As we gradually move towards the close of 2018, I thought to drop a post relating to sand, how to calculate and estimate its quantity so you won't feel cheated by sellers.


The density of sand is affected by whether the sand is packed (rammed) or loose, and whether it is wet or dry.


When it is packed, the grains of sand are forced into a tighter formation and more matter is in the volume.


When the sand is wet, water is in the sand, also affecting the total matter in the volume.


The mean density of the different conditions of sand are as follows:


Loose Sand: 1442 kg/m3. This dry sand has been moved or otherwise agitated to loosen the natural packing process.


Dry Sand: 1602 kg/m3. This is sand in its natural undisturbed form where it has been partially packed by rain and gravity over time but is now dry.

When dredging for the purpose of land reclamation or stockpiling for construction, one thing is paramount and that thing is SAND. It is the quantity and quality of the sand available at the proposed dredging site that determines the success of the project to be carried out. The quantity of sand deposit and the cost of dredging out this sand to a discharge site is what translates to the amount of money you make. So why not determine and evaluate all this by firstly, carrying out a sand search?
Sand Search simply means exploring water bodies with the objective of locating areas with sand deposits in commercial quantity, to be exploited by dredging for land reclamation or stockpiling for the purpose of construction.

The importance of sand search in the dredging industry cannot be overemphasized. Sand search has been trivialized in Nigeria’s dredging industry and has resulted in some cases of failed projects due to faulty sand search reports among other factors. Entrepreneurs usually make the mistake of sidetracking professionals in their quest for cheap labour and end up with regrets and huge losses.
The need for an accurate sand search report before the acquisition of a reclaimable or stockpiling site is very important and is the first step towards carrying out any project in this business. Cases of people rushing to acquire and pay for sites is common, on assumption that sand to be mined is available almost everywhere in the water body. Non-availability of sand in such sites after payment have been made for land, have led to huge losses to such client especially when a non-refundable mobilization/demobilization fee of millions of naira had been paid to a dredging company...

What I am about to discuss in this post might surprise most readers but it is the reality of this business.
So to continue from where I stopped in the previous post, I will unravel the mystery surrounding most diesel engine operations.

It really feels good to be back writing articles on this blog again after about 5 months. It has been a busy period as I had to handle a site analysis and site set up job for reclamation work somewhere in the southern part of Nigeria. Also, a difficult decision making period too as I was also offered a job contract by a Qatari dredging firm based in Qatar, but due to some personal reasons, I was unable to honour that particular contract. I hope we can still work together sometime in the future.


With that out of the way, let's go to the business of the day.

In the business of dredging, one key factor is time. To maximize profit and minimize cost in every aspect of a dredging business, you must have to be time conscious from the project planning to logistics, transportation of the equipment, decoupling and coupling of the equipment if it is to be conveyed by road, to the launching of the dredger, to the project execution which is the actual dredging, one must be very time conscious so as not to pay more than there is to be paid for in the project or in the hiring of equipment like lowbed, flatbed, cranes, bulldozers and excavators.

To help you achieve all these, you can engage the services of a good dredge consultant familiar with all these technicalities and knows ways around them. During the project execution, you can't underestimate the importance of timing because most of the dredging parameters are calculated on hourly basis. From the amount of sand, distance or depth that is dredged per hour based on what one is dredging for, to its financing.

I am re-echoing timing as it has everything to do with the topic of the day, which is the timely supply and procurement of spare parts. As a businessman, dredge spare parts is a lucrative business when supplied on time. To deal on dredge spare parts, one has to be patient as it is not a business that will make lots of customers queue up at your shop scrambling for one spare part or another and it is capital intensive. However, once a spare part is sold it makes up the period of inactive time.


Also, there are some parts that sell more frequently like grease packing, anchors, sling wire, side winch rollers, bolts and nuts, floaters and PVC pipes, gaskets, cutter teeth, fuse, solenoids, fuel pumps, transfer pumps, fuel and oil filters, water separator filters, air filters, hydraulic filters, marine rope, etc.

I can vividly remember back in the day when I was still a novice in the business of dredging as a dredge engineer onboard an Ellicott 1170 dredger, a particular part (paraflex coupling) stopped my team and I for working for close to 2 months as it got spoilt and after searching the whole country for this part without success, the company director (was so frustrated due to the fact that every milestone has a time frame) had to import the part from the U.S. Due to logistics, the spare part was further delayed before arriving the country. Fortunately, I improvised one myself which was made locally here in Lagos two days after I had designed it and we were able to complete that milestone within the time frame.

Man-made lakes (reservoirs) are usually built to address one or more specific human needs. 


These needs include municipal and drinking water supplies; when a local government ventures into this at this our present time in Nigeria, where sources of drinking water, housing and some other basic amenities relating to this are close to non-existence.That local government will generate revenue close to what the entire state generates when managed honestly.


As individuals, agricultural irrigation alone has the potentials of creating wealth running into billions in profit when the right crops are produced. With the population in Nigeria, the market is not a problem not to talk of exportation. Commercial fisheries are something you can do alongside agricultural irrigation and not regret it.


Individual or privately owned power generation plant through the lake creation is another goldmine with the epileptic power supply in the nation.


Lakes/water sports and recreation is a multimillion-dollar business in other parts of the world. It will do equally well in Nigeria when managed properly, a lot of people want to unwind relieve pressure, relax and at the same time exercise their bodies through water recreation. People will be happy to pay a substantial amount of money for this. Companies and cooperate bodies will also pay handsomely for water sports and recreation as a part of brand partnership or promotion.

Before any dredging work can commence after the contract must have been awarded and paperwork is done and gotten out of the way, a major work must be done on the supposed dredging site to facilitate the actual dredging when it finally commences. This very important work is called SITE ANALYSIS. It involves several things such as site investigation, survey, sand search, clearing, excavation, etc.


As a local or group of locals, you can make some wealth working as a tour guide to the team of investigators during site investigation and to the team of surveyors during their survey and pegging.


Some of the site owners sometimes award contracts for manual clearing and cutting of logs rather than hiring a swamp buggy which cost nothing less than N 250,000 per day to hire, bulldozers or excavators which cost a lot of money. 

This can generate you some cool millions just like a certain Mr Jude while we were mobilizing Lakowe golf course work made close to N 2million from bush clearing and cutting of logs. It saved the company lots of money in the long run.
