BUHARI'S BROUHAHA: NIGERIA AND THE POST JONATHAN ADMINISTRATION. A new dispensation was birthed on May 29th,2015 when General Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as the fourth democratic president and commander-in-chief of the Nigeria armed forces. Nigerians both home and diaspora were expecting good governance promised by the Buhari Administration- especially in the areas of economy and security. Under the previous administration, Nigeria was rated as the largest economy in Africa and the 23rd in the world by the World Bank and the IMF, with a GDP well above US $570 billion; The Nigerian customs raked in #970 billion in revenue in 2014- the highest in the history of Nigeria. The country's gas supply market grew from 300 million to two billion cubic feet per day (cfpd) just as proceeds from Nigeria's non-oil exports rose to 2.97billion by the end of 2013. Nigerian also became Africa's number one destination of foreign investors. In the first month of 2014, a total of US $9.70 billion flowed in to the national economy as foreign direct investment. However, the emergence of President Buhari has been detrimental to the Nigeria economy. Recently, the world bank noted that Nigeria's economy under Buhari is worse than 10 years ago; These findings were contained in it's flagship report for 2022 titled "Global Economic Prospect". The report added hike in food prices and increased poverty. According to the NBS (National Bureau of Statistics); The inflation figure increased by 15.92 in March 2022, the report stated that it was due to increase in prices of gas, bread, cereals, liquid fuel and other food products. Nigeria's total debt when president Buhari took over on May 29,2015 was 12 trillion Naira. Today, Nigeria's total debt is about 40 trillion Naira. Few days ago the National assembly approved 4 trillion Naira for fuel subsidy in 2022, The highest subsidy payment under the Jonathan's administration was about 300 billion naira annually. The highest Nigeria's total yearly budget under Jonathan was about 4 trillion Naira, but president Buhari is spending 4 trillion Naira on subsidy alone in 2022. One of the agendas of this administration is to tackle corruption which on a long-run has led to witch-hunting of political opponents. The EFCC as an independent anti-corruption agency has been turned into an instrument to attack political opponents. Days ago, two former governors of Taraba and Plateau states were pardoned- this has caught the attention of Nigerians as they perceived the president's action was a strategy to gain more supporters for the APC in the affected states. A renowned human rights lawyer; Femi Falana said the gestures should be extended to all thrives in various prisons accross the country, Making reference to section 17 and section 42 of the Nigeria constitution which supports equity and against discrimination. The Global Terrorism Index (2019) ranked Nigeria as the third-worst nation prone to terrorism with no improvement since 2017. Aside insurgency, banditry and kidnapping are pushing Nigeria toward the brink of collapse with many calling for the resignation of the president for 'failing' to secure the country. The defence budget continued to be high with #878.4 billion and #840.56 billion earmarked for the military in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Yet, the performance of the military remains poor;Few weeks ago, the kaduna-abuja train was attacked leaving many dead and scores kidnapped, and recently, over 105 persons were killed in kanam local government area of plateau state as a result of the attack by bandits. What is the way forward to a secure nation,a united nation and accountability in governance? ©️ Oyeleye S. Adetayo 17th April, 2022.

Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, on Wednesday called for fairness in the People Democratic Party primary elections for the Osun governorship poll. The singer, whose uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was running for the position of Osun governor under the PDP ticket, made this known on his Twitter page. He wrote, “It has been brought to my attention that certain individuals have imported thugs and their machinery to our dear state to intimidate delegates. I would like to reassure Imole supporters and All Adhoc delegates that there is nothing to fear.” Imole supporters, in this context, referred to Senator Adeleke’s loyalists in the forthcoming Osun state election. This comes shortly after Adeleke’s supporters accused the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, of meddling with the affairs of Osun PDP. A fan, who replied to Davido’s tweet, said, “Just mention the person with your full chest. ‘Seyi Makinde’.” Affirming that he was referring to the governor, the music star tagged the Governor to his post. |
