Computers3 Tech Giants Partners To Boost Network Connectivity In Lagos Nigeria. by techbloga(op): 2:29pm On Dec 14, 2017
3 Tech Companies to boost Nigeria network has announced the completion of a joint innovative project set to help those suffering from poor network connectivity in the state.

Facebook, MainOne and Tizeti are teaming together on a project that will leverage MainOne’s fiber connectivity, Tizeti’s twenty brand-new solar-powered towers, and Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi.

This is expected to boost internet connectivity in several parts of Lagos, particularly Lagos Mainland – Ajao Estate, Surulere, Ikeja, Omole, Magodo, Gbagada, Oworonshoki, Bariga, Anthony Village, Ogudu, Ojota, Ketu and Alapere.

Speaking on the partnership, Tizeti Chief Executive Officer, Edward Kendall Ananyi, said,

Access to quick and reliable unlimited Wi-Fi property has been a tangle for many Nigerian residential customers and little businesses for too long. This partnership aims to demonstrate a property and efficient resolution to the under-served areas of city State through our solar-powered, always-on Wi-Fi towers, and sturdy web information measure from MainOne.
According to a statement and plans set on-board, Tizeti has already built and will operate the solar-powered Wi-Fi Towers across Lagos while MainOne will provide multiple Gbps internet bandwidth to the outdoor towers via a mix of fiber-optic and microwave backhaul connections. This internet service will be delivered to end users via Wi-Fi, including via Express Wi-Fi hotspots deployed by Tizeti in Lagos.

Commenting on the partnership, MainOne’s CEO, Funke Opeke, lauded Tizeti and Facebook’s commitment to improving the quality and lowering costs of Internet services in Lagos.

“This partnership supports the three partners’ shared goal of connecting more people to high quality internet services in the most cost-effective way,” they stated.

“This project leverages our Internet capacity, investment in terrestrial fiber-optic infrastructure and points of presence for service delivery across Lagos State. We’re committed to improving the quality of access and accelerating the digital transformation of small businesses,” MainOne’s CEO, Funke Opeke also said

For Facebook, Ibrahima Ba, Facebook Connectivity Programs, said the company is committed to working with partners across Africa and elsewhere to support connectivity initiatives and develop better internet infrastructure in communities that lack reliable and affordable access.

CareerHow To Improve Technical Skills At Work by techbloga(op): 4:09am On Dec 11, 2017
In this article, you’re going to read about “How to improve technical skills at work“, I’m creating this article to create an awareness of how technical skills are being highly demanded by employers and how one can easily obtain work technical skills But first of all, you might want to know a brief meaning of technical skills before we jump into the main course.

Technical skills which are the knowledge and abilities needed to accomplish mathematical, engineering, scientific or computer-related duties, as well as other specific tasks relating to technology.

Like some people believe, technical skills isn’t really a must-know or requirement to becoming a competent employee, but having a good technology knowledge or being a tech savvy like engaging in tech-focused discussion with IT professionals or trying to fix a technical issues in the office, this will indeed add real big advantage in your personal life and career.

In previous post, I talked about reason why you must learn technical skills, and I highly recommend that for you to read if of course you want to know the importance of being a techie and how it could influence your personal and professional life positively.

Without wasting must time which I’m sure it’s precious to you, let’s get to business!

https://www.techsphere.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/How-To-Develop-Technical-Skills-1020x560.png

1. Read Tutorials

Don’t waste that little time you get in your office on social media, Yeh! I know chatting is cool at some point but you have to watch out for your priority if you really need something greater and that is called SACRIFICING.

Research has proven that reading tutorials (online or offline) is one of the best ways to boost ones knowledge on tech. Although, getting feed online and offline also have their respective pros and cons e.g reading online is free but are not always professionally written while reading offline (from a book etc) are always professionally written with clear language but they aren’t always free. So you see, what can i say? Use any option that best rock your boat!

Additionally to online reading, learn how to use Google or other search engines to your advantage, it’s important to learn how to correctly pose a question for search and how to use search engines to find good-detailed tutorials online.

2. Volunteer on Technical Projects

Seek out opportunities in your place of work to volunteer on technical projects; this will of course allow you to gain valuable experience from working with other technical members of the team. Volunteering gives excellent access to projects that might ordinarily not be available to you in the corporate world. Volunteers can participate in monthly meetings, meet with clients, and become valued members of the project. This will really boost your work technical skills in your workplace

3. Hang out with Tech Experts

If you spend enough time with technical people, some of their knowledge will rub off on you. Even geeks learn from other geeks, but if you aren’t much of a geek yourself, a great way to accelerate the development of your work technical skills is to roll out tech experts within your environment and the best way to do such is by volunteering which makes one make fast friends.

