OSUN MONARCH’S DEATH - OLUPO OF OLUPONA'S DEMISE THROWS IGBOS INTO MOURNING, AS ONYENDU GEORGE IHEONUNEKWU CRIES UNCONTROLLABLY IN PUBLIC

Igbos in Osun state have been thrown into mourning following the death of His Royal Majesty, Oba Emmanuel Oyeleso Oyebamiji, Fadare 11 and the Olupo of Olupona land.

The monarch’s death which was announced by his family on January 3, 2022 brought grief to the entire Olupona land. The Igbos resident in Ayedire were said to have voluntarily closed their shops and went into mourning in honor of the late Oba whom they said was a father to Igbos in the area.

Speaking with TBE Magazine correspondent in the area, Onyendu George Iheonunekwu, the traditional Igbo leader in Ayedire and Secretary of Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo N’uzoije expressed shock over the demise of the monarch, describing it as a personal loss to him and the entire Igbos in the area.

Last week, the picture of Onyendu George Iheonunekwu crying in public had trended on social media. Reacting to this, the traditional Igbo leader admitted crying in public when he received the shocking news of the monarch’s death, noting that he didn’t know that he was crying until one of his personal assistants called his attention to it. “I was in a ceremony when I got the information. Out of shock and realization that I had lost a father, brother and adviser, I forgot that I was in public. To be honest with you, I unconsciously cried publicly. Later when I saw it on social media, I laughed. You know we are in the digital era. The death of His Royal Majesty, Oba Emmanuel Oyeleso Oyebamiji is a great loss to me and the entire Igbos in Ayedire. He was everything to to me. He installed me the Asiwaju Ndigbo in Ayedire in partnership with all Obas from the local government on March 16, 2018. During his life time, he was against injustice and refused to be biased while mediating on issues between indigenes of the community and the non indigenes. He will be greatly missed”.

The monarch who was a devoted Christian and a member of the Anglican communion brought development to olupona land, and also built an ultra modern palace for the community. His Royal Majesty, Oba Emmanuel Oyeleso Oyebamiji, Fadare 11 and the Olupo of Olupona land was the Chairman Osun state Farmers Association, a member of the Osun state council of Obas and a life patron of the Association of the Non Indigenes and Non Nationals in Ayedire.

ASWITU MOURNS SHONEKAN & FORMER OYO GOVERNOR, SAYS ALAO AKALA LOVED IGBOS

Association of Southwest Igbo Town Unions (ASWITU), the umbrella body of all Igbo Town Unions, village meetings, women and youth groups in Southwest Nigeria has described the death of the former Nigerian President - Chief Ernest Shonekan and Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala, the former Governor of Oyo state as a huge loss to the Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large.

In a press statement made available to newsmen on January 14, 2022, the President General of ASWITU - Prince Erondu Uche described the exit of these two prominent Nigerians as a huge loss to the country, noting that they left when their wealth of experiences were most needed.

"The death of the former President, Chief Ernest Shonekan and Chief Alao Akala, former Oyo Governor is a huge loss not only to the Yoruba nation but to the entire country. Chief Shonekan will be remembered as a peacemaker and Head of State who took office at a most difficult time. His historic and patriotic role in maintaining the unity of the country is one of the many legacies he left behind. He was committed to the good of our dear country, he played his part, making sacrifices to set Nigeria on the path of progress even with the dark clouds that hovered over Nigeria in the 1990s".

Prince Erondu also described the late Chief Alao Akala as a good leader who loved the Igbos. "On his part the former Governor of Oyo state, Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala lived for the welfare and security of the common man. He meritoriously served in various positions in the political space. He was a friend to Ndigbo in Oyo state and Southwest at large. His memories will remain evergreen. These men died when their wealth of experiences are most needed especially with 2023 in focus.
I pray God to give the Shonekans, Akalas, Yoruba nation and Nigeria the fortitude to bear this huge loss. May God also grant them eternal rest". He added.

The Oyo state President and Secretary General of Association of Southwest Igbo Town Unions (ASWITU), Nze Emeka Enwereonye had on January 13, 2022 led Oyo state delegation of ASWITU to pay a condolence visit to the family of late Alao Akala the former governor of Oyo state.

Chief Ernest Shonekan and Otunba Alao Akala died on January 11 and January 12, 2022 respectively. Shonekan died in Lagos state, while Akala died in Oyo state.

Congratulatory messages have continued to come in from different groups in recognition and also to identify with the new President General of Association of Southwest Igbo Town Unions (ASWITU), Prince Erondu Uche(Onyeoma diohanma Ndigbo).

In a Press conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo South Africa, Comrade Sunny – Wenike Douglas Ibojekere described Prince Erondu as a good leader, great achiever and a man who has many followers across the globe as a result of his good leadership qualities.
“Truly success is the fruit of good ideas pursued with energy, intelligence and determination. Prince Erondu’s election to this position once again reverberates the saying that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and allow things happen to them, rather they went out and happened to things. His, is a proven one. Prince Erondu Uche’s good leadership qualities have drawn to him many followers across the globe”. The South Africa’s Ohanaeze boss assured Prince Erondu of his group’s maximum support.

