UPDATE

NEWS EXPRESS – More customers are closing their accounts with Access Bank Plc following the example and call of an Abuja-based rights group angered by the bank’s insensitivity in sacking hundreds of workers only to use the money thus saved to host a foreign musician.
RELATED POST:Close your account with Access Bank – Activist tasks Nigerians
The campaign to boycott Access Bank over the issue was launched exactly a week ago by the Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), whose National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said last week Friday:
“Today we served Access Bank notice that we will on Monday severe all business relationship with them by closing down our accounts. As a struggling NGO we have very insignificant transactions with Access Bank but we appeal to good spirited Nigerians to pull out their savings because of the inhumane action of sacking 200 staff and at the same time coughing out N200 million to hire foreign musician recently.”
HURIWA’s call was promptly backed by Change Movement Nigeria, whose founder, Mr. Olu Adegoke, said: “In solidarity with the sacked 200 staff of Access Bank, I am calling on all my friends to close down their accounts with Access Bank. Let us stand with HURIWA on this cause. Enough of taking bull shit from these corporate robbers. It is wicked to sack 200 workers only to spend 200 million to host a musician.”
Checks by News Express showed that a growing number of people responding positively to the boycott call. Below are some of the responses:
Adimora Umennabuike: i ve close my account wt wuse br.
Jonathan Justin: Its done
Tunde Akpeji: I have similarly communicated my plans to close my account with this bank especially when they are paying a foreign artiste some mind blowing cash to perform in the wake of these lay offs
Kennedy Onyegbado: I wil just hv to close my financial relationsip wit them
Osagie Christian: Aburime My account with this Bank will be closed forthwith
Omoba Kenneth: Comrade My broda tanx for the clarion call. We will ascent to it immediately.
Awhgum Dugkess: My NGO-Dugkess Foundation wil join yos 2 close our account though nt a significant acct if l may borow ur words against dis inhuman act-
Daniel Stanley: I totally support this concerted approach to eliminate unhumanity in Access Bank.
News Express reports that Access Bank has yet to react to the development despite efforts to get its Corporate Affairs Manager, Segun Fafore, to state its side of the story.

There is a need to stop this corporate irresponsibility!!!,!

NAIJA HOTTEST GIST – The founder of Change Movement Nigeria, Mr. Olu Adegoke, has thrown his weight behind the ongoing campaign by the Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) for the boycotting of Access Bank. The bank stands accused of sacking hundreds of workers only to spend about N200 million to bring in an American singer, Mariah Carey, to perform at its Christmas concert.
“In solidarity with the sacked 200 staff of Access Bank, I am calling on all my friends to close down their accounts with Access Bank. Let us stand with HURIWA on this cause. Enough of taking bull shit from these corporate robbers. It is wicked to sack 200 workers only to spend 200 million to host a musician,” the Ibadan-based Adegoke said in a message posted on his Facebook wall yesterday.
Change Movement Nigeria prides itself as “the Voice of the Voiceless, the Conscience of the nation and the future of the country.”
“We are committed to adopting non-violent means to actualize our goals of a new country devoid of tribalism, mediocrity, religious fundamentalism, no-colonialism and corporatocracy,” says a message on the group’s website. “We call for an open-government, accountable leadership and informed political space. We demand a nation where the resources of all shall be distributed within limits of agreed justice. We call for the end of poverty.”
As reported yesterday by News Express, the Abuja-based HURIWA last Friday flagged off a campaign to boycott Access Bank’s services over its anti-poor management strategy.
“Today we served Access Bank notice that we will on Monday severe all business relationship with them by closing down our accounts. As a struggling NGO we have very insignificant transactions with Access Bank but we appeal to good spirited Nigerians to pull out their savings because of the inhumane action of sacking 200 staff and at the same time coughing out N200 million to hire foreign musician recently,” HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said.
News Express sought to get the reaction of Access Bank but the Corporate Affairs Manager, Segun Fafore, did not respond to text messages sent to his phones on Saturday and yesterday.

Nigeria is an artificial entity. As Obafemi Awolowo sagaciously observed, Nigeria is a mere geographical expression and not a nation-state. Nigeria is composed of many ethnic groups forcefully conglomerated against their will.

In 1914, Frederick Lugard, a Briton, without consulting the various ethnic groups that live in the geographical space now called Nigeria, arbitrarily amalgamated the various groups into one human polity. He did so not for the people’s good but for British national interest (each European power was scrambling to secure as much African territory for itself as was possible).

We do not need to cry over spilled milk by complaining about what Lugard did. What we can do is see what we can do about it in the here and now.

We begin this endeavor by asking: what is the critical problem with Nigeria? It is that it is composed of different tribes; some of these tribes are as different from others as night is from day.

