LiteratureLetter To The Less Privileged, From Sassynigerian by TalkItalk(op): 5:25pm On Dec 08, 2017
www.anothernigerian.com

Hello darlings,

How are you all doing?. It’s a new month and I pray it brings you good tidings. Even though December doesn’t look as perfect as it used to be in times past, be positive and try to make the best out of it.

It’s the season of love. In as much as we try to preach and spread love, most persons may still feel some sort of neglect due to the disability they were born with or those they developed along the way. Probably your life was normal and everything seemed great, until that day when everything changed. There are days you wished you weren’t even conceived yet, maybe your fate would have been different. There are always people who make silly jokes about your condition and it gets under your skin.

Now,being disabled is not a crime, a sin or an abomination, it’s your attitude towards it that that makes it awful. The society has made you believe that you deserve pity and alms from all and sundry like it’s your right. Because you lost an arm or both, a leg, or you are confined to a wheel chair due to a spinal injury for the rest of your life, it doesn’t make you inferior to anyone. Some of this “complete humans” may not even be a match to your IQ and that is your power. You sit at a corner comparing yourself to others, sometimes you created an idol out undeserving people. Blaming the government, your parents, your nurse will never get you out of your condition. You have to let go and let God. Let go of all that pain and rage in 2017.

You have to stop asking the WH questions, what if?, why me?. Begin to embrace your disability, see it as an opportunity(it could’ve been worse). Put that IQ to use, start thinking of another approach. Start an online or even a road side business. It’s the little beginnings that matter. Let people support your little effort willingly. With positivity comes healing, it might not be physical but you will feel an uplifting in your soul. Become a source of joy and help to that younger person around. Join a support group if any exists in your city. Always spread love and cultivate the habit of giving. We can all win together.

I see you, you are important, you are dearly loved!

Yours sincerely,
SassyNigerian.

PoliticsBreaking News: Ifeanyi Ubah Declares Support For Apga Ahead Of November 18 Polls by TalkItalk(op): 3:42pm On Nov 04, 2017
@anothernigerian

The former PDP man in his speech said
To my steadfast supporters and umu nnem,
Today marks a turning point in my political life as I take a giant leap into that which will spur the advancement of my dream for an ideal and prosperous Anambra State.
It has been a bumpy ride considering where I started from, the rough roads I have been through and challenges I have faced in search for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Having done so much politically over the years by virtue of my avid belief in adding value to the people of Anambra State and in appreciation to God for his mercies on my life bearing in mind my modest background being the Son of a Teacher, it has become imperative to take stock of my contributions, assess my strengths/weaknesses and take advantage of the opportunities available to me which would be in tandem with my drive to further the course of the Ndi Igbo.

As part of my vision and passion to advance the cause of my people, I have spent the last 5 years of my life making concerted efforts through human capital development and the rechanneling of my investments in oil and gas, media, sports, construction amongst others to my home state in a bid to empower the youths and contribute my quota to building a robust state economy. During this period, I have had laughs and good times with my people while also suffering betrayals and deceit from friends and allies alike. Be that as it may, there is a limit to what I can achieve in my private capacity as it is my staunch belief that the number of lives one can touch while occupying the seat of power far outweighs the number that can be touched in one's private capacity. I have been immensely blessed by God and as such, I do not consider politics as beneficial except that it provides me with the channel to which I can achieve my ultimate aim of sincere service to Ndi Anambra.

Incidentally and regrettably, despite several efforts to expand the horizon of lives one can touch using the seat of power, I have not been lucky enough to achieve my goal. Bearing in mind the number of politicians that have ended up worse off having encountered not even up to half of what I have suffered in politics, I will continue to thank God immensely for affording me the wherewithal to continually put food on my table as well as that of others. I strongly believe that the route I have journeyed through up until now was ordained by God to avail me the requisite experience which as we all know, is the best teacher. My next steps are hinged on His divine direction and I am happy and contented to follow as he leads. I will continue to champion people-oriented programmes and the cause of Ndi Igbo with the fullest assurance that God will answer our prayers soon.

For those who believe I should quit politics in my best interest owing to all that I have suffered in the hands of politicians, I must say thank you for your care and kind advice. I have taken note of your sincere counsel. However, I believe that the end will justify the means as I am bold, strong, courageous and determined to take Anambra State to the next level.

Unfortunately, having spent most of my political life working assiduously for the PDP and in consideration of the unfair and callous treatment meted out on me despite my several pleas to the party hierarchy, I have decided to call it a day with the PDP. The political backstabbing has left a sour taste in my mouth and I have come to the conclusion that my service to the PDP is the price I have to pay if I am to succeed in my quest to serve my people. At this juncture, I have left the battle for the Lord.

In view of the above, I wish to state unequivocally that I have taken a position to fight for the sustenance and continued relevance of my state and the Igbo tribe. I am a very strong and proud Igbo man who is passionate about the protection of the Igbo name and the pride attached to it. I have dedicated myself to ensure that "Afa Igbo ama efu".