In the same manner, the President General of Igbo Delegates Assembly in 19 Northern states and Abuja, Chief Chikezie Nwogu has described Prince Erondu’s victory as an act of God, noting that it came at the right time. Speaking to newsmen in Kano over the the weekend, Chief Nwogu said that Prince Erondu is a great leader whose character is worthy of emulation. “When I got the news of Prince Erondu’s emergence as ASWITU President General, I knew that God has a hand in it, because there is a need for us Igbos here in the north to have an alliance with our brothers in the Southwest, with Prince Erondu at the helm of affairs, it is already achieved. I called him as soon as I got the news, we have also sent out a congratulatory message to him. Erondu is a good man, you need to work with him to understand what I mean, honestly, he should be one of the people managing this country”. He is good at what he does, Chief Nwogu added.

Others who in separate press releases and interviews felicitated with AWITU President General includes, Igbo World Assembly signed by Chief, Barr. Jeff Azubuike. Ebonyi State Association South Africa also published a congratulatory message in some Nigeria dailies signed by Dr. Fidelis Emeka Nwankwo (Odenigbo), the President General of the group. Others include, Concerned Citizens of Abia in Diaspora (CCAD) signed by HRH Eze J.I Ochonma, the Secretary General. Pan Nigeria Presidency of Igbo Extraction Coalition (PANPIEC) signed by Southeast coordinator, Chief Frank Obineme (Obu agu dindu) amongst others.

Association of Southwest Igbo Town Unions (ASWITU) has elected Prince Erondu Uche as its first President General while Nze Emeka Enwereonye, the former President Ohanaeze Southwest won the post of Secretary General.

ASWITU is a combination of all Igbo town unions, village meetings and associations in Southwest, making it the most populous Igbo group in Yoruba land. The body which has been in existence before Nigeria's independence in 1960, operated in segments and at different rural and urban settlements where Igbos live. ASWITU which was formed in June 2021 by leaders of Igbo town unions in the southwest held its election on November 28, 2021 in Oyo state to elect it's first elected executive officers.

Addressing the press after the election, the President General of the body, Prince Erondu Uche noted that Igbo town unions form the basis of unity among Ndigbo. "ASWITU is not a new association but is as old as Igbos living in Yoruba land. Ndigbo living in Yoruba land and in other regions have town unions, associations, village meetings, women and youth meetings through which they relate, mainly for welfare purposes. When you hear that Igbos are united, love themselves, support and protect each other, it is the work of town unions. Some village meetings have many members and some have few, but the interesting thing is that everybody is known to his or her compound in the village".

Prince Erondu debunked the rumor making round that Igbos are not united, stating that it is Politicians who disagree amongst themselves. " Those who believe that Igbos are not united are wrong. It is only politicians who disagree amongst themselves like their counterparts around the world. Don't rate Igbos based on the performance of politicians, just like every other tribe. Igbos are united. Igbos love and help themselves. It is only Igbos who lock their shops and businesses at different locations because of the death of an Igbo man or woman, and in most cases, attendance of such burial is made compulsory. Igbos train and empower themselves. In our village meetings, monetary contributions are made and given to members to boast their businesses. The arrest of one Igbo man can cripple the business activities of a town, I have seen where Igbos locked their businesses in protest against unfair treatment given to a fellow Igbo man. You see, what they do is when they want to deny us our right as Igbos, they say they are not united. How do you expect politicians dragging once position to be united? How do you expect everybody to step down for one person? have you seen such in tribe? Don't allow them to deceive you, Igbos are united. No matter how rich, no Igbo can say that he or she has hosted any party or event alone without the assistance of others. These assistance come whether you request for help or not".

Reacting to his emergence as the Secretary General of ASWITU, Nze Emeka Enwereonye the former President of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo Oyo state and Ohanaze Ndi-Igbo Southwest was full of thanks for the honour given to him to serve Ndigbo once again. He expressed his gratitude to the leaders of various unions for supporting the amalgamation of the various town unions into one regional body. "I wish to appreciate you, great Igbo leaders seated here today, your willingness and support for unity and progress is the reason we have Association of Southwest Igbo Town Unions (ASWITU) today. I am giving you the assurance that this executive will through your unalloyed support live up to expectation.

ASWITU is made up of all Igbo town unions, village meetings, associations, women and youth meetings in Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti and Osun States. The body also holds local government and state meetings in all the member states.

Nigerians to start paying tax for using Facebook from January


Nigerians will start paying value added tax (VAT) for using Facebook, beginning from 1st of January 2022.

The tax is directly to Nigerians who use the platform as a means to market or sell their products.

