Career5 Most Effective Ways To Boost Your Tech Skill by techbloga(op): 2:32am On Nov 14, 2017
I personally love taking on a new technology invention and figuring it out; it's part of that whole lifelong learning thing. In 5 Powerful Reasons You Should Learn Tech Skills, I explained why it’s important to develop your tech skills as an integral part of your personal development. Learning technical skills can build you up, increase your professionalism and income, and enable you to extract the most bang-per-buck from your technology purchases.

So i made the compilation of awesome ways you can effectively build up your tech skill regardless of your current tech state which are summarized below:
5 Ways To Improve One's Tech Skill

1. Read online tutorials

Firstly, learn how to use Google to your advantage. It’s important to learn how to correctly pose a question for search and how to use Google to find good-detailed tutorials online. Besides online tutorials are accessible, timely, and of course free compared to books, though the only disadvantage is that they usually aren’t professionally edited, which can leave them lacking in completeness and/or clarity. However, they often sport other features like abundant interlinking, user comments, and infographics Sometimes the comments are better than the original information, since they can contain lots of additional tips and suggestions.

2. Surround yourself with tech geeks

Spend enough time with people who are technically more advanced than you are, at lease everyone is a learner at some point in doing so their knowledge will rub off on you. Even geeks learn from other geeks, but if you aren’t much of a geek yourself, alternatively a great way to accelerate the development of your technical skills is to join an online forum of a chosen field.

Once you join a computer forum or other geek-ridden association, volunteering is a great way to make fast friends. These nonprofit associations are frequently in need of volunteers for committee and project work; even if your technical skills are weak, they often just need raw manpower. Once you start interacting with tech-professionals you will earn much knowledge about the real-times cases problems faced in the industry.

3. Learn programming language

Programming is the art of instructing a computer to perform specific task. The key to accomplishing this feat is learning to think like a computer first. Programming is one of the most mentally challenging tasks a human being can perform, but nothing compares to the satisfaction of engineering a piece of code to solve a specific problem. Ask any programmer.

As a beginner there are bunch of languages you can learn to program depending on your focus.

Places You Can Learn Programming

Codecademy is a good source with many lessons on HTML & CSS, Javascript, jQuery, Python, Ruby, and PHP. The advantage of this online academy is a variety of courses by their topic, knowledge level, and their free online accessibility.
Udacity is a site with free (and paid) college courses on web development, software engineering and more. The huge benefit of this kind of learning resource is the verified certificate you can get – this is more than just an online video, or eBook that you download somewhere on the web.

While humans certainly aren’t as precise or predictable as machines — we have major compatibility issues, sometimes even with ourselves — a programmer’s mindset can generate effective solutions to very human problems. Intuition is a big factor in both personal development and programming, but I like that there’s a structured fallback process that works in both fields. It’s much harder to use this process in personal development though because we know how a computer thinks, but we’re still figuring out how humans think.

4. Create your own web site

Setting a goal to create a basic web site is a great way to learn practical skills like HTML and CSS. When you have a compelling reason to learn, your goals will accelerate your learning, and you’ll learn with a focus on practical application.

With a website, you have the freedom to post nearly anything you want. Being able to do anything and experiment with tools on the website is a great way of learning. You can also use the website to learn whatever you’ve read from online tutorials.

5. Look for Shortcuts

One of the best ways to be tech savvy is to look for shortcuts for everything. It can be as simple as using a keyboard shortcut to open a program or installing software to help you work faster. If you get really good, maybe you can even write your own program that will help you and your coworkers be more productive.

PhonesTwitter Expands Display Name To 50 Characters by techbloga(op): 12:06am On Nov 11, 2017
Prior to the recent update on 280-character tweet limit, Twitter now lets users expand their display names to up to 50 characters long, up from 20 including emojis.

It comes as a relief to many users who have bigger names or want to add a certain flourishes to their names.

On November 7, Twitter finally rolled out a 280 character limit for all users. The social networking website was both appreciated and mocked for these new updates.

Announcing the change late Thursday, the platform said,

"Starting today, your display name can be up to 50 characters in length! Go ahead, add that middle name or even a few more emojis."

While you are also free to change your username -- the handle beginning with "@" that other people use to mention you -- the limit there remains at 15 characters.

The tweak follows one of the biggest changes in the company's history on Tuesday, which saw the character limit of tweets double from 140 characters to 280.

RomanceRe: Facebook Needs Your Nudes To Fight Against Nudes Virality by techbloga(op): 2:37pm On Nov 10, 2017
Facebook can't be hacked
RomanceFacebook Needs Your Nudes To Fight Against Nudes Virality by techbloga(op): 2:04am On Nov 10, 2017
As funny as this might sound, but yeh it's actually true that Facebook is asking people to share their nude photos. But this isn't what it really sounds like.

An inhuman act of mockery or vengeance causing people to share other people's nudes online will soon be a thing of the past as the social network plan is to make sure people's nude photos aren't used for revenge porn by a disgruntled ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Though Facebook already has a reporting system in place for users when someone's intimate photos are shared without their respective consent, but the idea with this program is to get away with the photos before they go viral in the first place.

The procedure to this is users will share their photos with Facebook via its Messenger app and the company will then "hash" the images, thereby converting the photos to a unique digital code. Once Facebook generates that code, it will block the images from ever being uploaded to its site.

The company is piloting the technology in Australia with a small government agency headed by e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.

Inman Grant told the ABC.

"We see many scenarios where maybe photos or videos were taken consensually at one point, but there was not any sort of consent to send the images or videos more broadly,"

Other big tech companies still exercise this measure of hashing technology in efforts to rid the internet of child pornography. Google, Microsoft and Twitter have used unique digital codes to detect exploitative images, most of which have led to the arrests of people distributing the photographs on the web.

Facebook blog post on Thursday gives more specifics on the pilot project.

"We're constantly working to prevent revenge porn and was looking to try something different. For the program, the social network has partnered with an international working group of survivors, victim advocates and other experts".

"This measure is completely voluntary," by Antigone Davis, Facebook's global head of safety. "It's a protective measure that can help prevent a much worse scenario where an people's explicit image goes viral".