Being an indigene of Nnewi, home to notable Nigerians like General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba Nnewi), HRH Prince Nwafor Orizu, Dr. Chuchu Okongwu, Chief Cletus Ibeto, Dr. Ikem Okeke, HRH Igwe Kenneth Orizu amongst a host of others and one of the biggest industrial cities in Nigeria, I have taken a position to champion the cause of the Igbo race by striving to ensure the growth and sustenance of the only party bequeathed to us by the Great Ikemba Nnewi, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). I have decided to join the struggle to ensure that our legacy lives on as we must uphold the identity of the Igbos as handed down to us by Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu.

While APGA might be seen as a regional party, there is no doubt in my mind that we can make it a force to reckon with nationally in the mould of Alliance for Democracy (AD) that metamorphosed into Action Congress (AC), then later transformed to Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and now the All Progressives Congress (APC) which currently leads at the centre.

Based on this and my conscience, in truth, before God and man, I have made up my mind and resolved to join and support the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). My political journey which started from APGA has taken me to two other political parties, Labour Party and then PDP. I am extremely glad to be back to where I belong. Nke a bu nke anyi! I want to assure party faithfuls that I have returned to add immense value to the party and grow the party with the experience I have gathered over the years in politics.

To mark my new political sojourn, I will be committing myself to APGA during this election and subsequent elections by organising a rally tagged AFA IGBO EFUNA which would underscore my entrance into the party. This rally is scheduled to take place on the 13th of November 2017 at the Ifeanyi Ubah Games Village, Ozubulu/Nnewi. Furthermore, I will commence the sensitization of my friends, foes, allies and all Anambrarians from Sunday, 5th of November, 2017 by 8PM through Authority 91.9FM radio and live stream youtube channel on the factors that informed my resolution and the need for Ndi Anambra, especially those from Anambra South to key into the vision and support APGA. This process will last throughout the campaign period as allowed by INEC.

I wish to thank all my supporters who have stood by me patiently and persistently throughout my political travails. Your prayers and perseverance are the reasons we are where we are today. To those who feel aggrieved and disappointed as a result of my choice, I wish to tender an unreserved apology to you all as I reassure you that my decision is a product of a well-thought-out assessment of the political landscape as well as fervent prayers.

May I also use this medium to specifically express my sincere gratitude to my precious wife and lovely children for their ceaseless prayers, support and encouragement so far irrespective of the trials and tribulations. You all have been an endless source of strength and inspiration. I love you all.

To my spiritual fathers, elders and true friends who have also been praying for me while rendering their informed advice, I am very thankful for everything you have done for me. May God reward you all in his infinite mercies.

For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state that while I would gladly render my sincere advice to the party on the line it should tow nationally, I will be lending my full support to whichever party they deem fit nationally in a bid to achieve equity in the event that my party declines to produce a candidate for national elections.

This election is not a do or die affair and as such, I wish to call on the Federal Government, State Government, INEC, relevant security agencies, political parties and my fellow Anambrarians to join hands in ensuring that the elections are conducted in a free and fair manner, devoid of violence and rancour.

APGA bu nke anyi. Afa Igbo ama efu na-aka anyi!

Thank you and God bless you all.

Long live APGA!
Long live Anambra State!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

PoliticsJunaid Mohammed Raises Alarm Over New Sgf, Says He Is Babachir's First Cousin by TalkItalk(op): 12:09pm On Oct 31, 2017
A member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic, Dr Junaid Muhammed,

has revealed that the newly appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, is a first cousin to Babachir Lawal.
“Before you begin to celebrate the appointment of Boss Mustapha as the new SGF, do you know that he is in fact, Babachir Lawal’s first cousin? This is a continuation of the cronyism and nepotism the Buhari-led administration has become infamous for,” Muhammed told one of our correspondents.

But even as many Nigerians lament the failure of the President to direct further actions on the sacked officials, the All Progressives Congress has said Buhari’s sacking of the two officials couldn’t have come at a better time than now.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said, “Few days ago, when the President directed the dismissal of Abdulrasheed Maina, some people said that was right but what about the suspended SGF, BD Lawal? But we as a party said look, the President is the only person who has all the information. All of us can only have one side of the story or the other.

“But the President by the virtue of the position he occupies is the only one who has all the information and he would do what is necessary at the right time, now we have been vindicated and it shows that the President has not in any way waived his commitment not to tolerate corruption at any level no matter who is involved.”

Similarly, the Arewa Consultative Forum applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for sacking Lawal and Oke. In its reaction to the development, the ACF through the National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, said, “The action taken by President Buhari on the report submitted by the Osinbajo Committee that investigated the suspended SGF and the DG NIA is appropriate and timely.”

SportsInjury Rules Out Victor Moses As Rohr Names Squad To Face Argentina, Algeria by TalkItalk(op): 7:03am On Oct 31, 2017
Chelsea star, Victor Moses is the most conspicuous absentee in Coach Gernot Rohr’s list of players for Nigeria’s last World Cup qualifying game against Algeria and the international friendly with Argentina in Russia next month.