Already, Facebook has started informing users on the platform of the development via email. With the development, Nigerians will now pay a VAT at the applicable rate of 7.5 percent.

The email reads: “Due to implementation of a value-added tax (VAT) in Nigeria, Facebook is required to charge VAT on the sale of ads to advertisers, regardless of whether you’re buying ads for business or personal purposes.

“All advertisers with a business country of Nigeria will be charged an additional 7.5% VAT on advertising services purchased beginning 1 January 2022.

“If you’re registered for VAT and provide your VAT ID, your VAT ID will show up on your ads receipts. In the event that you’re entitled to recover VAT, this may help you recover any VAT you paid to the Nigerian tax authorities if you are a VAT registered business in Nigeria”.

TBE reports the new tax regime is in pursuant of the Companies Income Tax (Significant Economic Presence) Order, introduced in 2020 as an amendment of the Finance Act 2019.

The document imposes tax on any “foreign entity with respect to certain services or digital transactions tax foreign digital service providers offering services to Nigerians and earning revenue in naira.

Meanwhile, the federal government has in recent times gone hard on social media platforms, especially Twitter.

The Nigerian government slammed an indefinite suspension on the operations of the microblogging platform in the country, citing activities capable of undermining the nation’s corporate existence.

COUNCIL OF NDI-NDU NDIGBO CELEBRATES WITH ONYENDU ALLOY OBI IN IBADAN


Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo in Disapora last weekend in Ibadan the Oyo state capital celebrated her first end of year party at the palace of High Chief Alloy Obi.

The end of year party was held after the council’s general meeting where new members were inducted. Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo n’uzoije, High Chief Alloy Obi was full of thanks to God and appreciated Ndigbo for embracing the newly formed council of Igbo traditional leaders in Diaspora. He noted that many people are joining the group in obedience with the directives from Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers and Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide. The two bodies have maintained that the title approved for Igbo leaders living in the diaspora is “ONYENDU NDIGBO”, which is translated as “IGBO LEADER” and not King as many Igbo leaders in Diaspora do out of disobedience.

The newly installed Onyendu Ndigbo of Shagamu and chairman of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo Ogun state, High Chief Michael Uba commended the leadership style of Ambassador George Obiozo, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, noting that Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo n’uzoije will collaborate with the national leadership of Ohanaze Ndigbo to protect the interest of the Igbo nation.

In his vote of thanks, the secretary of the council, Onyendu George Iheonunaekwu thanked the Igbo traditional leaders in attendance especially those who came from neighboring African Countries. He also noted that the Council will welcome Igbo leaders living in Diaspora who will change from being self acclaimed Kings in other peoples’ kingdoms and join the moving train in obedience to Igbo real kings in Igbo land and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

The second part of the occasion which was the first end of year party of the council was well well attended by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Oyo state and Igbo stakeholders from Southwest. The fast rising Igbo musician rated as most famous Igbo lady entertainer, Queen UKB thrilled the crowd with her captivating musical tunes.

Policemen Flee as Okada Riders Attack Police Station To Protest Killing of Colleague in Ondo


Commercial motorcyclists are protesting over the killing of their colleague by a policeman at Arakale area of Akure the Ondo State capital.
The motorcyclists mobilised themselves to A division police station where they attacked policemen on duty.

They broke into the gate and threw stones into the building while policemen and their families fled through the back gate.
Some policemen scaled the fence and ran away while others struggled to take their vehicles away from the barracks.

Bonfires were set in front of the "A" Division as the Okada riders demanded to see the policeman who shot one of their colleagues dead.

It was gathered that a driver had knocked down and killed one okada rider and a cocoa merchant at Arakale area of Akure. Both men died on the spot this sparked a protest by okada riders.

A policeman reportedly attached to a filling station in the area was said to have fired shots in the air to scare the protesters away but one of the shot hit and killed an okada rider.
The policeman reportedly fled to the A Division for refuge and was pursued by the okada riders.
One of the protesters said they want the killer policeman released to them.

Gunshots fired by the police angered the okada riders who hauled stones and other objects into the building. An eyewitness said many policemen scaled the fence and ran away.

Ondo Police spokesman, DSP Fumilayo Odunlami, said the situation has been put under control.
She said, “There was an accident along Arakale where two persons were killed.
“One of our men while trying to rescue the driver of the car that killed an okada Rider and a passenger was attacked and in the process, another okada Rider was killed. “The protesting riders mobilised to A Division to attack the place’

MISSING VANGUARD REPORTER, TORDUE SALEM FOUND DEAD IN ABUJA.

A reporter with Vanguard Newspapers declared to be missing in October has been found dead in Abuja.

Tordue Henry Salem, based in the nation’s capital city covered the House of Representatives beat for the newspaper.

As at press time, details surrounding the recovery of his corpse was sketchy. Meanwhile, some suspects have reportedly been arrested in connection with his disappearance. He was last seen around Total filling station, close to the Force headquarters, Abuja, on October 13, 2021.