Engage personally with their projects and learn how things are done, discuss with them on how implementation works, the logic of the application also becomes easy to grasp. Discuss with the tech savvies more often than not, they will be willing to explain what they are doing.

4. Embrace a variety of software

General software engagement improves with breadth of experience, so use many different software programs (online or offline) to improve your overall ability to get things done through software, don’t be too limited in just getting a task done on a software and all, try also to see and learn to use other advance option and using many different interfaces, think of it as technical intuition.

You’ll learn a lot about interface design from image editing programs, programming tools, and of course computer games. The greater the variety of interfaces you experience, the faster you’ll be able to learn and master each new program you use.

5. Practicalize your skill

Practicing only ‘Read and Learn’ isn’t ideal for your tech skill, remember we called it tech skill, right? and this is not like a school where you’re only require to write down what you just read during test, this is far more than that it’s just like sending a trained soldier to his duty post or a warfront, it is his duty and purpose isn’t it? Getting to learn technical skills uses this same principle which is putting your knowledge into proper use or solving a real life problem.

By practicing this, it adds the real value it promises to you both professionally and personally.

Conclusion

The world is vastly and rapidly changing digitally whereas adopting new advanced technologies in our real world, DO NOT be left in the cold! Do something today and let your skills pay your bills.

But most important thing is to be willing to learn something new everyday and be excited about technology. The benefits will naturally follow.

PhonesSMS Texting Is 25 Years Old! by techbloga(op): 4:16am On Dec 09, 2017
You might have for once imagine “How old is SMS?” Well reading through this article would tell you exactly what you need to know about texting.

Texting which is the composing and sending of electronic messages, consisting of alphabetic and numeric characters was first sent in history on the 3rd of December 1992, it was sent by a British engineer Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis, an executive at British Telecom Vodafone, who was attending his company’s holiday party in Newbury, England.

It was typed on a computer, and was sent to Jarvis’s Orbitel 901, a mobile phone that would take up most of your laptop backpack, and read: “Merry Christmas”. But Jarvis couldn’t send a reply because there was no way to send a text from a phone in those days.

But texting didn’t take off over night. First it had to be incorporated into the then-budding GSM standard. Matti Makkonen also known as (Father of SMS) who brought about the idea of SMS back in 1984 at a Telecommunications Conference, feels the technology actually was launched in 1994 when Nokia unveiled its 2010 mobile phone, the first device that let people easily write messages.

Although Papworth is only credited with sending the first text message in history, While Matti Makkonen was the first who suggested SMS.

Research says,
Today, about 97 percent of phone users use text messaging, and along the way, a new set of sub-languages based on abbreviations and keyboard-based imagery has evolved. More than 561 billion text messages were sent worldwide in June 2014, about 18.7 billion texts sent every day.
Texting has become so popular that most persons would rather type it than orally say. Smartphone users are sending and receiving five times as many texts compared with the number of phone calls each day, according to the International Smartphone Mobility Report by mobile data tracking firm Infomate.

PhonesGoogle AI Tech Tells You When Strangers Peek Over Your Phone by techbloga(op): 12:28am On Dec 06, 2017
Google is has been working on “Google’s facial recognition feature”, a new security feature that can protect you against strangers stealing glances at your phone over your shoulder.

Google scientists has demonstrate a new feature that could protect and alert you against snoopers looking at your phone over your shoulder likely in public places.

https://www.techsphere.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/IMG_20171203_162658_111.jpg

Google’s facial recognition feature or better referred to as “Electronic Screen Protector,” uses artificial intelligence and facial recognition to alert you when someone else is looking at your screen which was developed by Google researchers Hee Jung Ryu and Florian Schroff. The new feature, which is still being worked on, was demonstrated in a YouTube video post in September.

This tool is designed to protect you from corporate spies or nosey strangers stealing sensitive data from your smartphone screen especially in crowded places. The feature appears to use the phone’s front-facing camera and facial recognition feature to detect if someone else is looking at your phone. It then tells you that someone might be snooping.

When a stranger’s gaze is detected as the phone’s owner types a text message, the screen automatically switches to the front camera and uses a giant rainbow to point to the stranger’s face. When the stranger looks away, the screen turns back to the text messaging app.