The Chelsea right wingback, who has been nursing a hamstring injury for over three weeks, has not trained with the London club since October 14 when he was inured in a game against Crystal Palace.
But he seems to be getting back to fitness, although not enough to play in Chelsea’s Champions League game against Roma today.
In the list released by Rohr are three debutants, Tyrone Ebuehi, a defender, Chidiebere Nwakali and Francis Uzoho. Three other players are on standby, including former super regular, Kenneth Omeruo.
kipper John Mikel Obi leads the squad that also includes his deputy, Ogenyi Onazi, thus rubbishing the rumour that Rohr would use the game against Algeria to try out players that have not had a look in into the side.
The three goalkeepers in the squad are Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi and Francis Uzoho, while the defenders are William Ekong, Abdullahi Shehu, Tyronne Ebuehi, Leon Balogun, Uche Agbo, Chidozie Awaziem and Olaoluwa Aina.
The midfield has Mikel John Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, John Ogu, Mikel Agu, Chidiebere and Nwakali.
To contest for starting shirts in attack are Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Odion Ighalo, Henry Onyekuru and Anthony Nwakaeme.
Joining Omeruo in the standby list are Alhassan Ibrahim and Russian-Nigerian, Brian Idowu.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said yesterday that all the invited players are expected to arrive in a camp in Morocco next week Monday before the delegation flies to Constantine on November 9.
It added that the Super Eagles will fly to Krasnodar, Russia from Constantine on November 11 on a 45–seater chartered aircraft for the international friendly against Argentina, which will hold on November 14.

PoliticsPdp Calls On Nass To Start Buhari's Impeachment Process After Babachir's Sack by TalkItalk(op): 6:49am On Oct 31, 2017
After many months of dillydallying, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday sacked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal, and the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayo Oke.

Buhari said the decision to sack the duo, who were ‎earlier suspended over allegations of fraud levelled against them, followed his acceptance of the recommendation of the panel to terminate their appointment.
And swiftly, the president announced the appointment of Mr. Boss Mustapha as the new SGF. The appointment takes immediate effect.
A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, yesterday said the president also approved the setting up of a three-member panel to, among other things, look into the operational, technical and administrative structure of the NIA and make appropriate recommendations. The three-man committee included the National Security Adviser (NSA) Babagana Monguno, and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who headed the Presidential Committee which investigated the allegations against Lawal and Oke, had told newsmen that only President Buhari would determine the fate of the duo.
Osinbajo who gave the indication after he submitted the report of the panel in August was, however, silent on the recommendations in the two-volume documents he made available to Buhari in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Lawal was grilled by the panel over the N220 million meant for the welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in North-East while Oke was suspended over the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, to which NIA has made a claim.
In December last year, the Senate called for the resignation of Lawal after its committee on the humanitarian crisis in the North-East indicted him for corruption.
There was public outcry over the refusal of the president to take action on the resolution of the upper legislative chamber.
In its reaction to the sacking of Lawal and Oke yesterday, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on the National Assembly to immediately initiate impeachment processes against President Buhari for allegedly violating his oath of office through the twisting of the law against perceived opponents and in favour of his supporters.
In a statement by its spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, in Abuja, the PDP expressed dismay that the president could simply replace Lawal with Mustapha without subjecting him to prosecution.
“The statement on the sack of Lawal and Oke is a slap on the face of Nigerians. It is an insult to the-collective intelligence of our people who have waited patiently for the president’s reaction on the humongous act of corruption by two of his principal aides and this is totally unacceptable.
“First, we had disagreed with the president last year when he decided to set up the panel to investigate the matter because we thought that was the wrong course of action to take. Ordinarily, cases of corruption or alleged cases of misappropriation of funds are supposed to be referred to institutions that are saddled with the responsibility to investigate and prosecute such matters which is the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the EFCC if there is any prima facie case against them.”
In the statement, the PDP lamented that “it appears not all animals are equal under the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. Some people are treated with kid gloves while others, particularly those in opposition are subjected to all manner of harrowing experiences. One of the senators of the APC, Shehu Sani of Kaduna State succinctly put the matter when he said that this administration uses deodorant to fight corruption when it comes to some APC members and President Buhari’s kitchen cabinet and insecticides when it involves members of the opposition and those in the National Assembly.”
PDP lamented that “it took the president almost one year to attend to this matter while the culprits were having a field day at home and enjoying themselves. Whereas, in the case of the opposition, especially the PDP members, even when the evidence is flimsy, they will be visited with multiple harassment and intimidation for months and weeks without proper trial.
“We cited the case of Sambo Dasuki who has been in detention for over two years and running. Even when many courts in Nigeria and the ECOWAS Court have ordered his release, the president has fragrantly disobeyed these court orders which again are a violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is an impeachable offence. The president cannot just sack Oke and Lawal and expects us to be clapping for him.”
Condemning alleged disregard for the rule of law, the PDP said: “We believe that we are operating under a democracy and a constitution that governs our affairs. To have subjected these people to different sets of rule and treatment is totally unacceptable. Nigerians are the same under the law and Lawal and Oke should not be tried by the presidency while others are hounded by the EFCC and ICPC.
“These actions of Mr. President are therefore a breach of his oath of office which he swore to defend. It is also a violation of the constitution because he swore to be fair and just to all Nigerians without any discrimination whatsoever. The action of the president is a gross violation of his constitutional oath and therefore constitutes a veritable ground for impeachment.”
PDP described the sudden sacking of the SGF and the NIA boss as a consequence of the Abdulrasheed Maina saga. “Up till now there’s no answer to the pertinent questions we have asked on the Maina saga. The government cares less about the feelings and opinions of Nigerians. This kind of arrogance is unprecedented in the history of this county. We again call for the arrest and investigation of the two ministers involved in the return of Maina into the civil service, that is, the Minister of Interior, Bello Dambazau and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Malami.”
At press time yesterday, a caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was underway at the Presidential Villa, Abuja with President Buhari in attendance. Others at the meeting were leadership of the National Assembly, APC governors, state chairmen and chieftains of the party from across the country.
The agenda was not known, but sources said it was not unconnected with the situation in the party that has thrown it into disarray.