One of them is identified as Prince Enyenihi, who was said to have contacted the journalist’s wife to demand a N100 million ransom.

“If you don’t pay, Tordue will be killed in seven days. For more information, call this number,” a text message from Enyenihi to Salem’s wife reportedly said.

The House of Representatives had called on the Nigerian security agencies to immediately launch an investigation into the whereabouts of the missing journalist, Tordue Salem, and give a report to the house in two weeks. This was made known in a motion raised on Tuesday by Ndudi Elumelu, the minority leader of the house.

In the motion, Elumelu raised concerns that the sudden disappearance of the journalist is “an extension of the deteriorating state of insecurity in the nation’s capital which questions the efficiency of the country’s security operatives”. His colleagues in Abuja last month protested to the Fprce Headquarters to press home the demand for his whereabouts.

Igbo Speaking Communities in Lagos state on October 22, 2021 Crowned HRH, King Joseph Egbogu Mba, Eze Umuokorobia gburugburu (King of youths worldwide).

The occasion which attracted Igbo leaders, politicians, different youth groups, women groups, Abians and who is who in Igbo land and in Diaspora was held at his Isolo palace amidst jubilation. The coronation which is the first of its kind got the approval of Igbo stakeholders in Lagos as both Ohanaeze and Igbo Speaking Communities’ Kingmakers and Ndieze were present.

In his first address, the King of Igbo youths worldwide was full of thanks to Ndigbo for the honor given to him and promised to unite all Igbo youths. The Abia state born indigene who is the “Nwakaibeya 1 of Alayi, Osuputuputu n’ime Jisos 1 thanked all in attendance.

Among those in attendance were Chief, Sir Cyril Eze, President General Igbo Speaking Communities Lagos state, Dr. Jonathan Nnaji, Prince Obi Nwadigo, HRH Eze James Agbawodikeizu Nwalozie, HRH Eze Ephraim Nnaemeka, HRH Eze Okey Anorue, High Chief John Uche (Akpati nsiegbe) the first President Ohanaeze Lagos state and President General Igbo National Stakeholders’ Assembly Worldwide. Others include Chief mrs Gloria Amaizu, woman leader Igbo speaking communities, Chief Martins Nwaodika, Chief Ben Obi, Klass Okocha, Sampson Nwankwo, Barr. Martins Okocha. Following the growing tension in Anambra state over the November 6, 2021 governorship election, Onyendu Alloy Obi, the chairman Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo n'uzo ije and Onyendu Ndigbo in Oyo state has urged all the governorship candidates to avoid the use of violence in the forth coming election, describing as unacceptable the idea of do or die politics.

Addressing newsmen at his Ibadan palace, the Anambra born traditional leader, Onyendu Alloy Obi stressed the need for a peaceful election in Nigeria and Anambra state in particular. "I wish to advice all Candidates and political parties involved in this November 6, 2021 election to talk to their followers and party members to shun violence and embrace peace. Anambra state belongs to all of us, after the election, life continues. More so, in the case of violence, people who die or sustain injuries are the same people you intend to govern, whether they are in your party or not you need to protect them. I know that the candidates are all men of integrity who will not get involved in such acts, but most a time over zealous followers or supporters cause these problems. That is why I want them to address their supporters before the election. No election is worth the life of any individual. No life should be lost in this election". He said.

Following the continues violence in the southeast, the heavy militarisation of the region and the indigenous People of Biafra's sit-at-home order, there has been fears over the conduct of Anambra governorship election scheduled for this weekend November 6, 2021. Recently, the military has been highly criticised over their alleged involvement in the killing of innocent citizens and burning of houses in the region, an allegation which the army denied. Also, Amnesty international in July this year had accused Nigerian security agents of killing over 650 innocent civilians in southeast within 6 months. A development which the organization condemned in strong terms.

Reacting to the violence in the southeast, Onyendu George Iheonunekwu, the secretary Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo n'uzo ije and Onyendu Ndigbo in Osun state said that the situation is worrisome and needs all stakeholders to join hands together to find a lasting solution. He advised those with their permanent voters card to go out peaceful and cast their votes, stating that all eyes are on Anambra election including the international community.

Among the top contenders in the forth coming election are the former CBN governor, Chukwuma Soludo of APGA the ruling party, Andy Ubah of APC and Val Ozoigbo of PDP.

History was made on 23rd of October 2021 as Igbo Leaders in Diaspora gathered in Ogun state and launched a new group known as “Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo N’uzo Ije”.

The Igbo leaders mostly drawn from southwest part of Nigeria and some African countries like Mali, Kenya, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast are all Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo in their various states and local government areas of abode. Addressing the press shortly after the inaugural meeting, the first Onyendu Ndigbo in diaspora, Chairman of Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo in diaspora and Onyendu Ndigbo in Oyo state, High Chief Alloy Obi expressed his gratitude to the leaders for the mantle of leadership given to him. He promised to use his position to unite all Igbos in diaspora. “ I am glad that Igbo leaders found me worthy of this exalted position. I want to assure them that I will lead well, the era of disunity among Ndigbo is over. I will unite all Igbos in the diaspora, we shall be one and speak with one voice”.