With this, Google’s facial recognition feature makes it ideal for Android phone users and helps reduce data theft rate among phone users.

In our increasingly mobile lifestyles, everyone from CEOs to interns find themselves working on the go from their phones. People may be checking email or other sensitive corporate information in public. And this feature could help protect that data from being glanced at by the wrong sets of eyes.

The researchers plan to present this technology innovation at the 2017 Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) Conference in Long Beach, California, in December. Google hasn’t announced plans integrate the functionality in its software. The company wasn’t available for comment as at the time of getting this report.

ComputersTwitter Goes Into Lite Version, Covers More Market by techbloga(op): 11:11am On Dec 02, 2017
Twitter has been working earnestly in the past few years and doubling up its efforts to boost its user numbers by expanding the availability of its Twitter lite version (a lightweight Android app) to more markets in more continent.

Twitter lite version, which was first introduced in April, also made available on any mobile browser for users. It then rolled out a native Android incarnation of the app in the Philippines a few months later.

But today, Twitter Lite version is going to be available in 24 more markets across the Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Speaking of these new markets, it includes: Nigeria Algeria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Malaysia, Nepal, Panama, Peru, Serbia, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, and Venezuela.

Twitter said,

Tweets sent from Twitter Lite have grown by more than 50 percent since it was first debuted in April, though that doesn’t really give us a clear indication of its overall pickup.
Twitter which recently hit 330 million month users, Substiquently they announced the possibility to extend display user name to 50 characters to ease stress searching for a user who’s on Twitter

Twitter has struggled to grow its user base, as it’s one of their mission in bringing the world together irrespective of race and tribe, also revealing a modest 4 percent year-on-year (YoY) rise during its last earnings report. (It now claims 330 million monthly users globally.) Emerging markets could prove key to its continued growth, but restrictive or expensive data plans — or limited space on a device — could preclude users from spending much time on the social network. And that’s where Twitter Lite comes into play, with its faster loading times and optimized data consumption and a built-in “data saver” mode to ensure only select images or videos are downloaded.

Twitter is the latest in a long line of tech firms that have embraced lightweight versions (Twitter lite version) of their core apps. Facebook launched a Lite incarnation of its core service back in 2015, followed by Messenger Lite a year later. Elsewhere, Shazam launched a stripped-down version of its music-recognition app last year, while Japan’s Line has also introduced a mobile data-friendly app.

5G which stands for fifth-generation network technology. Which It will improve the digital world. Like other big leaps in mobile technology, it will speed up download and upload speed, speeds that are reportedly around 100 times faster than today’s cellular connections and 10 times faster than our speediest home broadband service.

Substiquently, it’s also expected to accelerate new technologies like augmented reality, assist autonomous cars to send time-critical messages to one another, and link to the network everything from pollution sensors to health monitors.

The hype around 5G has been brewing for more than a year, but we’re finally starting to see the early research and development bear fruit. 5G networks are expected to arrive in 2019. The earliest deployments will likely be “fixed wireless” connections, which bring fast broadband to your house without having to dig a trench for a fiber-optic cable. But chipmaker Qualcomm has also said 5G will come to your phone that year, too.

Current generation 4G LTE networks are carrying most of this traffic. Ericsson said that by the end of this year, 4G LTE networks will be the dominant mobile access technology in the world. It’s estimated to reach 5.5 billion subscriptions and cover more than 85 percent of the world’s population by the end of 2023.

ComputersTwitter Hit 330 Million Monthly Users by techbloga(op): 1:17pm On Nov 24, 2017
Twitter who recently tested the 280-character-tweet which is also reputable and widely recognized social media currently has 330 million active users, adding 4 million new monthly users last quarter, up from 326 million last quarter and 317 million this time last year. While this is not a very huge overall improvement compared to Facebook which has about 2billion users, user growth is one of the big things Twitter and its investors have been looking forward to have.

According to reports, daily active users are also up 14 percent year over year, though Twitter didn’t give an exact figure on where those are at overall.

However, Twitter said it had miscounted monthly active users since late 2014, overestimating growth for the prior two quarters by 1 to 2 million. The adjusted figures mean that the company actually lost users during the summer, instead of staying even with its results in the spring.

Twitter reported revenue of $590 million, down from $616 million this time last year, a four percent drop. Still, the company’s losses narrowed, with a net loss of $21 million this quarter, down from $103 million this time last year.