Computers5 Powerful Reasons You Should Learn Tech Skill by techbloga(op): 12:24am On Nov 10, 2017
The world is fast changing and in this period on human history of digital age where traditional industry that the Industrial Revolution brought through industrialization has gone extinct bringing in an economy based on information computerization. technology has come to stay and there's no going back to the old rather newer technologies and advancement are been invented, you've probably heard of motivational speakers or mentors tell you timelessly on the importance for you to learn tech skills but rather, what you may not know are beneficial aspect on indulging into such time taking task.

Tech skill

The great thing about tech skills, though, is that learning begets learning. Once you figure out how one part works, it gets easier and easier to dive into other parts and figure out how things work.

But obviously only a handful of people dives into learning tech skills quite as readily. It’s probably safe to say that a lot of people don’t.

Below are my list of reasons why you should venture into any career in IT today, you'd probably get a rethink after reading this article.
5 Significant Reasons You Must Learn A Tech Skill

1. To future-proof your career

Virtually every career and industry today is becoming more tech-focused and tech-reliant. Industries from agriculture to education are integrating tech into their day-to-day operation, and those who have tech skills and are comfortable working with technology will have a much easier time adapting to changing expectations.

Check out how many teachers who were used to doing all of their grading and record keeping by hand had a very hard transition when everything became digital? How many farmers have seen improvements in their business because they adopted things like soil and crop sensors, bookkeeping software, or GPS and mapping technologies for keeping track of their equipment and operations?

Learning to code isn’t going to make you a master of every career-related technology out there. But what it will do is make you more confident in your tech abilities and make it easier to learn more specific technology you need to do your job.

2. It makes you a good problem solver

Computing and coding basically is all about solving problem. You start with a user problem that needs to be solved and come up with a solution. Then you test that solution to find bugs or possible improvements, and you create a better solution. Every step of the way heads toward solving problems.

Problem-solving skills are universal and can be applied to every part of your life and work, regardless of your lifestyle or industry. From identifying an issue and breaking it down into its parts to creating, testing, and improving solutions, you’ll never regret learning how to efficiently handle problems.

3. It Helps save your money by solving tech problems yourself

When was the last time you had to hire someone to fix your computer? Well atleast i know we're all guilty of this at most point. With tech skills, you can learn to diagnose and fix little and most problems yourself. If you get the basics, and more importantly, if you’re conversant with technology, the solution to a lot of your tech problems is just a Google search away.

4. Technology will become much less frustrating when you understand it

How many times have you been completely frustrated because your smartphone acted up and you had no idea how to fix it? Or when you couldn’t figure out how to make your computer do something when you know it should be so simple?

Technology is way less frustrating if you understand how it works. And while coding skills won’t teach you how to build and program your own smartphone from scratch, understanding some tech basics makes virtually everything in tech make a bit more sense. Once you understand one thing, you can better understand the rest it's as simple as that.

5. It makes you more well-rounded

Having a well-rounded set of skills and knowledge will surely serve well both professionally and personally. Being able to list basic tech skills on your resume will make you professionally more attractive to virtually every employer out there, regardless of industry.

And as more and more people become involved in the tech industry, having at least a passing knowledge of what it’s all about can come in handy when networking personally or professionally.

If you want to build a career around tech skills, you can find out where to start with the Beginner’s Guide to Landing a Junior Developer Job. It’s packed with useful info about what skills you need and what an entry-level job as a web developer actually looks like!

ComputersTizeti & Facebook Partner To Expand Express Wi-fi In Nigeria by techbloga(op): 5:08pm On Nov 09, 2017
Nigeria stands out as one of Africa’s top tech hubs despite weak infrastructure and poor power supply — something that was confirmed last year when Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited the Lagos, Nigerian But to boost innovation even further, the country desperately needs a well-functioning Wi-Fi system Mark said, which is why Tizeti has been trying to provide through its solar-powered towers.

The startup announced its partnership today with Facebook to expand the social network’s Express Wi-Fi in Nigeria, thus providing internet access to people living in remote area across its state in Nigeria.

tizeti-and-express-wifi-by-facebook

Facebook launched Express Wi-Fi to help expand internet connectivity users to underserved locations around the world by working with carriers, internet service providers, and local entrepreneurs. The partnership with Tizeti aims to provide a fast and affordable public Wi-Fi hotspot service in Nigeria in such areas as markets, schools, cafes, and public outdoor spaces.

About 60 solar-powered Wi-Fi towers is owned by Tizeti across Lagos that provide unlimited Wi-Fi access, high speed network to two-thirds of the city, according to Tizeti cofounder and CEO Kendall Ananyi. The Chief Executive and his team found a smart way to cut down on costs: rely on solar energy rather than diesel.

Ananyi said, in an interview.

"Even though Nigeria is one of Africa’s most prominent countries, we still suffer frequent electricity outages, we need to harness the natural resource we have in Nigeria and look at other ways of being able to give millions of people access to reliable, affordable, and socially responsible power — and this is where solar comes into play.”

Ananyi is well-versed in tech and connectivity, having worked at Microsoft. He also worked at ExxonMobil, where he focused on some of the company’s deepwater projects off the Nigerian coast. His cofounder, Ifeanyi Okonkwo, is a former Blackberry employee. The duo founded Tizeti in Lagos in 2012 in and the startup graduated from Y Combinator’s Winter 2017 batch. Tizeti has grown to a team of 80 and recently raised a $2.1 million seed round from investors that include YC, Social Capital, and Zeno Ventures.

While Tizeti’s Wi-Fi offering requires installation paired with a monthly subscription fee that starts at $25, Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi is available to anyone with a Wi-Fi-enabled device and the ability to receive a one-time SMS, according to a statement. Users can connect on most Android and iOS phones, tablets, and laptops without switching SIM cards or having a data plan. Prices range from $0.16 for 100MB to $6.50 for 10GB which is fair for Nigerians.

Facebook and Tizeti plans to launch hundreds of internet hotspots in Nigeria over the next few months. In addition, Tizeti Express Wi-Fi is also live in Kenya, Tanzania, India, and Indonesia.