The new group was formed following the cancellation of Eze Ndigbo in diaspora on July 5, 2009 by the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. The Southeast Traditional Rulers had declared as illegal the coronation of Eze Igbo in diaspora and approved the installation of “ONYENDU NDIGBO” which is translated as “Igbo Leader”. The group had condemned the act of Igbo leaders being installed Kings in other peoples’ Kingdoms, describing it as insult to such host communities and a ridicule to Igbo customs and tradition.

Reacting to the directive of the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers, the Chairman of Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo in Diaspora, High Chief Alloy Obi said that he chose to be the first to obey the southeast Traditional Rulers when he became the first Igbo leader to be coronated Onyendu in 2011 and maintained that the decision of the southeast leaders is in the best interest of the Igbos. “ When I was chosen as the Igbo leader in Oyo state, the plan was for me to be crowned a king, I said no, because our real Kings in Southeast had cancelled it. I chose the approved one – Onyendu. It is in the best interest of Ndigbo. I cannot disobey my fathers. All Igbos come from different villages which are under different autonomous communities and each of these autonomous communities has a sitting king. What will be my fate when I go to my village after retirement, knowing fully that there can only be one king in a community? It will be disgraceful that a king in the township will be addressed as a chief or mister in the village. No one will call you a king because you are not. This is why I chose the honorable path”. He added.

The association also after her inaugural meeting installed High Chief Michael Chidiebere Uba as Onyendu Ndigbo in Ogun state on October 24, 2021. In a chat with TBE Magazine correspondent after the coronation, the secretary of the Council of Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo in diaspora and Onyendu Ndigbo in Osun state, High Chief George Iheonunekwu said that the group is not just a social gathering but an association of the Custodians of Igbo cultural traditions in the diaspora. “We are the traditional leaders of the Igbos living outside Igbo land. We are not kings but Ndi-Ndu Ndigbo in diaspora, representing Igbo kings in the southeast. By Igbo tradition, Kings don’t live outside their kingdoms. The association has come to stay as we have the blessings of our fathers from Southeast”.

The coronation ceremony was well attended by Igbos in Ogun state, women and youth groups, Yoruba traditional rulers, Igbo leaders from all parts of Nigeria, politicians, captains of industries and religious bodies. Onyendu Ndigbo in Akure, High Chief T.C Umenweke, represented by his onowu, High Chief Okechukwu Okorie advised the newly installed Onyendu Ndigbo in Ogun state to continue to be a good leader as he has been known for.

The two events held on October 8 and October 10, 2021 respectively.

A BRIEF ABOUT JEFF AZUBUIKE;
Chief, barr. Jeff Azubuike was born to Mr Ben Chukwuezi Azubuike of Umuaga Umukam Obollo and Mrs Cecilia Adarewe Azubuike (nee Okpoebe Nwokeji-egbe of Umuntako Umuozu) both in Ugiri Clan, Mbano on 27th March 1963. He grew up like his peers and started his childhood education at Central school Obollo.

He later attended Library Avenue Primary School Umuahia, and proceeded to government College Umuahia. After his Secondary education, he worked briefly with Geosource Nigeria Ltd, an oil prospecting company based in Port Harcourt Rivers State. In 1986, he enlisted into the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police where he rose to the rank of NCO.
While in the Army, he registered and studied Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, where he graduated in 1993. In 1995, he obtained an Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Criminal Justice Administration from University of Lagos. In 1996, he attended the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he obtained an Advanced Diploma in Security Management. Chief, Barrister Azubuike attended several courses in the Nigerian Army as a soldier. He equally served in several Military formations across the country. He was a member of the Nigerian Army Peace-keeping Mission (ECOMOG) in Monrovia, Liberia; As well as a member of the United Nations Peace-keeping Contingent in the former Yugoslavia, based in Kosovo during the Bosnia war. He retired from active service in 1998 and is currently a military pensioner in the Nigerian Army.

In his quest to fulfill an accomplished family life, he got married to Mrs Rosemary Eneyi Azubuike in 1999 and is presently blessed with four children. Barr Azubuike relocated to Johannesburg South Africa in 2003. While in South Africa, he worked with the Special Organized Crime Unit of the South African Police Service as an Undercover Agent, where he dismantled several criminal gangs across the country.

He has received several awards from the South African Police Service and Standard Bank South Africa where he trained and headed an elite Intelligence and Undercover Unit. His unquenchable desire for success and excellence made him to register and study law in the Prestigious University of South Africa, UNISA where he obtained (LLB) Law in 2016. He is currently practicing law in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dr. Nkem Okeke, Deputy to the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano has dumped the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr. Okeke joined the APC on Wednesday and was received by President Muhammadu Buhari at a brief ceremony that was held at the State House, Abuja. Okeke was led to the President by the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman and Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma. Governor Uzodinma, who presented the new APC member to the President, briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting.

