Religion / Ak-47-bearing Pastor Arrested, Policeman Faces Probe, Church Apologises by Supersnews: 3:17am On Feb 14, 2023
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the presiding pastor, House on the Rock, Abuja Chapter, Uche Aigbe, for wielding an AK47 rifle while addressing the congregation.

The command also confirmed the arrest of the church’s Chief Security Officer and Inspector Musa Audu, for releasing his gun to Aigbe.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday.

Adeh said, “The FCT Police Command on the heels of intelligence arrested one pastor, Uche Aigbe, of House on the Rock cathedral, Abuja, and two others.

The pastor, whose message and demonstrations were tagged inciting by various media and social media users, was arrested in the early hours of Monday, February 13, 2023, alongside the church’s Chief Security Officer and one Inspector Musa Audu, who was on duty on the said day and had unprofessionally released his rifle to the said pastor without permission or recourse to police authority.

“While the discrete investigation has commenced, members of the public are urged to shun actions or utterances that are in breach of extant laws as the law is trite and all violators will be adequately sanctioned.”

PUNCH Metro gathered that Aigbe caused a stir when he mounted the pulpit with an AK47 rifle and addressed the congregation saying that he was ready for the people looking for his trouble.

“Today, there are some pastors with the gift of divination, who go about ripping people. This is why we should carry our guns and defend ourselves. I will particularly be coming for some of you sleeping in the church,” he said.

Aigbe’s remark made the entire congregation laugh as he urged them to guard their heart against false teachers.

The pastor’s action was captured in a video clip that was released online and it attracted mixed reactions from Nigerians.

However, following a report of the incident by The PUNCH on Sunday, police sources, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, said policemen swung into action immediately.

One of the sources said, “We got the report around 10.50 pm on Sunday on PUNCH Newspaper’s online publication that Pastor Uche Aigbe of House on the Rock Church mounted the pulpit with an AK47 rifle.

“Our discrete investigation later revealed that a policeman, Inspector Musa Audu, while on church duty on the same day, released his rifle to the pastor without permission.”

Another police source said, “Audu has now been detained alongside the pastor. But the FCT CP has submitted a recommendation to the IG for Audu’s dismissal, and he will be facing an orderly room trial soon.”

Meanwhile, the church, in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Monday evening, said Aigbe had always shown exemplary leadership since he became the pastor of the church in 1999.

Explaining that the pastor was trying to illustrate the message through his action, the church, however, said the gun was not loaded, adding that it did not support any form of violence.

The church noted that it would cooperate with the authorities throughout the investigation into the matter.

The statement read in part, “Without hesitation, pastor Uche has acknowledged the gravity of his actions and apologised unreservedly for them.

“As a church, House on the Rock rejects all forms of violence and we stand in the good news gospel of Jesus Christ which embraces peace and goodwill for all mankind.

“We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they carry out their investigations into the incident, and we will continue to engage internally to ensure this break in protocol does not happen again.”

Foreign Affairs / Turkey-syria Quake Deaths Exceed 28,000, UN Expects Toll To Double by Supersnews: 3:50am On Feb 13, 2023
People carry carpets as they walk by collapsed buildings at Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras on February 11, 2023, after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s southeast earlier in the week. – The death toll from a catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria climbed to more than 25,000 on Saturday, as rescuers worked in freezing weather to find people alive. (Photo by OZAN KOSE / AFP

Rescuers pulled a seven-month-old baby and a teenage girl from the rubble yesterday, nearly a week after an earthquake devastated Turkey and Syria and killed more than 28,000.

UN Relief Chief, Martin Griffiths, who disclosed this,  said he expected the death toll to at least double after he arrived in southern Turkey on Saturday to assess the quake’s damage.

Tens of thousands of rescue workers are scouring flattened neighbourhoods despite freezing weather that has deepened the misery of millions now in desperate need of aid.

Security concerns led some aid operations to be suspended, and dozens of people have been arrested for looting or trying to defraud victims in the aftermath of the quake in Turkey, according to state media.

But miraculous tales of survival still emerged from the destruction and despair.

“Is the world there?” asked 70-year-old Menekse Tabak as she was pulled out from the concrete in the southern city of Kahramanmaras — the epicentre of Monday’s 7.8-magnitude tremor — to applause and cries praising God, according to a video on state broadcaster TRT Haber.

A seven-month-old baby named Hamza was also rescued in southern Hatay more than 140 hours after the quake, while Esma Sultan, 13, was also saved in Gaziantep, state media reported.

Families were racing against time to find their missing relatives’ bodies in southern Turkey.

“We hear (the authorities) will no longer keep the bodies waiting after a certain period of time, they say they will take them and bury them,” Tuba Yolcu said in Kahramanmaras.

Another family clutched each other in grief at a cotton field transformed into a cemetery, with a seemingly endless stream of bodies arriving for swift burial.

26 million people

affected

Griffiths toured quake-hit areas of Kahramanmaras on Saturday, telling Sky News he expected the death toll to “double or more”.

“Soon, the search and rescue people will make way for the humanitarian agencies whose job it is to look after the extraordinary numbers of those affected for the next months,” he said in a video posted to Twitter.

The United Nations has warned that at least 870,000 people urgently need hot meals across Turkey and Syria. In Syria alone, up to 5.3 million people may have been made homeless.

Almost 26 million people have been affected by the earthquake, the World Health Organization (WHO) said as it launched a flash appeal on Saturday for $42.8 million to cope with immediate, towering health needs.

where at least 2,000 have died and tens of thousands have been forced out of unsafe homes.

Clashes have also been reported and the UN rights office on Friday urged all sides in the affected area — where Kurdish militants and Syrian rebels operate — to allow humanitarian access.

