Health / What You Should Know About Fat Soluble Vitamins by taiye4real: 2:57pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
What are Vitamins? Vitamins are essential micro-nutrients your body needs in small amounts for various roles throughout the human body. Vitamins are divided into two groups: water-soluble (B-complex vitamins and C vitamins) and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K). Unlike water-soluble vitamins that need regular replacement in the body, fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissues, and are eliminated much more slowly than water soluble vitamins. What are Fat-Soluble Vitamins? The fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are stored in the body for long periods of time and generally pose a greater risk for toxicity when consumed in excess than water-soluble vitamins. Eating a normal, well-balanced diet will not lead to toxicity in otherwise healthy individuals. However, taking vitamin supplements that contain megadoses of vitamins A, D, E and K may lead to toxicity. The body only needs small amounts of any vitamin. Read more on PelMedic. |

Reading can be boring, everyone knows that! After spending hours starring at that book, for whatever reason, you may end up feeling dull. Social reading can help bring you back to life quickly, by being social about the very book or subject you are reading, and communicating with people of like minds throughout the world. “Social reading,” as a concept, is actually quite simple: people want to share what they have read with other people and receive feedback about their thoughts and ideas. Health / What Is The Best Time Of Day To Take Vitamins? by taiye4real: 11:17pm On Feb 08, 2016 |
When to take a supplement depends largely on what kind you’re taking. But make sure you really need to take one in the first place. If you’ve ever wondered when you should be taking your vitamins — Breakfast? Lunch? Whenever you remember to? — depends on the type of vitamins. If you’re talking about a multivitamin (one vitamin that combines lots of other vitamins into one), then the best time of day is usually the morning, with your first meal. That’s because vitamins are a synthetic substance and are best absorbed in your body when they are taken with food and its naturally occurring vitamins. Taking them in the morning allows for the best chance that they’ll be absorbed into your system with the food that you eat all throughout the day.... PelMedic |

Health / Who's Smarter, Night Owls Or Early Birds? by taiye4real: 2:20am On Feb 08, 2016 |
Are you a morning person, someone who likes to get up early to tackle your to-do list? Or are you someone whose creative juices don’t even get flowing until after dinner? It turns out that your preferences might affect your lot in life. A new study from researchers at the University of Madrid evaluated the sleeping patterns of 1,000 teenagers and compared this information with the teens’ scores on intelligence tests and their grades. What they learned was that while early birds may get the worm — and better grades — night owls had the kind of intelligence linked to higher-paying jobs down the road. For the study, researchers classified the teens as either morning or night people based on sleeping patterns. About 25 percent of the teens were morning people, one-third were night owls and the rest had natural rhythms that fell somewhere in between. Next, they looked at each teen’s school records and asked them to take additional tests to measure intelligence. The teens who liked to stay up late performed better on the intelligence tests than the early risers, particularly in areas of inductive reasoning, a skill often considered a good overall measure of later job earnings. However, the night owls had grades in school that were about 8 percent lower across the board than their early rising peers. Researchers think this might be because most tests are administered first thing in the morning, when night-preferring teens aren’t yet at their peak. The Madrid study confirmed earlier research showing that night owls may be more creative and intelligent than their morning-centric peers. One possible theory for the connection is that, from an evolutionary perspective, people who like to stay up late are deviating from the norm (when all activities centered around daylight) and thus might have more inquisitive minds. www.pelmedic.com |