BusinessWhy Choosing The Right Name Can Either Make Or Break You by techbloga(op): 11:10am On Oct 28, 2017
Considering the surname I grew up with, you'd think I'd know a thing or two about naming stuff.

But it still took an epic mistake on my part before I actually sat down and figured it out.

Here I'll give you a simple formula for naming your products, your domain names, or anything else you like.

And you won't have to make the same mistakes, for you to benefit from the lessons.

A few years ago, I'd built a website that was doing ok (In terms of traffic), it was a 4-letter dot com, - an acronym for a phrase that I'd made up.

And every. single. day. I would get multiple emails asking me what it stood for. Even when I added a page explaining it, the emails still came and only stopped when I incorporated the full name into the logo.

It took a long time, a lot of branding and positioning myself in key places for people in my niche to finally 'get it'.

This was the wrong way to do it.

I had to work harder, for longer.

So much of our communication is already misunderstood, and because we work on the interwebs, we mainly communicate via the written word. There's no body language, tone and other gestures that give us clues.

When we communicate with someone in person, it usually works like this:
(this is important if you wanna be more persuasive)

Body language: 55%
Tone of voice: 38%
Words spoken: 7%

Dr. Albert Mehrabian’s 7-38-55 Rule

Transfer that to the internet, and guess what happens?

You only gotta look at the average comment section of your fave blog to see the amount of confusion, arguments and perceived hostility.

Oh but hey, don't we all use video now, anyway? True, but you still gotta make people click on that link, yo.

So we gotta communicate clearly, if we want our message to be actually understood immediately.

We can't leave any room for misinterpretation.

How do we communicate clearly?

I'll explain how to do each of these...

Avoid homographs and homophones
Use attention-grabbing words
Use meaningful words
Make the right sound

First thing we gotta do is avoid using homographs and homophones.

Homographs

They are two words that are spelt the same way, but have different pronunciations and different meanings. For example; words like 'date,' or 'live'.

Homophones

They are two words that are pronounced the same way, but have different meanings or spellings. For example; words like 'new' and 'knew'.

Avoid using both of these crafty buggers.

Next, we gotta use attention-grabbing words...

In 1963 David Ogilvy published a list of attention-grabbing words.. they are:

Suddenly
Now
Announcing
Introducing
Improvement
Amazing
Sensational
Remarkable
Revolutionary
Startling
Miracle
Magic
Offer
Quick
Easy
Wanted
Challenge
Compare
Bargain
Hurry

It's not ways possible or appropriate to use these in your domain name or the name of your product, but I'm listing them all here because you can still make use of the ones that don't fit.

Use meaningful words

All groups of significant size, or hey, niches *cough*, use their own meaningful words.

It's like a secret language that speaks directly to your target audience.

For example, where else would acronyms like SEO, CTR or EPC have any meaning?

If you can use words that have significant meaning to the people you want to draw in, this is a shortcut to easily making your offer a bit more attractive.

Make the right sound

As a result of an experiment, in 1929 psychologist Wolfgang Köhler discovered that we attribute sounds to shapes.

This is something to think about when it comes to designing your logos, product images and website graphics.

The sounds we use are important. For example, look at Coca Cola.

There's a rhythm to the words, a pattern that we enjoy hearing - our ears responds favourably to loops and patterns.

This is called the phonological loop, and it's closely linked to memory. The ear bounces the sound around a few times, before a decision is made.

If your audience likes what they hear, there's a higher chance they will move closer to your product, or your website.

So when it comes to choosing names, if you have to explain it to someone you're doing it wrong.

This is the process I go through now, before I decide on a name for my products or websites.

And it's helped me to communicate better, grow an audience quicker, and sell more. So maybe it will help you too.

PhonesSkype Hits 1billion Download On Google Playstore by techbloga(op): 1:36am On Oct 28, 2017
Skype has recently joined Google Playstore's exclusive 1 billion download club, becoming one of the massive usage of android's mobile app in the world today.

Following, It’s worth noting here that this figure doesn’t equate to 1 billion active users on Android, that is to say most people can download an app and never use it. Indeed, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed last March that Skype had around 300 million monthly active users (MAUs) across all platforms. And with rival services such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger growing in popularity, it’s unlikely Skype’s MAU number will have risen significantly.

Additionally, the 1 billion hit only specifies on Google's Playstore's downloads as also Skype can be downloaded through other app stores, such as GetJar, and other third party websites so it’s truly difficult to give a clear detail of Skype’s popularity on Android mobile.

Still, very few apps notch up 1 billion downloads at all, let alone on a single platform, so it’s a notable milestone for a service that helped popularize VoIP communications when it launched to the public on desktop computers way back in 2003.

Other conversant Google’s apps, including Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube, have all long passed 1 billion downloads on Google Play, speaking of which, Facebook became the first non-Google service to hit the landmark number when it passed the milestone in 2014. A year later, Facebook’s WhatsApp also notched up a billion Android downloads, followed by Facebook Messenger a few months later.

So Microsoft is effectively now the third company to boast an app with more than 1 billion downloads on Google Play.

ComputersFailing Hard Drives, Amazing Facts You Should Know by techbloga(op): 12:24am On Oct 27, 2017
In today’s digital world, every one of us owns precious files like personal documents, photos, videos, or audio files, which are typically stored on hard drives. Only a handful of people realize that most electronic storage devices, including hard drives, have a rather limited lifetime when compared to the ancient ways of storing information, such as stone, papyrus, paper, or old school records. The average lifetime of a stationary hard drive today is around 4 – 7 years on standard use, though other factors are too considered like the type and its manufacturer, and it rapidly declines if the drive is subject to strong variations in temperature, humidity, and motion as in not being stationary.

A lot of people today own laptops, some external hard drives, which get dragged around quite a bit, a realistic hard drive lifetime is extremely short time to reliably store important data.

On a long run, hard drives naturally gradually fail, during this depreciation whereas giving you the chance to react i.e to backup your data, and replace the storage device before facing a fatal failure. There are a host of signs that hint to a gradual failure of your hard drive.

What Is A Crashed/Failed Hard Drive?