There is our beginning point, our point of departure. What is the realistic solution to this problem?

(1) Break the country up so that each ethnic group rules itself as a country. This solution is not good for some of the groups are so small that they cannot be viable modern polities.

(2) The most realistic solution to the Nigerian problem is to restructure Nigeria so that each ethnic group in it has political space to govern itself and then come to the central government to talk about issues that affect all of them.

There are many tribes in Nigeria; some of them are large and some small. Clearly, the small ones do not have the economic wherewithal to be able to make a go of it in the extant world. What we can do is make each of the larger tribes a state and then combine the smaller tribes into additional states.

Thus, we would have the following states in Nigeria: Igbo State (which must include Igwe Ocha, so-called Port Harcourt, Asaba, Agbo etc. with capital at Owerri), Ijaw State (with capital at Yenogoa), Efik State (with capital at Calaba), Edo State (with capital at Benin), Urobo State (with capital at Warri), Yoruba State (with capital at Ife), Benue State (composed of small tribes like Tivi, Idoma etc. with capital at Makurdi), Plateau  State (composed of small ethnic groups in that area, with capital at Jos), Hausa state (with capital at Zaria), Bornu State (with capital at Maiduguri), Niger state (with capital at Mina) and so on. Altogether we restructure Nigeria into twenty tribe based and economically viable states (that don’t depend on the central government for handouts to exist).

We must allow each state to have total control over its economy and politics.  Thereafter, the various states would come together in a real federation and give certain powers to the central government, such as power over the military and foreign affairs.

What I am talking about is done in the USA; read the United States Constitution.

There should be a National President, elected to serve five years, with two terms limit; a national unicameral legislature, elected for five years with six terms limit; a national judiciary headed by a supreme court, with justices serving no more than thirty years.

The central structure is replicated at the state levels. That is, a governor elected to serve five years with two terms limit;  a state unicameral legislature elected to serve five years with six terms limit; and a state judiciary headed by a state supreme court.

The structure is further replicated at the county level: county executive serving five years, two terms limit; county council elected for five years with six terms limit; and county magistrate courts.

The structure finally is replicated at the city and town levels: city/town mayor elected to serve five years with two terms limit; a city/town council elected to serve five years with six terms limit; a town/city court.

The constitution should clearly delineate that the preferred economic system is capitalism. However, society must serve certain functions that we all agree is best done collectively, even if doing so is economically inefficient, such as pay for education from elementary to university and for health insurance for all citizens (while allowing private schools and insurance companies to exist and compete with publicly operated ones).  Most other areas of the economy are to be left to individuals to fend for themselves.

If we restructure Nigeria as indicted above and have each state be in control of its resources and have its citizens pay federal taxes with which the federal government is run (say, each person pays a flat tax of 20% of his income annually to the federal government, each business pays similar corporate tax) we would have peace in Nigeria.

If, in addition, Nigeria establishes the rule of law where corrupt people are swiftly arrested, tried and put away (may be send them to the Sahel to irrigate it and plant trees there) we would finally embark on modernizing the country.

What is sketched here must eventually be done. We can do it now or kick the can down the road, but eventually it must be done.

If in doubt, please see what is going on in Britain. The English used brute force to unify the Islands called Brittan. But after several hundred years of domination by the English, the Scott, Irish and Welch want to have local self-governance.

Next year there will be a referendum for the Scots to decide whether to stay in Britain or not. I personally want them to stay in Britain but be given local autonomy.

The relevant point is that you cannot subjugate people forever; you can use force to keep the restive tribes of Nigeria together for a while but eventually they would explode and seek ethnic autonomy.

So, why don’t you, Mr. Jonathan, stop drinking too much; man-up and do what needs to be done, restructure Nigeria and make the country a viable political enterprise.

Wouldn’t you like to leave a legacy as the man who finally did the right thing for Nigeria? Do you really want to be remembered only as useless drunkard?  Is it really good enough to live imbibing alcohol and that is all you did with your life?

I often wonder for Africans like you; the universe gave them opportunity to do lasting good for their people, deeds for which future generations would remember and be grateful for; instead, all they do is eat, drink, and engage in endless sexing and stealing.

Oh, before I forget, African leaders pretend to be very important persons. Unknown to them is the fact that one is only important to the extent one does what serves public good; one is not important by merely rigging one’s self into political offices in which one does nothing good for the people.

Mr. Jonathan, although your past record is abysmal, you are a human being and hope is never given up on human beings; you can retrieve your presidency by doing something that we all would be proud of.

Since you called for a national conference I have offered you some pointers to where you need to go with that conference; but if you are merely playing games with folks, the joke is on you.

 Sincerely,

When you, your wife and the other useless bigwigs in your government are sick you go to Europe for treatment. Why do you do so? It is because you believe that the quality of medical treatment in Europe is better than in Nigeria; your action speaks louder than words.