Austrian soldiers and German rescue workers called off their searches for several hours on Saturday in Hatay, citing difficult security amid firing between local groups.

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, considered a terrorist group by Ankara and its Western allies, has announced a temporary halt in fighting to ease recovery work.

A border crossing between Armenia and Turkey also opened for the first time in 35 years on Saturday to allow five trucks carrying food and water into the quake-hit region.

Medical aid for Aleppo

Aid has been slow to arrive in Syria, where years of conflict have ravaged the healthcare system and parts of the country remain under the control of rebels.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus took a flight full of emergency medical equipment into the quake-stricken city of Aleppo on Saturday.

Tedros toured damaged areas of the city and met two children who lost their parents in the earthquake.

“There are no words to express the pain they are going through,” he tweeted.

Damascus said it had approved the delivery of humanitarian assistance to quake-hit areas outside its control in Idlib province and a convoy was expected to leave on Sunday. The delivery was later postponed without explanation.

The transport ministry said 57 aid planes had landed in Syria this week.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the Security Council to authorise the opening of new cross-border aid points between Turkey and Syria. The council will meet to discuss Syria, possibly early next week.

Turkey said it was working on opening two new routes into rebel-held parts of Syria.

Anger builds

Five days of grief and anguish have been slowly building into rage at the poor quality of buildings as well as the government’s response to Turkey’s worst disaster in nearly a century.

Officials say 12,141 buildings were either destroyed or seriously damaged in the earthquake.

Turkish police reportedly detained 12 people on Saturday, including contractors, over collapsed buildings in the southeastern provinces of Gaziantep and Sanliurfa.

Officials and medics said 24,617 people had died in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria. The confirmed total now stands at 28,191.

Politics / CBN Likely To Pump More Cash Into Circulation Today by Supersnews: 3:33am On Feb 13, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may pump in today more new naira notes into circulation through the banks, The Nation learnt yesterday.

About N500 billion of the new notes have been injected into circulation since December 15, last year.

Today’s plan by the apex plan to pump more cash, close  to N1 trillion will come into circulation, a CBN board member confirmed to The Nation yesterday.

The board member who pleaded for anonymity said: “The CBN will do the needful to ensure that innocent Nigerians’ pains are eliminated. To this end, more new naira notes will be allocated to the banks from Monday for disbursing to the public.”

He assured that “the mint has adequate capacity to print the required volume of new naira notes”.

Our source explained that “the volume printed must be related to what the CBN adjudges to be optimal for the economy.

“What this means is that the CBN is being careful not to flood the system with naira notes thus creating another currency control problems for it with attendant inflationary pressures”.

The CBN board member also confirmed that the apex bank will abide by the Supreme Court’s decision to pull the brake on enforcing a deadline on the deposit of old Naira notes until February 15 when the Supreme Court will make hear the suit instituted by three governors.

“Whe cannot really speculate on extension or no extension as the issue is before the highest court in the land,” the apex bank’s board member said.

Regarding the advice of the Council of State to the CBN to either make more new notes available or re-circulate the old banknotes alongside the existing new notes, he told The Nation that “the advice of the Council of States is well-meaning. The Council is rightly concerned about the current challenges of the naira redesign implementation caused by selfish and sadistic individuals/organisations.”

Another senior CBN management official also revealed some developments to The Nation relating to the ongoing currency crisis.

The official disclosed: “The CBN has discovered that some powerful individuals used their cronies to open new bank accounts in order to withdraw new notes.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will soon go after them to see if they followed the Know Your Customer (KYC) protocol.”

He added that most commercial banks where deliberately keeping the new notes for their priority customers.

He said: “The banks are loyal to their priority customers; that’s why they reserve some new notes for them. They do not want to lose their high net worth customers. The apex bank has increased the volume of cash it released to the banks.”

According to him, the commercial banks have “not been returning old notes back to the CBN as expected”.

The CBN, the official noted, has also discovered that citizens were holding on to the new notes.

“People, are not depositing new notes but holding on to them” he said.

Politics / Obasanjo, Gowon, Jonathan Others Supports Cbn’s Cashless Policy by Supersnews: 4:14am On Feb 12, 2023
Former heads of state and presidents in Nigeria have given their support to the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

The former Nigerian leaders gave their support at the Council of State meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa on Friday.

The meeting had in attendance Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd), Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), and Goodluck Jonathan, while former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, joined the meeting online.

Two former Chief Justice of the Federation, Alfa Belgore and Mahmud Muhammad, were also in attendance.

But, they gave a caveat that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele should make new Naira notes available or recirculate the old notes to ease the suffering of Nigerians.

Jointly briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Governors of Taraba, Darius Ishaku , Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, AGF Abubakar Malami, said generally the policy was accepted by members but raised concerns about the implementations.

Ishaku said, “The CBN was advised to make money available in quantum. The old money can also be recirculated to ease the suffering of the poorest of the poor.”

Sanwo-Olu, on his part, said that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), briefed the council on a state of preparedness for the 2023 general elections, and assured that they were fully prepared.

Malami said, “We are on course as far as election preparedness is concerned.”

Politics / CBN Debunks False Claims Of Incapacity To Print New Naira Notes by Supersnews: 3:44am On Feb 12, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has debunked reports claiming the apex bank is incapacitated to print new naira notes.

There were reports earlier in some media claiming that the governor of the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the apex bank does not have the capacity to print adequate new naira notes.

The reports claimed that Emefiele made the disclosure on Friday when he briefed former Nigerian leaders at the emergency meeting of the National Council of State.

They also claimed that, on Friday, Emefiele had told the leaders that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (The Mint), suffers capacity constraints, resulting in the failure to print adequate new notes to replace the old N200, N500 and 1,000 notes.