Failed hard drive A lot of times people will ask, “What does it mean when someone tells me that my hard drive crashed, or my hard drive is dead?”– We hear that phrase all the time and, to be honest, I’ve heard it used for a few different scenarios:

Hard drive crash is when your hard drive physically stops working, it can also refer to when it can't be used to perform basic computing operations i.e reading its data, copying from or to the hard drive. If these simple operation can't be performed on the hard drive it is termed ‘crashed hard drive’ or ‘failed hard drive’ If you can imagine a record player spinning, the fastest it can spin would be no more than 78 rotations per minute, whereas a standard rotational drive would be spinning around 5,400 or 7,200 times a minute.

While the discs within the drive move at this very fast rate, the read/write heads of the drive are operating within nanometers of the platters that read or write your data. To put this into perspective, the read/write heads are hovering less than a hair's width away from the data platter. You may wonder when your hard drive will fail, but it’s impossible to tell. We get brand new drives that have failed, and we see 7 year old drives that still run well without any issues.

The hard drive is the weakest but most valuable point in your computer’s system, since this is where it stores all of your data. Unlike other components that operate in the computer, standard disc drives have moving parts which can eventually fail. The motor used to put the hard drive in motion can fail. The read/write heads attached to the head assembly can also fail (this is the part that actually reads and writes the data on the disk). They can become askew which would cause data loss by scraping the platter that stores all the data. The platters or disks themselves can also become warped or not spin correctly resulting in failure and potential data loss.

4 Typical Signs Of Failing Hard Drives

Unfortunately, you’ll never know when a hard drive will go bad. Sometimes it will crash right out of the box. Other times you may be able to use your hard drive for years before it starts to fail. If you have not backed up any data then you will probably need to seek a physical hard drive recovery service to recover the data from the drive.

These are very unspecific signs that can be caused by a million different things on your computer. However, regardless of what the issue behind these symptoms is, it is recommended that you immediately make a backup whenever you notice these signs listed below.

1. Strange Sounds From The Hard Drive

Hard drive sounds This symptom is listed first because it's plain sign of a failing hard drive. When you hear strange noises coming from your hard drive, it may be too late already. A repetitive sound also known as the click of death is caused by the head as it is trying to write data and recovers from errors in doing so. Grinding or screeching noises indicate that parts of the hardware, for example the bearings or spindle motor, are failing.

2. Sluggish Computer/Constant Freezes

Slow computer I know this could be very annoying, but if all of a sudden your computer start to respond sluggishly or constantly freezing up there's a big chance your hard drive is failing and such an instance would be the right time to take action on your hard drive.

3. Corrupting Data

Data corruption If you’re beginning to find files that fail to open and are corrupted even though they saved without errors or if files suddenly disappear, you should get worried. Though, this could be due to a multitude of issues, it is also a typical sign for a gradual hard drive failure.

4. Accumulation Of Bad Sectors

Bad sectors are areas of the hard drive that do not maintain data integrity. They are automatically masked by the operating system and thus hard to identify, especially if large amounts of the disk are currently in use. If you actually run into bad sectors, however, that certainly is a bad sign.

You can run a manual disk check to identify errors that Windows has not spotted, yet. In Windows 7, go to > Start > Computer and right-click on the disk or partition you wish to check. Select > Properties, in the window that opens switch to the > Tools tab and click > Check now… In the Checking Disk window place a checkmark next to > Automatically fix file system errors and > Scan for an attempt recovery of bad sectors.

My Hard Drive Is Failing, What Should I Do?

Confused on hard drive computer Well, believe it or not when when your hard drive starts to fail there's nothing you can do to repair or take it back to it normal state, however, backing up your data would be the best and only escape plan, otherwise it's just a matter of time before it fails totally.

In addition to preventive measures to be taken, modern hard drive come with a built-in feature called S.M.A.R.T (Self Monitoring Analysis & Reporting Technology). This feature helps various tools to predict hard drive failures and report them directly to you. But unfortunately like most other methods listed above, S.M.A.R.T. is notoriously unreliable in predicting hard drive failure and the catastrophe will often happen before the warning of S.M.A.R.T. kicks in.

Conclusion

Do not rely on signs or software to tell you whether you have a failing hard drive. It is more likely than not that it will fail unexpectedly and without any warning signs whatsoever. Rather than trying to forecast something that is even less predictable than the weather, you should rely on backups.

What is your worst computer hardware failure you have experienced?

ComputersTwitter Hit 330 Million Monthly Active Users by techbloga(op): 12:07am On Oct 27, 2017
Twitter who recently tested the 280-character-tweet which is also reputable and widely recognized social media currently has 330 million active users, adding 4 million new monthly users last quarter, up from 326 million last quarter and 317 million this time last year. While this is not a very huge overall improvement compared to Facebook which has about 2billion users, user growth is one of the big things Twitter and its investors have been looking forward to have.

According to reports, daily active users are also up 14 percent year over year, though Twitter didn’t give an exact figure on where those are at overall.

However, Twitter said it had miscounted monthly active users since late 2014, overestimating growth for the prior two quarters by 1 to 2 million. The adjusted figures mean that the company actually lost users during the summer, instead of staying even with its results in the spring.

Twitter reported revenue of $590 million, down from $616 million this time last year, a four percent drop. Still, the company’s losses narrowed, with a net loss of $21 million this quarter, down from $103 million this time last year.

Twitter’s numbers remain surprisingly low compared to other social networks — particular ones owned by Facebook. Instagram has 800 million monthly active users, having added 200 million in little more than the last year. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger have over 1 billion monthly users each, and Facebook itself has over 2 billion. Snapchat, which has itself seen slow growth, only discloses daily active users, but it’s at around half of what Twitter has in a month, with 173 million people using the app each day.

ComputersGoogle Moves To Embed Web Content On Android Apps by techbloga(op): 1:36am On Oct 25, 2017
Google Inc. is an American multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products. These include online advertising technologies, search, cloud computing, software, and hardware.