Foreign AffairsSpanish Government Gives Sacked Catalan Officials Few Hours To Vacate Office by TalkItalk(op): 12:24pm On Oct 30, 2017
The Spanish government has given dismissed ministers and officials of the regional Catalan government "a few hours" to take their possessions from their former offices.

Madrid is assuming control over Catalan institutions on Monday after dismissing the regional government on Friday, hours after the Catalan parliament voted for secession. However, the Catalan government intends to go to work.
"We want to recover normality with the utmost discretion and with the principle of minimum intervention," Juan Ignacio Zoido, Spain's interior minister and a member of the right-wing People's Party (PP), said on Monday.Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police force, informed ministry workers that they were ordered to escort ex-counsellors who intended to collect their things. If the ex-counsellors do not leave their posts, the Mossos are to issue a statement to the authorities which would, presumably, lead to charges of "usurpation of functions".Spanish law says a person is committing a crime if they undertake the role of a public official without title or legitimate cause. The charge carries a punishment of one to three years in prison. The deposed Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont had yet to arrive to the government palace in Barcelona's Gothic quarter on Monday morning.Catalan media reports that the Mossos first informed Josep Rull, a functionary of the Department of Environment and Sustainability, about the charge after he arrived to his ministry at around 10:00am local time.Puigdemont's Democratic Party of Catalonia is holding a meeting and the dismissed president is expected to be there.Former Vice-President Oriol Junqueras has not been seen at the Ministry of Economy, which he headed before his dismissal.A functionary of the Ministry of the Economy, who asked his name not be used, confirmed to Al Jazeera Junqueras had yet to arrive and that the ministry has been dismissed without severance pay. While the Spanish government has dismissed ministers and high-ranking officials, it does not have the power to dismiss the Catalan parliament. Instead, regional elections have been called for December 21.Activists have gathered outside ministries to protect the former functionaries. No clashes between police and demonstrators have been reported. It remains to be seen how demonstrators will respond to the Catalan police force's consent to orders from Madrid. The Mossos have become a symbol for many in Catalonia, due to their perceived resistance to orders from Madrid and their refusal to commit violence on October 1, the day of the disputed independence referendum. The former head of the Mossos, Josep LLuis Trapero, was dismissed over the weekend. He reminded his subordinates of their duty to respect their superiors.

Foreign Affairs2018: Saudi Women To Be Granted Permissions Into Sports Stadium by TalkItalk(op): 11:06am On Oct 30, 2017
Saudi Arabia will allow women to attend sports events in stadiums for the first time from next year, officials say.

Families will be able to enter the stadiums in three major cities - Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
It is another move towards giving more freedom to Saudi women, who face strict gender segregation rules, and follows the historic lifting of a driving ban.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is leading a major drive to modernise Saudi society and boost the economy.
Saudi Arabia's sports authority said that preparations would start in the three stadiums so they can be "ready to accommodate families from early 2018".
Restaurants, cafes and monitor screens would be set up inside the stadiums as part of the changes, it added. Up until now, the venues have been men-only areas.
The reforms are in line with a wide-ranging plan announced by 32-year-old Prince Mohammed to bring social and economic change to the oil-dependent kingdom, known as Vision 2030.

Last month, a royal decree said that women would be allowed to drive for the first time from next June. Concerts are once again being held and cinemas are expected to return soon.
On Wednesday, Prince Mohammed said that the return of a "moderate Islam" was key to his plans to modernise the country.
He said that 70% of the Saudi population was under 30 and that they wanted a "life in which our religion translates to tolerance".
But analysts warn that the plan is not without risks.
The kingdom faced a backlash from conservatives on social media after allowing women to participate in National Day celebrations in Riyadh's King Fahd Stadium for the first time last month.
Despite the recent announcements, women still face severe restrictions in the country, which enforces a strict form of Sunni Islam known as Wahhabism.
Women have to adhere to strict dress codes and must not associate with unrelated men. If they want to travel, work or access healthcare they must be accompanied by - or receive written permission from - a male guardian.

BusinessRe: It Is More Profitable To Invest In Agriculture, ict Than Oil & Gas - Rainoil Boss by TalkItalk(op): 7:27am On Oct 30, 2017
CC: lalastica, Mynd44
TalkItalk:
A major player in the downstream segment of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and Managing Director of Rainoil Nigeria Limited, Engr. Gabriel Ogbechie,

has made a strong case for massive investments in the agricultural sector of the nation’s economy by Nigerians, saying that there are huge returns in the sector.

