According to the report, Police in China's Zhejiang province have arrested 22 (apparently third-party) Apple distributors for allegedly selling iPhone user data. Officials say the workers searched an internal Apple database for sensitive info, such as Apple IDs and phone numbers, and peddled it on the black market for between 10 to 180 yuan with each sale ($1.50 to $26). All told, the distributors reportedly raked in more than 50 million yuan, about $7.36 million, before authorities stepped in.

Having said that, in term of security, We all know that Apple products are known to have top-notch security built-in, but this bust is bound to raise concerns about distributors' access to data. Though its not clear how many people are affected by this data sales or whether many of the victims live outside of China.

That been said, MP3 the popular music file format is approaching its inevitable death. Well, the file format had helped Apple and Spotify become music monsters. Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits which owns the patent for MP3 audio format and licenses it, has just announced that it will be no longer support the format. Well, if you are wondering the reason behind it, let me put you in the known. The creator said the reason behind it is that there are better ways to store music files nowadays. So the termination of MP3 will only but help those other formats. Below is Fraunhofer Institute’s official statement:

"Technicolor’s mp3 licensing program for certain mp3 related patents and software of Technicolor and Fraunhofer IIS has been terminated.”

The institute also said that well-known streaming, TV, radio service providers are now using ISO-MPEG codecs like AAC family or MPEG-H. Is this the end of the road for MP3? well, people can still use the MP3 because they don't need a licence for it.

NAIROBI 30th January 2017: Airtel Africa, a leading telecommunications company with operations in 15 countries across Africa, has refuted speculative media reports erroneously stating its possible exit from Africa. The organization has reaffirmed that it remains committed to Africa and will continue to invest in its operations to grow sustainably in Africa.

Airtel Africa’s recent 3rd quarter results were strong. The underlying Africa revenues for the quarter accelerated by 6.0 per cent Y-o-Y, the highest over the last 9 quarters. The organization’s efforts to improve the quality of customer acquisitions have resulted in a reduction in customer churn to 4.9 per cent from 6.0 per cent. Data consumption and revenues have grown by 91.0 percent & 24.0 per cent Y-o-Y respectively, led by stronger data networks. The strong focus on cost management has led to a significant underlying EBITDA margin expansion of 4.5 per cent Y-o-Y, which now stands at 24.5 percent. Africa is now generating positive free cash and is PBT positive in constant currency.

A week ago, Google noticed a huge search term coming from several people from Nigeria searching for the phrase "is Buhari dead" which hit about 100,000+ on google. And there was a rumor that the presidency denied it.

Few weeks ago, a report hit the internet on how millions of budget Chinese smartphones secretly send users data; call logs, locations history, messages straight to China. And a BLU phone was mentioned in the smartphone backdoor scandal. But this time, another smartphone backdoor has been spotted with over three millions smartphones that are produced in china, A backdoor that leaves users at risk.

The smartphone backdoor was discovered by Anubis networks - Some group of researchers, shows that the problem is caused by unsecured OTA update carried out by Ragentek Group, a Chinese software company that provides Over-The-Air update for different OEMs.

Two unregistered domains are coded into these devices, in which they are contacted during OTA update and anybody could have taken advantage of this, register the domains, and initiate a widespread attack over millions of smartphones. Using un-encrypted channel for OTA update not only leaves the device vulnerable to attacks but a specific user information can also be hijacked during transport. According to the report

This analysis revealed two critical discoveries: Firstly, the vulnerability described above allows for users to be subjected to significant attacks in positions where an adversary can perform a Man-in-the-Middle attack. Secondly, this OTA binary was distributed with a set of domains preconfigured in the software. Only one of these domains was registered at the time of the discovery of this issue. If an adversary had noticed this, and registered these two domains, they would’ve instantly had access to perform arbitrary attacks on almost 3,000,000 devices without the need to perform a Man-in-the-Middle attack. AnubisNetworks now controls these two extraneous domains to prevent such an attack from occurring in the future for this particular case.

Having said that, OEMs affected includes Infinix, BLU, Doogee, XOLO, Leagoo, and some Unnamed "Others"

The DNA Electronics and researchers with imperial college has created a new USB stick that can detect HIV in blood. Just the way you detect sugar level, the new HIV USB stick involves placing a drop of blood on a sensor. The USB stick is then connected to a computing devices e.g laptop, desktop where results will be determined and presented.

The USB stick is made using a ‘phone chip', which experiences an electrical signal caused by a change in acidity, which is itself caused by the HIV virus.

Gone are the days, when traditional technology in monitoring the viral level in a patient takes about three days or more and somewhat stressful. In Remote location for example, where the blood sample must be sent to a laboratory which may be far away.

"However, monitoring viral load is crucial to the success of HIV treatment. At the moment, testing often requires costly and complex equipment that can take a couple of days to produce a result. We have taken the job done by this equipment, which is the size of a large photocopier, and shrunk it down to a USB chip."

These newly developed HIV USB stick test, will take away all these problems, you don't need to depend on a laboratory middle-man and you don't need to wait for long time before you can see your result. With the new USB stick, results are presented in less than 30 minutes, with 95 per cent accuracy.

The new HIV USB stick holds a great promise for some region in Africa where instances of HIV are high. Who knows, the USB stick may be able to detect other virus as well in the future.

As rumored, YouTube has just launched their social network which will allow users to post text, GIFs live video and more. Last week it was rumored that YouTube was working on its own social network called "YouTube backstage", now instead of the name, they decide to use the name "YouTube community".

According to Youtube, The new YouTube community beta will allow users to see content in their subscriptions feeds and can also get push notifications when there is fresh content. YouTube in a critical move to fight off Facebook rival who has grown video exponentially over the last few year, wants to have more social features.

"YouTube has been testing the new service over the past several months with a handful of creators in order to gain feedback. It's launching the service into public beta with this group of early testers, and will make it available to a wider group of creators in the "month's ahead," it says. Access to this expanded feature set is made available to the creators and their viewers by way of a new "Community" tab on their channels. From here, creators can share things like text posts, images, GIFs and other content, which the audience can thumbs up and down, like the videos themselves, as well as comment on. Viewers will see these posts in their "Subscriptions" feed in the YouTube mobile application, and can also choose to receive push notifications on these posts from their favorite creators, YouTube says.

Yes we now have more information on Mark zuckerberg visit to Nigeria. According to APO, Mark is not here just to make press conference but he is here to also learn, listen and get ideas home on how Facebook can better support tech development and entrepreneurship across Africa.

Mark will be using his time to meet with developers and partners, explore Nollywood and to also visit Yaba technology hub in Lagos. One of his first stop was the visit to ‘Summer of Code Camp’ at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) in Yaba, known as the Silicon Valley of Nigeria. After the visit Mark zuckerberg, CEO of facebook has this to say:

“This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I’ll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I’m excited to learn as much as I can.

“The first place I got to visit was the Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB) in Yaba. I got to talk to kids at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who come to CcHub to build and launch their apps. I’m looking forward to meeting more people in Nigeria.”

He also visit Andela -- an engineering organization that is building the next generation of technical leaders in Africa. Andela is the brain behind turning a group of talented technologists in Africa and refine them into a world class developers via a four year program. This got Mark zuckerberg attention and prompt the facebook CEO to invest in Andela's innovative model of learning. Andela director, Seni Sulyman has this to say:
