish out of the ocean. ‘‘Mr President, it is in this context, that we see a new dawn in your distinguished presence in Igbo land and believe that on your return to Abuja the significance and substance of this visit will form new foundation of a platform for meaningful dialogue on critical issues of concern to the Igbo nation,’’ he said. A giant oil refinery complex being built in Nigeria by a company owned by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person, will cost more than double the amount originally projected. “Our capex will almost go to $19bn by the time we finish,” Devakumar Edwin, group executive director of Dangote Industries, said in an interview broadcast on Arise News on August 31. The facility near Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, was expected to cost $9bn eight years ago, a price tag that had climbed to $15bn by 2019. The 650,000 barrel-a-day refinery is part of a vast petrochemical project that will also house the world’s biggest ammonia plant. Once operational, the facility is intended to curb, or even end, the nation’s dependence on fuel imports — a source of embarrassment for the government of Africa’s largest crude producer. The refinery will be able to supply all the petrol, diesel and aviation fuel used in the West African country, and a third of its output will still be available for export, Dangote told the Lagos-based television station. Originally set for completion in 2016, the project is now expected to be commissioned in 2022. State-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which is buying a 20% stake in the complex for $2.7bn, will pay a third of the purchase price in cash, Dangote said. Another third will be covered by supplying crude to the refinery, and the remainder “will be paid from the profit they are going to make from the business”, he said. The NNPC said in June that the African Export-Import Bank is raising up to $1bn to help it finance the acquisition. https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/companies/energy/2021-09-01-dangote-refinery-construction-costs-more-than-double-in-nigeria/ |

Paul Okoye, widely known as Rudeboy has sent a stern warning to Nigerians to mind their business. In an exclusive interview with media personality, Do2tun, Paul stated that it is disturbing seeing people say whatever they want about his family. According to him, his family problem is nobody’s business and the Okoye family deserves peace. He said people have refused to let him breathe after the news hit the net. Speaking on the negative comments surrounding his marriage, he confessed that nasty comments and advice from clueless people were annoying. He made it clear that they should back off and let him deal with his family issues in peace. Though he didn’t confirm the divorce or when it will be finalized, Rudeboy said they are adults who are capable of making their own decisions. He also revealed that he is a family man and he would have preferred if someone -Anita- had zipped up about their private affairs. “Like I always tell people, it is so unfortunate that family problem which I think is nobody’s business to know, but it’s so unfortunate that Psquare has to pay the price for it. One thing I promise myself not to do, let the Okoye family just have the peace that I think they are having now. I hate waking up anytime and just see people saying things you know, whatever happened is just a thing of choice and one thing you need to do is to try and respect people that wake up one day and say they don’t want to do anymore, okay. I am a family man and sometimes when I see issues and it goes to the media, I will be like I wish one person can just zip it. Do you know why? People will get tired but you see when you talk, you know. So, for me, it’s like I think we’ve rested for more and we are the highest, even ‘Boys II men no reach that level.” https://tooxclusive.com/rudeboy-warns-nigerians-to-mind-their-business-amid-his-divorce/ |

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Wednesday, explained why Simon Ekpa may no longer continue as a broadcaster on Radio Biafra. IPOB disclosed that Ekpa has refused to follow laid down rules of operation in Radio Biafra, hence the need to discontinue with his services. Ekpa was engaged as one of the broadcasters on Radio Biafra, shortly after the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB. However, the group said Ekpa’s services may no longer be needed because he has refused to sign the rules of engagement and code of conduct guiding those broadcasting on Radio Biafra. A statement by Emma Powerful, reads: “The global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has observed with regrets, that Mazi Simon Ekpa whom our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu gave an appointment and duty to start broadcasting on Radio Biafra doesn’t want to follow the laid down rules of operation in Radio Biafra. Our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu gave the directive while in detention but Mazi Simon Ekpa has refused to follow the principles. “Mazi Simon Ekpa has refused to sign the rules of engagement and code of conduct guiding those broadcasting on Radio Biafra. We don’t understand why Mazi Ekpa would not like to follow the steps of other broadcasters on the platform who have since done the needful. “IPOB is a big movement, and cannot just change the rules because of one individual as this may set a bad precedence. Mazi Simon Ekpa is hardworking Biafran whose immense contributions towards the restoration of Biafra are highly appreciated, but for not signing the code of conduct as a broadcaster on Radio Biafra, he may not continue to have the opportunity of broadcating via the platform. “This decision was not intended to ridicule or undermine anyone but to prove to all that due process cannot be compromised in IPOB. IPOB is a well structured movement where activities of members are regulated with well-thoughtout rules. No one should act in a way that suggests that the laws are meant for certain group of people. “While Mazi Simon Ekpa has the right to make his broadcasts on Facebook and other platforms of his choice, he may no longer broadcast on Radio Biafra as one of the official broadcasters.” IPOB clarifies alleged appointment of Simon Ekpa as Nnamdi Kanu’s successor https://dailypost.ng/2021/07/21/nnamdi-kanu-ipob-sacks-simon-ekpa-as-radio-biafra-broadcaster-gives-reasons/ |

The founder of One Love Family, Sat Guru Maharaj Ji, has said Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Igboho cannot be compared to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. Maharaji Ji said unlike Igboho, the IPOB leader was directing people to fight. He accused the IPOB leader of using his platform, Radio Biafra, to cajole his followers into fighting. Maharaji Ji said the Yoruba freedom fighter stopped the killing in Ibarapa area of Oyo State. “Everybody has right to present themselves, you can’t compare Ighoho with Nnamdi Kanu who has a radio station telling the people to fight and fight, even though we can’t be sure it is the Kanu’s boys who go about burning down police stations everywhere for any reason or so ever. “Sunday Igboho stopped the Killings going on in Ibarapa; that was how he won my love. I supported him in that area, he stopped those doing evil,” he told SaharaReporters. Kanu was recently rearrested by the Nigerian government and repatriated to Nigeria. The IPOB leader is believed to have been apprehended in Kenya, though the Nigerian government is silent on where he was nabbed. However, the Department of State Services, DSS, had recently invaded Igboho’s residence but he escaped arrest. Both secessionists are currently leading the vanguard for the Oduduwa Republic and Biafra. Guru Maharaj Ji tasks Buhari on speedy completion of pending corruption cases https://dailypost.ng/2021/07/08/biafra-oduduwa-why-nnamdi-kanu-cant-be-compared-to-sunday-igboho-guru-maharaji-ji/ |
