Thanks for your response. The project is not mine but belongs to a colleague's client. The client is looking at 8 earthen ponds for the 50,000 juveniles.

Please can you break the "N15m for 6 months" down for me to say, how much kg of feeds they will consume weekly/monthly at Month 1, Month 2, etc and the associated monthly costs (kg times cost per unit) to enable prepare a reasonable cashflow projection.

Cc: daclemx, opeaceo, FarmTech
Budget between 250-300 per fish for the next 6 month.

I know your experienced, what is your take on the 10by10ft size of the pond? @op know one knows everything, so please try and do more research on the size of pond, at this stage you can still make ammends if wrong. best of luck
10ft by 10ft is d standard pond that can take 1000 fish till maturity bro. But would advise him not to stock them till maturity. He shld try to reduce d number to abt 700-800 when the are 3months. My opinion though. I have a. 10ft by 8ft pond and I stock around 1000 @ fingerlings stage. When they are 3month old I sort and reduce them 2 around 700.

Thanks for the response... prices seems to b better out of Lagos...

Still a novice sha, so don't know much
Apart from the location there are other factors affecting price of fish. Cost of production in lagos is relatively low as compared to those outside lagos. Secondly there are lots of fish farmers in lagos as compared to fish farmers in d south east, north central and north as a whole, demands will be high since there just few farmers. Imagine someone selling over 500kg of fish daily and from a single farm in Ibadan.
AgricultureRe: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Tbagwell1(m): 5:11pm On Aug 03, 2015
BELEXYFARMS:
Yeah i totally agree. Location matters alot. Just like when fish used to be N600 in PH and Abuja and it was N450 in Lagos sometime back.
In Lagos the fishes have to be really massive before u can even get them to buy at N550. Were those fishes u sold very big and was it bulk sales to market women?
It bulk sales, funny enough they average weight was btw 800gram - 1kg, those weighing 1.5kg above was sold @ 1200 but it was sold to a joint lady. Their is ds woman I have that usually buys fish from ibadan evey day a bus full of fish come to her place and she sells to d market women. They very big ones #17,250 per basin and each basin contains 25kg Dats like 690 per kg.

Fhemmmy:

Where is your location and are you fish sales consultant?
Makurdi, Benue state capital. Am also a fish farmer. The friend I sold for, that was his 1st try I had to take charge of the sale to avoid stories that touch.
AgricultureRe: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Tbagwell1(m): 1:23pm On Aug 03, 2015
BELEXYFARMS:
Infact, this is the major problem we are facing now. Cost of feeds have risen enormously, other operational costs are almost unbearable and fast growing fingerlings are rare to come by this days but the prices of fish remains almost static and unencouraging cry
I think the prices of fish depends on your location and bargaining power. I still sold a friends fish last week @600 naira per kilo.

Pls someone should verify this statement, Mr Robonski said that he spent roughly 650,000 on feeding 4000 fiishes, that means to feed 10,000 should be roughly estimated at 1.7mills. We are all learning here, thanks.
Yes Dats true, but that was a long time ago. Things have changed.

Yea, I have a borehole. I am preparing a plan of the cost. I also need the cost of feeding such a number of fishes from fingerlings to table size. I do have about 2 plot of land also.
okay, as for d cost of feeding 10k fingerlings budget between 250-300 naira.

This is one of the facinating thread that I have seen so far. Thanks to Mr Robonski and the others...... Please I want to know if a million naira will be able to feed 10,000 fingerlings to table size. If not how much should one's estimation be like. Thanks.
Would like to ask what you have on ground, eg ponds, a borehole that will help answer ur question

Please just want to ask two questions. .. .. .. .
.. How much dose it cost on average to feed a fish for 8 months
How much can u sale 8 months old fish
Budget btw 200-250 naira per fish till maturity, 70% of ds is on feeds alone, selling depends on d current price in your location which usually varies. From 450 -600 per kg.