But, the CBN, in a statement signed by its Director, Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, the CBN, said, at no time did the CBN Governor,, disclose this during his presentation to the National Council of State at its meeting on Friday, February 10, 2023.

The apex bank noted that its attention has been drawn to a misleading report misquoting Emefiele, as attributing the current challenge in the distribution of the newly redesigned naira banknotes to a shortage of printing materials at the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting

Company Plc.

The statement reads partly, “For the records, what Mr. Emefiele told the meeting was that the NSPMC was working on printing all denominations of the Naira to meet the transaction needs

of Nigerians.

“While the CBN appreciates the concerns shown by all stakeholders about the

distribution of the Naira, we are alarmed at the extent to which vested interests

are attempting to manipulate facts and pitch the public against the Bank.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN remains committed to performing its

monetary policy functions, as stipulated in the CBN Act, 2007, as amended. We

also wish to restate that the NSPMC has the capacity and enough materials to

produce the required indent of the Naira.

“The Bank, therefore, wishes to appeal to the public to disregard the said report

and exercise more restraint, even as we work assiduously to increase the

circulation of the new notes in the country,” it said.

The statement further said, “Similarly, there is a misleading voice note trending in social media alleging that the CBN planned to shut down some banks, particularly in a particular geo￾political region of the country.

“We wish to state unequivocally that there is no such plan and that the claims

are illogical and do not comply with the workings of the Nigerian banking

system.

“The public is therefore advised to ignore such recordings as they do

not represent the policy thrust of the CBN and are only the desperate attempts

of persons bent on inciting the public against the Bank,” it added.

Politics / Accept Bank Transfers, Pos Transactions, FG Orders Oil Marketers by Supersnews: 8:47pm On Feb 09, 2023
The Federal Government, on Thursday, commenced the deployment of security agencies to filling stations across the country to enforce the use of Point of Sale machines and the acceptance of bank transfers at the various outlets.

It said the move became vital following reports that some filling stations were rejecting POS machines and bank transfers from customers despite the severe cash crunch currently nationwide.

The government disclosed this through its Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, in a statement issued in Abuja by the agency’s General Manager, Corporate Communications and Stakeholders Management, Kimchi Apollo.

The statement read in part, “It has come to the attention of the NMDPRA that some retail outlets are not accepting the use of Point of Sale machines at their filling stations due to the recent cash crunch brought about by the new naira design.

“The authority frowns at this recent behaviour which is causing untold hardship for Nigerians at a time when all hands should be on deck to assist the government in the transition to the new naira.

“All retail outlets are directed to ensure the free use of POS and bank transfer for the sale of petroleum products to alleviate the suffering of customers at this critical time.”

The NMDPRA said it would work with law enforcement agencies to enforce the use of POS machines and acceptance of cash transfers at retail outlets, stressing that oil marketers who flout the directive would be dealt with.

“The authority and security agencies will be at retail outlets to ensure compliance with this directive and any filling station found violating this directive will be duly sanctioned.

“We reassure the general public of our commitment to ensuring good quality service in the sale and distribution of petroleum products nationwide.”

Business / Nigeria To Emerge Africa’s Biggest Oil-refining Hub – Report by Supersnews: 4:02am On Feb 07, 2023
Despite having no crude oil refining capacity currently, Nigeria is actually on track to becoming Africa’s biggest crude oil refining hub in the next two years, the latest research on African refineries, along with the continent’s outlook for 2023, stated.

Hawilti, a pan-African investment research agency and advisor to businesses, investors, public and private institutions, as well as governments in Africa, released a report on the research on Monday.

“Both the opening of the Dangote Refinery and the rehabilitation of state-owned refineries have the potential to make Nigeria Africa’s biggest refining hub by 2025,” the report, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, stated.

It said there was a positive outlook in West Africa and that the region was notably on the verge of change as new capacity was expected to come on stream in 2023.

The report stated that the region already housed the largest refining capacity in sub-Saharan Africa, although only 23 per cent of it was currently operational.

“The long-awaited Dangote Refinery, a 650,000 barrels per day single-train crude refining facility that has been a decade in the making, is finally expected to start production this year. Its commissioning is already sending hopes that it could finally start rebalancing Nigeria’s trade deficit.

SEE THIS! Buhari Lacks Capacity – Kenneth Okonkwo
“With all state-run refineries undergoing rehabilitation, Nigeria imports all its petroleum products, and heavily subsidises gasoline (petrol). It needs the Dangote Refinery to decrease imports, generate currency savings, fight inflation, and ultimately improve its macroeconomic outlook,” it stated.

It noted that Africa’s biggest oil producer had embarked on the rehabilitation of its three state-owned refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna – totaling some 445,000bpd of refining capacity.

“Tecnimont continues to make progress on bringing Port Harcourt’s complex back to 90 per cent of its capacity while Daewoo E&C was selected in 2022 to execute two ‘quick fix’ projects at both Warri and Kaduna,” Hawilti explained.

It, however, noted that the market was also driven by private oil producers and asset developers who were building modular refineries next to oilfields in the Niger Delta.

Career / Japa: Skilled Manpower Shortage Hits Banks by Supersnews: 3:53am On Feb 07, 2023
The spate of migration among bankers in the country is giving stakeholders reasons to worry. DEBORAH DAN-AWOH writes on how japa has worsened the skilled manpower gap in the banking industry

A former teller at Sterling Bank, Gift Akpan, left the shores of Nigeria for the United States to pursue her dreams. Gift told SUPERS.ng that she had always wanted to travel but decided to gain hands-on experience in the local job market first and raise money to facilitate her migration.

