February 1, 2012 saw Facebook grow into a real business with its listing on the New York stock exchange, though the excitement was short lived with plunging stock prices and calls for him to step down as CEO. Facebook is estimated to have over 845 million active monthly users and its website features at least 2.7 billion daily likes and comments. Of these million of users are over five million Nigerians, male and female, young and old who also have active accounts on other social media sites. The number of Facebook users will increase daily as emphasis as shifted from just the PC to the mobile phones which now have increased features and price reductions daily. The security risks on social media sites are vast with cases of rape, kidnap and death, it is sad that some people have found a way to exploit the technology that has managed to breach the distance between friends, loved ones, to make new friends and connect the world. Directed by Clarence Peters, Ruby’s Video for the beautiful song: OKAY is finally out. It’s a simple poignant portrayal of the struggle love often is: the passion, the pain, the bliss, and the heartbreak of moments when you realize it hasn’t been worth it, and you’re better off alone. https://techloy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Hugo-Obi-of-Maliyo-Games.png Recently, we caught up with Hugo Obi to discuss his gaming company’s pioneering and revolutionary strides within Nigeria’s emerging gaming start-up industry. Hugo Obi, is a former Financial Analyst at General Electric in London and a graduate of International Business, Finance and Economics at the University of Manchester, UK, who founded MALIYO Games in May 2012 with the goal of sharing the experiences of everyday Africans with a global audience through games. Dressed in an Olympic-styled tee-shirt on top his summer combat shorts, I sat down with Hugo at a bar in the Lekki area of Lagos one bright and lovely Saturday evening. First came MALIYO, launching 6 game titles (now 10 titles) with African narratives, and now we have KULUYA launching today with hopes of staking its hand in the African gaming space with a first game ‘Monkey Run’. KULUYA is a game development outfit out of the city of Lagos, Nigeria. The team of 10 intent to change the gaming landscape in Africa with over a hundred game titles – including: Masa, Snake, Zulu, Point & Kill, Ole, Agbero, Bush Meat, and Mosquito. Hugo Obi, the founder of Maliyo Games launched in April this year and is aiming squarely at what he calls the “casual games” market:”There are four core local elements: characters, narrative, sound and environment.” There are seven games available on the Maliya.com site: Adanma, Class Fight, Mosquito Squasher, Football Goalie, Okada Ride, Aboki and Kidnapped. Okada Ride is based on the motorcycle taxis that swarm dangerously like angry wasps around Lagos: the character in the game is trying to get a job and has to dodge potholes and traffic. Mosquito Squasher is as simple as the name implies: you take revenge online on Nigeria’s many mosquitos. Play Games Here: >> http://maliyo.com https://www.maliyo.com/games/images/default_featured.jpg The games are free to play online on its web site and are not downloadable. Again the numbers of people playing is in the tens because the games have only been out for two weeks and there’s not yet been a concerted marketing push. The next stage is to build a mobile pay-for version which it will co-brand and market with the Nokia Ovi store. It is also looking for similar co-branding opportunities with the Samsung and MTN stores. As Obi told us:”We’ve built seven games in seven weeks so we’ve shown we can do it. This is a big, big opportunity. You’re looking at the 44 million in Nigeria who access the Internet via mobile so it will be an insanely huge opportunity.” As seen on Balacing Act Africa http://www.balancingact-africa.com/news/en/issue-no-609/top-story/online-games-sector/en |
[As seen on CP-Africa] Maliyo Games, a Nigerian gaming company co-founded by a Nigerian in the Diaspora, Hugo Obi has been releasing locally relevant games to Nigerians online. Its games like “Mosquito Smasher,” “Aboki” and “Okada Ride” among others are intuitive and easy to use, depicting every day Nigerian life. https://www.maliyo.com/games/ We caught up briefly with Hugo Obi to understand more about the company’s plans and how he started out. According to Hugo, he started Maliyo Games because he has a passion for web and mobile based content. During a recent visit to Nigeria, he said he noticed that the country had undergone many changes since he left for the United Kingdom many years ago for his undergraduate education. He specifically noticed gaming as an untapped area in the Nigerian market and thus decided to launch Maliyo Games . https://www.maliyo.com/games/ Play MALIYO Games Here >> https://www.maliyo.com/games/ https://www.cp-africa.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maliyo-games-300x194.png |