Google’s Web Activity moves to a new way of integrating it's trusted web content into native mobile applications. By launching this, Android apps will be able to directly include “app-like” content feature served from the app provider’s own site with the benefit of custom tabs but running full-screen, said Dion Almaer, developer relations lead at Google. The capability means up-to-date content, a small on-device footprint, and sharing across websites.

This new Trusted Web Activity support it's preview will be available in Chrome canary and in developer web channels. Support also will soon be available in Android Support Library so that other browsers can provide the capability as well as others

Trusted Web Activity is reportedly similar to Chrome Custom Tabs, which help offer greater control privileges over a web experience and smooth out native-to-web transitions. While the Custom Tabs are intended for generic web content, Trusted Web Activities are meant for content related to a specific app. Thus, there is no need to show the browser toolbar.

ComputersFacebook Tests Splitting News Feed Feature by techbloga(op): 4:26am On Oct 24, 2017
Facebook Inc, on Monday spoke about how it was testing a new initiative of splitting its News Feed into two in order to demarcate a commercial post from personal news in a bid that could lead some businesses to increase advertising.

Facebook News Feed which is also known as the centerpiece of the world’s largest social network service, is a streaming tons and series of posts such as photos from friends, updates from family members, advertisements and material from celebrities or other pages that a user has liked.

The test, which is occurring in six smaller countries, now offers two user feeds, according to a statement from the company: one feed focused on friends and family and a second dedicated to the pages that the customer has liked.

The change could force those who run pages, everyone from news outlets to musicians to sports teams, to pay to run advertisements if they want to be seen in the feed that is for friends and family.

The test is taking place in Bolivia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Serbia, Slovakia and Sri Lanka, and it will likely go on for months, Adam Mosseri, the Facebook executive in charge of the News Feed, said in a blog post.

Mosseri said the company has no plans for a global test of the two separate feeds for its 2 billion users.

Facebook also does not currently plan to force commercial pages “to pay for all their distribution,” he said.

Facebook, based in Menlo Park, California, frequently tests changes big and small as it tries to maximize the time people spend scrolling and browsing the network. Sometimes it makes changes permanent, and other times not.

Depending on how people respond, two news feeds could mean that they see fewer links to news stories. News has proved to be a tricky area for Facebook, as hoaxes and false news stories have sometimes spread easily on the network.

The test has already affected website traffic for smaller media outlets in recent days, Slovakian journalist Filip Struhárik wrote over the weekend in a post on Medium.

Publishers might need to buy more Facebook ads to be seen, he wrote: “If you want your Facebook page posts to be seen in old newsfeed, you have to pay.”

PhonesWhatsapp To Enable Users “unsend” Chat, Fixes Other Bugs by techbloga(op): 4:15am On Oct 24, 2017
For some time now, there has been reportedly been calls and petitions to Whatsapp management pertaining the missed call notification on it's mobile app when the phone did not actually ring and also voice lags or voice break during Whatsapp call which is probably caused by poor internet connectivity. Additional, due to the network connectivity in Nigeria, one can't the internet connection status or stability as it is been recommend that 3G, 4G or Wifi internet connection should be used during especially both voice and video calling.

Though, as at the time of writing this post, Whatsapp hasn't yet imposed these modification, but trust the required test running on these new features, meanwhile let's have a glimpse of Whatsapp latest update pertaining these glitches.

Whatsapp "Live Location" Feature
Few days ago, Whatsapp announced that users will be able to share the location with friends and family in real time. If you’ve used the sharing feature before, you know we could already share locations before, except it was static. With this one though, you’ll be able to share it in real time, almost like a Google Map of chat.

This is how it will work — open a chat with the person or group you want to share with. Go to Location, from the attach button. The attach options will have “Share Live Location”. When you select it, you can even choose for how long you intend to share location with the other person. Then hit send. If more than one person shares their Live Location in the group, all locations will be visible on the same map.

Note that this is an end to those times you lie to your friends that you’re in a particular location when you’re somewhere else. It won’t end well when they request you share your location.

Whatsapp's "Unsend Chat Message" Feature
As already stated, Whatsapp is currently testing an ‘unsend’ feature which will help users to get rid of messages sent either by a mistake or deliberately. With the Delete for Everyone’ feature, those messages you send angrily or when not in good state of mind can be deleted from your Whatsapp Chat Window using ‘unsend’ button.

According to WABetaInfo, experimenting with the new feature on Android and iOS devices. The feature is said to be functioning successful thus far.

‘Recall’ or ‘unsend’ message feature have been in many social apps like WeChat and Viber.

Note: Chats can only be deleted withing 5 minutes after it's sent and if it hasn't been read by the recipient.

Additional tech gossip
In Zimbabwe, it’s now a crime to create a Whatsapp group without registering with the government.

Zimbabwe has now made it illegal to create a Whatsapp group without registration and approval from its ministry of cyber security. The ministry released a statement to that effect with the rules to take effect starting November 1, 2017.

You think this too should be implemented in Nigeria? Air your views!

ComputersBackup Your Computer Effectively With These Simple Steps by techbloga(op): 3:46am On Oct 24, 2017
The other post i made https://www.nairaland.com/4129554/5-reasons-why-must-backup i got hit back asking on how they go about the process of computer backup, well over digging i came up with these simple steps

Prior to the previous article I made where we outlined meaning of computer backup and several key reasons with it’s important to have your computer backup, well if you missed it I highly recommend you go through it to have a tight grip of the meaning and essence of computer backup before proceeding with this post, meanwhile have a glimpse of what we talked about.

In today’s fast-paced world, backing up your files is of the utmost importance. Typically music, movies, films, data files, projects, photos, operating system, programs, and other settings can are all be stored in one place - The computer and can also be backed up. Laptops and desktops have decreased in cost, and the amount of storage inside them has increased greatly over the last few years. Unfortunately having all of your data in only one place is just so dangerous.

Computer loss, theft, natural disaster, and accidental deletion, are just some of the ways that you can lose the data you’ve spent so long creating and accumulating. The only way to prepare for the unexpected is to have a good backup strategy in place. There are many different ways to backup your computers which we are going to be listing here, and using multiple forms of backup will minimize the risk of ever losing your valuable files.

Well, before shading light on how to backup a computer, you should probably know this two forms of computer backup.

