I get where Teechuddley is coming from.
No matter how little or much you are charging, a Dr should endeavour to communicate with his patients and know when to refer or invite a specialist.
Its not the big money she is complaining about, its the attitude.

I use GH, even the hospital for my HMO, I dont send. At least in GH, I sometimes plan with the nurses so they don't put my file with the overbearing Dr that never listens to me.

Its not the patient's fault that the economy is so bad that your true worth isn't achieved (in Naira), its not our fault that the workload is killing.

If you are a Dr or aspiring to be one, dont see this topic as an insult, let it give you an insight to how your patient feels.
Be honest with yourselves....tell me one time you havent felt so disgusted with your Snrs with the way they spoke to a patient.

And Helpee, REALLY? How old are you? 5?
You had to go into her diary to dig out points and I am quite sure you didnt start from the beginning.
What if you knew her personally? You for don tear cloth o!
I can imagine what a fight between your siblings or spouse will look like. Plenty of mud!

Pheew! if my gospel reaches only one person... it is not a waaaaist. Finally, someone who isnt out to abuse the docs or abuse d patients. I wasnt out to abuse any doctor neither was i unappreciative. All i wanted to talk about was the attitude o. God bless you zainee. Ignore that guy. His monicker screams helpmeee with a silent m. He should be helped. In every way.

People here keep telling you that healthcare is expensive, because in your posts you kept emphasising the amount you paid - making it seem like you paid a huge amount.

Let me state what most patients and relatives don't know.
Healthcare is not just expensive, some charges are quatifiable most are not quantifiable.

Patients usually try to quantify the costs ( making the hospital seem like its a bakery or pharmacy store) when they come up with story such as they only gave drip and 2 tablets and asked me to pay 15,000 - how do you pay for the knowledge behind that decision?.

Hello, its not the drip or the tablet that he is selling - you could get that from a pharmacy store. It is the knowledge of the service that he is rendering that he is charging.

If you did not go to the hospital, could you have known if that friend sustained a fracture or not, could you have known what tests you needed? Could you have known if the discomfort you felt in your breast which scared you was cancer or not.

You go to a lawyer and he tells you what to do without selling you anything and charges you N20,000 for just giving his informed opinion on an issue. Some agents charge 50,000 or more for just telling you the process to get some things done. But when people come to hospitals they come with calculators in their head trying to calculate number of drips and cotton wool used. Since you know how much cotton wool and spirit costs why not go to where they're being sold and help yourself with it.

Oh mehn . The first one, I stated d price I paid for d drugs they gave to me, because It was given along with the receipts they got from the pharmacy they got it from.

The second one about mums health was that we paid up. We didn't owe, and the doctor did not give us full information when he was discharging us.
The third was in comparison to another hospital that treated me better for less.

There is a reason I stated the cost in those cases. Notice d other cases I didn't. It's not that they were completely free but the price was beside the point.

You people say I'm emphasising money without taking the purpose of those charges in the context into consideration. Obviously, u people will just defend everything one way or the other.

I would pay anything for the doctor to let me know I'm fine concerning the breast lump case. Also, he could av referred me to someone else. But he only told me they attend to women over forty.
It happens in my profession too. People try to assess why ur charging so much just to crunch some figures. But at least I treat my clients well as long as they pay my charges. That's my point pls.

I understand you. Only hope u understand me as well.

so next time, talk about only what you know and owns.....CARTOON and kid games. i thought you said it is contemporary art. let us talk about what we know which is healthcare. By the way, we are negotiating with a state govt to set up a medical village adjacent to lagos. it is a multibillion naira project and will take off by HIS GRACE come 2017. i hope you wont come there asking for 20naira panadol. i just have your time today. i am only using you to relax after a strenous week. now you can gerrrrout of my mention

U are as dumb as a rock. Beating up a dead horse. You cannot read, or comprehend, and im concerned for ur existence. Apparently, i dont deserve medical care because i watch cartoons and LOVE it. My profile picture is d comtemporary art.

I hope doctors are patient enough to go thru a patients problems d way you carry ur honurable self to skim thru a persons diary to make a point. You just showed off blatant stupidity in doing so. Ur too irrelevant fr me to do same. Ur mentioning me and asking me to leave ur mentions. God is trying o.