“I graduated from the University of Ibadan as the best student in my set. I had always wanted to pursue my graduate studies abroad. So, immediately after my bachelor’s degree, I planned to travel, but I wanted to get some industry experience for a year or two before furthering my studies abroad. After university, I applied for many jobs and wrote tests.”

Akpan eventually became a teller with Sterling Bank as an outsourced member of staff. It meant that she had to earn lower than other tellers who had regular employment with the bank.

“This was a role that the bank employed National Diploma graduates and IT students for, so when a bachelor’s degree holder like me got in, there was segregation. As tellers, we had to work from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm.

She explained that the working conditions were terrible. “I had colleagues who would come to the office and not eat for the whole day because they couldn’t get up for a break. Because we were tellers, we received bad treatment. They use you so much and pay very little.”

After battling the challenges that came with the job, Akpan said she finally gave in and left the country.

Similarly, the head of the Brand and Communication Department of one of tier two banks who does not want his name mentioned in print resigned and relocated with his family to one of the European countries.

He had spent over 15 years as a banker and attended much training in the course of his job in the bank.

He pointed to the state of the country’s economy and security situation as reasons for his migration.

Akpan’s story reflects what many young people working in the banking sector go through, which has been the reason they decided to migrate to Western countries for greener pastures. Many of them have cited meagre salaries, poor working conditions, inflation and insecurity as reasons for relocating out of the country.

Japa, the slang for migration in Nigeria, which literally means escape, has seen the country many of its skilled manpower to countries such as the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, etc.

The banking sector has been one of the most hit by the japa syndrome, as many bankers have left the country in recent times.

In June, a report by the United Kingdom Home office stated that Nigeria recorded the highest number of migrants to the United Kingdom, thus becoming the third largest nationality group in the country.

According to the report, “The number of sponsored study visas granted in the year ending June 2022 is the highest on record in our time series, with the substantial increase representing both a recovery from lower numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic but also an increase on the pre-pandemic period.”

Mass resignation

A source from Access Bank told SUPERS.ng that various branches had recorded massive resignations in the last two years.

“It started like two years ago, immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic. Everybody started feeling uncomfortable, saying what next? What will happen? And, of course, the floor was opened for people to travel. You know we have different types of visas. Also, everything boils down to the information at your disposal.”

The source said that one of the bank’s branches did not open for three days, because the branch manager, head of operations and cash officer left the same month.

“So, they could not open, and the head office had to intervene,” he said.

According to the source, most bank employees who want to migrate usually use their annual and from there forward their resignation letters, adding that most of them did not resign directly before migrating. They go through their annual leave.

The source stated, “A lot of people are resigning, This December alone, a lot of people crossed over. So, in May now, they should expect another set of massive resignations. People are leaving every day. For instance, out of 100 members of staff, 30 to 40 have resigned. It will create more job vacancies, and they will recruit more staff.”
Talent gap widens

The increasing brain drain in banks is already taking a took on the financial sector. Access to finance to fund their migration expenses has made the sector susceptible to brain drain.

Banks spend a huge amount of money to recruit fresh hands to replace skilled manpower who have migrated.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s unemployment rate currently stands at 33.3 per cent.

Despite the huge unemployment rate in the country, the country has been grappling with a paucity of employable graduates due to the poor state of the country’s education.

Japa has led to growing concerns that the relocation will cause a shortage of skilled manpower.

Speaking with SUPERS.ng recently, Director-General of Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, Adewale Oyerinde, said in terms of relocation, India comes first, followed by Palestine and then Nigeria in the context of migration to the United Kingdom.”

“So, it is not a strange thing. Sometimes, when there is the mobility of labour, people will move for many reasons apart from the two predominant reasons, which are economic and security reasons.

“It creates talent issues because businesses also need very strong hands and competent workforce to be competitive and to grow. So, if those workforces are moving, it creates a gap within the system, and some have said every problem creates an opportunity.

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has convicted and sentenced to death by hanging, two former members of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad for extra-judicial killing.

Five members of the SARS team, ASP Samuel Chigbu, Shedrack Ibibo, Magus Awuri, Ogoligo, and Olisa Emeka, SUPERS.ng observed they were standing trial for killing Michael Akor and Michael Igwe, while in their custody for allegedly stealing recharge cards in Oyigbo, Oyigbo Local Government Area in 2015.

But Chigbu and Ogoligo died in custody at the correctional centre in Port Harcourt, while Ibibo, Awuri, and Emeka continued with the trial.

The trial judge, Justice M. O. Opara, in her judgment found Ibibo and Awuri guilty of conspiracy to murder, while Emeka was acquitted.

Speaking after the judgment, the state prosecution council expressed satisfaction with the judgment.

She said, “The Court found out that they actually were guilty of murdering the two deceased persons. The court discharged and acquitted Olisa Emeka based on the findings of the court because the prosecution did not prove its case concerning the last person.

The mother of one of those murdered, Kathrine Akoro, SUPERS.ng observed that she expressed happiness over the judgment, saying the policemen would have a taste of their own medicine.

Crime / Raheem: I Disarmed Vandi After Shooting — ASP by Supersnews: 3:40am On Feb 02, 2023
A prosecution witness, Assistant Superintendent of Police Olorunshola Segun, according to SUPERS.ng findings on Wednesday, narrated how he disarmed ASP Drambi Vandi, the alleged killer of a Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, on Christmas Day.

Segun, who testified before a Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square, said he disarmed Vandi shortly after the incident.

He said, “I am a police officer presently attached a the Ajah Police Station. On December 25, 2022, we were scheduled to go on patrol for 24 hours.

“I was at Ajah Police Station. I was one of the operational officers in charge of patrolling the neighborhood. We had the patrol team divided into various sections and areas of patrol. I was the patrol officer in charge of Ajah.

