What do you want me to explain about the hospital policy of a private hospital for goodness sake. Every private hospital has their own policy, and I cannot speak for each and every private hospital.
Go to a general hospital, provided by the government that has a responsibility towards you.
In the UK by the way, private hospitals don't run emergency services. If you have an emergency, and you rush to a private hospital in the UK, you will be directed to the closest Accident and emergency whuchbis run by the NHS. I'm waiting for someone to try and dispute that

Wait. Are u saying private hospitals dont have a responsibility towards patients? like whats dat hipopotamus(serzly kidding o) oath all about?

The problem is from your end. As a mother you should educate yourself on basic healthcare like taking temperature, blood pressure, etc. It is not every little deviation of health status will warrant going to the hospital. You start off with OTC medications and if symptoms persist after a few days, then you see your doctor. All medications labels tell you so too. You could easily had done all the doctor did in less time, little effort and money.
The internet is not only used for social media. There is a plethora of information available online.

Btw, the doctor or nurse would need history to initiate treatment regimen that's why he was asking you those basic questions. It is a standard practice.
\

My dear, i had already been taking care of my son at home. I checked his temp, and i spoke to a pharmacist who was familiar with him, he gave us d drugs he was already using. My mother inlaw insisted on going to the hospital, and i had to obey (nigerian family ish).

you want him to be exhaustive but when the doctor mentioned money you kept quiet. why didnt you pay for more investigations like you said? hospitals dont sell drugs like pharmacies. they sell services. the cost of the services is inbuilt in the cost of the drugs. the consultation is meant to pay the salaries of the doctors...somebody must pay for rent, medical waste disposal, power and several exhorbitant cost. learn how to pay ist then complain later

Sweetie i paid already. Im complaining now.
Yes. I kept quiet because i felt even preliminary consultation wasnt exhaustive. Im not a doc yeah.. but dont they at least check temp.

Also... defending charges with personal need is already old. Many professionals in many fields also have expenses too. And lab equipments are just as expensive as many other assets in other fields too. Its funny that when it comes to the real deal, people still have to fly to a near backward place like india.

With the way ur charges are defended, one would think u can handle it all.

The major problem in Nigeria healthcare delivery system is that some of our Physicians are too self centred. They don't even want other health Professionals to contribute to the well being of the patients. Unlike other developed countries of the world, a Doctor can't prescribe without the help of a Pharmacist, a Dr can't diagnose without proper laboratory procedures. But here in Nigeria a Dr wants to do everything and at the end patients are dying while some are suffering from the sickness they didn't go to the hospital with.

Imagine a doctor here defending der misbehaviours with the need to drive cars. What the heck! we will pay whatever u charge just handle us well. Thats all.

I fully agree that some private hospitals are problematic, but Some of these aren't exactly negligence or mistreatment... But your own overactive imagination.

A doctor is asking you for your own symptoms if the cough was throaty or a deep chesty cough. These are things you shoukd be able to recognize and answer as a graduate, instead of imagining the doctor was an all-seeing deity.

I also find it hard to believe your brother complained of ear pain and a doctor prescribed malaria medicine. Far more likely the doctor was treating the resulting fever when he was not made aware of the ear pain.

100k for a 2 week treatment in a private hospital for stroke doesn't seem that exorbitant. It's troubling you rate the amount of care a patient receives by whether the patient is on drip or not.

Choi! i know my truth sha. Ur opinion doesnt improve tye doctors attitude. Thats all i need. An improvement in doctors general attitude

If u read my mums case. I didnt rate anything by drip. Pls. I was only unhappy we werent made aware of the physiotherapy that would be needed. Doc only said mum was ok, she shd stop thinkin and avoid salts.

From my three year experience, ive realised theres more to managing stroke than that.

About my brother, the doctor checked his ear and saw nithing so he assumed he was being over reactive like u just did.

I know a throaty cough from a chesty cough. And that is not a measure for a graduate's intelligence. Even a market woman knows that. I was just thinking... cant he use his stethoscope thingy at least? or is that just a fancy necklace for doctors?

