An Ilorin Magistrates Court on Thursday ordered the remand of Ibrahim Garba of Bani, Fulani camp, Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara in Federal Correctional Service for allegedly killing fellow herder with a machete.

The Magistrate, Mrs Zainab Usman, gave the order as the accused person faced a count charge of culpable homicide.

Usman adjourned the case until Dec. 24, for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Al-Hassan Jibrin, told the court that on Sept. 16, the case was transferred from Divisional Police Headquarters, Bani, Kwara to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Ilorin, for discrete investigation.

Jibrin said that on Oct. 29, Abubakar Mohammed of Bani, Fulani camp, Kwara reported that on the same date some Fulani boys fought each other in a Beer Parlour, situated at Bani, Kara market.

He said that during the fight, the accused person used a machete and attacked Shehu Mohammed on his neck, which eventually resulted in his death.

The prosecutor said that the accused person also attacked Abubakar Ahmed with a machete, while Ahmed, in turn, defended himself with a bottle before escaping from being killed by the accused.

Jibrin said that discreet investigation conducted led to the arrest of the accused person, who was identified by Ahmed to be the one who attacked him at the bear parlour.

He said that during the investigation, the accused person admitted to have taken alcoholic drink before going to the beer parlour, and a fight ensued between him and Abu, now at large.

The prosecutor said that during the fight, Abu attacked the accused person with bottle which caused few of his teeth to remove in the process.

Jibrin said that the accused person admitted to have attacked the deceased, Mohammed with machete on his neck, thinking it was Abu, and the attack led to Mohammed’s death.

He said that the offence was contrary to section 221 of the penal code.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the Senate yesterday rejected the outcome of the Bayelsa and Kogi states’ governorship election.

The Senators, led by the Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe, announced the caucus’ position at a news conference in Abuja.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – David Lyon and Governor Yahaya Bello-winners of last Saturday’s Bayelsa and Kogi governorship elections, respectively.

Other PDP Senators with Abaribe during the briefing include Senators Sahabi Yau, Matthew Urhoghide and Philip Aduda.

Abaribe said: “We totally reject the pronouncement made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and we are worried about the trend of what happened in those elections.

”The outright intimidation and killings of Nigerians during the elections; we know that those results were not a true reflection of what happened in the field.

”We are concerned that all the gains made by the PDP since 1999 seem to have been eroded by elections starting in Edo, Osun, Ekiti, and recently Bayelsa and Kogi, seem to have been lost.

”We are also worried about the killing of a Woman Leader in Kogi, even after results had been announced and winners declared.

”We call on the President to direct the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to immediately fish out the killers of the lady, Mrs. Acheju Abu, whose only offence is that she is a member of the opposition.

”What it tells us is that all of us who are members of the opposition are not safe. We hear that the police are launching an investigation, but it must not be swept under the carpet.”

He added that Senator Dino Melaye had also told him that his (Melaye’s) cousin was killed.

”If we leave the matter to continue to stay this way we don’t know what will happen in 2023,” Abaribe lamented.

The lawmaker added: “For INEC, all we have seen is a steady decline in the efficacy of our elections.

”We do not know where they got the figures they declared in Kogi and Bayelsa. We are in touch with our members in the various states and they have told us that the results did not reflect the voting pattern at the polling booths. We are totally resolved to confront what is going on in our electoral system.”

There is apprehension in the camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over an alleged plan to cancel the votes from Southern Ijaw for Saturday’s governorship election in the state, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt

Southern Ijaw, the stronghold of the APC, has the second largest votes, after Yenagoa, which is the state capital.

PDP could have an easy ride to victory, if the entire votes in Southern Ijaw is cancelled.

A source at the Bayelsa INEC told PREMIUM TIMES, Sunday afternoon, that Cyril Omorogbe, the INEC resident electoral commissioner in Delta State who supervised the election in Southern Ijaw, is pushing for the votes cancellation over allegations of rigging.

Mr Omorogbe is, however, being opposed by other INEC officials who participated in the conduct of the election in the area, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

None of the officials were willing to speak on record. The final collation of results at the INEC headquarters was yet to start at the time of this report.

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, on Saturday accused the APC of rigging the election in Southern Ijaw.

“As we are speaking, in this day and age, gun-wielding militia men, with the aide of security forces, have overrun hapless electoral officials,” Mr Dickson told reporters at his polling unit in Toru-Orua, Sagbama.

“Most of the electoral officials in Southern Ijaw, as we speak, are kidnapped and held hostage,” he said.

PREMIUM TIMES could not immediately reach INEC officials for their comment on the development.

Bayelsa has eight local government areas. There were 923,182 registered voters for the election but only 889,308 people collected their permanent voter’s card, according to INEC. Less than that number would have likely voted in the election.

Forty-five political parties contested the Saturday’s election, though the battle was a straight one between the Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Operation, AbdulMajeed Ali, has warned those planning to snatch ballot boxes during Saturday’s elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States to have a rethink as the police will not condone such behaviour.

“Anyone caught will not be spared and will not live to do that ever again,” Ali said.

Addressing a press conference yesterday ahead of Saturday’s elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States, Ali, who is overseeing the Kogi elections, said that the Inspector General had deployed enough personnel to adequately police the state and deal with any eventuality during the election.

“We have enough personnel and capacity to deal with anyone that tried to foment trouble on Saturday. Just watch, if anyone tries to snatch ballot box on Saturday, he will pay dearly for it.

“We are determined to provide the enabling environment for a peaceful election. We are tired of being held to ransom by Kogi and Bayelsa States every election period, we will put a stop to that this time around.”

He said that the force had undertaken a security threat assessment in both Kogi and Bayelsa States and have identified possible risks, geolocated trouble spots, and classified individuals and groups that could constitute security challenges to the process.
