My choice would be the Yorkshire Pirlo but he is Leeds through and through, which makes it very difficult but not impossible. I can manage Phillips and Fred.

Philips is very good. He is very press resistant, can receive the ball on the half turn and find a forward pass, had excellent passing range, has good positional awareness. He can drop in the middle or beside the CBs to create a back 3 whilst allowing the fullbacks to push up, similar to Matic. His ability to progress the ball efficiently also mean Pogba and Bruno won’t have to drop deep too often to get on the ball. Pogba can play in his preferred LCM which obviously gives us more attacking threat. Pogba can also make those late runs into the box which can be very devastating for opponents. But like you said, Kalvin is a boyhood Leeds fan and it will be extremely difficult to pry him away from them. Only way we get him is if they are willing to sell and he actually wants to do more in his career trophy wise. Even at that, he may prefer to go to other big clubs rather than Leeds’ biggest rival.

Another player we can get that will give us similar or even better qualities than what Kalvin will give is Konrad Laimer. He is technically superior to Kalvin, he has an excellent footballing brain. He knows how to work in and out of space and his positioning and touches ensure that he gets extra time on the ball. His defensive awareness, tackling are also very good. He can play as a lone DM or in a two man midfield and he is also quite creative from deep. Also, he is a lot more obtainable than Phillips.

I was looking for Ndidi on the graph but didn't see him. His progression stat might not be great but defensively he is very solid.

Ndidi is in a world of his own when it comes to shielding the defence. He is up there alone on the top left. His defensive stats are really impressive.

One player that i am suspicious of is Declan Rice. Plays in a low block and has Soucek helping him choke all that space PLUS he looks slow to me. if we buy him it might be another Maguire experience.

I hope we are not even looking at rice. Buying him will be a mistake. I don’t trust his passing and he looks like he will be overrun every time we face a counter attack. I will even prefer Bissouma over Rice.

Shot on the edge of the box is not all you need from a midfielder. Mctominay is quite deficient in the basic aspects of midfield play.

That is a good graph but context is key. If a CM's team is usually under pressure and you have most players pinned back he won't have many passing options and his progression stat will most likely suffer.

Yes, I thought so too. Bissouma and Ndidi are obviously facing a lot more defensive situations per 90 than Fred and Mctominay. Bissouma is supposed to be higher on the defensive axis than Fred or Mctominay but he is lower. I think maybe it’s because his positioning is really good so he rarely has to make a tackle?

Ndidi on the other hand should have better progression because Leicester are not constantly under pressure from attacks. They usually keep possession except when they play against better teams. Ndidi should have better stats in terms of ball progression but his ball progression is proven to be quite poor.

Anyway, Somethings definitely cannot be captured by graphs.

And my problem with them is not just purely passing but their inability to take the ball on the half turn from the GK or defenders and initiate attack. The defenders now often ignore Fred when he comes short for the ball in front of the D while McTominay often just hides and refuses to make himself available in those areas.

Yes I agree with this. Every match day I am frustrated by their inability to receive the ball on the half turn and make a progressive pass. Anytime they attempt it, they always end up losing the ball because of a bad touch or a very poor pass. They always gift the opponent the ball under little or no pressure.

The other problem is that if we switch to a 4-3-3 neither of them can play the CDM role solo. If we switch to a 4-3-3 will you be comfortable with McTominay as solo CDM and Pogba and Bruno both pushed forward as 2 attacking midfielders or Fred alone as CDM and Pogba/Bruno pushed forward as attacking midfielders?

I am not even comfortable seeing any of them in the starting lineup. When I realize that we have no better option, my discomfort intensifies.

Both of them individually lack something a CDM needs to have but luckily for us they compliment each other SOMEWHAT. However we need to improve in that department in order to step up to the next level.

Afrodoc2, we have always complained that Fred and Mctominay are poor at progressive passing and we want them to be replaced by Ndidi or Bissouma. But the graph below shows that we may be mistaken? What do you think about this?

Fred and McTominay may not be good enough, but the graph shows that Bissouma or Ndidi may not be the answer.