Noting that investing in agriculture, ICT, real estate and other potent non oil sector are the major ways to reignite and grow economies globally, Ogbechie, who spoke as a guest lecturer at the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Economic and Community Development Lecture held at the Westwood Hotel, Ikoyi, urged Nigerians to do more in the sector, which he sees as the next economic boom.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Exploring Investment Opportunities in Nigeria’, the Rainoil boss, who is also a huge investor in agriculture, said, “with a population of about 193 million people, which accounts for about 2.53 per cent of the world population, Nigeria presents a very large market for food and agricultural products.”

He observed that Nigeria’s food import bill for 2016 stands at about $22 billion (N6.9tn), which represents about 93 per cent of the 2017 budget, which he described as unsustainable if the economy must grow, hence Nigerians need to now invest heavily in the sector to tap into the huge opportunities therein and support the government’s efforts to take our economy to greater heights.
Available statistics also show that Nigeria is blessed with an estimated 84 million hectares of arable land, representing 77.7 per cent of her total land area, out of which a far less than 50 per cent is currently cultivated, which he said presents lots of investment opportunities.
According to him, contrary to widely held belief that the oil and gas sector is the mainstay of the nation’s economy, he noted that the oil and gas sector contributes only 9.6 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product GDP while the food and agricultural sector accounts for 24.4 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP as at 2016.
He, however, noted that though the “oil and gas sector contributes more in terms of foreign exchange earnings as the country produces about 9.4 million barrels of crude oil per day, which translates to $50million or N90billion per day, a refocusing on investments in the agricultural and related sector will open up the economy.”
Apart from the agricultural sector, Ogbechie also disclosed that great investment opportunities exist in the Information and Communications Technology ICT sector of the nation’s economy, accounting for about 9.8 per cent of GDP as at 2016.
From a paltry $50 million ICT investment in 2001, the investment profile has grown to over $70 billion in 2016, even as the sector has experienced 3.9 per cent GDP growth rate in the last 15 years.
Statistics also show that active telecoms subscribers stood at 139 million as at August 2017, while active Internet subscribers stood at 91.6 million in June 2017, with the sector spending well over $1 billion annually on the purchase of foreign software.
President of the Club, Mr. Isichei Osamgbi, while speaking at the event, which coincided with some of the activities marking the Economic and Community Development Month, urged Nigerians to help Government move the economy forward by taking the guest speaker’s advise of investing in agriculture and other relevant sectors like ICT and real estate amongst others, to grow the economy and create jobs for the good of everyone.

Ogbechie also listed the real estate and construction segments of the economy as another area with huge investment opportunities, accounting for 3.9 per cent of the nation’s GDP in 2015, with a projected GDP growth rate of 10 per cent and an estimated investment in the sector well over $13.65 billion.

He cited the World Bank, 2014 projection, which said that a total of N59. 5 trillion would be needed to plug the housing gap in the country with an affordable housing deficit of 17 million houses with Lagos accounting for 2.9 million of that with an estimated cost of $363 billion, among several other sectors including entertainment.
He observed that if every successful business person come forward with their views like the guest speaker to share their business experience, the nation will be the better for it, noting that Ogbechie having worked at PriceWater Coopers before moving on to set up Rainoil Nigeria Limited, which is today a major player in the downstream segment of the oil and gas sector in Nigeria, is still unrelenting in investing to grow Nigeria economically, as well a pushing his dream of winning more converts to see the golden opportunities in agriculture for the nation and its citizens.

PoliticsFormer Senator Danladi Sankara Dumps Pdp For Apc by TalkItalk(op): 7:25am On Oct 30, 2017
Alhaji Danladi Sankara, former Senator representing Jigawa Northwest, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sankara was received by the Jigawa Governor, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru at the Malam Aminu Kano triangle Square on Sunday in Dutse.
Badaru said that the defection of the former senator was a welcome development to the party in the state.
The governor said that the APC had caught a big fish, for the entrance of Sankara to APC in view of his pedigree in his former party.
Badaru recalled that Sankara was one time National Vice chairman, PDP Northwest geo-political zone and Sole Administrator of the party in Sokoto state.
“With his defection to APC, PDP is completely dead in Jigawa because Sankara is one of the founders of PDP in the country and the person that brought it to jigawa,’’ he said.
The governor, however, said that the immediate past administration left a contract liability of N92 billion to him but with the help of God and the good people of the state, he overcame the situation.
He lamented the myriad of problems left by the previous administration of PDP at both state and federal levels which resulted in President Muhammadu Buhari giving out bail outs to states.
Chief John Oyegun, National chairman of APC who was represented at the ceremony by the chairman of the party in the Northwest, Alhaji Shuaibu Lawal, assured that Sen. Sankara would be treated fairly like other members of the party.
Earlier, while formally declaring for the party, Sankara said that he was joining the party with 8,905 of his supporters.
Sankara pledged to work for the unity and progress of the party, to win all elections in the state and at the federal level.