Can you just see that? Even the big hospitals eyinjuege is prescribing are not trustworthy. All i am fighting for is a change in the doctors attitudes. Many of them are always money oriented

It happened to me recently. My last child (child no 3) was a beatiful baby girl , most beautiful of all the three. Four weeks after she was born, she started loosing weight so I took her to d peadiatric unit of the health center to see d doc. A doc attended to me and after telling him my observation thinking he will diagnose her instead he just prescribed folic acid and vitamin c. After leaving his office I went to d nursing station, it was there I overheard him telling one of d nurses that my baby had down syndrome
Syndrome. On hearing this, I quickly log in to Goole to know what is the meaning of down syndrome. To cut the long story short I lost d baby four weeks after because she also had hole in the heart and she has lost all energy due to hard labour of sucking. If d doctor had told me earlier I would have known how to spoon feed her till God takes control of the situation. Nigerian doctors! Even though this one is supposed to be more experience being a government employed doctor.

Awwww. This hurts so bad. This is what i am talking about o. These are the harms doctors negligence cost us and they defend it talking about cars and houses they want to buy

Your mum had a stroke. That's a major event, she needed admission and she was admitted. However, you're not happy with the surrounding of the hospital. There are always other options/ hospitals with beautiful aesthetics which you could have taken your mum to. If you live in Lagos, you can try Reddinton, Roding, St Nicholas. They have quite nice rooms there. However, spending two weeks in a hospital after a stroke is not too long a stay, and at the rate of 25K per week is just dandy.
Meanwhile, your mum still needs regular follow up to monitor her bp, sugar levels and other things. People that have had a stroke before are at a higher risk of having another. The risk factor that caused the stroke in the first instance is probably still present.

Ma'am... once again... i said some. We arent in lagos. Hospitals shd av standards and as grateful as i was fr the 50000 per week... not 25000, they didnt equip us with enough info as per her follow up. It wasnt until months later we met with other doctors, and we were told the right steps we should have taken immediately..

This follow up u mentioned was my complaint. They didnt tell us anything. All they cared fr was dat 50k per week is just dandy. If we werent conscious and concerned, she mught have deteriorated and probably never gone back to normal.

Don't let their suit and flashy cars deceive you, bankers are broke! Damn broke! I even heard a recent trend that bankers these days earn less than 70k and yet when you see them in clubs you would think they are Tony Elumelu's sons! Pretence everywhere.

Imagine this particular Zenith big boy has been disturbing my line for a hang out.I thought of honouring the invitation since its just a hang out.

This bloody cretin is so proud that even his shirts exude pride,he displays his expensive shoes on bbm, hangs out in exotic bars, always balling with the big guys not knowing he wasn't even a full staff of the bank.

He came to pick me few minutes to 6pm,took me to this strange lounge with flowers all over and ordered Asun. The waitress surprisingly brought a very small plate of Asun for both of us. Before I even picked my toothpick, this guy has finished the whole plate and the onions as well.I was just observing! I then called the waitress and asked how much was the asun, she said 500naira! I told her to bring 2plates. This shameful thing finished his plate and entered mine,i didn't talk.

That wasn't even the height! After this useless display on our way out he called the waitress and demanded for his change for drinks he bought, I was thinking the change was big that he had to keep us waiting! Hell no! 100naira!! He couldn't dash the waitress 100naira bloody stingy fellow.Yet when he starts displaying those fake dps one would think he's Jim Ovias Son! Fake life everywhere. Ladies don't get carried away, all na packaging, they have nothing! Just living a borrowed life style to fit in.

I think the problem a lot of Naija doctors have is poor communication with their patients.
Patients too also need to be informed and learn to actively participate in their treatment.

Yassssss! Doctors can easily evaluate a patient and determine if dey r oversabi or over emotional and decide how much they let them in on. Just carry them along. Doesn't strictly mean full disclosure.

I spoke about a general hospital the other time, you felt I was trying to say you can't afford private hospital. No doctor wiil tell you to go away with a lump on your breast. In a general hospital, you'll be referred to the appropriate clinic- surgical clinic.
Its even in private hospital that they'll be eager to treat you,ump as that's surgery, and more money for them. They'll also answer you speedily compared to a general hospital as they have fewer patients.
Now I want you to check the hospitals you've been going to, because you said you had a lump on your breast, you were not examined to see if its there or not and then you were simplybsent home because you're a youngvlady and not likely to have cancer. That's dangerous practice, try and go to hospitals that you are sure that most of their doctors can be verified which includes general hospitals

Thank you. Thats what I did July last year and Im grateful to God I took that decision. If i didnt have a friend who died of bone cancer a few years back. Maybe I would be careless enough to ignore like he said. Eversince, I have been very careful about the doctors I talk to.