“Drambi Vandi and I were on patrol together; he was on patrol from Ajah to Ilaje, while mine was from Ajah to Sangotedo. All patrol officers on the said date left the police station after the parade.

“Two hours later, I came back to the station; somebody rode down on a bike; he met me where I was sitting. The man on the bike reported that one of our ASP, Drambi Vandi, shot a pregnant woman.”

The witness, who was led in evidence by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo, as the fifth prosecution witness, stated that after the rider passed the information, he went to inform the Divisional Police Officer.

According to him, the DPO called the anti-crime patrol team 99; then he went with the patrol team to the hospital.

He explained that after about 30mins, the DPO came back with the ASP.

“When he came back, he was wearing a native shirt on his uniform trouser and he was dangling his rifle on his left shoulder. When the DPO came in, he was led by two other armed policemen. So, myself, the DPO and the entourage went to the charge room. The DPO instructed that he should be disarmed and detained.

“He handed his rifle over to me there in the charge room because I am next in command to the DPO. After handing over, the armourer, whose office was right in front of the charge room, asked me to give him the rifle.

“I don’t know what the armourer did, because I just handed over the rifle,” he added.

During cross-examination, the defence counsel, Mr Adetokunbo Odutola, asked the witness if he made a written statement in respect of the matter and Segun said yes.

After he confirmed the statement he made at the State Criminal Investigation Department, the defence counsel sought to tender the statement and Dr Martins did not object to it.

The statement was marked as Exhibit P6.

Onigbanjo told the court that the prosecution presented the ballistics report containing evidence relating to firearms involved in the death of Raheem to the defence counsel.

Justice Ibironke Harrison adjourned the case till February 2, 2023, for continuation of trial.

Politics / PDP PCC: Wike Frustrated, Lacks Integrity by Supersnews: 3:25am On Feb 02, 2023
The Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Council in Rivers State has taken a swipe at the state governor, Nyesom Wike, over the cancellation of the approval granted for the party’s presidential campaign in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The spokesman for the PDP PCC in the state, Dr Leloonu Nwibubasa, who stated this in an interview with SUPERS.ng, also said the governor lacked integrity for not naming his preferred presidential candidate in January as he promised.

Nwibubasa said from all indications, the governor was increasingly frustrated.

On Wednesday, the state government cancelled the approval given to the PDP for the rally of its standard bearer to hold in the state on February 11, 2023.

The cancellation was contained in a letter signed by the state Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, and addressed to the Director General, PDP PCC, Aminu Tambuwal.

The letter said credible information available to the state government showed that the PDP PCC was working in collaboration with a faction of the All Progressives Congress in the state led by Tonye Cole.

It added that information at the government’s disposal show that activities of the APC in the state have always been marred by violence due largely to irreconcilable internal conflicts within the party.

It added, “The Rivers State Government is unable to risk damage to or destruction of the very valuable and priced asset, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, which your use of the same in collaboration with your Tonye Patrick Cole APC faction will expose it to.

“In the circumstance, the Rivers State Government has come to the painful but inevitable decision to withdraw the approval earlier given to you for the use of the stadium and the said approval is hereby withdrawn.”

Nwibubasa, while confirming the development, described the state government’s earlier approval as a Greek gift.

Berating Wike, Nwibubasa further said the governor was not a good fighter, because a good fighter knows when to quit.

Nwibubasa stated, “We are not surprised when certain decisions are taken because it all amounts to the fact that the level of frustration is increasing.

“We will only appeal to him that he should return to his party and return to the part of peace. And that is part of honour. No one fights a war and refuses to evaluate the same war, and knows when to call it quits. He is not a good fighter.

“For the presidential candidate of the PDP, we are very certain that Rivers people are happy with him. They are in love with him and they are going to vote for him en masse come February 25, 2023.”

Asked what he thinks about Wike’s inability to name his preferred presidential candidate as he had promised, he said it shows the governor has no integrity.

“His inability to name his preferred candidate as publicly announced in January, again is a pointer to his level of instability and incoherence.”

“It tells of his integrity that he cannot match his words with action. So, for us, it is painful that we have a governor who says one thing and does the other.

Politics / EFCC To Raid Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt Currency Hawkers by Supersnews: 2:28am On Feb 01, 2023
The commission indicated this on Tuesday when it disclosed that it had arrested members of a syndicate of currency racketeers trading in the redesigned naira notes at Zone 4, Wuse and Dei-Dei axis of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Abuja suspects were nabbed according to findings by SUPERS.ng during an operation to halt the illicit currency trading carried out by the anti-graft agency between Saturday and Monday.

The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.

Findings from EFCC officials showed its operatives had penned down some commercial nerve centres in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kaduna, where currency hawkers are having a field day.

The EFCC planned raids came on the heels of similar raids of currency hawkers and racketeers by personnel of the Department of State Services.

The EFCC planned raids came a day after the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefile, said the apex bank would collaborate with law enforcement agencies such as the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, to track heavy withdrawals.

SUPERS.ng reports that the CBN had extended the deadline for the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes from January 31 to February 10.

The Department of State Services revealed on Monday that its operatives arrested some currency traders who had turned the sale of newly redesigned notes into brisk business.

The secret police also alleged that the perpetrators were working in cahoots with officials of commercial banks.

Meanwhile, the EFCC further noted that its findings revealed that some of the money traders were working with officials of Money Deposit Banks, vowing to extend its operation to all major commercial centres across the country until all the syndicates involved in the illegal trade are demobilized.

The anti-graft agency also urged financial market operators to ensure compliance with the guidelines set by the CBN.

It added, “The suspects have made useful statements, including a disclosure that they were acting in cohort with some unscrupulous officials of Money Deposit Banks.