Onsite Backup
Onsite Backup literally means backups stored at the same physical location as you. So, if you back up to an external hard drive and store that at home with your home PC, that’s an onsite backup.

Offsite Backup
Offsite backups are stored at a different location. for instance, if you back up to an online server, like that’s an offsite backup.

Types of Computer Backup
External Drive Backup:
computer backupIf you have an external USB hard drive, you can just back up to that drive using your computer’s built-in backup features. External drive backups are mainly intended to provide a backup of your personal files, especially irreplaceable things like pictures. Instead of looking at your entire hard drive, this type of backup only looks at certain folders, such as your home directory. The archive part of this type of backup means that if files are on your primary hard drive are changed (or even deleted) you can go back to undo the changes and even recover those deleted files. If your computer dies you can simply plug the external backup drive into a different computer and immediately have access to all of your files, as well as the history of changes and deleted files.

Cloud Backup
Hcloud computer backupaving a backup (or two) next to your computer is a good start, but it still puts your data at risk for theft, fire, or other disaster. Your best protection against that type of loss is to keep another backup somewhere else. While you could make a clone and bring it to a friend’s house or your office, or even put it into a safe-deposit box, chances are that you would not remember to keep it updated because it would be inconvenient.

In fact, cloud backups are the easiest kind to create and maintain. To get started you simply need to create an account, download software, run it once to enter your account information, and (optionally) set any preferences that you might want. After the initial setup you don’t need to do anything, the software will automatically keep your computer backed up any time it is turned on and connected to the Internet.

Behind the scenes a lot is going on with your cloud backup. First your files are encrypted so no one else can read them. Then they are copied not just to one drive but to lots and lots of drives. One of the main benefits of cloud backup is that the "cloud" is made up of many distributed and redundant computers and drives, so the loss of any one will not cause you to lose any files. Once they are uploaded, you never have to worry about uploading them again unless they are changed. Even then, changes can be sent much faster because the software is smart enough to know what is different and only send the changed data.

The main downside people have with setting up an offsite backup is the initial upload, which can take a few weeks or even a month. This depends on how much data you are trying to upload and the speed of your connection. Most ISPs are more focused on download speeds than upload speeds. If your current plan has slow uploads, you might be able to call them and temporarily upgrade to a plan with more "upload bandwidth" during your initial backup. Another potential negative is if you lose your entire drive and need to get all of your files back. In that case you would be limited by the speed at which you can download from your cloud backup provider.

Bootable Backup or “Clone”
two hard drivesA "bootable backup" (sometimes called a "clone"wink is like a spare tire for your car. If you get a flat tire, a spare will let you finish your trip or at least get you to the point where you can get more help. A clone is a complete copy of your computer’s primary hard drive (sometimes called a "boot drive"wink. If your computer’s primary drive died tomorrow you could hook up the clone, reboot your computer from it, and have immediate access to not only all of your files but also all of the software you use, including all of the settings and configuration changes that you have made. If you are in the middle of an important project or just don’t have time to replace the boot drive immediately, a clone can really save the day. A clone also has a copy of all your files as they were when the clone was last updated, which means that if you accidentally deleted a file, you can copy it back from the clone to your boot drive.

A spare tire isn’t meant to be used for very long, and it usually isn’t as good as the original. The same is true of a clone backup drive. With a car there are lots of other things that can go wrong besides the tire failing. With a computer there are lots of other things that can go wrong besides the hard drive failing. Your computer will run slower when booted from an external drive, and there may be some other shortfalls.

Still you’d definitely like to have a clone when your primary hard drive fails. Of course your clone will only be useful if it has been updated recently, because otherwise it will be missing files. However, because it has to examine every file on your computer, it can take awhile to create, and it is best not to use your computer while the clone is updating. Due to all of those factors, a clone is usually updated once a day at most and more often only once a week.

How To Backup Computer Using External Hard Drive
Get a backup drive. This can be just about any USB external hard drive, and you can get them at most electronics stores. Try to get one that has twice as much space as your computer, so you have room for multiple backups and so you have room for all the data you might get in the future.
When you first plug it in, Windows will actually ask you if you want to use it as a backup. Tell it that you do. If you don't get this prompt, you can just go to the Start Menu, type "backup" in the search box, and hit Backup and Restore.
From there, click the "Set Up Backup" button. Pick the external drive you plugged in and hit Next. Windows' default settings are probably fine, so you can just hit Next and the next screen too.
On the last screen, hit "Save Settings and Run Backup". Windows will make its first backup of your drive, during which you don't want to turn off your computer. After that, it'll make regular backups in the background as you work—you don't need to deal with it again.
If you ever need to restore a file you lost, you can just go to the Start Menu, type in "backup", and go back to "Backup and Restore". You can hit the "Restore My Files" or "Restore Users Files" buttons to get those files back.

Alternatively,

You can select the Start button, then select Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.
Do one of the following:
If you've never used Windows Backup before, or recently upgraded your version of Windows, select Set up backup, and then follow the steps in the wizard.
If you've created a backup before, you can wait for your regularly scheduled backup to occur, or you can manually create a new backup by selecting Back up now.
If you’ve created a backup before, but want to make a new, full backup rather than updating the old one, select Create new, full backup, and then follow the steps in the wizard.
Note: Do not back up files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on. For example, do not back up files to a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a secure place to prevent unauthorized people from having access to your files; a fireproof location separate from your computer is recommended. You might also consider encrypting the data on your backup.

To Restore,

Right-click the Start button, then select Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.
Do one of the following:
To restore your files, choose Restore my files.
To restore the files of all users, choose Restore all users' files.
Do one of the following:
To look through the contents of the backup, select Browse for files or Browse for folders. When you're browsing for folders, you won't be able to see the individual files in a folder. To view individual files, use the Browse for files
To search the contents of the backup, select Search, type all or part of a file name, and then select Search.
Tips: If you're searching for files or folders associated with a specific user account, you can improve search results by typing the location of the file or folder in the Search for box. For example, to search for all JPG files that were backed up, type JPG in the Search for box. To only search for JPG files associated with the user Bill, type C:\Users\Bill\JPG in the Search for box.

