A lot of phone buyers depend on what the sales representative at the phone shop tells them in order to make a decision as regards which phone to buy. This is sadly not the best way to go about it. A sales representative wants to sell desperately, so there is a good chance she will sugar-coat certain phone info so you can make a purchase. Always do a comprehensive research on the phone you intend to buy before stepping into the phone shop. Below are crucial steps you must take before going to the phone shop. 1. Once you come across a phone you will like to buy, the first thing to do is to check the phone's specification online. Of course Gsmarena.com is the best place to do this for international phones but for phones unique to the Nigerian market, "Techthins Compare" is the best! www.techthins.com/compare/devices. Afterwards, proceed by comparing the phone with others in its range. "Techthins Compare" also lets you do this with ease. 2. Read written reviews about the phone online. The best way to do this is via Google. Just search for the name of the phone on Google and pick from the list of suggested sites. 3. Watch YouTube videos of the phones. And learn people's opinion of the phone online. 4. Lookout for people who use the phone in real life. Ask them questions about battery life, price, where they bought thiers etc. With these steps taken properly, you will be able to sieve out the facts from the exaggerations of a sales representative. |

Considering the improvements the new Tecno Phantom 5 has over the popular Tecno Phantom Z which costs about #55K, I think #70K is modest for Phantom 5. Compare phone specs and prices at http://techthins.com/compare/devices/

Nice post! To add to the first point "Screen resolution" I think there is a little more to a phone's display than the pixels dimension, the type of display panel also matters. For example, the HTC One M8 has a LCD panel with a 1080 x 1920 resolution while the Nexus 6 has an AMOLED panel with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. On paper, one is inclined to say the Nexus 6 has a better display, but its the other way round in real life! The M8's display is clearer and more natural to the eyes despite the fact that it has lesser pixels in it. This is possible because LCD panels produce more natural colours than AMOLED display panels. So Its important to also look out for the display panel of a phone when phone hunting! Start your phone hunting here:http://techthins.com/compare/devices/

WALKCAR, A PORTABLE CAR THAT’S SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT INTO YOUR BAG. It was designed by Tokyo-based engineering team, Cocoa Motors, the WalkCar looks at first glance like an upturned iPad with wheels. It is, as the name indicates, a portable transporter, ideal for strolling around town with very little effort. It’s quite light, about 6.6 pounds, made from aluminium, and powered by a Lithium-ion battery. After a three-hour charge, it can reach speeds of up to 6.2mph (10km/h). WalkCar is just so easy to use. Stand on it to go, get off to stop. To steer it, simply shift your weight around like you would on a skateboard. Cocoa Motors team member, Kuniako Saito says WalkCar creation is an improvement on alternatives like the Segway and Toyota’s Winglet because it’s small enough to prop into a bag when your journey is done. So, WalkCar could be an ideal way of covering those short distances at speed if your legs aren’t up to the job. The company has promised to make WalkCar available for purchase worldwide later this year. And it’s going to cost around $800.

Is your alarm clock not loud enough to get you out of bed? Not to worry, the High Voltage Ejector Bed would do the job for you. Just set the alarm for the usual time, once the alarm sounds, it will shoot upwards, throwing you out of it. Now, if this doesn't wake you, I'm sorry, nothing else can.

One Dr. Kenneth, a spinal cord expert, has discovered something quite disturbing while treating several patients, and he has proven its existence in a study. According to him, adults spend about four hours a day bent over their laptops and Smartphones. But, with teenagers, the number of hours spent texting and surfing the Internet can run as high as 5,000 hours a year. He further said, the constant humpbacked posture and staring, bent over at a screen has led to an unexpected health problem: “texting-neck” – a condition leading to a severe and incessant pain in the neck region. A young patient examined by Dr. Kenneth first exhibited the shocking malformation, through constant bending of her heavy head, her spine had begun to bend in the other direction. Though it takes years for such deformity to develop and it occurs mostly among older people. But through extreme smartphone addiction, children and teens are more vulnerable as their bones are easier to warp. In addition to heavy neck and back pains, “texting-neck” can also cause excruciating migraines, shortness of breath, and numbness in the arms. To avoid this situation, there is one thing you can do: take precautions. More movement is naturally the most essential thing of all. So, always hold your phone in front of your face while keeping your back straight. And, watch your neck! Source: www.techthins.com