Twitter’s numbers remain surprisingly low compared to other social networks — particular ones owned by Facebook. Instagram has 800 million monthly active users, having added 200 million in little more than the last year. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger have over 1 billion monthly users each, and Facebook itself has over 2 billion. Snapchat, which has itself seen slow growth, only discloses daily active users, but it’s at around half of what Twitter has in a month, with 173 million people using the app each day.

ComputersGame Of Thrones Alleged Hacker Sets To Be Executed by techbloga(op): 2:30am On Nov 24, 2017
A federal grand jury has charged HBO alleged hacker, accused of ruining HBO’s summer.

A hacker in July allegedly hacked into HBO network and leaked a script for an upcoming episode of popular series “Game of Thrones,” as well as unreleased episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Ballers” and “The Deuce.” After which he Demanded $6 million in bitcoin from HBO and threatened to release more sensitive content if the media company doesn’t meet up.

The US FBI has already identified the HBO alleged hacker as Behzad Mesri from Iran, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday. The indictment came from a grand jury for the US District Court for the Southern District for New York.

Behzad Mesri, reportedly also known as “Skote Vahshat,” described as a highly skilled hacker who has worked for the Iranian military, attacking nuclear software, Israeli infrastructure and rival armies, according to the indictment. He has also been a member of the Turk Black Hat Security team, a hacking group based out of Iran that vandalized hundreds of websites around the world, the indictment states.

As funny as this may sound,
Joon Kim, An acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York, during a press conference on Tuesday said,

“Winter has come for Bezhad Mesri, He will forever be looking over his shoulder, and if he isn’t, he should be.”

HBO Media also declined to comment on the charges but said it has been working with law enforcement since the early stages of the cyber attack.

“As far as the criminal case is concerned, we prefer to leave any comments to the US Attorney’s Office,” Said an HBO spokesman.

In the threat, Beshad Mesri claimed to have 1.5 terabytes of HBO’s data and demanded $5.5 million in bitcoin. Three days later, Mesri allegedly bumped the ransom up to $6 million in bitcoin.

In communications with HBO, The HBO alleged hacker used the name “Little Finger,” a reference to a “Game of Thrones” character known for being devious and cunning. He also taunted the network with images, including a photo of the Night King from “Game of Thrones” with the message “Good luck to HBO,” according to the indictment.

On July 23, Mesri allegedly sent an anonymous email to HBO, stating: “Hi to All losers! Yes it’s true! HBO is hacked! … Beware of heart attack!!!”

Mesri is now on the FBI’s most wanted list. He’s been charged with accessing a computer without authorization, wire fraud, computer fraud, identity theft and extortion.

The charges against hackers outside the US serve more as a symbolic measure for the Justice Department, sending a message that there will be consequences for cyberattacks.

PhonesYoutube Plans To Protect Kids From Disturbing Contents by techbloga(op): 1:59am On Nov 24, 2017
The popular American video-sharing website ‘YouTube’ takes step to exclude YouTube explicit content and inappropriate videos, ads and comments content away from kids following a five-point plan

After recent criticism from users about YouTube not doing enough to crack down on disturbing and exploitative videos aimed at children which end up corrupting the young ones, the Google-owned video service on Wednesday announced a five-point plan to “tighten” its approach on displaying family-friendly content to a categorized persons.

YouTube also added that it is trying to curb its explicit content to make the video site safer for kids and for everyone.

YouTube new Guidelines

1. Tougher application of community guidelines and faster enforcement through technology.
2. Removing ads from inappropriate videos targeting families.
3. Blocking inappropriate comments on videos featuring minors.
4. Providing guidance for creators who make family-friendly content.
5. Engaging and learning from experts.

These rules are in respect of reports earlier that exposed flaws in YouTube’s algorithms and screening policies.

And more recently, the company removed several videos that featured children in abusive or vulnerable situations only after BuzzFeed brought the videos to the company’s attention.

The rules follow reports earlier this month that exposed flaws in YouTube’s algorithms and screening policies. The controversy stemmed from YouTube Kids, designed as a more child-friendly version of the video site. The service’s filters failed to recognize or pull down some videos that feature disturbing imagery but are aimed at children — like Mickey Mouse laying in a pool of blood, or a claymation version of Spider Man urinating on Elsa, the Disney princess from “Frozen.”

Videos which featured children doing inprovocative activities like exercising which was followed up with inappropriate or sexual comments from viewers, something YouTube is attempting to curb them all with its new guidelines.

Regulating a family-friendly content for users isn’t the only thing YouTube is working on as earlier last week, Google said it’s cracking down on terror videos in an effort to fight against online extremism and YouTube explicit content.