Hope u guys pay d contractors well to do a good job so it wont add to another abandoned or collapsed project. Also a quality pjt like ur saying in dis country has never come to completion within a year. And ur still negotiating. Shows how little u know abt construction too.

Ur even trying to defend ur waste of space. I pray you find what ur looking for in life. Maybe that will make u a better person.

my friend, you are so so ignorant. you probably got half baked education. no wonder the doctor was asking you sound questions like the characteristic of the cough and you were so concerned about what you know nothing about . for your information, health care is so expensive. how do i care about your health without money? if i care about your health money....i mean good money must be available. to set up an averagely standard hospital, youu need nothing less than 100million but to set up a real standard hospital, you need billions and it is either people pay for it or insurance pays and the cost of their paracetamol will not be 20naira. it is the charity mentality of you people that destroyed our health sector. go back and thank the doctor for taking care of your ward. you didnt pay his school fees

One would think you were too good to reply me. But here you are with all your education and intelligence, beating the same point, even though the person u are talking to already got.the point. You now resort to the cheap and immature attitude of insulting a person. I hope that makes your sunday. As for me, i will be the bigger person and ignore you. I don't blame the op I blame the docs for not explaining the reason behind their decisions. I took my time to read your post and most of what u complained about is due to poor communication btw you and your doctor. I will try and make you understand certain things.

U said they did not feed ur mum there is a reason, Stoke patients are at risk of aspiration that is y they sometimes don't feed oraly the drip she is recived is like food if you don't know
Ur mum most likely had an hemorrhagic stroke.the treatment is usually palliative except in severe cases where surgery is needed

u said doctor doctor was asking if cough was throaty and din't check the eyes,no doctor was born with MBBS cert it was painstakingly aquired with at least 6 yrs of training plus a year of intership so if he din't check the eyes it means based on the information you gave there was no reason to do so and throaty is an English word not a medical term all u had to do was ask for clarification.

U said they rejected the test you brought.most times this is because they don't trust the results. I have been in the hospital when a patient brought test results frm another hospital. The result estimated serum sodium to be 220mg/dl a figure that is not compatible with life

U said they charged ridiculous amount, whether you like it or not health care is expensive.
A brand new ultrasound machine cost around 6 million naira, anesthesia machine cost 10 million
Operating table btw 500,000 to 1milion. So how much do u want the doc to charge for his services after buying such expensive equipment

I dont know if u are a medical practitioner but ur the only one who has made sense in the process of opposing whatever i have said. Yes i am not a numb skull, and i will always stand by what is true.

When i said he didnt check his eye, im not expressly saying thats what he must do... i meant that he didnt even look at the boy, and check his eye or temperature... or whatever. I dnt know. But i know docs do smtn. Anything.

Any doctor can charge any amount they want. U cant go to a persons establishment and force your own idea on them. My pain is... after paying however little u have charged, I expect to b cared for the way i saw them care for me at some other place... its not about the money. Remember this post says "some"

I have been to hospitals that take care or at least show empathy, and i have been to others where the doctor has a money conscious you-can-go- to-hell attitude.

Many doctors/people here refuse to accept that there can be flaws in some doctors approach to health care, and they cry unappreciation. That just shows the God like complex someone talked about earlier.

ok. no point arguing with you. next time take your child to a charity hospital where they will sell paracetamol for 20naira. you paid less than 20dollars and you want consultation to be exhaustive. the backward india you talked about will collect millions from you to do common cs and people like you will pay 50k and rush to nairaland to complain. na poverty sha.

Ur still not caring about health care, but about money.
Enjoy ur millions while i manage in my poverty trying to find good health care. Are u happy now?

You see why I said ignorant Nigerians are the worst of them all. You educate them, yet they still choose ignorance. Any Dr that wastes for test result before treating meningitis did not go to med school. You must start treatment first because the more time you waste the worse the complications. The way people bash doctors on nairaland sha. I wonder if it is the same Nigerian doctors that are excelling in other countries. In case people don't know the Saudi ministry of health alone recruited over a 100 doctors last year and just employed about 200 in March. Also mopping up B.sc nurses aggressively. The doctors are tired of the system too, and are leaving never to return. We can continue the blame game here.

Im sure when they get to saudi, they will up der game since the stakes are higher.
Obviously, some doctors are more concerned about the returns/rewards.