BusinessIt Is More Profitable To Invest In Agriculture, ict Than Oil & Gas - Rainoil Boss by TalkItalk(op): 7:01am On Oct 30, 2017
A major player in the downstream segment of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and Managing Director of Rainoil Nigeria Limited, Engr. Gabriel Ogbechie,

TravelInterests Shown By Several Countries To Acquire Nigerian Airports by TalkItalk(op): 6:47am On Oct 30, 2017
Some stakeholders in the aviation sector, including members of the National Assembly, are worried that investors from some Middle East countries are expressing interest in the planned concession of Nigerian airports.

It was learnt that the interests thus far received from countries like Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are bothering the stakeholders because of the security implication for Nigeria and alleged “northern agenda” currently put forward either by coincidence or deliberately in the concession buildup.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently granted approval for the concession of the four international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano. The approval, currently being worked out by the Ministry of Aviation, is the first phase of the plan to concession all the 22 Federal Government-owned airports nationwide.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, last week recounted the gains of President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent visit to Turkey and among the mentioned is the expression of interest by Turkish investors.
Besides Turkey, Saudi and Qatari investors have also shown interest in the multi-million dollar concession arrangement. At one of the public hearings held last Thursday, members of the National Assembly joint committee on aviation got worried about the antecedent of a country like Turkey that has lately been embroiled in political unrest, as well as serving as a channel through which arms and ammunition were smuggled into Nigeria.
While the Turkish authorities have denied having a hand in the arms-trafficking saga, aviation experts are wary of future transactions with investors with Turkish interests.
A member of a civil society organisation, who was at the hearing, said some lawmakers were of the view that if the biddings were restricted to the middle east, then it will not get the buy-in of Nigerians who “will see it as coloured by a northern and religious agenda.”
Aviation union members present at the meeting said it was to prevent the airports from falling into the wrong hands that they demanded to be part of the concession process for transparency. The unions were, however, happy that the Federal Government has promised to ensure transparency by involving them.
On the implication of such concerns for the concession plan, aviation security consultant, Group Capt. John Ojikutu (rtd), said he was as disturbed as the lawmakers, though he was quick to add that it was still early to conclude.
Ojikutu said that “whereas we cannot but be skeptical with the biddings, expression of interest is also coming from Europe and Canada, and all need to be patient.”
He said from his conversation with the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, there were several hurdles in the concession process and it was less likely that the wrong bidders would be able to grab a pie in the exercise.

Ojikutu, who is also the Secretary General of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI), said: “I am as worried as you, no doubt about that. The National Assembly is also as worried. I think, from what I’ve heard, the minister too is very cautious with what he is doing. Just the way he handled the Abuja airport’s runway is the way he is handling this.

“From the look of things now, they have not left the level of getting the consultants of about three or four to package things together. When they get to that stage, there must be a stakeholders’ meeting, and there would be. It is not only the concession, but also the national carrier, maintenance facility and aerotropolis that are being packaged.
“So, it is too early to start speculating because in any case, all these things will still have to go through the infrastructure concession commission, the PPP, Ministry of Justice and then the Federal Executive Council for approval.

“But in lieu of the security concerns, I have advised them to focus on concession of the terminals, cargo sections and car parks among others, but not the aeronautical side. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has even warned African countries since 2009 not to concession aeronautical side in the light of security issues around us,” Ojikutu said.

HealthMonkeypox Outbreak: One Suspected Case Discovered In Kano by TalkItalk(op): 6:58am On Oct 29, 2017
Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabul Getso, has confirmed that a suspected case of Monkeypox has been recorded in Bebeji Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner told journalists on Saturday in Kano that blood sample of the victim had been sent to Abuja for clinical verification.