Searching for the best Android apps is a daunting task. Below you will find a list of Apps I think are the best in their respective categories 1. Best App for downloading FREE music on Android is the Google Play Music! Spotify has an excellent paid subscription service, and Sound Cloud has a multitude of tracks for online streaming, but Google Play Music actually surpasses them because it comes out of the box with an Android phone, it is very easy to use and it is absolutely free to download songs on your devices. 2. Best Android-exclusive Launcher is the Nova Launcher. I say its the best because this Launcher mimics exactly the real Android operating system’s user interface. It’s compatibility starts with Android 4.1 and It lets you customize the entire look and feel of your Operating System. 3. Best Android App for Kids. Once you’ve installed the necessary apps for your kids on your device, then, go ahead and download ‘KIDS PLACE‘. Best App for musicians on Android is ‘ CAUSTIC 3‘. With this tool, you have the freedom to use 14 different synthesizers, vocoders and drum machines to create that perfect sound, even while on the move. With this app, you can download YouTube videos to your device in various formats and resolutions. Anything you download will automatically be saved to the video section of your Gallery and be ready to watch or stream to Chromecast. 6. Best Unknown Android App is: ‘Ask Me Anything‘, created by Reddit AMA. It’s a unique and low-key app which lets you read the latest Celebrity AMA interviews, and also send over questions that you’d like to ask those celebrities. 7. Best Cloud Storage App for Android is the Google Drive because, it’s baked into most Android devices. And Google is always giving away extra GBs of storage space for FREE, and it’s synced up with the handy Google Docs Office suite. It’s the undisputed Champ! 8. Best Messaging App goes to ‘DRUPE‘. Why?! Drupe displays your whole contacts list, then lets you contact people using any of the most popular messaging services such as – WhatsApp, SMS, Skype, you name it. A very good app. 9. Best dating App for Android. Look no further for POF (Plenty Of Fish) is already there for you. Sign-up is absolutely FREE! It lets you do so much without even unlocking your screen from checking notifications, calendar reminders, music controls, missed calls, quick settings and more. 12. Best Alternative to the Google Play Store is ‘SlideMe‘. According to the President of the Irish College of Ophthalmologists. William Power, the results of a ‘bionic eye’ trial offer hope to patients with a rare eye disease. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis system consists of a small electronic device implanted in and around the eye, plus a tiny video camera attached to a pair of glasses, and a video processing unit that is worn or carried by the patient who suffers from this rare eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa. An incurable eye disease that causes slow vision loss which eventually leads to blindness. It leads to a breakdown of cells in the retina, the light sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. For the study, a clinical trial of 30 people, aged 28 to 77, was conducted in the United States and Europe. The visual function results showed that up to 89% of the patients on which the device was tested performed significantly well. Thanks, once again to Science. www.techthins.com

1. Swipe Up to Wake/Unlock/Advanced Interactions: Though, we can get ‘swipe to wake’ on Android (or double tap to wake) but it isn’t available on all Android devices. 2. Multitasking: On Blackberry 10, any app can be instantly minimized with the swipe up gesture and is then accessible as a small file on a separate screen. 3. BlackBerry Hub: This unites all your text messages, IMs, emails, social network feeds, call records, etc., in one centralized place, thereby making it easy to get all your notifications in order, read, and respond how you want. 4. Search: In BB OS 10, you don’t have to open up a dedicated search apps, just start typing your desired term from the home screen and the search window opens up automatically. 5. Notifications: On BB OS 10, all new incoming messages and notifications are shown momentarily. This works with all apps including games. Android provides the same functionality, but they don’t work well with all apps. 6. Security: With Android phones, if you forgot your password all you need do is to get the phone flashed to bypass the security lockscreen. The same can’t be done on BB OS 10. If you know other things BB OS 10 does better than Android, please let us know in the comment section below. www.techthins.com

Facebook can recognize your face. Google can recognize the words you bark into an Android phone and Microsoft can translate your speech into another language. Now, Artificial Intelligence is progressing towards teaching ‘online services’ to understand natural language, to grasp not just the meaning of words, but the entire sentences and even paragraphs. At Facebook, AI researchers recently demonstrated a system that can read a summary of ‘The Lord of The Rings’, then answer questions about the books. Using neural networking algorithm called – Word2Vec, Google is teaching its machines to better understand the relationship between words posted across the Internet! AI is fast taking over our computer based and engineering systems. It’s only a matter of time before our electronics and gadgets develop minds of their own, which would allow them do things on our behalf without waiting for ‘orders’ from us. On this note, I welcome you all into the future. www.techthins.com

