Due to the ban on activities of Christian fellowships outside
the chapel of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), by the school
authority, Christian fellowships on the campus have
embarked on a seven-day prayer and fasting to seek
spiritual redress.
A memorandum sent to the students, dated 8th July 2015,
conveyed the new directive which the students must respect.
The memo partly reads: “The University of Lagos
Management has approved the no ‘noise policy’ and
directed that all social events such as parties, barbeque
nights, public announcements, rallies and campaign are no
longer allowed at all times within the vicinity of the faculties,
libraries, laboratories, lecture theatres and other academic
facilities.”
The university authority, however, approved alternative
centres for such events/activities, which include the student
union building premises, Lagoon Front and the UBA Park.
The memo also stated that the use of facilities such as
faculties, libraries, laboratories and other academic facilities
are prohibited for religious activities.
Meanwhile, the approved places for religious activities are
the chapel building, the University Mosque and the St.
Thomas Moore Catholic Chapel.
The UNILAG Joint Christian Fellowship may not have
accepted the school’s decision to stop their activities outside
the chapel as they have decided to take their mater to God.
A broadcast sent among Christian students after reading the
memo from the school authority reads: “Following the
directive of school authority against all fellowship activities
outside the chapel (UNILAG), UNILAG Joint Christian
Fellowship would be embarking on seven days fasting and
Prayer with meetings by 6pm everyday at the Chapel of
Christ Our Light (UNILAG).”
A student, presently at the College of Medicine, Idiaraba
Campus, Ayobami Ayodele, who was once an executive at
the fellowship affiliated to the Redeemed Christian Church
of God, told Newswatch Times that no such thing is
happening at the Idiaraba campus.
“I’m not on the main campus but no such thing is happening
here. I heard about the directives as well, I don’ think the
move will be welcomed by the students. This will definitely
threaten the religious freedom which has hitherto been
enjoyed by students. On the other hand, I think this should
stimulate the Christian community to practice Christianity
more as a life than as a mere religion because Christianity
isn’t about the preponderance of “religious activities,”
Ayodele said.

As President Muhammadu Buhari travels to the United
States (US) today to engage President Barack Obama in talks
on economic, security, financial and anti-graft issues, it has
emerged that he has ordered the preparation of the case-file
that would lead to the prosecution of the indicted persons in
the $182 million Halliburton bribery scandal.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that

US government of evidence to
show that Buhari was ready to
prosecute the suspects in
Nigeria for their roles in the
bribery scandal before it could
partner other European
countries in releasing the $141million dollars allegedly
looted from Nigeria and lodged in various overseas banks.
According to top security sources, Buhari, based on the
outcome of investigations by the panel set up to look into
the scandal, is scheduled to tell Americans officials during
this week’s visit that all those indicted, including former
Heads of State, a former Vice President, two former Group
Managing Directors of the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation, will face prosecution to defend themselves.
To further convince the US officials that the kangaroo trial
that took place during the Jonathan administration, which
saw a former Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to the
President being arraigned and then let off the hook
following alleged connivance of certain government
institutions, will not re-occur, the President will tell them
that private legal practitioners, who cannot compromise
because of past government patronage, will be
commissioned to handle the case.
It will be recalled that the recent directive by Buhari to
reopen the Halliburton bribery case led to the discovery that
the $26.5 million plea bargain money released by the oil
servicing firm as part of efforts to shield the company from
prosecution was not in any government account.

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has urged Christians, who embark on holy pilgrimage to Israel see it as an opportunity to intercede for Nigeria and not for politics or religion.

According to him, the warning becomes necessary because of the ongoing security challenges, especially the Boko Haram menace, confronting the country.

A statement on Saturday in Abuja by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission by its Head of Media, Mr. Celestine Ogugua, said Gowon said this while featuring as the guest of honour during the maiden Jerusalem pilgrims sensitisation/appreciation dinner organised by the commission.

He said, “The sensitisation of pilgrims is to pray for ourselves and the nation and not just another adventure in tourism. Pilgrimage is a spiritual exercise where you pray for yourself, the nation and your family. It is not for politics or religion.”

Gowon encouraged sponsors of pilgrims over the years not to relent in doing good, but to continue to be a source of blessing to the lives of others, who could not afford the cost of pilgrimage.

The ex-Head of State commended the Executive Secretary of NCPC, Mr. John Kennedy Opara, for his excellence, hard work and commitment, which had changed the face of Christian pilgrimage in Nigeria, adding, “You lose more when you do not appreciate former deeds of kindness.”

Opara thanked all Jerusalem pilgrims for honouring the invitation to dine together.

“You have gathered to affirm greatness and with God on our side, we shall succeed in this drive,” he said.

He commended a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for his support and yearly sponsorship of thousands of Southern and northern Christians to the pilgrimage during his tenure as governor.

He also informed stakeholders about the four phases of pilgrimage of the commission, which are the Easter pilgrimage (March – April); Youth pilgrimage (July); Family pilgrimage (August) and the main pilgrimage usually held between October and December.