You can use wildcard characters such as *.jpg to search for all JPG files that were backed up.

To Make a System Image
System images contain all of the info on your PC at a particular state

Right-click the Start button, then select Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.
In the left panel, choose Create a system image, and then follow the steps in the wizard.
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Note: To create a system image of a drive, it must be formatted to use the NTFS file system. If you save the system image on a hard drive or USB flash drive, it must be formatted to use the NTFS file system.

Computer Backup For Mac Users
Get a backup drive. This can be just about any USB external hard drive, and you can get them at most electronics stores. Try to get one that has twice as much space as your computer, so you have room for multiple backups and so you have room for all the data you might get in the future.
When you plug in your drive, your Mac will ask you if you want to use that drive as a backup disk. Hit "Use as Backup Disk". If you don't get this prompt, you can always go to System Preferences > Time Machine to set it as a backup disk, too.
From Time Machine's preferences, hit "Select Backup Disk" and choose your external drive.
That's it! OS X will perform its first backup (during which you'll want to keep your computer on), and from then on it'll back up in the background with no work required on your part.
If you ever need to restore a file, just click on the Time Machine icon in your menu bar and hit "Enter Time Machine". From there, you can search through your old backups for the files you lost and restore them to your hard drive.

How To Backup Your Computer To Cloud

Backblaze (currently $50 annually per computer) is reportedly the best online backup service for most people, as if offers a great combination of useful features unlimited storage, and excellent performance at an attractive price - the proverbial cost of a latte per month. backblaze offers fast, reliable backups, as well as the simplest setup process I've seen and a number of nice touches.

IDrive though is more expensive than Backblaze and offers only 2 TB of storage, but it lets you back up from or to network volumes, offers indefinite retention of deleted files and old versions of files, lets you seed an initial backup at no charge, and provides the fastest throughput of any service in our test group. If Backblaze isn't suitable for your needs and you're willing to spend a bit more, IDrive may be an excellent choice.

Alternative cloud backup platform you might want to consider

Computers5 Reasons Why You Must Backup Your Computer by techbloga(op): 2:25am On Oct 21, 2017
What Is Computer Backup

In Information Technology, a backup, or the process of backing up, refers to the copying and archiving of computer data so it may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form is to back up in two words, whereas the noun is backup.

Creating a computer backup of original content means having that data saved in two places, but it’s also important to make sure that those two places aren’t on the same device. For example, if you have 3 copies of a working document on your computer, if your computer hard drive crashes, you will still lose all three. This makes the backup method and medium, an important thing to consider for your backup strategy!
Reasons Why You Must Have A Computer Backup

It’s not a question to ask “IF your computer hard drive will fail, but WHEN”. While there is a certain amount of humor in this statement, the unfortunate reality is that Hard drive failure and other similar problems are inevitable and more common than many people realize.

Computer Backup have two distinct purposes. The primary purpose is to recover data after its loss, be it by data deletion or data corruption. Data loss can be a common experience of computer users; a 2008 survey found that 66% of respondents had lost files on their home PC.

The secondary purpose of computer backup is to recover data from an earlier time, according to a user-defined data retention policy, typically configured within a backup application for how long copies of data are required. Though backups represent a simple form of disaster recovery, and should be part of any disaster recovery plan, backups by themselves should not be considered a complete disaster recovery plan. One reason for this is that not all backup systems are able to reconstitute a computer system or other complex configuration such as a computer cluster, active directory server, or database server by simply restoring data from a backup.
Other Common Important Reasons For A Computer Backup
1. Destroyed Files Aren’t Always Recoverable:

Destroyed computer hard driveWhile a skilled computer repair specialist can recover the majority of lost files, there are times when destroyed files or deleted files simply cannot be recovered. When you take the time to periodically backup data, you can easily bring back the files that have been lost.
2. Hard drive failure:

Hard drive failureHard drives have a finite lifetime and can fail suddenly and without warning. The sudden death of a hard drive can cause the painful loss of months or years of irreplaceable files and the timing can be catastrophic – if this happens close to a work or college deadline it could be a nightmare scenario.
3. Virus Attack:

Virus attackAggressive malicious viruses can corrupt files and disable computers.
4. Theft:

Computer theft

Computers are sought after by thieves and cannot always be kept secure whilst travelling.

The bottom line is that if you value what’s kept on your computer, it’s wise to take steps to protect your information from sudden loss. Work can be redone, but the loss of cherished files like family and travel photos is permanent.

Many users regularly backup their files to their computer hard drive, but in the event of a total computer breakdown this will not protect the information. Saving data to a separate location makes far more sense, and can be easily done if you have an external hard drive, or a large-capacity pen drive to back up onto.

However this method is only as secure as the device you’re backing up to. When saving your files on physical devices, your backup device needs to be kept in a different location than your computer, and can in turn fall victim to damage or loss. In addition, despite your best intentions, you may forget to copy your files as often as you should, leaving a large amount of recent work unprotected.

A safer and more effective method of securing files is online backup. Files stored online are safe from damage your computer, and if something goes wrong with your machine you will still have remote access to your information from any computer with internet access. This means files can be quickly and easily restored to your computer from a secure online server.
5. Humans are Known to Make Mistakes

Human error on computer Whether you accidentally spilled coffee on your laptop’s keyboard, you failed to update your virus protection or you simply pressed the “delete” key at the wrong time, you are human and you will make mistakes on occasion. While a computer repair specialist might be able to undelete files and recover destroyed files, you will rest a whole lot easier if you backup data before these problems ever occur. This way, you will save yourself money and heartache when all of your files are right where you left them on your backup device or server.

ComputersGoogle Introduces Weblite Nigeria by techbloga(op): 2:14am On Oct 20, 2017
Tech giant Google has rolled WebLite in Nigeria claiming it enables faster and more affordable access to the web across Africa.

In a statement gotten, Google stated that when it comes to searching, faster is always better.

“Whether you’re commuting to work, searching for the latest sports news, or for the phone number of a nearby restaurant, quick access to information from the web is crucial. In Africa, we see that nearly 40% of people with Android devices may be experiencing a slow or delayed connection while they’re on the web due to usage of low RAM devices,” Google stated.