In the build up to the November 6 Anambra governorship election, there have been a series of high-profile defections from APGA and PDP to APC.
Anambra APC has moved from having zero lawmakers at the state and federal legislature to having the highest number of lawmakers at the federal level. Although, it is still unclear if APC has gained the majority in Anambra State House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, in a swift reaction, candidate of the APC for the election, Sen. Andy Uba has welcomed Okeke into the party fold. In a statement shared via his verified Facebook page, Uba states thus: “We welcome the current Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nkem Okeke (Ugogbuzuo Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri) to our great party, APC.

“My aspiration to govern Anambra State is anchored on public interests. We will not disappoint ndi Anambra. “We are setting New Development Agenda for Our State”.

Reacting to development in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, APGA National Publicity Secretary, Tex Okechukwu, said the action of the deputy governor has no consequence of the party ahead of the November 6 governorship election in the state.

He added that the defection was long expected since Okeke had been grudging everyone over his inability to secure the party’s governorship ticket.
“The deputy governor had thought that the governor (Willie Obiano) and the party were going to hand over the governorship ticket of the party in the last primary to him on a platter,” said Okechukwu.

“When that didn’t happen, he started behaving abnormally, even to the point of insubordination and dereliction of duties.”

Okechukwu, however, stated that APGA viewed the exit of the deputy governor, without formal notification to the party or his principal, as uncalled for, ill-timed, and ill-advised as the governor had always treated him with respect, love, and consideration.

According to him, the party condemns the desperation being exhibited by the opposition APC in the build-up to the governorship election. The APGA spokesman also called on all members of the party to remain united to ensure that they win the election with wider margins.

“Let nobody be deceived – APC has no root anywhere in Anambra State and that is why all that they do is going about luring political deadwood with money and other lucres,” Okechuchwu added.
“No matter the designs of the opposition and other subterranean forces, APGA Is poised to win the forthcoming election and continue with the massive infrastructural development going on in the state.”

MAN TRACES LOVER TO PARTY, SHOOTS, INJURES GUESTS IN ONDO

The Police in Ondo State have arrested a man, for allegedly shooting to disperse the guests at a party in Oba Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The man whose identify is still unknown, it was gathered allegedly stormed the venue of the party and started shooting sporadically to disperse the guests when he saw his girlfriend with another man.
Though no life was reportedly lost in the incident, many of the guests at the venue of the party were said to have sustained injuries as they ran for safety.

A source who identified the suspect as a security man explained that he traced his lover to the party as the girlfriend allegedly followed another man to the party.

The source said, “The suspect is a security man but we don’t know the organization he works for because he was not in uniform. He traced his girlfriend, who was with another man, to the party. I think it was out of anger that he brought out a gun and started to shoot sporadically when he saw the lady with another man. The shooting sent all the guests away, including his girlfriend and the party ended abruptly.”

Another source claimed that the suspect was an officer of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun corps, in the local government. Some said he is a serving policeman attached to the area.

But when contacted, the state Commander of the corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye denied the claims saying the suspect was not one of his boys as he did not receive such a report.

He said, “I am not aware of the incident and I didn’t have any report of such from the Akoko area. The suspect is not one of us, you know there are many security agencies but I’m sure he is not one of my Amotekun corps.

A police source said the case has been transferred to the state police headquarters, Akure, the state capital for further investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrest and said an investigation had commenced into the case.

Death in any situation is painful, but when it is as brutal and senseless as murder, our hearts break twice.

As a nation mourns a man known to many as the husband of late Professor Dora Akunyili, we as a family remember the man we call Daddy.

He was a son — as a young man, he fought as a soldier in the Biafra war. A war that earned him a bullet that stayed lodged in his skull ever since. From this experience of violence and death, he went on to become a doctor saving thousands of lives — a powerful testament to his journey through life.

He was a loving husband. It is no surprise that, on the day of his untimely death, he was on his way from a memorial lecture in honor of his late wife, who he cherished and honored even in death. At this event and always, he invited everyone to be like his wife Dora.

He was a father and grandfather. With joy, he would share that he was a grandfather to 9 grandchildren. He welcomed his youngest grandchild just a little over a month ago and had yet to meet her. Ask any of the grandchildren about Grandpa, and they will tell you stories of love and support, be it his long text to his oldest granddaughter at the victory of Kamala Harris inviting her to note the inspiration for herself or speaking to his namesake and grandson Chike, reminding him of his own limitless potential.

He was an older brother to all his siblings, many of whom call him Daddy in reverence and recognition of his love.

He was a healer. A passionate surgeon, Dr. Chike was the Medical Director at St. Leo’s Hospital in Enugu. For decades he served countless people, many of whom he cared for and healed at no cost. His one request was always that they paid it forward.