“The commission will extend the operation to all the major commercial centres of the country until all the syndicates involved in the illegal trade are demobilised. Financial system operators are also warned to desist from the sharp practices or risk arrest and prosecution.

“Zonal commanders of the EFCC also met with officials of various banks in their commands in an effort to ascertain the volume of the new notes issued to the commercial banks and how the banks were dispensing the monies to their customers.”

“The commanders urged the financial market operators to ensure compliance with the guidelines set by the Central Bank of Nigeria while disclosing that they have dispatched operatives across their commands to monitor the level of compliance by banks and other operators in the financial market.”

Heavy withdrawals

The apex bank has asked commercial banks to stop multiple debit card withdrawals as it stepped up efforts to implement a seamless currency change regime.

The CBN governor, Emefiele, in a meeting with commercial banks on Monday also reportedly directed banks not to pay old notes via ATMs or over the counter.

He equally instructed the EFCC and ICPC officials to inspect bank branches over the next two weeks to ensure full compliance with the guidelines.

The reported directive read in part, “At the CBN Bankers Committee meeting today (Monday), the governor instructed Banks as follows: No Bank is authorised to pay out old notes via ATMs or in bank branches over-the-counter

“No payment of new notes over the counter. Banks are only allowed to release new notes via ATMs. Corporates that require cash should only be given the old N100 notes and below. Corporates must not be given new notes.

“EFCC/ICPC officials will accompany CBN examiners to inspect bank branches over the next two weeks to assess full Compliance with CBN guidelines above.

“Officials of branches that fail to comply or that release cash to corporates and politicians will face termination of their contracts and the respective banks will be sanctioned

“No branch should allow an individual with multiple debit cards to do multiple transactions on ATMs.

“All new notes have tracking numbers to trace them back to state, bank and bank branches. So, notes confiscated at parties and other locations can be traced back to the bank and applicable branch.”

Bank customers in Lagos expressed worries over their inability to get either old naira notes over the counter or at the ATMs.

The two banks visited by The PUNCH in Marina had queues of customers in the banking hall.

According to the customers, the ban on over-the-counter transactions of old notes was meant to compound the problems of Nigerians.

While speaking with our correspondent at the banking hall of the United Bank for Africa located by Leventis, Marina, Adewale Adebayo said the banks were out to punish the masses.

He said, “When you are talking about banning counter transactions of the old notes when the majority of the machines were not working, the decision does not make any sense.

“They say it is going to stop the old notes in circulation, but this is not true. These old notes are still everywhere. The PoS people are still giving the old notes. Banning it without the provision on how to get the new ones is too complicated for those of us who need cash for daily survival.’’

Suleiman Rasaki, a cooperative operator, told The PUNCH at the banking hall of the Sterling bank in Marina, Lagos, that the rationale behind banning transactions of the old notes when the ATMs were not dispensing sufficient cash was ill-conceived.

But Emmanuel Anoro believed the decision was the right one considering the depreciation in the value of the naira.

He added that “The changing of new naira notes is okay. It will help to change the contaminated notes and discourage people who are keeping money inside their houses.”

As of the time of filing the report around 2 pm, only a few machines were working in all the ATMs visited in Marina.

CBN directive

Our correspondent also reported that the banks visited fully complied with the CBN directive as other denominations such as N200 and N100 as well as a few new notes were sighted at the hall.

Speaking with The PUNCH, a Pos operator, who identified herself as Mercy disclosed that her account officer told her that she could only withdraw N10,000 over-the-counter in N100 and N50 denominations.

“I use this money for my business; how can I be handing out N50 naira to customers. We can’t get money at the ATMs. I have had to buy old notes from people who have them. This is so frustrating, I wish the deadline was not extended.

‘’The extension has thrown us into this turmoil. Going forward, I am raising my charges: N200 for N5,000 old notes and N500 for N5,000 new notes.

Another customer, Fatima, stated, “I have been queuing at the ATMs but when it gets to my turn, the ATM won’t dispense cash. I have taken all my cash to restock my shop and now I am in trouble.”

Other customers who attempted to withdraw from the PoS complained about the poor network and bank officials being unavailable to solve their problems

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a trader in Mowe, Ogun state, said, “Right now, my money is stuck; about N5000. I tried to transfer to buy a pack of drinks and the transaction failed. The PoS operator did not get the money and now my money is hanging. My husband tried to go to the bank to complain but the sight of the mammoth crowd dissuaded him.”

Findings by The PUNCH indicated that the recent directive of the CBN to commercial banks to dispense only N100, N50, and N20 instead of higher denominations might have prompted some banks to stop dispensing cash as many Deposit Money Banks failed to issue money to stranded customers.

Our correspondent observed that none of the banks along the Ikotun-Idimu axis was dispensing any currency.

A staff member of Access Bank at Ikotun, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that they stopped dispensing cash through the ATM last week.

“The ATMs stopped paying since last week and for over-the-counter payment, we are no longer paying because there is not enough (cash) to pay,” he noted.

An angry customer, Stanley, who was unable to get cash at a Union Bank branch on the same axis, said, “My brother, they are not paying at all, I have been here for the past two hours, and no payment. I have an account with First Bank, I had gone there earlier and they still didn’t pay me. I don’t know what this country is turning into. You have money in this country, you can’t use it.”

Addressing the impatient customers, a bank official stated, “The N100 (note) they asked us to issue over-the-counter is not enough. We just don’t know what to do. We are only hopeful that things will get better.”

Meanwhile, a staff member of the Zenith bank told our correspondent that their ATMs had been dispensing money all day but later ran out of cash.

