The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, secured the conviction and sentencing of one Awojobi Ganiu, who parades himself as an Islamic cleric, to two years imprisonment for a N71m oil fraud before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos.

The convict was arraigned alongside his co-defendant, Adesanya Olufemi Paul, on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, on a four-count charge bordering on stealing and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N71, 000,000.00 from the complainant, Oluwatoyin Akinwole.

Akinwole alleged that, sometime in 2017, the defendants who claimed to be into crude oil business, approached her to join them in the business. Akinwole also alleged that she paid the defendants some amounts of money for the supply of crude oil.
According to her, the defendants neither repaid her nor supplied the crude oil. .

One of the counts reads: “That you, Adesanya Olufemi and Awojobi Ganiu, sometime in 2017, at Lagos, within the Ikeja judicial Division, with intent to defraud, fraudulently obtained the sum of N33, 617.000 (Thirty-Three Million, Six Hundred and Seventeen Thousand Naira) by false pretence, property of Mrs. Oluwatoyin Akinwole, on the representation that you are into crude oil business from which representation you knew was false."

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them, thereby setting the stage for their full trial.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Samuel Daji, called five witnesses and tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence by the court.

The first defendant, Paul, testified for himself, while the second defendant, Ganiu, approached the Commission for a plea bargain through a letter dated March 11, 2019.

Consequently, the charge relating to the second defendant, Ganiu, was amended.

CrimeFlood Kills Polytechnic Graduate In Delta by tainam(op): 5:11am On Oct 02, 2019
RESIDENTS of Asaba, the Delta State capital, were on Monday evening thrown into pandemonium as the ravaging flood swept away a polytechnic graduate identified as Chinedu Igboke.

The flood which resulted from a heavy downpour that lasted for some hours, killed the victim after he missed his step while controlling traffic at Shekinah Love Assembly Street along Okpanam road and fell into an uncovered paved gutter.

The deceased who was said to be in his thirties, according to sources hailed from Ebonyi State and was working as a security guard in a private school along Shekinah Love Assembly Street, off Ralph Uwechue Way, Okpanam Road, Asaba.

The source who pleaded anonymity said the gutter was filled with running water when Igboke fell into it, lamenting that the victim had already floated into the deep tunnel which channels storm water from the area into Anwai River before help could come.

Hear him: “When he fell into the water, he slammed his head against the concrete walls of the gutter. So he might have lost strength to swim against the tide before being floated helplessly into the tunnel”.

Saying the school authority where Igboke worked as a security guard, mobilised divers and swimmers to comb Anwai River in futile search of the body, he said; “we suspect that the body may be hanging somewhere along this tunnel because of blockade inside”.

He lamented that; “we went with them to the river but they could not recover his body”.

The National Youth Service Corps has said that it will allow female corps members, who are Muslims, to use white, shoulder-length hijabs for religious purposes.

The NYSC added that only three types of dressing used for different occasions would be acceptable for corps members.

The corps stated this in a document exclusively obtained by our correspondent in Abuja.

The document reads, “The modes of dressing for corps members are classified into three categories, which are used for different occasions. One, within the camp during the orientation programme, their normal attire, except otherwise directed, consists of a pair of white shorts with a white vest and white canvas shoes and socks.

“Two, for ceremonial purposes, the proper dressing is crested vest on top of a pair of Khaki trousers with a pair of jungle boots and socks with the trouser folded inside the socks. The belt and the Fez cap are to match.

“Three, for Man O’War activities at the camp and Community Development Service programmes, they are expected to appear in a jacket and trousers with the plain white vest inside, the jungle boot and the Fez cap, as well as a customised belt to match.

“On the use of the hijab, the NYSC does not issue the hijab as part of its uniform. However, the NYSC management allows corps members to use a white hijab that drops at shoulder level for religious purposes.”

The scheme in the document listed the complete dress kit issued to a corps member as: a set of Khaki trouser and jacket, one crested vest, a pair of jungle boot, two pairs of white shorts, two plain white vests, a pair of white canvas shoes, one Fez cap, two pairs of customised socks and a customised belt.

She wrote:
“Sincerely feel bad for. @symply_tacha . You guys will kill every inch of her self esteem and break her spirit. As a young girl seeing people especially men make fun her the way some of you are is really heart breaking . Imagine if she was your sister and people were treating her this way. Nobody is perfect , those of you maliciously attacking her in the name of dropping a comment or airing your views are no different from her . There’s no unpleasant smell that cannot be gotten rid of with the right skincare products so what’s the big deal? But she will never be able to get rid of the trauma this whole thing will cause her . Of all the addiction in the world, attention seeking seem to be worst of them all in this day and age . The way grown women and men have embarrassed themselves in the past 24 hours is beyond me. Too bad. I’m so scared for the world our kids are growing into. I would like to personally sponsor her to a full body makeover and aesthetic care with. Full set of makeup from and skin care product .. please get in touch with me let’s make you GLOW!!!

NYSCNYSC Pays N1m Insurance Compensation To Late Channels TV Reporter, Two Others by tainam(op): 5:11am On Sep 29, 2019
The National Youth Service Corps has paid one million insurance cover to the family of Precious Owolabi, the Channels Television reporter and serving corps member, who was shot dead during a bloody protest by members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja in July. The scheme has also processed and paid the families of two corps members-Okanlawon Ibrahim and Ibisaki Amachree who died during the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Amachree was killed during the February 23, 2019 presidential election in Rivers State while Okanlawon died in a boat mishap in Ondo while serving as an ad hoc work deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission during the House of Assembly elections. The NYSC, had in a letter dated July 30th and sighted by our reporter, directed the insurance company engaged by the federal government on behalf of the scheme to process one million insurance benefit to the next of kin of the late Owolabi.

The insurance benefit was paid to Beracah Owolabi, the next of kin to the late Owolabi, by the insurance company on behalf of the NYSC. Beracah confirmed the payment of the amount to our reporter through telephone in Abuja. She said: “Yes they have made the payment to us. The payment was done in August.”

However, a top source at the NYSC told our reporter that the Independent National Electoral Commission was yet to pay Okanlawon and Amichree their insurance benefits as stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) the scheme had with INEC. The source explained that INEC was supposed to provide a temporary insurance cover for corps members who served as ad hoc staff during elections. When our reporter contacted the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Festus Okoye, last week Sunday to find out if the commission have processed any insurance benefit for the slain corps members, he promised to get back to the reporter on Tuesday.

Also, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, in a Whatsapp message, only said: “The commission has an insurance package for the corps members serving as Ad-Hoc staff during elections and we have a history of responding compassionately when corps members or any ad-Hoc staff is injured or killed. Also, INEC sent a delegation led by Mr Patrick Uzoka, an Electoral Officer to condole with the family of Mrs Ibisaki Amachree who lost her life in Rivers State during the February 23 Presidential Election.”