He added that, “one of the symptoms of the disease was noticed in the patient, but we are suspecting that the diseases is more of Chickens pox than monkey pox”.
He said the suspected victim has been isolated and put on intensive clinical watch until the result of the sample was received.
“The State also identified 60 people who had contacts with the victims and all of them have been quarantine,” he said.
The Commissioner said that a team has put the entire area where the suspected case was recorded under clinical watch, adding that the state has establishment a special clinic to handle any outbreak.
“For now only 11 States are affected by the monkeypox disease and 94 persons are the victims out of which only six are confirmed.
“The Kano case from Bebeji Local Government is yet to be confirmed. The blood sampling will take three weeks before it is ready,” he said.
A Don, Dr Oladapo Afolabi, had on Thursday warned of possible outbreak of more zoonotic disease if the government failed to convey a national public health agenda on human-animal relationships.
Afolabi, a veterinary expert and lecturer at Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun, made the assertion while peaking on the recent outbreakof Monkeypox in some states in the South-South and South-West.
He said that the outbreak was a reflection of public ignorance.
Monkeypox outbreak was first reported in Bayelsa on Sept. 22, while it spread to adjourning states such as Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and recently Ekiti, Ogun and Lagos.
The zoonotic disease was first discovered in Nigeria in 1970 when two cases were discovered as a virus in the like of smallpox which occurred in the colonies of monkeys.
Following its resemblance to smallpox, it was named Monkeypox. The first recorded case was in Democratic Republic of Congo.
However, in 1971, Nigeria reported the first case of Monkeypox where two cases were established. In 1978, there was one case of Monkeypox.
Monkeypox is a rare zoonotic disease caused by contact with the monkeypox virus that belongs to the same family of viruses that include Variola Virus.
The Monkeypox virus can cause an illness with a generalised vesicular skin rash, fever and
painful jaw swelling. Previous outbreaks have led to death in about 1 to 10 per cent of infected cases.
There is no specific medicine to treat the disease, but intensive supportive care helps patients to recover fully.
On the spread of zoonotic diseases to human, Afolabi said that they could be transmitted directly or indirectly between animals and humans, hence extra caution must be taken.
“Zoonotic diseases may be fatal and be easily spread because they are mostly virus which travels fast; they are infections that can be transmitted directly or indirectly.
“Sometimes, the severity of these diseases in human may be fatal and life threatening, hence there is a need for a public health agenda on handling of wildlife by government.
“People got in contact with these zoonotic diseases through sheer ignorance and spread them through same ignorance. Some of the patients after contacting it still prefer staying among relatives.
“Anybody with traces of zoonotic disease should first be isolated before any medication, then there should be quarantine of the affected areas because zoonotic diseases travel fast,’’ he said.
Afolabi said that there should be greater public health awareness by government on how to handle zoonotic diseases.
“The recent outbreak calls for greater public awareness on zoonotic diseases, they are from wide ranges of organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungus or parasites.
“From records, there are about 250 zoonotic organisms and they can be found in some of the domesticated animals and wildlife.
“We can contact zoonotic diseases from dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, farm animals and other wildlife which include the recent ones from monkeys such as Ebola and Monkeypox.
“Since we are in the tropics, there should be more advocacies on handling of these diseases to avoid the spread, because the public are naive on ways to prevent its unfortunate spread,’’ he said.
Afolabi said that genetic mutations of organisms may be on the rise in the animals which might give rise to discovery of more zoonotic diseases that may affect humans if precautions were not taken.
“The increasing genetic mutations in animals may lead to the emergence of many new zoonotic diseases which, sadly, may defy human resistance as much as we keep contacts with those animals.
“There are some diseases now that are crossing the animal barriers to human, some of them are not affecting humans before, but now, because of several factors that have reduced human immunity.
“The only way out of this is to be careful with the way we handle the animals in the wild. Also, there are some micro-organisms that were accidentally developed in the laboratories.
“These micro-organisms are accidentally released and now, there is a gradual evolution of those organisms through mutation crossing animal barriers to human,’’ he said.
Afolabi said that as a matter of prevention, diligent personal hygiene must be adhered to and the public should reduce the consumption of animals that were susceptible to zoonotic diseases.

Foreign AffairsCatalonia Ignores Madrid Take Over, Forms Opposition Government by TalkItalk(op): 7:46pm On Oct 28, 2017
Catalan leaders on Saturday rejected the official takeover announcement of Catalonia regional government by the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Carles Puigdemont, the leader of Catalonia, however, called for peaceful opposition to the Spanish government’s takeover.
Puigdemont in a statement refused to accept his firing ordered by central authorities in Madrid, who officially took over command of the north-eastern region.
“It’s very clear that the best form of defending the gains made until now is democratic opposition to article 155,” Puigdemont said.
Spain took formal direct control of Catalonia on Saturday, on paper firing the region’s defiant separatist government a day after lawmakers passed a declaration of independence for the prosperous north-eastern region.
The move came after one of the most tumultuous days in the country’s recent history, as the national parliament in Madrid approved unprecedented constitutional measures to halt the secessionist drive by the regional parliament in Barcelona.
Spain made the takeover official by publishing special measures online early Saturday in the country’s gazette.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who now replaces Puigdemont as the top decision-maker in the north-eastern region, has also dissolved the regional parliament and called a new regional election to be held on Dec. 21.
Still, it was not clear at all whether a new election would solve Spain’s problems with separatists in Catalonia.
Polls suggest pro-independence parties would likely maintain their slim advantage in parliamentary seats but would not get more than 50 per cent of the vote.
“Spain is living through a sad day,” Rajoy said. “We believe it is urgent to listen to Catalan citizens, to all of them, so that they can decide their future and nobody can act outside the law on their behalf.”
Puigdemont and 12 other members of the Catalan Cabinet will no longer be paid and could face charges of usurping others’ functions if they refuse to obey.
There was no immediate sign that top Catalan officials will do so, or comply with the orders.
Beyond any possible resistance from top Catalan officials, it’s unclear how Rajoy’s government in Madrid will be able to exert its control at lower levels of Catalonia’s vast regional administration.
Catalonia had secured the ability to govern itself in many areas, including education, health and policing, since democracy returned to Spain following the death of dictator Gen. Francisco Franco in 1975.
Some among Catalonia’s roughly 200,000 civil servants have said they will refuse to obey orders from Madrid.
They risk being punished or even fired under the special powers granted to central authorities by the nation’s Senate on Friday.
Catalonia held its independence referendum Oct. 1 and declared independence more than three weeks later.
The U.S., France and Germany were among several countries who rejected the declaration.