ComputersGoogle Still Tracks You Even With Your Location Services Off by techbloga(op): 1:01am On Nov 23, 2017
Smartphones with no sim, no location service on or even that which has just be reset to its factory mode still keeps tracks of you and sends information to Google.

It's been proven that Google has been collecting Android phones' locations data even when location services are turned off, a a revelation made by an investigation that Google tracks you.

Quartz, an online media publication observed that android smartphones mutually works hand in hand with others thereby collecting the addresses of a nearby mobile phone masts and sends them back to Google.

The data collected has no bound that even if the service location (GPS) were turned off on the phones, no installed or pre-installed apps, or no SIM card in the phone. It collects data regardless of all these and send them to Google and Google tracks you wherever you go.

"The result is that Google, the unit of Alphabet behind Android, has access to data about individuals' locations and their movements that go far beyond a reasonable consumer expectation of privacy,"

Wrote Quartz reporter Keith Collins.

Also, a Google spokesperson told Quartz that the cell tower addresses were included in information sent to the system Google uses to manage push notifications and messages on Android phones for the past 11 months. They were never used or stored and the company is taking steps to end the practice.

It's no longer a secret that Google tracks you with your phone's location at every instance in time, many of the apps we use on a regular bases wouldn't work as well without the device location services turned on.

Also, we the end users also have the right to tell Google through your Android phone to remove your location history from your Google Maps Timeline and stop keeping screenshots of your old searches if you're so concerned about your privacy.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this.

ComputersFacebook Messenger Now Supports 4K Photos Sharing by techbloga(op): 2:10am On Nov 22, 2017
Facebook just rolled out a cool feature for its Messenger app "Facebook Messenger 4k photo sharing". Over the years, Facebook Messenger has been an important way for people to communicate with families and friends even across the globe, and it’s not only just by text-based means. Reports states that more than 17 billion photos are shared by the 1.3 billion monthly active users worldwide on monthly bases.

To enhance good users experience, Facebook has added support called "Facebook Messenger 4k photo sharing" for high-resolution photos, meaning you can share high-sized pictures with a calm mind and you won’t have to worry about the quality of those hi-res images you took on your last trip degrading when you share them with loved ones.

Available today on iPhone and Android, though for now it's only available for handful of countries but over the coming weeks, users in other countries will be also be able to utilize the new feature.

For those who already have access, you just update Facebook Messenger, start a conversation as normal, and tap the camera roll icon. Find a photo you want to share and designate the person who’ll receive it, and Facebook will send the highest possible resolution.

Users can share with friends, family, and businesses images with resolutions of up to 4096 x 4096 pixels. Facebook promises that even at that high a resolution, the photos will still be sent just as quickly.

While Facebook’s announcement today suggests that this is peer-to-peer photo messaging, smartphone cameras get more powerful, people don’t want to sacrifice quality just to share pictures with their friends, and any app that doesn’t support the native resolution will be a turn-off.

Support for the Facebook Messenger 4k photo sharing isn’t a first for Facebook, as the company has long allowed such media to exist on its platform, whether it’s 360 videos, standard videos, or photos. And more technology companies are including support for 4K images, such as Google.

ComputersUber Now Lets You Share Your Live Location With Drivers For Easy Location by techbloga(op): 1:22am On Nov 22, 2017
Uber has announced a number of new updates today as it looks to enhance an easy location "Uber live location" using GPS to share there actual location at every instance between drivers and riders to help easily find each other on busy thoroughfares and junctions.

With Uber live location sharing, riders are able to opt in and share their real-time location with drivers. Riders can activate this feature by tapping the little grey icon at the bottom right-hand side of the screen — when they tap this, they’ll be asked to confirm that they’re happy to share their location, and the icon will turn blue when it’s active. This may be helpful in particularly busy locations or when it’s not immediately clear where a designated pickup spot is.

Also, Uber live location sharing feature automatically disables itself when the trip starts, it can also be manually disabled any point in time.

It’s worth noting here that this is an extension of the existing trip-tracking functionality within Uber that allows riders to share their real-time location with loved ones. Elsewhere, other popular apps have also embraced live location sharing, including Google Maps, which announced such a feature in March, followed by Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

GamingCandy Crush Hits 2.73 Billion Downloads by techbloga(op): 3:22am On Nov 18, 2017
In the third quarter that ended September 30, the match-3 Candy Crush game generated more than $250 million in revenue, up 97 percent from the same period a year ago, according to measurement firm Sensor Tower. More than 1 trillion game rounds have been played in the game since its launch, and 350 trillion candies have been swiped to date. At this rate, the $5.9 billion that Activision Blizzard paid to acquire King in 2015 looks like a deal.