He started his healing journey in the north where he built and ran a mobile clinic in Jaban Kogo. For many months, he lived and worked among the people, studying and becoming fluent in Hausa to better serve his patients. His commitment to providing healthcare to that community earned him the National Youth Service Merit Award.

He was a philanthropist. For 45 years he treated priests in Bigard Memorial Seminary and beyond for free, trusting this to be his calling.

He was a Papal Knight of Saint John, a title bestowed by the Vatican in recognition of his dedication and service to the Church.

He was a man of the people, loved by many for his wisdom and for his courage to always speak the truth. His counsel was sought far and wide.

He is remembered for his ability to hold an audience captive with his words and stories. To hear him speak in Igbo was to be blessed by the wisdom of endless proverbs.

He was an ordinary man who, everyday, showed his extraordinary commitment to his community and his people by his ability to help people in need without question.

In his final days, his heart was heavy about the state of things in Nigeria. He lamented about the struggles of people unable to pay for treatment anymore and about the unfortunate state of unrest where human life had lost its value.

His hope echoed that of his beloved wife and our mother, that Nigeria might lean on the forces of unity and shun disunity. That we might do the right thing, trusting that our potential lies in the goodness of the people and the greatness of the nation.

What happens if we move closer to these ideals?

His murder and death leave a gap which sorrow cannot fill.

May it not be in vain.

2023 PRESIDENCY: PANPIEC MAY PRODUCE IGBO CANDIDATE IF PDP & APC FAIL - PRINCE ERONDU UCHE


As the main opposition political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to zone its chairmanship position to the south which will deny southeast the much expected Presidential slot, the Pan Nigeria Presidency of Igbo Extraction Coalition (PANPIEC), the umbrella body coordinating all the groups championing for Igbo to become the next President of Nigeria after Muhammad Buhari in 2023 has hinted its alternative plans if APC and PDP fail to zone the Presidency to Igbo land.

The group's position was made known by its Spokesman in Akure, the Ondo state capital on September 25, 2021. In a media chat with newsmen, at the group's southwest zonal office in Akure, Prince Erondu Uche noted that the group is waiting with keen interest the outcome of the ongoing PDP's national meeting in Enugu and that of APC which will hold later. He said it will be unfair if the two major political parties deny Igbos this opportunity, noting that it will ridicule those who have supported these two parties. "If PDP and APC deny Igbos the opportunity to produce the next President by 2023, it will be unfair and I think everyone from Igbo land who have contributed to the growth and sustenance of these two political parties will know that their contributions are not appreciated".

On what to expect from the ongoing PDP national meeting in Enugu, Prince Erondu said "Governor Ugwuanyi's hands appear to be tied as he had confessed. What this means is that the outcome of the meeting had already been stereo typed". It will be noted that Governor Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, the chairman of the PDP zoning committee had said that he was not given the mandate to zone the office of the President. " This means that he is there to fulfill all righteousness. Why will he not be given the mandate to zone the office of the President? We are watching with keen interest ".

Political Analysts have attributed the lack of political will power of the southeast governors and political leaders to come out boldly to make demands on zoning the Presidency to Igbo land or show interest in contesting as the reason for the likes of Atiku Abubarka, Ahmed Tinubu, Aminu Tambowal, Kayode Fayemi, Yemi Osibanjo, Yahaya Bello and others to lay claim to the exalted position. The speculation making round is that Igbo political gladiators are only interested in becoming Vice to the northerners. Those alleged to be lobbying for the position of vice president are Chris Ngige, Nyesom Wike, Hope Uzodinma, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okwesilieze Nwodo, Rochas Okorocha, Chibuike Amaechi, Anyim Pius Anyim, Oby Ezekwesili, Ben Ayade among others.

On what PANPIEC will do if the two major political parties fail to zone the office of the President to Igbo land, Prince Erondu Uche said that the group will produce an Igbo candidate who will win the election. He maintained that with the wide network and different afflictions the group has, not only in Nigeria but globally, it will give maximum support to their candidate who will lead Nigeria in 2023. " We are not going back on our mandate. If APC and PDP fail to zone the Presidency to Igbo land, we may likely produce an Igbo candidate who will win the election. Almost all Nigerians want Igbo to become the next president in 2023. We have the network across Nigeria and globally, whoever we support will surely win because this will bring peace and stability to Nigeria and for the sake of equity, justice and fairness. Even you the press won't you support us? Are you not tired of reporting crisis and killings everyday? Igbo as President will bring healing", he said.

PANPIEC Board of Trustees, central working committee and national officers are expected to meet in Akure in October 2021 to appraise the outcome of the ongoing PDP national meeting in Enugu.

IPOB: ‘We are winning’, says Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer after Buhari’s visit.

The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is amazed by the resoluteness of IPOB members, his lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has said.

This is as he also said that officials of the Department of State of Service no longer treat Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers in a despicable manner.