Health / Astrazeneca Cancer Drug Presents Breakthrough by taiye4real: 1:47am On Feb 08, 2016 |
Early trials of an AstraZeneca cancer drug have indicated the potential for “combination therapies” to widen the range of patients who can benefit from new breakthroughs in oncology. These findings emerged from a study of durvalumab, AstraZeneca’s leading contender in the hotly-contested field of “cancer immunotherapies” — treatments that work by turning the body’s immune system against tumours. Immunotherapies have been heralded as the biggest advance against cancer for decades — but only a relatively small proportion of patients have so far been shown to benefit from them. Data from the AstraZeneca study published over the weekend will raise hopes that immunotherapies can be made more widely effective by combining them with one or more other complementary cancer drugs. According to the study, combining durvalumab with another AstraZeneca drug called tremelimumab showed potential against so-called PD-L1 negative tumours, which have so far proved largely resistant to immunotherapies. First generation of immunotherapies from Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb have targeted PD-L1 positive tumours but only between a quarter and a third of cancer patients are diagnose with that kind. This has left a much bigger potential market for AstraZeneca, Roche and other companies seeking to develop combination therapies for patients with PD-L1 negative cancer. Data from the study of durvalumab and tremelimumab showed a similar level of response between patients with PD-L1 positive and negative tumours — 22 and 29 per cent respectively. This compares with a response rate of 5 per cent among PD-L1 negative patients treated with durvalumab alone. “The results suggest that this combination has potential as a treatment option for patients with PD-L1 negative tumours whose needs are not addressed by currently available therapies,” said Scott Antonia of the Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida, which was involved in the trial. This latest study, published in The Lancet Oncology, adds detail to initial findings revealed last November. It involved 26 patients taking doses of durvalumab and tremelimumab who were chosen by AstraZeneca for a larger late-stage trial which will determine whether the product reaches market. However, the small number of patients and the fact that a majority of them still failed to respond shows that there is still a long way to go before immunotherapies become the “wonder drugs” that some experts believe will make cancer a manageable condition akin to HIV. Pascal Soriot, AstraZeneca chief executive, has put cancer immunotherapy at the centre of efforts to revive the company as older drugs lose patent protection. He has said that, while Merck and BMS are ahead in a market estimated to be worth $35bn a year within a decade, AstraZeneca’s focus on combination therapies would prove an advantage in the long run. “The competition is all happening in the PD-L1 positive box, which is only a quarter of the market,” he said last week. “The other box is still very open.” AstraZeneca recently scrapped plans to seek regulatory approval for durvalumab on its own, in favour of focusing on the combination with tremelimumab. “We were always behind in monotherapies,” said Mr Soriot. “Combinations was always our commercial focus.” AstraZeneca has forecast peak annual sales of $6.5bn for durvalumab, making it an important part of Mr Soriot’s goal to increase group revenues by three-quarters to $45bn by 2023. The drug is part of new class of drugs called “checkpoint inhibitors” which aim to bypass the blockades used by cancer cells to avoid detection by the immune system. www.pelmedic.com |
Health / Keeping Yourself Safe From Lassa Fever by taiye4real: 6:15pm On Jan 28, 2016 |
Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever which has been endemic in the West African subcontinent since it was first discovered in 1969 in a town called Lassa in Borno state. It reportedly affects about 500000 persons in this region on an annual basis, leading to an estimated 5000 deaths. In fact, the current outbreak of the deadly virus has led to 72 deaths across 17 states of Nigeria and threatens to continue to spread if an aggressive response is not mounted early enough. Unfortunately, however, the public knows very little about this virus hence the need for extensive enlightenment media campaigns geared towards educating the general public on the best measures and practices to adopt in order to ensure that they stay safe from the virus and curtail its spread. Furthermore, it’s important to note that no vaccine is available yet to provide immunity against Lassa virus. Hence, the only option now is to limit your exposure to infected humans as well as rodents which have been identified as the natural reservoir of the virus. Highlighted below are some ways to keep yourself safe from Lassa virus 1. Keep foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers It’s been discovered that multimammate (Mastomys) rats that get infected with Lassa virus never become ill. Rather, they shed the virus in their urine and faeces which can easily contaminate exposed foodstuffs in the house. Hence, it is advised that you keep your foodstuffs safe in rodent-proof containers. Also, if you suspect any foodstuff has been contaminated by rat secretions, promptly discard it safely. 2. Make use of rodent traps The widespread distribution of the Mastomys rats in West Africa makes it rather difficult, if not impossible to completely eliminate them. However, we can significantly reduce rodent populations within and around our homes by making use of traps. 3. Practise good hygiene The importance of good hygienic practices in keeping Lassa fever at bay cannot be overemphasized. Ensure that you wash your hands as well as household utensils regularly with soap and water to kill the virus just in case it has contaminated any of the surfaces. Ensure that you always keep your house clean and tidy. Plus, you need to make sure you wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them. 4. Properly dispose of household wastes Household garbage constitutes a veritable breeding ground for rats because it’s a very good and consistent food source for them. Hence, if you carelessly dispose of refuse and other wastes near your house, it is an open invitation to rodents and by implication, Lassa virus. 5. Practise strict barrier nursing This applies to families and close contacts of infected persons as well as healthcare givers who are saddled with the responsibility of taking care of sick Lassa victims. They need to apply extra infection control measures such as the use of hand gloves, face masks, goggles and long-sleeved gowns to prevent contact with blood or other body fluids of infected patients. In the same vein, samples obtained from such patients must only be processed by trained staff in suitably equipped laboratories. 6. Promptly report any suspected case Once you notice anyone around you with symptoms of Lassa fever like prolonged fever lasting more than 2 days, cough, sore throat, chest, back or abdominal pain, vomiting, facial swelling and bleeding from the nose, mouth or ears, promptly take them to the nearest hospital from where they can be referred to tertiary centres if a diagnosis of Lassa fever is suspected. As soon as any case of Lassa fever is confirmed, the appropriate authorities must be notified. www.pelmedic.com |
