EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by temmitats(f): 8:25pm On Nov 05, 2017
Hi everybody, I'm so sorry I've been AWOL. I've had a lot on my plate, I took my toefl in October and I finally got my scores a week ago. R28 L30 S26 W29 and a total score of 113.
I honestly was expecting a not so stellar score because my mind was all over the place some days to my exam due to some issues. I flopped in one of my speaking tasksand I was expecting a bad score actually. In general I thank God. How are applications going? I jut had to update everybody cause I gained a lot from this thread. I wish everybody the best.

Good evening, everyone. Please I need some help.

I'm planning to take GRE and TOEFL by the end of this year. However, I have a big problem with means of identification. I don't have national ID (just NIN slip for four years now), I don't drive, I don't have anything. The international passport I have has expired. And I also have a problem with the passport (my name on all my documents is "Timilehin", but on the passport it's "Oluwatimilehin"wink.

I applied for voter's card last week and have got the paper card (they said PVC won't be until the end of the year).

I want to know what my options are, that is, what kind of I.D. I can use to write the exams, with the situation I'm in. Thank you.
The only acceptable means of Identification for the GRE is the Nigerian Passport. You have to renew your passport

Hello Gurus in the house. I emailed a Professor and fortunately he replied. This is his reply below:

Dear XXXX,

Thanks for your email. I would like to schedule a 1-hour skype interview with you. Please prepare a 30-minutes PowerPoint presentation covering all the research studies you have carried out so far and send back. We will then schedule the interview time.

Prof. XXXX
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have an idea of what he wants. However, this is the first time I am getting this kind of reply from a potential supervisor. I just need useful suggestions from you guys that will enhance my performance.I am a PhD applicant going in for Mechanical Engineering. Thanks a lot.
This should be good news for you. If you have any publications talk about them, If not talk about your undergraduate project, if you carried out experiments, talk about the laboratories and the analysis of your results.

any one took the test yet ?
can anybody who took the test recently share their experience please.
that would be helpful to the rest of us yet to take it
What exactly do you want to know? Have you read recent exam transcripts? There are a few some pages back. You can ask some questions and I'll try to answer them.

Bros, how do your hear these things grin. Help our ears too biko.
I've seen a lot of suggestions on this forum; UTK, UNL, Clemson, cleveland et al. However, when I check some of their research groups in my field, I realize they only admit PhD candidates. Is there something we're missing? Yet the graduate coordinators keep saying " all international MS Applicants are duly considered for graduate assistantship" undecided
I've noticed that too, they have at most one or two Msc students

Your choice is great and you have a very good profile to go with it. I asked about you and Chemical engineering because of UW-Madison. You know it is a top school for my program as well.

Clemson should be on your list as well. And Central Missouri. I hear they are both very good and well funded for your course. Try Auburn as well if you have the time.
I actually reported scores to Clemson University but now I'm not so sure about the school. I spoke to a grad student that informed me the professor I had plans of working with doesn't have any ongoing projects, getting funding on admission will be very slim. I'll check out the others you mentioned.

I applied to USC and College Park (both costing $165). I could not do Boulder as they don't accept terminal MS (they want direct PhD). I am now crossed between UDelaware and College Station but my spirit is saying Delaware. I shot the Grad coord an email on Friday and her response on Monday will seal my fate. Their deadline is Nov 1 for Spring.

It has not been easy finding my program for M.S thesis-option against spring.

What about you? Are you a Chemical engineer?
okay there's progress, I believe everything will work out well for you. No I studied Building but I'm planning to do my grad study in construction engineering and management and that's a sub-division of civil engineering.

