A shift to other suppliers is not enough, Ben van Beurden says


European countries will not be able to replace Russian natural gas without an energy transition, according to Shell CEO Ben van Beurden.

Increasing gas supplies from Africa and Scandinavia as well as boosting purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) cannot help in replacing Russian energy on the European markets, van Beurden said on Thursday.

“Bringing more LNG to the market, increasing liquefaction and regasification capacity, and raising pipeline supplies from North Africa and Norway are reasonable things,” he said adding that “it is also inevitable to have an energy transition in the medium term.”

There is no way to simply buy more pipeline gas and LNG to completely replace all the Russian gas that we currently consume. This is not feasible,” van Beurden said.

May 5 (Reuters) - The Russian rouble briefly reached its highest level against the dollar since March 2020 on Thursday, supported by capital controls, while stock indexes also climbed as the market watched developments around possible new sanctions against Moscow.

The volatile currency hit a high of 65.31 per dollar in early trading on the Moscow Exchange but by 1339 GMT was at 66.14, which was 0.2% stronger than its Wednesday closing level.


The rouble has rallied in the past few weeks thanks to mandatory conversion of foreign currency by export-focused companies. Also, there has been weak demand for dollars and euros amid waning imports and restrictions on cross-border transactions.

"We think the rouble may be able to advance to USD/RUB 65, even after all of its recent gains," Sberbank CIB said in a note.

Moves in the rouble are sharper than usual as market liquidity has been thinned by central bank restrictions designed to prop up financial stability after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, trading activity is subdued as the markets are open for only three days this week in the middle of Russia's long May holidays.

Against the euro, the rouble was 1% stronger at 69.77 , hovering at levels last seen in February 2020.

War games currently taking place in Kaliningrad - a chunk of Russian territory sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea - involved 'electronic launches' of Iskander ballistic missiles, Moscow's defence ministry said.

Iskander crews practised hitting targets including enemy missile systems, airfields, infrastructure and military command posts, the ministry added, before manoeuvering to avoid a retaliatory strike.

The Iskander is a short-range ballistic missile developed by Russia that went into service in 2006 to replace the Soviet-era Scud and Tochka rockets.

The Swiss government announced plans on Wednesday to set up a gas crisis intervention group to monitor potential “severe” electricity shortages.

The move comes despite last month’s assurances that Swiss energy had been secured by gas supplies from Azerbaijan and North Africa.

Switzerland had already warned companies of potential month-long shortages last year due the lack of an agreement with the EU and a dependence on Germany for around 20% of winter energy.