Also... i have been very careful of mentioning hospital names. That particular hospital is very big in Ikeja . People have a lot of confidence in it. If ur not going to general, they tell you ur okay there.

The best test to diagnose an ulcer is an endoscopy. It's invasive, and has its own associated risk. It has to be done in an operating room, and its very very expensive. I think it may cost at least 70k.
Now, in Naija, doctors always have to consider costs when dealing with patients.
There are different things that may cause chest pains, the site of the chest pain is also equally important. Certain questions you ask will help you to determine the cause. In fact, in medicine it's believed that 80-90% of your diagnoses should be made on asking patients questions alone, and the remaining 10-20% confirmed by your investigations. A good history/questioning goes a long way.

Thank you so much for this explanation. Ofcourse, i wouldnt want to undergo an endoscopy simply because i complained of a recurrent chest pain. From my lay mans point of view though... The girl eats well, and even because of my moms special diet, we all follow a conscious meal plan and the doctor knows this. I would wonder, what causes ulcer? Is it not imbalance in stomach digestive fluids? Maybe shes been taking ibruprofen, or the likes of aspirin or hunger?

. Also... how was he able to extrapolate ulcer from all other possible sympthoms a chest pain might carry.?

im happy you said a good history and questioning. Because i believe that means virtually what i am talking about. Listen to my complaints, dnt discard any discomfort i mention however useless they may seem. Ask questions and make sure im telling the truth. Dnt just b flippant. dont discard my observations maybe because i dnt knw how to describe them well.
Thats d painful part.

@Eyinjuege im nit insisting on the charges. God knows. I carried myself to a private hospital fully aware of the charges. I dont expect that a doctor gives a person ulcer drugs after i have desctibed chest pains and then tell me... if it works its ulcer. If it doesnt, come back.

Apart from a patients description, arent there other physical tests that can be carried out? in order to ascertain d problem?

You are the one being defensive now aren't you? No one is shutting you up. What determines the overall cost of the treatment or services you receive in a place? I don't think you're in the position to decide how much you should be charged. Some hospitals take as much as 20000 for a consultation minus the medication that you're given.
I asked you to try a general hospital not because their services are crap, but rather because you don't pay for consultation, and you can always take the prescription you're given to any pharmacy of your choice thereby saving you costs. #5000 naira is much less than £20 GBP, at the rate things are in Naija now, and that's very small money.
Now, worldwide healthcare is expensive, but in developed countries, their govt makes it a priority and spend an unimaginable amount of money just to provide services which may not even be utilised atimes. But it is still their responsibility to provide it cos you never can know when it might be needed.
In naija, its not a priority, and very very few citizens can afford a standard private hospital. Infact, I doubt if 5% of Nigeria's population can afford standard private hospital, but they are available.

N.B- You could have simply asked your doctor what he meant by a throaty/ chesty cough. A lot of folks with no medical background know what a chesty cough is BTW.
You could have just described the cough from your observations, especially in children as that may help with the diagnosis.

I hear you. Im not against the charges. I am against the general response. If you are a doctor, in your practice, be exhaustive, dont just make conclusion. I made several instances of what makes me reluctant. Dont base your essays on just the first. Also... we all would go straight to the govt hospitals if not for the fact tht they are already packed full and you wait hours in line for treatment.

You say wordwide healthcare is expensive, thats why.dey made me pay 2000 for drugs they just went out to buy frm a chemist in my presence.

OP, you went to a private hospitals without compulsion.

If you couldn't afford the consultation fees, you should have gone to a general hospital.

If you have no trust in your doctor's, then there's no point going to the hospital.
You were asked if your child's cough was throaty, yet you're taking offence.

Who should know if not you or the grandma taking care of the child? Your doctor doesn't live with your child and he'll only act based on what you tell him.

Hello, self defensive much? What is the definition of a throaty cough? How do i successfully tell d definition of a throaty cough versus chest cough? i will only use my assumptions based on what i observe, knowing fully well thay d doctor has a much better knowledge than i do.

I never said i couldnt afford all the treatment. I never said they were all crappy. I have some very good friends who got me thru a lot. You canot shut me up by saying go take the alternative, nobody forced you. What is bad is bad.

It would be nice, that people get what they pay for in terms of a doctors attention. If u charge 5k for consultation, please treat me attend to me, dont just dismiss me like they would in a govt hospital.

Also... try and calm down. Its not your truth. Dont take things personal.