Politics2019 Elections: Nigerian Women Want Positions As Deputies, Urges Inec by TalkItalk(op): 4:52pm On Oct 27, 2017
The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria, on Friday advocated for positions of Vice President, Deputy Governors and Vice Chairmen of Local Government to women in future elections.

This was part of the ten points resolutions reached at the end of a 2-day Nigeria Women Political Stakeholders Summit in Abuja.
The summit with the theme: “Increasing the Participation of Women in Governance process in Nigeria,” was organised by NCWS.
According to the communiqué signed by David Okoror, if a woman emerged as a President, Governor and Chairman of Local Government a man should be the vice.
“The Nigerian women will henceforth vote en bloc for political parties that agree to the above demand, and that prioritise women issues and give women 35 per cent affirmative action.
“The 35 per cent affirmative action should come in both political party structure, nomination for elections and appointive offices.
“Government at all levels, donor agencies, civil society organisations and faith based organisation interested in equality and the development of Nigeria should support the capacity building and financial empowerment of women interested in politics and governance,’’ it said.
The communique also said Nigeria women must close ranks, unite, build synergy and work together to present common front in future political engagements, if they must make political progress.
It called on the National Assembly to stop giving the impression that they are against the progress of Nigerian women and should therefore pass all relevant legislation relating to the female gender before them.
It also urged Nigerian women to register in large as members with existing political parties and be active.
“The NCWS being the umbrella organisation for women associations in Nigeria, for the purpose of fairness and equity should be well represented in INEC board.
“That INEC should review extant rules and regulations to become friendlier towards encouraging female participation in the political process,’’ it said.
The council also called on the Nigeria women to believe in themselves and actively engage other stakeholders to contest for elective offices.

PoliticsRe: 2019 Elections: Be Careful, Else We Will Fail Again - Bode George Urges Pdp by TalkItalk(op): 2:12pm On Oct 27, 2017
TalkItalk:
An aspirant for the chairmanship position of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has advised the party members not to waste the party’s second chance at rebuilding.

George, a former Military Governor of Ondo state said that God had given the party a second chance and as such the party must work to win back the support of the electorate.
George, who was also a former Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, warned all party members to be wary lest the party gets it wrong again.
“We want to appeal to all our members let us not blow it.
“I want to appeal to all card carrying members of PDP and all those who will come to our national convention let us be careful.
“You don’t have a second chance to make first impression. The impression am talking about is that our convention must be a carnival.
“We must ensure that we do not allow people with unseen hands to destroy our party.
“The public perception about our convention will contribute to winning the hearts of larger electorate in the country,” George said.
George who described PDP as the only party in the country with national outlook, said that the greater job and vision of PDP was to get back to the villa.
He said that though realising this maybe heard, PDP would regain power at the federal level in the 2019 general elections.
“There is a saying in my place that to crack the hard part of palm kernel is not easy.
“You have to be careful of your fingers and how handle the stones but with calmness of mind, indebt analysis and tactical manoeuvre, we can get there.
“I have no doubt in my mind that larger electorate who are more in numbers than card carry members of political party will make their decisions,” he added.
He disclosed that a certain proposals had been agreed among elders in the party to form a pressure group or board or committee of older generation, which would weigh in into unnecessary competition going on in the party.
“Let the best man win,” he said.

Politics2019 Elections: Be Careful, Else We Will Fail Again - Bode George Urges Pdp by TalkItalk(op): 1:58pm On Oct 27, 2017

Another chairman aspirant and founder of DAAR Communications, Cheif Raymond Dokpesi also speaking at the occasions described George as industrious leader who is eminently qualify to lead PDP.

PoliticsTompolo's Property Confiscated By Fg Until He Comes Out Of Hiding by TalkItalk(op):
Fugitive former militant, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has lost some of his assets to the Federal Government, temporarily, over his evasion of the court to answer fraud charges.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos today dismissed an appeal filed by him, seeking to set aside the decision of the Federal High Court,
Lagos which empowered the EFCC to attach all the properties belonging to the ex-militant.
Justice I. N. Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos on February 19, 2016 made an order attaching Tompolo’s properties for failure to appear to answer the charges against him.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on December 15, 2015 instituted a Criminal charge against Tompolo and nine others over allegations of fraud at Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.
However, despite substituted service of the Court Summons effected on him, Tompolo refused to appear in Court.
Consequently, Justice Buba issued a warrant of arrest against him. Armed with the Warrant of Arrest, the Commission launched a manhunt for him, but could not effect his arrest.
On February 19, 2016, the Commission, through its counsel, Festus Keyamo, SAN, prayed the Court for an order attaching the properties of Tompolo by seizure, pending his arrest or appearance before the Court.
The court granted the Commission’s request prompting Tompolo to appeal against the decision.
However, in a unanimous judgment today, the Court of Appeal held that Tompolo cannot be heard complaining that his properties are attached by the Court below, when he has not come to answer to the summons against him.
The court held that the option available to Tompolo is to appear before the Federal High Court to apply for the order to be discharged, instead of filing the Appeal. The Court of Appeal was of the view that his private right of property has not been breached by the said order.