Hello my people, I'm in a very sad situation and it's really frustrating that I have been on this admission since June for spring and it's seems everything is falling apart for me!! I have a Bsc in Agricultural science from Funaab and I have applied to at least 6 schools and due to my lack of information I applied to some schools who's admission was either needed WES evaluation or GRE. But I recently applied to Arkansas State University and Murray State University and I just got a message from Murray State University saying and I quote " There have been some discrepancies with some transcripts that's why I ask you to have the Transcripts sent again directly to me. My address is below.."
and Arkansas State University saying they are waiting for my bank to confirm the amount in my Father's account!!! I need advice people from here... ASUU is on strike and I have sent my official transcript to the schools before the strike and asking for another is really shocking to me and there is no time any more... please what advise do you guys have for me... I'm really down I can't even eat self!!! my head is very heavy and hot.. I have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and asking it all like this is really sad for me... please help me... undergraduate degree 3.24/5.0 and TOEFL 91 ...any school I can apply with no transcript? I have on-official transcript with me!!! Help me guys
why not inform them of the strike and explain how it wouldn't be possible for you to get an official transcript sent at this time, with probably evidence of the strike( a snapshot of a news headline). If on the other hand they indicated right from the start that they don't accept unofficial transcripts then that's a fault on your end.

do you have your transcripts or a statement of your result? If you do, Google WES GPA calculator and follow the instructions to get a fairly accurate conversion

Immediately after? Yikes.
I reported only two.

Anyways, actual application now is the main thing.
I'm in the works of trying to articulate my fit for the program.
Awwww, then you'll have to pay for the other scores to be sent, but honestly most of the scores we choose on that day we end up not applying there. At least for most cases I've seen here.

I really have to respond to this. To me, his suggestion is just a load of bullshit. Let me put it this way, American universities represent the best of America in terms of tolerance, cospomolitan and progressive thinking. I think the least thing you should worry about is racism, especially in the university environment. Is there really any school in America in which the student body is not over 75% white except historically black colleges? Therefore if you want to study in the US, be prepared to be in the minority. Blacks are only 13% of American population and it becomes something like 5% on university campuses.

During my orientation, I was the only black person out of about 400 to 500 students in the hall. It was only on the second day that I saw a lady from Kenya and another American born Nigerian. I think I am also the only Black PhD student in my department, and this is at UT Dallas, a southern school.(Blacks make up a higher percentage of southern states population).

However, do I give a damn? Hell No. Do I feel different or inadequate? Of course not. Be confident and carry yourself with pride my lady.
I agree with you, Even I experience racism, I do not think that should be a significant factor in my choosing schools, funding is more important.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by temmitats(f): 3:52pm On Sep 04, 2017
DreManuel:
Except you go to predominantly Black Colleges like Tuskegee University, you will always find yourself as a minority wherever you meet yourself in the States given the fact that the population of the US itself is predominantly white with ~14% black (including the likes of Vin Diesel). So I suggest you do not sweat the race thing. But it is there, and you can be mentally prepared for it especially if it would be the first time you would be exposed to such.

Again, we African Blacks tend to react differently to "racism" from African-Americans given their history in the US. So, you might want to go with an open mind and interact with all people the same whether Black, Yellow, Brown or White. And please don't assume every white is racist. I have met random White people who are more friendly than Blacks including fellow Africans in the States.

In addition, racism might be more predominant in the South such as Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, etc than the North and the Midwest. But there are racists everywhere such as there are tribalists in Nigeria (and can even be worse).

Wherever you go, just be proud of who you are. Perhaps, being the only Black in a class will give you the privilege to showcase the talents we have as a people.

In short, if you want to worry about racism, you should not worry about studying or living in the US!
Exactly my thoughts, I don't think it will phase me that much, I mean living in Nigeria is enough to toughen anyone up.

I'm still expecting responses from other grad students before making my decision. I also plan to email professors in my proposed research area.

How much can your faith take? There would always be outliers to every case and you could be.

That does not mean we are trivializing what he said (as he gave something worthy of note or consideration).

Remember Drhopeful said she almost did not apply to UVA again as she thought her writing GRE a second time and not getting the grad cord/ or POI to respond to her questions spelled doom about her chances. Well, you know the rest.

There are racists everywhere by the way.
You're right, I was able to learn that the diversity scholarship is awarded to US citizens and Permanent residents, This wasn't stated on their website at all. At least now I know that.
