People like pidgin2 and Dat oda jobless guys has probably applied for u.s, u.k, Finland, Germany, spain , Portugal and even Korean visas and were not successful in any, so it'll be cruel to blame them. And to the distractors, The OP compared Nigeria to a zoo because he saw how smooth and easy life is in the u.s compared to Naija. If you think calling Nigera a zoo is unnecessary why don't you take a road trip from Lagos to plateau. Yes, the government has structured the NYSC program to help you during the service year but you need to think ahead and plan the way you will live your life when the service year is gone. Not making plans for your life after the service year is a huge mistake which you may never get chance to remedy.

We have, therefore, provided in this article things you can do in your service year that will boost your chances of securing job immediately after your service year in the Nigerian very competitive and scarce job market.

1. Learn new skills

Many employers are fast coming to terms that a good numbers of Nigerian graduates are unemployable. Why is this so you may ask? Most of these graduates have excellent result to show with good grades but they don’t seem to know what they are doing. It takes a good orientation and retraining on the part of the employer to get some of these graduates successfully employed and retained. Granted, reading an application can be very tedious. One can easily become jaded after reading so many applications. Some of them have instructions that read like they were designed by some wicked HR clerk intent on frustrating your life.

However, no matter how long the instructions and directions are, make sure you don’t ignore any of them. Some might seem innocuous, but be assured they were put there by the hiring manager for specific reasons.

Ignoring any instruction would give the hiring manager the impression you are not so hot on small details. So, to show the hiring manager you are a detail-oriented person, read the instructions more than once, and follow each of them as directed.

5. Networking is very important in your job search

This is an important point many job seekers never take seriously. Don’t just sit at home waiting for your phone to ring. People are out there giving out information to the right people concerning their application.

Yes, you need to follow up your application by telling people who might be able to put in a word or two in your favor. It won’t hurt your chances one bit.

If you don’t know anybody connected to the company, reach out to friends on any social media and ask. You would be surprised the sort of pointers you get from friends.

At the least, you would get the contact address of somebody who can be helpful. Best of all though, a friend or two in your network would know somebody important in the company.

6. Make sure you can be found online

Some hiring managers use social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest, to get an idea who the applicant is.

It is not enough to have an active Facebook or Instagram page though, you must make sure your activities on these sites portray you as a very serious-minded person.

You don’t want some curious hiring manager coming across weird posts or things not expected of a serious 9-5 person. So you better brush up your posts on your social media accounts that even your grandmother would be proud of.

Musical activism is simply the act of standing up for something greater and beneficial to the common good through one’s music. The lyrics, the sound, the very act of making the music itself could stand for defiance against the forces holding us down or back. The most outspoken musical activist of the Nigerian military regime was Fela Kuti.

In my humble opinion, there is no Nigerian musician who is as internationally renowned, or as notorious as Fela Anikulapo Kuti is. It could be said that he had defiance against authority in his blood as he was born to activist parents-his father being Rev. Israel Ransome-Kuti who was vital in establishing the Nigerian Union of Teachers and Students and his mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, an educator who led several revolutionary protests for the right of women including voting rights in 1947. Being raised in that background, I can see why he grew into such a rebel.

I recently listened to his Zombie and the depth of his defiance marvelled me. Those were fighting words, words that sparked riots, caused revolutions, and yet, seem so simple. He continually made himself a thorn in the side of the government, and they hated him for it.

And he did not do it with tasteless music either: his sound was both revolutionary and groundbreaking, becoming the inspiration for many other musicians who came after him. He was, perhaps, the father of the Afrobeat sound we take for granted today. He was learned, having attended Trinity College of Music. He was multifaceted-played the drum, the guitar and the piano.





The storming and destruction of his Kalakuta Republic commune by the military after the release of his Zombie album in 1976 were just some of the many times he was victimised and suffered for his music. He was beaten and jailed more than 200 times,

As young people today, what is our excuse? Every year score of albums are released in this country and all seem to be along the same themes: the mad rush for money, women and drugs. It is only a handful of Nigerian musicians today who are making meaningful music, and fear and the overwhelming majority mute their voices.

There is no medium of entertainment that reaches the masses like music does, the power to speak revolution to millions with one song is one that we should not take lightly, and one that our musicians need to start exploring again.

Our nation is on the brink, with bad leadership, economic hardship and security uncertainty. There is no better time for taking a stand, but not everyone is designed to protest in the streets carrying placards. Release that album you have been afraid to publicise. Push yourself. Be a voice. Let your music say the words that you cannot.

Who knows, maybe the next Fela is just being held back by doubt and fear.
