lexylaw09: HANG ABIOLA, OJUKWU TELLS ABACHA 🇳🇬 LAGOS, 1994: The history of Nigeria's political crisis took another dramatic turn when Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the former leader of Biafra, publicly advised General Sani Abacha to deal decisively with Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
Speaking in Kaduna at the launch of Nigeria: The State of the Nation and Windfall, published by Arewa House, Ojukwu accused Abiola of treason, alleging that he invited foreign sanctions against Nigeria and declared himself President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He dismissed June 12 as “an apparition” and called on Abacha to deal with Abiola, effectively seeking the death penalty. He reportedly said: “June 12 is not real; there is nothing like it.”
But Ojukwu's own history makes those words even more difficult to forget.
When Biafra was collapsing in January 1970, Ojukwu took all the foreign currency in the Bank of Biafra, left his people, and fled into exile in Côte d'Ivoire, where he was enjoying life with young girls. To his critics, it was the act of a coward who abandoned his people when the war he had led was finally lost. While ordinary Biafrans were left to face the consequences of the war, Ojukwu was thousands of miles away.
For about twelve years, he remained in exile.
Then President Shehu Shagari granted him a pardon in 1982, and Ojukwu returned to Nigeria after all he had looted was finished.
But the political reversal was extraordinary.
The former Biafran leader later entered Nigerian politics, joining the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), a party strongly associated with Northern political power. This was the same Ojukwu who had once presented himself as a defender of his people against the Northern establishment. In 1983, he contested the Senate election in Onitsha under the NPN and lost.
Now compare that journey with M.K.O. Abiola.
Abiola didn't lead his people to a war. He was a businessman and politician who entered the democratic process, won the June 12, 1993, presidential election according to the widely held historical view, and became the symbol of a struggle for the restoration of democratic government.
When the election was annulled, Abiola refused to disappear. He came home and stood up. He demanded his mandate.
He knew the military could arrest him. He knew his wealth could not save him. He knew the consequences could be devastating.
Still, he stayed.
His struggle helped make June 12 a lasting symbol of Nigeria's democratic aspirations and contributed to the political memory behind the democracy Nigerians enjoy today.
When Abacha arrested him in 1994, Abiola remained in detention rather than surrender the mandate he believed belonged to the Nigerian people.
And while this man was behind bars, Ojukwu was publicly telling Abacha to hang him. That contrast remains one of the most painful ironies of Nigerian history.
Ojukwu left when Biafra was collapsing and later returned through a presidential pardon.
Abiola stayed when his democratic struggle became dangerous.
Ojukwu became a shadow of his former political self.
Abiola became a martyr of Nigeria's democratic struggle.
One ran into exile when his war was lost. The other stayed home when his democracy was taken away.
One fought with guns.
The other fought with his voice, his political mandate, and his refusal to surrender.
And today, Nigerians enjoy a democratic government while remembering June 12 and the sacrifices of people like M.K.O. Abiola.
He came home. He stood his ground. He refused to surrender. And he paid the ultimate price.

The controversy surrounding claims of “looted funds in the boot of Anambra state official car” stems from a highly publicized incident in 2009, during Peter Obi’s tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
What happened: In June 2009, security operatives in Lagos intercepted an official Anambra State Government vehicle carrying ₦250 million in physical cash. Peter Obi was not in the vehicle. Reports identified the occupants as Peter Obi's media aide and other Peter Obi associates.
The explanation: The Obi administration explained that the money had been legitimately withdrawn to pay an automotive contractor, Mr. Ejike Onwusogbulu, who was involved in procuring official vehicles. The episode nevertheless remained a major controversy and has continued to be referenced in political discussions about Peter Obi’s record as governor.
