https://dailypost.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/image6.jpg Governor Olusegun Mimiko of State Governor has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for taking the initiative to reconstruct the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which he described as the busiest in Africa. Mimiko described the move as an indication that the Jonathan’s led government is sensitive and has good intentions. Jonathan had on Friday inaugurated the reconstruction of the road, which will gulp N167bn; the road is expected to reach completion by 2017. The governor in a statement issued in Akure on Saturday by his Commissioner for information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, lauded the Federal Government for the move. He said, “The generation unborn will remain grateful to the Jonathan administration for the total overhauling of the road which has overtime become a death trap. “This step is indeed noble and the name of this administration has no doubt been written in gold for taking the bull by the horn and ensuring a lasting solution is found to the death trap called Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. “Quite a number of lives have been wasted on this road because of its bad state and at last, President Jonathan has provided the solution that hitherto seemed elusive to make the road safe for use.” Mimiko noted that the advantage of a good Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to the health and economy of the nation could not be over emphasized. Mimiko said, “A road that is used by an estimated 250,000 vehicles daily is too important to be left in bad shape especially if the over 600 lives said to have been lost on the road in 2012 alone should be taken into consideration.” The governor while noting that the reconstruction of the road would be a major achievement to be recorded by any government in the country added that the credit for the project should be given to President Jonathan. He therefore called on the President to ensure that the project was professionally handled and delivered on time. He also appealed to road users to take cognisance of the repair and drive more carefully on the road. Source: http://adevision..com/2013/07/lagos-ibadan-reconstruction-generation.html |
LONDON (AFP) – Britain is planning to force visitors from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and other countries whose nationals are deemed to pose a “high risk” of immigration abuse to provide a cash bond before they can enter the country, a report said Sunday. The Sunday Times newspaper said that from November, a pilot scheme would target visitors from those three countries plus Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ghana. Visitors aged 18 and over would be forced to hand over £3,000 ($4,600, 3,500 euros) from November for a six-month visit visa. They will forfeit the money if they overstay in Britain after their visa has expired. Initially the scheme will target hundreds of visitors, but the plan is to extend it to several thousand, according to the broadsheet’s front-page report. The weekly paper said the move by Home Secretary Theresa May is designed to show that Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party is serious about cutting immigration and abuses of the system. The populist United Kingdom Independence Party has been encroaching on the Conservatives’ traditional core vote in recent months. Cameron wants annual net migration down below 100,000 by 2015. “This is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain,” May was quoted as saying. “In the long run we’re interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services.” A Home Office official said the six countries highlighted were those with “the most significant risk of abuse”. Last year 296,000 people granted six-month visas were from India, 101,000 from Nigeria, 53,000 from Pakistan and 14,000 each were from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh |
Hajiya Jummai Abdul, a Nutritionist at the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, said on Monday that pawpaw (papaya) was a remedy for the treatment of various diseases. Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that pawpaw prevented heart diseases and lowered the risks of many ailments, including cancer. She said pawpaw was a rich source of antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and special digestive enzymes that had a remarkable internal and external effects. “Ripe pawpaw is a great source of antioxidant vitamin `C’, vitamin `E’ and carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene a naturally occurring chemical that gives fruits and vegetables a red colour. “The rich antioxidant contents of pawpaw, particularly, were beneficial in reducing the risk of developing cancer,’’ she said. According to Abdul, the high levels of these valuable nutrients helped to protect the skin against free radicals known to cause damage leading to wrinkles and other visible signs of ageing. She added that pawpaw also helped in wound healing, burns and assisted in the treatment of skin problems like acne, blemishes and age spots. She explained that the high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in pawpaw might also protect against developing cataracts, glaucoma and other chronic eye diseases. “Other good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin are spinach, broccoli and the yolks from free range eggs,’’ the nutritionist said. Abdul said the high level of vitamins `C’ and `E,’ along with antioxidants like beta-carotene and lycopene in pawpaw, could help reduce the oxidisation of cholesterol in the arteries. According to her, cholesterol oxidisation is considered a dangerous process, potentially leading to arteries blocking with plaque that can result in heart attacks. “Increasing one’s intake of these antioxidants from healthy food like pawpaw may help improve blood flow to the heart and reduce the risk of developing heart disease,” she said. Abdul also explained that pawpaw was a good source of foliate which helped control homocysteine levels in the bloodstream. NAN reports that high levels of homocysteine in the blood is known to damage blood vessels and is considered another potential cause of cardiovascular disease. She further explained that the beneficial fibre in pawpaw helped to lower undesirable low density lipoprotein( LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood by inhibiting its absorption during digestion. Abdul also said the enzymes in pawpaw, especially the green fruit, could improve digestion by breaking down proteins into the individual amino acids. “There are several important compounds that make pawpaw a beneficial fruit for reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancers.” Abdul recommended that to improve the skin, relieve digestion problems, protect the eyes, heart and possibly lower risk of many diseases like cancer; one should cultivate the habit of eating pawpaw. If Wizkid can damage a #15Million Porche Panamera car in less than two months,If D'Banj can wear a #3Million suit just for a show,If Davido can refer to a #10Million endorsement deal as chicken change,If P-Square can buy just a property for #400 Million,If Don Jazzy can pop a $1.5Million champagne.
