I used to believe that buying a brand-new phone from a recognised brand with authorised service centres in Nigeria meant peace of mind. I deliberately avoid fairly used (Tokunbo) phones because of the uncertainty surrounding their history and condition. I also avoid some smartphone brands because they don't have reliable service centres in Nigeria.

So why should I buy a brand-new Samsung phone with a 2-year warranty and still need a lawyer to get a factory-defective phone replaced?

I purchased my Samsung Galaxy phone from Finet Communication Limited on October 13, 2022. Less than one month later, it developed a serious fault. Flight Mode would activate automatically, disconnecting the mobile network and making calls impossible.

Samsung's own authorised service centre confirmed that it was a factory defect.

What followed was months of frustration, repeated repairs, wasted transportation expenses and endless movement to and from the service centre.

The technical service partner handling the repairs was Best Raya Service.

The phone was repaired up to seven times, although only two repairs were formally documented. Best Raya Service even replaced the phone's panel, yet the original fault persisted.

**This raises a serious question: If the panel was replaced, why did the exact same factory defect continue? Was the actual cause of the problem properly identified and resolved?**

I am not a phone technician, but I believe a customer deserves a clear explanation when repeated repairs fail, especially on a brand-new phone under warranty.

I was patient enough to allow the technicians to do their work repeatedly. But how many times should a customer accept repairs on a phone that developed a confirmed factory defect within its first month?

Eventually, I requested a replacement, but Samsung refused.

After further disagreements and unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter, I instructed my lawyer to write to the parties involved.

It eventually took legal intervention before a replacement was arranged, yet the dispute was still not satisfactorily resolved.

Now, here is my question to Nigerians:

**How many ordinary Nigerians can afford to spend millions of naira pursuing legal proceedings because a phone worth less than ₦1 million developed a factory defect within its first month?**

What exactly is the purpose of a 2-year warranty if a customer must endure repeated unsuccessful repairs and involve a lawyer before getting a replacement?

Finet Communication Limited, the retailer that sold me the phone, also failed to provide the assistance I expected. I believe they should have played a more active role in resolving the complaint.

Instead, during the legal proceedings, Finet filed a ₦7 million counterclaim against me. Thankfully, the court overruled that counterclaim.

Nearly four years later, I am still seeking a fair resolution.

My experience has completely changed how I view Samsung's warranty promises. Personally, I would rather consider another smartphone brand than go through this ordeal again.

I am not saying every Samsung customer will have my experience. But if you're buying a Samsung Galaxy because the carton says "2 Years Warranty," please don't assume that getting a satisfactory remedy will necessarily be easy.

Samsung manufactured the phone. Finet sold it to me. Best Raya Service handled repeated repairs, including the panel replacement. Yet I was the one left dealing with months of stress and a prolonged legal dispute.

**A warranty should protect customers, not leave them facing years of frustration.**

Before buying your next Samsung Galaxy phone, ask yourself: If something goes wrong within the first month, can you afford the time, stress and legal expenses I have endured?

If the phone develops a fault, go to a Samsung service center to get a replacement and don't just go and start repairing it. I bought a Samsung tablet from Dubai, the screen got damaged, they replaced the screen for me at zero cost.

Common sense should tell you that not only on the grounds of ill health, even when she is overwhelmed with work, you should step in and help out, except if there is someone like your child or some house help. If he is incapacitated financially, the wife should step in to help too, if not, she is not a kind woman. This afternoon, the above news was pushed to the frontpage of Nairaland and I was amazed and disappointed at the ignorance of majority of the comments that greeted the news. I am disappointed at the ignorance and arrogance of the guys on Nairaland.

It is not only appalling but a sad indication that whether we like it or not, the so-called #OlodoUprising is here and indeed a bomb expected to detonate at any time in the country.

It is sad that despite that we are in the era of AI, folks can not consult this readily available tool to seek what "referred visa category" means before rushing to embarrass themselves and their families in the public arena.

Anyway, I have decided to create this post for the purpose of those who may want to know the meaning of the policy and its implication for Nigeria and its citizens.

Referred Visa Category: What does it means?

In Tanzania, the “Referred Visa Category” refers to a special group of nationalities and persons whose visa applications cannot be issued routinely or on arrival. They require prior special clearance/approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration (mainland Tanzania) or the Commissioner of Immigration (Zanzibar) before a visa can be granted.

Key features
1. Applicants from these countries cannot get a visa on arrival.

2. The application is “referred” (sent for higher-level review and security/administrative clearance) to immigration headquarters.

3. Processing takes longer than a standard e-visa or ordinary visa.

4. Approval is not automatic.


Who falls under the Referral Visa Category
Nationals of specific countries (the official list is reviewed and can change). Recent official and embassy sources commonly include:
Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Chad, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic), Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Somaliland, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen, and others.

What is the implication of a country being being removed from Referral Visa Category
When a country is removed from Tanzania’s Referral (or Referred) Visa Category, the main implication is that its nationals no longer need special prior clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration (or the Zanzibar equivalent). They move to the ordinary/standard visa process.

IS IT A GOOD OR BAD NEWS FOR NIGERIA AND ITS CITIZENS

It is good news for the nationals of the country that has been removed from Tanzania’s Referral (Referred) Visa Category.

Why it is positive?

Travel becomes simpler and faster. Citizens no longer need the extra special clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration (or Zanzibar equivalent).

They move to the ordinary/standard visa process (e-visa or regular application), which has shorter processing times and fewer extra requirements.

There is less risk of delays or uncertainty caused by the referral review.

Travellers can book flights and accommodation with more confidence, without the previous strong advice to wait for special approval first.

It signals improved bilateral relations or reduced security concerns regarding travellers from that country.

What it does not mean
It does not make the country visa-free. Most people still need to apply for and obtain a normal visa. Entry is still subject to normal immigration rules and the final decision of the officer at the port of entry.