In the Magboro, Ibafo axis of Ogun State, The PUNCH noticed that a lot of bank customers were not pleased with the lower notes being dispensed over-the –counter.

A displeased customer who gave his name as Joseph Madu said, “I wanted to withdraw N50,000 but imagine them giving me N20 notes. How many bundles will I carry and all my hands will be full?’’

Another bank customer, Moji Ajibola said, “How do they expect us to carry this money around? I have had to reduce the sum I want to withdraw because there’s no way I can carry that load of money before all these bad boys think I am carrying big money.’’

But a bank worker explained that the bank loaded the lower notes into the ATMs in line with the CBN directive.

Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, has distanced himself from friend requests being sent from social media accounts, purportedly from him, saying he does not own or operate any social media accounts.

Oloyede disclosed this on Friday in a statement by the board’s Head, Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

The statement read,

”The attention of the Board has been drawn to a LinkedIn account purported to be the account of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, and sending friend requests to members of the public. This is a ploy initiated with the sole aim of defrauding gullible members of the public.

“The Board wishes to state that Prof. Is-haq Oloyede does not own or operate any social media account and neither has he asked anybody to open or manage one on his behalf.

“LinkedIn is a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. As such, it should be noted that the goal of the site is to enable registered users to connect with people they know and trust professionally. Prof. Oloyede does not belong to this class of individuals nor intend to join.

“This disclaimer became necessary in view of some unscrupulous elements, who have purportedly opened a LinkedIn account on his behalf to hoodwink unsuspecting members of the public with their bogus claims of the erudite professor helping to network business enterprises, managing careers, providing jobs, running a research firm or connecting people with business contacts of firms or industry through the account

“The Board urges the general public to be wary of these criminal elements so as not to fall victims to the scammers.”

Politics / FG Raises 14-Man Panel To End Fuel Scarcity by Supersnews: 3:30am On Jan 25, 2023
The Federal Government is meeting with operators in the midstream and downstream oil sector as part of measures towards developing strategic stock for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, in key locations across the country,

It said the national strategic stocks would help in addressing the recurring fuel scarcity in Nigeria, as it also announced the constitution of a 14-man committee to find a lasting solution to the disruptions in the supply and distribution of petroleum products.

On the strategic stock, the Executive Director, Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ogbugo Ukoha, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday at the ongoing stakeholders’ consultation forum on midstream and downstream petroleum regulations.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, he explained that the NMDPRA and stakeholders were going through the eight draft regulations, which were the third batch, put together by the authority, adding that the National Strategic Stock Regulations was one of them.

He said, “Section 181 of the PIA (Petroleum Industry Act) compels us to develop strategic stock. On the supply issues that we usually have, recall that a few weeks ago, there was flooding in Lokoja and Bayelsa, and supplies were impacted negatively.

“We should have strategic stock across the country. And there are storage everywhere, even though pipelines need to be revamped. So this strategic stock regulations addresses that need, and it is a priority.”

Ukoha added, “It takes three to four days for trucks from the coastal areas to get here (Abuja), and if something happens on the road, then you will see how it will impact on the supplies in the Federal Capital Territory.

“On Friday, we had to go to Niger State, where three trucks fell across the Bida-Lapai and Agae road. We were there to make sure that those trucks were cleared. But with the strategic stock, most of that will be addressed.

“If you have that kind of issue, you’ll just recall some volumes from the nearest storage. So these are very important draft regulations that the authority is putting forward.”

The NMDPRA official explained that the midstream and downstream arms of the sector were very strategic positions in the industry, and the regulations being put out by the authority were critical

“If you look at this third batch of draft regulations we are considering, there are eight of them and almost all of them speak to a particular aspect in the value chain,” he stated.

Business / Banks Battle New Naira Shortage Ahead Deadline by Supersnews: 6:19am On Jan 23, 2023
Today makes it 8 days to the January 31 deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria to stop the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes from being legal tender, banks’ Automated Teller Machines in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country are still dispensing the old notes, findings by SUPERS.ng have revealed.

Despite the apex bank and depositing banks’ assurances that Nigerians would begin to receive the new naira notes from ATMs across different platforms, findings as of Sunday showed that many ATMs belonging to the financial institutions were dispensing the old notes.

Although some of the ATMs visited in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Osun, and Gombe, among others, dispensed the new notes, SUPERS.ng observed that banks were still loading a significant number of their ATMs with the old naira ntes which are due to be phased out by the CBN in about a week’s time.

When SUPERS.ng visited some bank ATMs along the Ikotun-Idimu Road, Lagos on Sunday morning, it was observed that several ATMs were dispensing the old notes with only a few dispensing the new notes.

While customers got the new notes from Sterling Bank ATM on the axis, Access Bank ATMs dispensed the old notes.

Findings by SUPERS.ng showed that five of the seven banks visited by our correspondent were still dispensing the old notes to customers.

At the Guaranty Trust Bank on 50, Ogunusi Road, Ojodu area of Lagos, all three ATMs adjacent to the main building of the bank were dispensing old notes around 1 pm when one of our correspondents visited the place.

When SUPERS.ng visited the ATMs at Access Bank in the same Ojodu axis, only the old naira notes were available to the customers.

Meanwhile, a different report was observed at all the ATMs in the premises of First Bank Plc located opposite Michael Agbaje World Outreach, Aina Junction, Ojodu.

All three ATMs were dispensing the newly redesigned naira notes when SUPERS.ng visited the bank.

However, the eight ATMs at the Zenith Bank located on Ogunusi Road were seen dispensing the old notes in different denominations.

Although some bank customers said they received the newly redesigned notes, when The PUNCH visited the United Bank for Africa’s ATMs in the area, some of the machines were however seen dispensing the old ones.