Im not defending our healthcare cause we all know it leaves so much to be desired. But I laugh when atients expect the kind of treatment they watch in movies but are only able to pay 2% of what these guys pay in other countries.

See despite those bills you people complain of as being exorbitant, many private hospitals can't even pay for the services of a permanent doctor. That's why you go to some hospitals and they say they ask you to wait for them to call a doctor.

Healthcare is that expensive. if you were to take your mum who suffered stroke to one of those hospitals in the foreign movies we watch, guess how much you would have paid without insurance?

Why do u think we need to be caught up in the fantasies of movies to think we deserve some care? Look, we all know this is not even a developing country. Its underdeveloped. When i say mistreat, i dont mean malpractices... i meant the way they handle people, behave towards people.

My citations are from personal experience and therefore cannot be exhaustive of an apparent ill in our society we now see as normal

These are called out of pocket costs. They're not even expensive sef. You know how much one car costs? Or to build a house? Or to pay rent for that hospital premises? Or to enrol a child in a good-quality school? These things are what the medical staff aim to acquire and do with proceeds from their services. Try the NHIS and other health insurance schemes. Nigerians should realise they must spend money on others in the same way they want to get money. The faster the money goes round, the bigger the GDP of the country

Hope u realise that every professional feels entitled to money to achieve all of this, and therefore, its no point. And when a patient is willing to pay, and has paid, do u now send them out to die? Because my problem with that issue was the fact that doc saud mum was well... go and live her life. We were expecting him telling us what to do... he just said dnt think too much, avoid salts.

He never told us we needed to monitor her bp regularly, he never told us we should all change our meal plan in order to help her eat healthy. He never told us she needed physiotherapy at least three times a week.

Some other doctor did.
Did he need more money to help us out?

Dear aggrieved OP i apologise. Not for the Doctor but for the system. We have all been screwed by the system at one point or the other. The doctor had his fault his patient communication skill left much to be desired. The part where you were worried about cost it is not totally his fault. Health care is expensive. You think it's cheaper in govt hospitals? No its not it's just that govt has subsidised it so that a CT Scan that should cost you around 150000- 200k now cost u around 70-100k. Don't let house MD and Greys anatomy series fool ya reality is very different. That being said for fees received services must be rendered i.e the doc collected money to treat he must treat (I'm saying all this from a one sided story - yours). BTW why do people think doctors' consultations should be free? Lawyers' aren't LoL.

I never said it should b free. I said he should at least be compassionate in the process.

I never compare nigeria ti any country abroad let alone the fuction those ones concoct.

Doctors are entitled to charge whatever they want. I just want value for my miney, and to be treated properly.

Theres nothing like good health. A sane person would pay anything for it.
Its sad when ur willing to pay anything to get smtn, and ur given a second class product.

, your own is even small,I was paying 4500 for a month prescription if carbimazole, this is apart from consultations fees oh, which I pay each time I come for refill oh, one day I was out of money and out of drug, decided to check around, my dear na so I buy the drug at one pharmacy at Ikeja at the price of 670 for a packet, and that packets lasts for 30 days oh, i once went to a hospital and and they requested I ran some test at their lab to find out what was wrong, no problems, I did at a cost of 3k, after that nko, I had malaria and typhoid which I had suspected, no problems again as I try as much as possible to seek trained medical personnel advice and not to self medicate. Na so they packed all cheap antibiotics and folic acids, those types they sell 90 naira and amoxicillin , the cheap ones they sell 100naira for packets, and they charged me 4000 naira, after the dosage finished, I was getting worse oh, I went back again and they charged me 7000 with some injections I can't tell what they were. I was already worse that I was before I came there, was about to go to worst when I borrowed myself sense and collected a prescription from a friend, a family nurse prescribed it for him and I had ignored it at the beginning because of my over sabi, went and bought the ciprotab with some vitamins and one malaria frugal line that from one pharmacy at the total price of 1200, I threw out all those useless drugs from hospital, I had shown them to the nurse at the pharmacy, she laughed and showed them to me and their prices, within two days, I was back to my feet but continued to finish my dosage. I did rather go to general hospital and collect prescription , then go to pharmacy to buy. I have lost count of number of times I have self medicated after wasting money on some stupid hospital.

Can you just imagine. And many of them defend all this by saying we have to drive cars. Medical treatment is expensive.
