AutosFollow These Safety Tips If You Find Yourself Driving Alongside A Trailer by TedKing(op): 9:17am On Jun 20, 2019
No matter what kind of vehicle occupies the road at the same time that you do, you have to be extra careful. Driving side by side with a trailer or large truck even demands more caution. Read these simple safety tips to help you drive smart when you have to share the road with these monolithic vehicles!

Trucks and trailers are quite popular in Nigeria, especially Lagos. Actually, you can find them in every country.

Driving around locations like Apapa and its environs, you’re bound to find countless trailers on the road as well as on other highways in Lagos. Usually, some of them prefer to operate at night, that way, they can drive as fast as they want without hitting anyone. But unfortunately, this isn’t the current reality, trailers still operate a lot in broad daylight and a bulk of them are not very careful.

Due to their size and restricted maneuverability, trailers can cause irreparable damage when a collision occurs. In Nigeria, accidents involving trailers have killed people in hundreds and injured a lot more.

Since we’re aware of avoiding them might not be entirely possible, we can find ways to keep ourselves safe once we have to drive by their side. The following safety tips by Naijauto will help minimize the danger to you and anyone else in your vehicle when driving side by side with a trailer.

1. Maintain enough space between you and the trailer
This is the first and most sensible step to take once you find yourself in this situation. Whether you’re driving behind a trailer or beside it, make sure you keep ample distance. If the trailer is behind you and moves too close, change your lane. Unlike cars, trailers need a substantial amount of space than cars do, it takes them time to halt when an emergency occurs.

2. Keep out of a trailer’s blind spot
Trailers are larger and so, they have bigger blind spots than other vehicles. To stay safe, if you can’t see the trailer’s mirrors, it means the driver can not see your vehicle as well. Stay alert and always remain visible.

3. When driving by a trailer, don’t be too fast
The craziest and most dangerous thing you can do is to step fiercely on your accelerator when driving by a trailer. Driving by one can be inevitable most times, so while you’re at it, be extremely vigilant and always do so on the left. Also, avoid cutting the truck off by getting closer into the lane in front of it, the driver might just choose to accelerate and that moment.

4. Be conscious of the trailer size
Generally, your safety is very much dependent on the distance you can keep between your vehicle and the trailer. Trucks need all the possible space on the road, the more reason why you have to maintain your lane strictly.

The trailer could be very large, even 16 times larger than your vehicle. Apart from worrying about the full weight of a trailer on your vehicle, you also need to consider the possibility of a trailer transporting dangerous chemicals. The accident will definitely become worse if this is the case.

5. Avoid any form of distractions
Phone using, and chatting are among the most blamed activities that cause grave accidents for losing the focus on the road and other vehicles. Avoid your phones, ditch plain jokes from your rides, check your mirrors as often as possible, and keep your head up at every second and especially when driving side by side with a trailer. By doing this, you're securing your life, your loved ones' lives, and other road users' lives as well.

AutosLagos-badagry Expressway Causes Loss Of N1b Daily To Traders – ASPMDA by TedKing(op): 8:34am On Jun 20, 2019
ASPMDA - a traders' association has called on Governor Sanwo-Olu to fix the bad Lagos-Badagry expressway which makes them lose a whooping N1 billion every day! Read their explanations below!
The Auto Spare parts & Machinery Dealers’ Association (ASPMDA) has lamented over the dilapidated condition of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, stating that the poor condition of the road leads to the loss of about one billion naira to businesses in the area on a daily basis.

This was disclosed by Chief Daniel Offorkansi, president of the association, while speaking to newsmen at a press conference on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 in his office.

Offorkansi who also doubles as the Chairman of the Trade Fair Stakeholders Forum (TFSF) appealed to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to listen to the cries of both residents and traders in the area by fixing the road.

The President listed five worst sections on the expressway including Under Bridge, Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Volks and Ojo Barracks. He stated that these five areas had the worst damages and needed immediate attention.

https://file.naijauto.com/2019/06/19/clv2DDhU/lagos-badagry-express-road-8477.jpg
Many trailers are scared of falling off on the road

Speaking further, Offorkansi disclosed that no fewer than four containers loaded with goods fall off due to the bad road every day. This has discouraged traders, with about 50 trucks loaded with goods meant to be transported to neighboring West-African countries prevented from moving.

“These are people’s money tied down inside loaded trailers for months due to bad road. Besides, many loaded trucks with goods worth millions of naira that are going to Northern Nigeria, East and South are all stranded at the complex because there is no road to drive after leaving the complex.

“The worst in the last couple of months is that our customers will come to buy goods, but cannot leave with their goods due to fear of falling along the road,” Offorkansi said.
According to the president, traders no longer drive their vehicles to the market due to fear of the road, and traders in the complex close for the day at 3pm to be able to walk home safely, avoiding being attacked by hoodlums in the area.

Car TalkHow Often Should I Drive Car At Least To Protect Its Battery? by TedKing(op): 4:17am On May 22, 2019
If you are one of those who seldom drive their car and wish to know the possible consequences of parking the car for too long or the minimum drive distance you should always do before parking again. Get your answers here!
Naijauto.com has taken into account some drivers who seldom drive their car but still wishes to keep it in shape for any time they feel like using.

To help such category of drivers/car owners, we have brought out this piece at this time. Read on!

First, we will like to inform you that we highly recommend driving any vehicle you might own for 2 to 3 weeks at least in order to avoid dealing with issues like a dead car battery, flat-spotted car tires or any other problems that usually arise from leaving a vehicle parked for many weeks untouched.