If you had any kind of pride you would try to improve medical treatment in Nigeria instead of running to Europe whenever you have a head cold (how much does it cost Nigerians whenever you take your frequent medical tourism in Germany?); when those European medical experts of yours want you to die they could inject into your body slow acting poison! (If this makes you paranoid, it ought to, for your foolishness is beyond belief. You trust foreign doctors to take good care of you but not Nigerian doctors; shame on you.)

Seriously, do European leaders run to Nigeria for treatment?  Don’t you have shame or are you beyond shame? You are a nigger...a nigger is a black man who believes that only white folks can do anything right and that black folks cannot do anything right, in this case, your apparent belief that only white doctors can heal you but not Nigerian doctors.

In my opinion someone needs to whop you, flog your ass until you bleed so as to make you realistic instead of being deluded and thinking that you are what you are not.

I often wonder why the universe curses Africans with useless leaders like you. What evil did Africans commit to deserve the likes of you?

Mr. Jonathan, are you not aware that you are a nonentity who upon your death people run to the streets jubilant but not bereaved that they lost a man of the people? When John F. Kennedy died most Americans became depressed because they felt like they lost a caring leader.

Mr. Jonathan, do you think that if you died today any one would miss you; and if I may ask, miss you for what?

Or, perhaps, power has gotten into your head and you now believe that you would live forever? If so, I got bad news for you: every human being is born to die and you are a human being and will die and your body will rot and smell like feces. It is only what people do that makes the difference between them and dead animals.

Perhaps, you are liked by those around you, those who see you as the storekeeper that allows them to steal from the store as much as they could; as such, those people are afraid of losing you and having you replaced by a more conscientious leader who would check their stealing.

Mr. Jonathan is this really good enough for you? Are you so drunk that you do not know the difference between doing something that your country men would be proud of you for and merely occupying space at the presidential villa and hoping that folks have accepted the idea of rule of law and legal change of government so that no one takes your useless body out of that presidential house.

Thomas Jefferson, though responsible for American democracy nevertheless recommended that the people are entitled to chase off leaders who abuse their offices, elected or not. And to make this possible he wanted all citizens to have access to guns...the second amendment to the US constitution guarantees citizens right to guns so that they can form posse and chase useless presidents out of office.

Mr. Jonathan, it is above my head to understand why a fellow like you does not appreciate the need to do something good for our people. All over the world Africans are perceived as jokes.

I am sure that you know that if you, Mr., President, were to be seen walking the streets of certain parts of America, such as Bell Air and Beverly Hills (Los Angeles, California) you would be circled by white police men who assume that as a black man you are a potential thief.

If, you, Mr. Jonathan, given your dark color, are at a typical American department store security guards would keep an eye on you to make sure that you did not steal from the store; they assume that as a black man, regardless of your social position, you would steal (I suppose that you do not disappoint them if you do steal from the Nigerian government...black folks are supposed to be thieves and you gladly live up to that expectation!).

You are aware or should be aware that as a Nigerian if you are traveling in Europe or the Americas border immigration officers will harass you for they assume that you are (1) a smuggler, (2) a thief (3) is planning to stay in their country, fleeing from Africa’s endemic poverty; they do not want you to stay for they see you as unproductive and (4) a potential scammer who would take advantage of their open society and behind their backs scam them.

In the West, even in Asia, Nigerians, Africans and black folks in general are undesired persons and are treated as second class persons.

Why are they so maltreated? It is because Africa is perceived as a primitive place, and Africans seen as savages.

If Africa is perceived as civilized and developed do you think that folks all over the world would treat them as they are currently treated, as if they have no dignity and are not worthy of respect?

If the black man is treated like shit because he came from an undeveloped continent would it not stand to reason to expect African leaders to do their best to develop that much maligned continent?

Instead, you literally do nothing; to the best of my knowledge all you do is jet around the world as a tourist president. Do you see David Cameron, Angela Merkel, Hollander and Barack Obama always on the road, as you are? Those have to stay home and do some work; it is not enough for them to call themselves presidents or prime ministers of chancellors of their countries and show nothing in the department of accomplishment.

Mr. Jonathan, your lack of pride, pride that would have disposed you to work your behind off for your people’s good, amazes me. I am actually having a difficult time seeing you as a human being; a monkey is more like it!

Since most African leaders are doing what you are doing, nothing, is James Watson, of DNA fame correct in saying that Africans are so unintelligent that they cannot govern themselves correctly?

Mr. Jonathan, if you have a bachelor’s degree, as I am told that you do, I expect you to be, at least, average in intelligence and, as such, ought to be able to figure out what needs to be done to improve the downtrodden continent called the heart of darkness by the Polish writer, Joseph Conrad.