The ATMs located inside the premises of GTBank at Gate, Oke-Afa, Lagos, were seen dispensing a mixture of old and new notes, with the old notes surpassing the new ones.

Phones / Amidst SIM-NIN Restrictions, Mobile Subscriptions Hit 222 Million by Supersnews: 3:46am On Jan 23, 2023
The number of mobile subscriptions in Nigeria rose to 222.23 million in 2022 despite the implementation of the Federal Government’s National Identification Number-Subscriber Identity Module policy, SUPERS.ng learnt.

At the start of the policy in April, over 72.77 million active telecommunication subscriptions were barred from making calls. But the industry has since shaken off the effect of this and grew by 13.89 per cent in 2022.

According to new data from the Nigerian Communications Commission, SUPERS.ng garther that the total number of subscriptions grew from 195.13 million as of December 2021 to 222.23 million as of December 2022. This growth signified a complete shake-off of the decline that plagued the telecoms industry in 2021 when the total number of mobile subscriptions declined by 4.42 per cent from 204.15 million as of December 2020 to 195.13 million as of December 2021.

In the period under review, SUPERS.ng learnt that MTN Nigeria grew by 20.96 per cent from 73.59 million to 89.02 million; Airtel grew by 11.38 per cent from 53.93 million to 60.07 million; Globacom grew by 9.98 per cent from 54.82 million to 60.29 million; and 9mobile grew by 0.49 per cent from 12.85 million to 12.79 million.

In 2022, teledensity, the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants living within an area grew to 116.60 per centthe  (highest on record).

Nigeria’s mobile population is the largest in Africa and is expected to continue to grow because of its large youth population. According to GSMA, the global body representing telcos, 18 million new Nigerians will become unique mobile subscribers by 2025.

On SUPERS.ng, the Chief Operating Officer, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, Ajibola Olude, attributed the growth of mobile subscriptions in 2022 to the increased usage of Internet of Things devices, and combined government effort.

He said, “Many factors were responsible for the growth of the sector in 2022. IoT and robotics need SIMs to be able to work because they are Internet enabled.

“IoTs are the order of the day now. A lot of things are connected to the Internet, and they need SIMs. Asides from that, SUPERS.ng said at the federal and state level, there is serious awareness on the need to adopt ICT. Many services have moved online, and don’t forget that the CBN is pursuing a cashless economy which means that there is a need to probably use an Internet-enabled phone.”

Politics / Marketers Said Petrol May Hit N800/litre On Subsidy Removal by Supersnews: 2:45am On Jan 23, 2023
As the scarcity of petrol, continued on Sunday, SUPERS.ng learnt that oil marketers have stated that the cost of the commodity would cross N800/litre once subsidy on PMS is removed.

Industry operators according to SUPERS.ng had repeatedly stated that the high cost of subsidy on petrol was a burden on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and was contributory to the prolonged crisis in the downstream oil sector. NNPC is the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, recently suggested that the government should gradually withdraw subsidy on PMS, stressing that the budgetary allocation for subsidy would end in June.

But oil marketers told our correspondent (SUPERS.ng) that while it could be advisable to remove subsidy, Nigerians should know that the cost of petrol could cross N800/litre once the commodity was no longer subsidised.

We are businessmen and every businessman wants to make a profit. You know the law of supply and demand. When the product is scarce, prices will rise, and vice versa., SUPERS.ng learnt.

He explained that the downstream sector was not structured for adequate competition, adding that this could also pose challenges when subsidy was eventually removed.

He said, “By the time you are removing subsidy, you should know that the market is not properly opened and there is no competition. They always tell you about Dangote Refinery. We must understand that Dangote is a privately owned company.

“The pipelines of that facility were not even designed to run in any Nigerian state, rather it was designed to run to neighbouring countries, and maybe that one in Lekki there, that is all.

This is in addition to the long queues of vehicles that often add to the woes of Nigerians due to the traffic they cause when they spill into main roads.

SUPERS.ng compile some comment from micro blogging site Twitter

According to one Instagram user, @paschal_dheyvid, who bought the commodity at N200 per litre, he had to pay N1, 000 to gain entrance into the filling station and still had to join a long queue.

The same situation was experienced by a Twitter user, @thatboyyouhate, who said, “I was at a filling station this morning and they had to take N1, 000 from me for my 25-litre keg.”

An Instagram user, @charlessoronnadimotors, said he bought the commodity at “N420 per litre here in Aboh Mbaise, Imo State.”

Twitter user, @supapraise, lamented the long hours he spent in the queue at a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation filling station in Port Harcourt before he could buy the commodity.

He wrote, “I spent 11hrs (5am to join an already long queue. I left at 4pm) at the NNPC filling station in PH. I bought for N189. That morning, it was N179. They paused selling and adjusted the metre to the new price of N189. Paused selling again to maintain their generator since there was no NEPA electricity.”

Expressing anger at the APC which is seeking to remain in power in 2023, one @RexAgu1 said, “N360 per litre. APC has failed the unborn kids. They have removed subsidy without letting Nigerians know.”

On his part, one @King_Olivertwit sarcastically said, “APC supporters are buying it for N50/L while others are buying it for N350 to as much as N500 per litre.”

One Pascal Nwankwo, @pascalnwankwo7, blamed the situation on the APC, adding, “…and some misguided fellows are still campaigning for the APC.”

On Instagram, one @malaro44 laid curses on those still working to ensure that the APC retained the Presidency after the end of the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). He said, “People voting APC, may everything about APC never depart from your household… the suffering, the hardship, the kidnapping and insecurity.”

Efforts of SUPERS.ng to get the reaction of the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, proved abortive as his phone number was busy and he didn’t respond to the text message sent to him by our correspondent.