The company said it is now introducing a feature that will help users to get the information they’re looking for quicker, easier and more affordably.

“Now for most of Africa, when you search on Google with a low RAM device via the Google App, Chrome or Android browser, web pages that you access from Google’s search results page will be optimized to load faster and use less data,” Google stated.

PhonesWhatsapp’s Live Location Feature Lets Friends Track Each Other In Real Time by techbloga(op): 11:18am On Oct 19, 2017
WhatsApp has announced a notable new feature today, one that may prove popular with millions of security-conscious, nosy, and impatient people globally.

Landing on both Android and iOS “in the coming weeks,” the new Live Location feature allows WhatsApp users to share their real-time location with friends and family. It’s worth noting here that WhatsApp already allows you to share your current location, however that feature is static — if you’re moving around, friends are not able to see where you’re going.

The new Live Location feature, on the other hand, lets people track where you are for a period of time stipulated by you.

How it works

To initiate Live Location, go to the conversation — individual or group — that you want to share your location with. Then hit the little “attach” (paper clip) button that exists in the message field and go to “Location.” Now, in addition to the existing static location-sharing feature, you’ll see “Share Live Location,” as well.

You can stipulate how long you wish to share your location for, be it 15 minutes, one hour, or eight hours, although there doesn’t appear to be a customizable timer that lets you share your location for “18 minutes,” for example.

Above: Set time

But you can cease sharing your location at any time by hitting the “stop sharing” button.

Above: Stop sharing?

And, interestingly, multiple people from the same group can all share their location on the same map.

Above: Group locations

This kind of location-sharing functionality is nothing new, of course. Glympse has offered something similar for years, while France’s Zenly has been gaining traction for its location-sharing app. Google, too, had embraced real-time location sharing with Latitude, a service it killed off back in 2013. However, last year Google launched its new standalone Trusted Contacts app, which offers near-identical functionality, before bringing another similar feature directly into Google Maps back in March.

But with more than one billion active daily users, WhatsApp has emerged as the social glue for countless social interactions — covering friends, families, neighbors, work colleagues, and everyone in between.

There are many use-cases for this feature — if you’re the sort of person who hates hanging around waiting for someone to arrive at a designated meeting spot, you can see (if the other person allows) exactly how long you’ll have to wait. But perhaps the most common use-case will be worried parents or partners wanting to know where their loved ones are late at night.

For the privacy-concerned, WhatsApp is quick to remind users that — like messages and calls — Live Location is “end-to-end encrypted.”

PhonesHuawei’s Mate 10 Smart Phone Floats In Mobile Market by techbloga(op): 7:56pm On Oct 17, 2017
China’s Huawei has recently unveiled a new smartphone that’s that matches or maybe more improved on key features which was offered by Samsung or Apple while undercutting their rivals on its price.

Huawei aims to distinguish itself through technological advances that will put it on a level playing field with the most coveted premium-priced devices, helping to boost profitability that has been undermined by heavy discounting in the chase for market share.

Monday’s product launch in Munich introduced Huawei’s new Mate 10 series, touting high-end cameras, screens and batteries but at prices 15-30 percent below more or less comparable Apple and Samsung smartphones.

Huawei was the world’s No. 3 smartphone maker by shipments last year, temporarily overtaking Apple as No. 2 in June as consumers awaited the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X line-up, data from Counterpoint Research shows.

With Apple’s latest models now on the market, Huawei has weighed in with the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, featuring, respectively, 5.9-inch and 6-inch edge-to-edge displays, as well as fast-charging batteries that sustain two days of heavy use.

“The Mate 10 line ticks all the boxes in terms of screen size, high-quality camera, powerful processor and slick design — competing with rival products from Samsung and to some extent, Apple,” said CCS Insight mobile analyst Ben Wood.

Perhaps the most distinctive features of the Mate 10 series is its image recognition capability — an artificial intelligence feature that can tell the difference between people, flowers or other objects in different light or weather conditions. The Mate 10 also boasts cameras with high-grade Leica f1.6 aperture lenses.

“We have the ability to start helping the novice become a professional-grade photographer,” Peter Gauden, a senior Huawei product marketing manager, said at an advance product briefing. “(It) is not only a smartphone, it is an intelligent machine.”
Pricing and profitability of the Huawei’s Mate 10 smartphone

In March Huawei vowed to focus on profit margins and reduce spending this year after posting its slowest profit growth in 5 years in 2016.

Though it has become more focused on mid-tier and premium phones and reduced its appetite for market share at any cost, it still has a long way to go.

Apple captures nearly two thirds of the smartphone industry’s profits and Samsung accounts for almost a quarter while Huawei and Chinese rivals operate on meager margins of about 4 percent, Counterpoint Research estimates.

Those modest margins put a cap on how far Huawei can go with further discounting.

China’s largest smartphone maker is looking to sustain its momentum in international markets such as Europe while also differentiating itself from fast-growing domestic rivals through technical advances.

“Today our product is getting better and better, but the challenge for us is our branding,” Huawei Consumer Business Group chief Richard Yu told Reuters last month. “Our brand, many people don’t know that, they don’t know Huawei.”

Huawei’s European growth exceeded 50 percent in the first half of 2017, outpacing other regions, Yu said, adding that European sales had helped to compensate for sluggish growth in emerging markets.

The Mate 10, priced at 699 euros ($825), will go on sale in 15 countries this month, ranging from Spain to the Gulf states, Australia and southeast Asia, Huawei said.

The slightly more feature-rich Mate 10 Pro will be priced at 799 euros and start to ship in mid-November to 20-plus countries, including Germany, France, Italy, as well as Asian and Middle East nations. The company also said it will offer a luxury Porsche Design edition at 1,395 euros. Samsung’s comparable top-of-the-line phone, the Galaxy Note 8, is priced at 999 euros in Germany. Apple’s smaller-screened iPhone 8 starts at 799 euros while the iPhone 8 Plus is 909 euros and the iPhone X starts at 1,149 euros on the company’s German website.

($1 = 0.8472 euros)