Mr. Jonathan, are you mentally retarded, as many white folks assume Africans to be? Africans average IQ is said to be 70, the cut off mark for mental retardation in the USA. So, are you a mentally retarded African and, as such, does not understand what needs to be done to drag Africa into the modern age?

Although I do not think that you are particularly sharp yet I do not think that you are mentally retarded. No one can graduate from a university with mental retardation, not even from Mickey-Mouse Nigerian universities where grades are sold and bought.  I am going to assume that you are, at least, average in intelligence and further assume that your do nothingness has nothing to do with mental retardation but with other reasons.

Mr. Jonathan, if it is true that you are an alcoholic (don’t be ashamed of it, after all President Boris Yeltsin of Russia was in your company) why don’t you start an Alcohol Anonymous meeting at the Presidential Villa; may be freedom from ogogoro would enable you to understand what needs to be done for Nigeria?

They say that a man’s antecedent behaviors tell us what he is doing to do in the present and future.  So far, you have done nothing that any one is proud of and building on that you must pardon me if I expect you to do nothing that anyone would be proud of in the future.  That is to say most people have written you off as unproductive and expect nothing good to come out of you!

Do you really like it that most people see you as clueless and expect nothing profound to come out of you? Are you really dumb, as they say that you are?

When Mr. Obasanjo’s government was besieged by his detractors he apparently tried to redirect attention from his troubles by calling for a national conference to discuss Nigeria’s future. Thus, for a few weeks or months Nigerians were reverted to talking about what Nigeria should be like. The conference came up with proposals and those were unceremoniously shelved and not paid attention to. In in the meantime, Obasanjo had bought for himself time to fool Nigerians.

I am told that you may be trying to do the same thing that Obasanjo did with your call for a National conference. I am told that you figure that if your predecessors could divert attention from their troubles by calling for a national talkfest that you might as well do it. Why not?

The conference would give the Nigerian intelligentsia diversion, something to jabber about; for a few months they would be preoccupied with talking about how Nigeria ought to be governed.   They would feel empowered talking about the structure of Nigeria but in the end you would file away their recommendations and not do something about them.

Is this your game plan, Mr. Jonathan? If so have you been reading Machiavelli lately?  Is this really what Nicolo Machiavelli taught you in his book, The Prince (assuming that you are practicing his recommendations to the prince)?

In case you do not know it, may I remind you that Machiavelli recommended duplicitous behavior for a purpose, not deceptiveness and trickery for the sake of it! He wanted to have Italy unified and was appealing to the leader of Florence to use devious means to outwit the other rulers of the various Italian city-states and in the process unify Italy. He was invested in his country’s welfare. In pursuit of national interest he felt that any means was justified (end justifies the means).

Otto Von Bismarck learned from Machiavelli and used iron, blood and trickery to unify Germany under his prince, the ruler of the Prussian state of Brandenburg (in 1871).

The point is that Machiavellian tricks are recommended for leaders who have nationalist goals in mind. They are not recommended to just divert attention from leaders’ troubles.

If you are a student of Machiavelli and call the national conference just to fool the people, Mr. Jonathan, you are fooling yourself, not other people.

As noted, you are currently perceived as one humongous nothing; no one can put his finger into what you have done. You are seen as ginormous pile of shit.

So, if you keep fooling the people and not doing anything for them you are merely fooling yourself. When you eventually leave office you would be considered good riddance.

Even the millions or is it billions of dollars that you allegedly squirrelled away could be recovered.  Remember that when you are out of office and come to, say, Britain some of us can request that you be arrested and tried for looting Nigeria (remember President Pinochet of Chile’s fate?). Mr. Jonathan that can be done and will be done; I can guarantee you that some of us resent that you are wasting our money and intend to make you pay a stiff price for your behavior. Expect a session in an international criminal court of law (you might want to talk to Charles Taylor of Liberia).

In case you are too daft to know it, this world is getting to a point where criminals in African politics can be checkmated everywhere else; the law may not work in Nigeria, Nigerian judges may be in the pockets of Nigerian politicians but that is not the case with British and American judges. (One can request that a US judge place a hold on all your wealth, that is, our stolen wealth stored in the USA.)

In the future there will be no place for Africa’s criminal leaders, the thieves that currently rule Africa to hide.

When Obasanjo set up his phony national conference in 2005 many of us submitted memoranda to it. I did. I made it clear as to what I believe needs to be done to make Nigeria a workable and viable enterprise.

You can fish out my twenty pages memorandum to that diversionary conference. I am not going to repeat what I said there here, especially as I suspect that you are merely wasting my time.

However, betting against the cynical belief that you are trying to fool Nigerians, again, let me summarize what I said in my submission to the Obasanjo tomfoolery.