You might hear testimonies of some other seldom drivers like yourself claiming that they would usually leave their vehicles parked in the garage for months with no single problem arising when they came back to use it again.

We will not argue that such can’t happen but, you have to realize that you are better off driving your car at least a couple of times every month and target 10 miles minimum, with enough random times you hit over 50mph speed if you can. All that is not meant to just get your vehicle’s engine warmed up but instead the entirety of the vehicle itself.

Keep in mind that by just letting your car to idle for maybe 10 minutes is only going to get the vehicle’s engine warmed up to its normal operating temperature and that’s it.

https://file.naijauto.com/2019/05/16/jxIDw0uA/corvette-collection-exhumed-from-parking-garage-143c.jpg

To really wake up a vehicle’s components such as the seals, gasket, climate system (A/C inclusive), power steering, suspension, brakes, transmission and all of its fluids, you must drive it for several miles.

Check out below, some of the reasons why you should normally not be parking your car for several weeks or even longer without using it.

- Car batteries lose their charge slowly when left sitting idle for long. They even drain more when you start the car after a long period. This is the more reason why you need to drive a car for several miles after picking it up again to allow the battery to recharge a little.

- Car tires easily lose the air in them over time when idle especially if exposed to much of cold weather conditions. As the tires lose air, the entire weight of the vehicle will keep pressing them down causing flat spots on those segments of the tire that are seated on the ground.

- Your vehicle can turn into a living space for Rodents and other animals. Most times when these animals become too hungry, they can begin to feed on your vehicle’s wiring harnesses and all other parts of your car made from organic materials.

- If your gas tank wasn’t full before you park the car, moisture can easily collect in the tank over time. And this will give rise to corrosion which is in no way going to favour you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN22T9yZK8Y

With all the above points, we cannot stress more than to advise you to try avoiding situations whereby your car will be abandoned for extra long periods without being used.

And if you just can’t help it, whenever you pick the car up again, follow all our recommendations above to get it all warm and charged up before parking it again.

AutosFactors To Decide What Type Of Car You Need Most by TedKing(op): 3:57am On May 22, 2019
Knowing the type of car you need makes purchase a lot easier! Here are some great tips to guide you towards making a good decision, briefing over different factors for you to consider!

Almost every Nigerian wishes to own a car someday. But deciding on what type of car you need is not as easy as wanting a sandwich or rice for breakfast. You definitely want a car that can meet your immediate needs and not be a liability most of the time. That's why experts always advice that before you make a car purchase, be sure that the likely benefits outweigh the budgeted monies for running the vehicle. Therefore, carry out a lot of research on the car you desire and if there are cheaper alternatives. That said, here's a quick guide to help you know the type of car you need, by Naijauto.com!

1. Car body styles

Sedan

There are probably more sedans than any other car type in the world. This is probably because it can be used for a wide range of purposes. A sedan can serve as a private car, can be used for taxi services and even for moving a certain amount of luggage. So if you're looking for a compact multipurpose vehicle, a sedan is your best bet.

https://file.naijauto.com/2019/05/20/BJhh921a/nigerian-buying-car-afa8.jpg

Coupe

A couple is a two-door vehicle mainly used as a sports and to show off one's status. If you are looking for a car that can move luggage or convey a family from one place to another, then a coupe shouldn't be in your list of desired car. Besides, also keep in mind that coupes don't do well on the potholes and bumps on most Nigerian roads.

SUV or truck

SUVs and trucks are made to contain more cargo than sedans. If you have a large family or you run a business that involves you conveying items to different places regularly, you should consider buying a truck or an SUV. Additionally, they easily adapt to rugged roads so you won't have to worry when driving off road. You can also consider a hatchback if you want something more compact.

Bus

If you intend to become a commercial driver, and still carry goods and your family from time to time, then a bus is a great idea. There are 12 - 18 seater that would cater for your needs.

https://file.naijauto.com/2019/05/20/BJhh921a/toyota-coaster-bus-a341.jpg

2. Choosing car based on budget

2.1. How much is the car?

How much is the car you wish to buy? Does it exceed your budget? These are questions you need to answer when making a decision on the type of car you need. Keep in mind that in Nigeria, how much a costs also tells you how easy it will be to maintain.

2.2. How much does maintenance cost?

This is where the cost of major parts and how fuel efficient the car is, comes in. You should have a budget for how much you intend to spend on fuel, routine maintenance and miscellaneous, monthly. If from your research, it exceeds your budget, perhaps that type of car isn't for you.

However, if you're a fan of flashy luxury cars, then you can always go for the models you want if you can afford it. These tips will definitely help guide you through the decision you eventually make on what type of car you need.

3. Conclusion

All in all, you should ask yourself what purpose you are buying car for? Is it a daily transport or a commercial vehicle?

Then, decide on car body styles, based on what we suggest above, along with the amount of budget you have to buy your vehicle. On Naijauto.com, we have plenty of used cars for sale with affordable price tags for your reference. Feel free to check and contact the seller for clarification & direct negotiation!

Why can't these sites incorporates verifications or online transactions? Some offers look really good but i'm afraid of scams
I think you can check if a seller's trustworthy by seeing all of their offers on the site. Some websites like Jiji do have verifications on some sellers as far as I know. About online transactions, I personally think it's gonna be an amazing feature to protect your money and avoid scams, and I really hope to see it in the future. But now... undecided