He said this after the legal team visited the separatist leader in DSS custody on Thursday, the same day the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), visited Imo State.

The PUNCH reports that as a form of protest, IPOB ordered a sit-at-home during Buhari’s visit.

During the visit, Buhari wondered why some Igbo men are clamouring for separation.

He described as “unthinkable” attempts by any Igbo man to leave the country.

The lawyer had earlier faulted the reasons given by officials of the Department of State Services for stopping lawyers from visiting the IPOB leader.

In an update about the Thursday visit, the lawyer said, “I visited Our indefatigable Client-Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the company of his younger brother- Prince Emmanuel Kanu (Fine Boy), in apparent compliance with the guidelines for our routine visits.

“Our Client- Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has always been in a good spirit and his convictions have remained unwavering.

“We had far-reaching discussions that pertained to our professional services, and family concerns which were all addressed.

“He is amazed and impressed by the resoluteness of his millions of supporters and lovers of freedom. He is indeed, lacking in words to convey the depth of his gratitude and appreciation to you all.

“I am glad to inform millions of our supporters, wellwishers and Umuchineke, that following the outrage that greeted the despicable manner in which we were treated in the past weeks during these routine visits, the officials of the State Security Service have made a volte-face.

“We cannot hesitate to alert the world should there be any further change in their methodology, any day any time.

“Our Client- Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was very much impressed with the level of progress so far recorded by the legal team ably led by my humble self, and other people of good conscience.

Ugwuanyi Signs Anti-Open Grazing Bill Into Law

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has signed the anti-open grazing bill into law, at the Government House, Enugu.

The bill which is for a law to prohibit open grazing, regulate cattle ranching, and for connected purposes was recently passed by the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Recall that the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, had explained after the passage of the bill, that it would be cited as the “Prohibition of Open Grazing and Cattle Ranching Law of Enugu State” after the governor’s assent.
Gov. Ugwuanyi’s assent to the bill is expected to improve security and peace in the state.

‘Coup’: Military unit seizes power in Guinea, dissolves constitution

Soldiers who staged an uprising in Guinea’s capital on Sunday said in a short broadcast on state television that they have dissolved the constitution and the government in the West African state.

However, the defence ministry said an attack on the presidential palace by mutinous forces had been put down.

Heavy gunfire had broken out near the presidential palace in Conakry on Sunday morning, with several sources saying an elite national army unit led by a former French legionnaire, Mamady Doumbouya, was behind the unrest.

An unidentified soldier, draped in Guinea’s national flag and surrounded by eight other armed soldiers, said in the broadcast that they planned to form a transitional government and would give further details later.

The soldier spoke after videos shared on social media – which Reuters could not immediately authenticate – showed President Alpha Conde surrounded in a room by army special forces.

The defence ministry said the attemped insurgency had been put down.

“The presidential guard, supported by the loyalist and republican defence and security forces, contained the threat and repelled the group of assailants,” it said in a statement.

“Security and combing operations are continuing to restore order and peace.”

TBE Magazine: Enugu House of Assembly Passes Anti Open Grazing Bill Into Law

The Enugu State House of Assembly has passed the Prohibition of Open Grazing and Regulation of Cattle Ranching Bill into law.

This is coming two days after the House held a public hearing on the Bill. The bill was passed today 02/09/2021.

The passage the Bill followed the consideration of the Report of Public Hearing presented by Chairman of the joint Committee, Hon. Mrs Amaka Ugwueze and Emma Ugwuerua Ph.D and Okwu Chinedu Co chairmen of the Committee

The bill which was sponsored by the leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, would forestall farmers/herders clashes as well as killing and raping of women by herdsmen.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, had, during the public hearing, said that the anti-open grazing bill is not targeted at anybody or group but to promote peaceful co-existence in the state.

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu,SAN, has signed into Law the Anti-Grazing Bill passed by the State House of Assembly.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said the Governor Akeredolu signed the bill into Law in his office on Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

He said the move is in line with the resolution of the Southern Governors’ Forum at its last meeting in Lagos where September 1st was set as the deadline for Governors in Southern Nigeria to sign the Anti-Open Grazing Bill into law.

The statement reads “This is worthwhile and a very laudable development aimed at stemming needless instances of skirmishes, conflicts as well as infractions on the enviably peaceful disposition of the good people of Ondo State.

“It is very pertinent to aver and indeed, reiterate that the Law shall rather, engender a more cordial, mutually benefiting relationship amongst residents of the State irrespective of ethnicity, religion or creed. For emphasis, no particular group of persons is the target.

“While it is the hope of Government that all residents would take an ample advantage of this Law to enhance our socio-economic well being in Ondo State, compliance of same shall be given the utmost attention. Government shall pursue with vigour, through lawful means, to ensure strict compliance.

“In this regard, details of the new Law shall be made available to the public for proper information, more depth of understanding on contents as well as other relevant areas”, the statement said.