Fake mobile phone manufacturers copy all aspects of an original branded phone’s look to make their products appear genuine. The phone’s build quality and screen, the logos and branding, the packaging and the included accessories can all be cloned, making it very difficult to identify whether a phone is fake or genuine. When possible it is always advisable to buy a phone through a registered reseller who can vouch for a phone’s authenticity. However, with the dominance of internet shopping and auction websites this may not be possible. Here are a few simple tips to help you identify whether a phone is genuine or fake: RESEARCH BEFORE PURCHASE Before purchasing you should know the phone’s specific model number, available colours, features, what software and hardware comes included and what warranty is offered with the product. Information about a specific model of phone can be found on the manufacturer’s website or through a registered retailer. Once you have this information it will make the job of identifying a fake much easier. LOOK, LOOK AND LOOK On first glance, a cloned phone may look identical to a genuine model but on closer comparison you may be able to identify some obvious differences between a genuine and a fake such as: the colour, location of buttons, size or spelling of the brand name. Some fakes are less obvious. Fake phone manufacturers are able to mimic design details down to the very least details making it very difficult for a prospective buyer to tell if a phone is genuine. If you are able to view the product in person you may be able to notice a difference in weight, screen size, location of buttons and battery, quality of printing and paint finish, added or missing functions, quality control stickers and holograms and an overall lack of quality. FEATURES Fake phones can have differing features to genuine models, such as dual SIM cards, analogue TV etc. Confirm the model number and technical specifications of the genuine phone you wish to buy and ensure they match what is being offered. Counterfeit phones also often appear to offer features that are either just not there or that are not as they are said to be. For example, built-in cameras might be said to be 8 megapixel when they are not – or offer GPS when they don’t. Counterfeit phones may also differ from a genuine in colour availability, memory capacity, camera megapixels, screen quality and operating system. It is important to compare technical features to ensure the phone is genuine. PRICE Fake phones are usually cheaper than the genuine ones. To be sure of the retail price of a genuine phone, check the manufacturer’s website. These fake phones, most times come at half the price of the genuine ones. So next time you see a brand new iPhone 6 going for sixty thousand Naira, beware! FUNCTIONALITY Black market phones are made from sub-standard and cheap components and often run on 2nd rate or pirated operating systems. Counterfeiters use cheap older generation chipsets, which may offer the same functionality as a genuine model but at far slower processing speeds. If you have unknowingly purchased a fake phone you will realise very quickly once you turn it on. Processing speeds are often much slower, operating systems have missing features and the phone may not be compatible with affiliated software and applications. AVAILABILITY Counterfeit mobile phones tend to pour on to the market when a genuine model is out of stock or unavailable. Often if manufacturers and registered sellers say a model is out of stock or unavailable, counterfeits begin to appear on auction websites and through unregistered sellers. This is also common when a phone is not available in certain colours. Beware, counterfeiters take this opportunity to deceive consumers when the genuine product is most in demand. IMEI NUMBER Every genuine mobile phone has a serial number to register it to a carrier network. This number is called the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. The IMEI number can be used to verify the legitimacy of a phone. Often counterfeit models won’t have an IMEI number or use a fake one. If you are viewing the phone in person then you can find the IMEI number on the product packaging and under the phone’s battery If you are not viewing the phone in person then you should ask the retailer for the phone’s IMEI number. To check the legitimacy of a phone’s IMEI number and any information regarding country of production, manufacturer and model type, you can use this tool. www.techthins.com

For the past few days, the social media have been awash with news of the three boys kidnapped by their newly employed nanny. Since then, the nanny has reached out to the family for a ransom to secure the release of the kids. This is quite sad and we can only wonder what the parents must be going through. According to a report in Punch (as carried by nairaland), the maid was hired through OLX. This not only highlights the risk involved in doing business in cyberspace, but also how OLX has been particularly lax in protecting their users from frauds. As a service providing site, OLX is seen as credible having gotten legitimacy as a platform where buyers and sellers can interact without the services of a middleman. It is this legitimacy that lulls people into a false sense of security when doing business on OLX, only to wake up to the harsh reality that the site has been overran by frauds. As a business, OLX has the responsibility of making their site a safe place for transactions. But what have they done so far? They merely release statements warning people on how to meet up with buyers and sellers when exchanging goods and services. In my opinion, this is just irresponsible of OLX! Their passive approach to ensuring a secure site shows an indifference to the safety of their users. It is their duty to ensure that their platform is only accessed by credible people (both sellers and buyers). There should be some form of verification to ensure the legitimacy of activities being carried out on their site. In everything, security is key. I mean, how careful can you be. If OLX continues to show this lackluster approach to securing their site, then it could indicate that maybe they are in cahoots with these fraudsters! If not, let them prove it by flushing out these deadbeats from their site. Too many Nigerians have fallen victim to them. As for the Orekoyas, our hearts go out to them and it is our sincere hope/prayer that their children be returned to them alive and well. Source: www.techthins.com |