Candy Crush Saga is the most popular mobile game in the U.S. after a dramatic comeback in the third quarter. As the mobile game crossed its fifth anniversary this week, its tally has crossed 2.73 billion sugary downloads.

CEO of King, Riccardo Zacconi, has been there right from the beginning. Candy Crush Saga was one of 200 games that King created on its skill-based web site. The company began methodically converting those games to run on the Facebook Desktop, and the ones that were successful were converted to mobile. Candy Crush Saga did well on Facebook, but it really took off on mobile. It has been in the top-ten grossing apps for four years now. King continuously updates the game, which has 2,800 levels now.

Candy Crush Saga social media fan base is over 80 million. That’s not bad for a game made with a tiny team led by Sebastian Knutsson in Stockholm, Sweden. King now has more than 2,000 employees worldwide and more than 293 million monthly active users. And it has spun out new games like Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Jelly Saga. It even has its own game show. For the fifth anniversary, King launched a bunch of in-game rewards for players.

In an interview,

GamesBeat: Why have you stayed with this so long, given that it’s been so successful? Some other people might decide to take it easy after this kind of success?

Riccardo Zacconi: [laughs] Well, it never stops, you know? There are always opportunities ahead that you want to take. A lot to do. There’s even more out there in the planning phase.

GamesBeat: What do you think here at the fifth anniversary of Candy Crush Saga?

Zacconi: It’s amazing. If you look at what we’ve accomplished, this year has been extraordinary. It’s the third quarter of growth for the company in bookings over all, and Candy specifically has done extremely well. Mobile is growing. It’s been the highest ever mobile growth in bookings. The franchise is doing amazingly well. We’re very pleased with how the team is done.

Of course, you can’t sleep. There’s a lot more we need to do in terms of innovation and thinking about the next level. But the team is kicking ass.

GamesBeat: What sort of tweaking are you guys doing that makes this game do so well in its fifth year? Is it just advertising it to the right people? Is it getting players to come back?

Zacconi: First of all, it’s focusing on the players who are in the game, keeping them entertained, surprising them every day. That’s the essence of what we’re doing. We are in a business where you don’t pay a subscription. You don’t have to pay anything to play, in fact, and so the barriers to exit are extremely low. Therefore, we need to keep them entertained every day. It’s surprising the user in the three minutes they play, whenever they have a break, and when they come back every time they come back to something fun.

We started by launching, every two weeks, a fresh level. Now we’re doing those every week, at least. Every day we’re releasing new content that’s time-limited. If you don’t come today, or this week, it’s not there anymore. You have to play today. We’re continuously innovating in the live game, releasing new features. We never stop offering new content to our players. That’s the essence of what we do.

We found out that it’s so much easier to reach out to players who are active today in the game, rather than offering a new game. Of course we’re working on new things. About 50 percent of our capacity is focused on new things. But the players are there today in our game, and that’s where we have a big opportunity. That’s what we’re working on.

GamesBeat: It certainly looks like you can’t take this for granted. Other games have started to slip in the stats, and they’ve been doing less advertising. It seems like things people thought would last forever can still be pulled down by gravity.

Zacconi: That was the initial assumption of the market, if you think back to when we went public. Certainly we’ve disproven that. It’s taken us a lot of work to come up with content that makes sense for our players. That’s what we also see from Activision and Blizzard. They believe in their franchises, in an IP that’s going to stay there forever and grow. That’s our strategy.

GamesBeat:
Going back to the beginning, you had a lot of games on the web. You put them on Facebook as well. Eventually you moved to the focus on mobile games. Do you credit that process with surfacing Candy Crush as the ideal mobile game?

Zacconi: Absolutely. It’s not luck that brought us here. It was a lot of hard work. We developed more than 200 games covering all different aspects of casual, with all different genres and variations in those genres. We learned a lot with each game. Candy Crush, match three—we didn’t invent the match three genre, but we innovated considerably in that genre, both in the gameplay and in the framework around the gameplay.

Before we launched Candy Crush, casual was already the most popular genre. The most players were playing casual games, most of them women. But no company has ever managed to take a game with such big reach in casual to this level of commercial success. That success was created based on creating customer value in mobile. The roots of this are in a very deep understanding of casual and the experience we built on to get there.
