By Rotimi Ojomoyela Ado-Ekiti —The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has assured Nigerians that the skyrocketing prices of foods in the country will soon crash, saying specifically that that of rice will happen within the next two weeks. He disclosed that the Federal Government will stop importation of rice this year. Explaining the reason behind the policy, Ogbeh hinted that the country has enough internal production that can sustain home consumption and meet foreign exchange earnings that can guarantee diversification of the economy. In order to further boost internal production of the commodity and enhance the country’s comparative advantages in rice and yam production, Ogbeh stated that the federal government will sign a memoranda of understanding with Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD) and Ekiti State Government in the two critical sectors. He unveiled his Ministry’s intention to supply ABUAD with 20 tonnes of rice seedlings in the next planting season to boost rice production internally. The Minister said these in Ado Ekiti at the weekend during a visit to ABUAD’s farm and Ekiti State government . Ogbeh said the current economic recession being experienced under Buhari’s government has helped the federal government to think outside the box and had succeeded in bringing the deserved revolution to the agriculture sector. According to him, “Of recent, prices of diesel increased from N130 pr litre to about N280, which makes the cost of tractors to move up to N14 million from N7 million. The interest rate on every loan given to farmers also went up, so the aggregate of all these factors caused increase in the prices of food items. “We are concerned with the plights of Nigerians. We knew that many are hungry but we are working round it because it doesn’t speak well of us in government that people are hungry.” The ABUAD’s founder, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), praised Buhari’s administration for bringing revolution to the country’s agriculture sector that had been neglected by successive governments, describing the current economic recession as a blessing in disguise. “To support the FG initiative , this university for the past three years have been holding annual Afe Babalola Agriculture EXPO(ABAFEX), where we give N1m to the best farmer in Ekiti and N250,000 to the best in 16 local governments. “This year, we intend to hold Rice summit with intention to expose Ekiti potentials in the production of the commodity”, Babalola said. The deputy national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Peters Adeyimi has stated that the federal government should do what it must to approve N56,000 minimum wage for workers. “This N56, 000 minimum wage will determine who gets elected and re-elected again. The time of reckoning is drawing nearer”, he warned. Adeyimi said even in the present day Nigeria, N56,000 is nothing to write home about, considering how the prices of things have skyrocketed in the market. According to him, the cost of drugs and food stuff has tripled since the last minimum wage law was passed in 2011 and the government is not moved by the development. He said, “For us in the in the movement, if we are to make that demand right now, that clearly is not going to be labour’s demand. In Nigeria today, 56, 000 is clearly not what any Nigerian can survive on. Labour is convinced that N56, 000 minimum wage is doable. “It is doable in the sense that when you put all the indices and parameters in place, you find out that N56, 000 cannot give a comfortable life to an average worker in a month. Let us look at what we are talking about, we are talking about a workers who has children, he has to pay school fees, healthcare and has other dependents. “The cost of drugs and food stuff has tripled since the last minimum wage law was passed in 2011.I have said severally that you also need to put into consideration even the worth of our currency, the Naira which government policies have batardised. I have said again and again that those in government don’t want to pay good salaries so that they will have enough to steal. “If Nigerian workers are well paid, some of these surpluses that are being looted won’t be there. You find today, with all the efforts of the current administration, under President Buhari that the anti corruption agencies have unearthed so much startling revelation of massive looting of our treasury.” Source: http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/17/new-minimum-wage-will-determine-workers-will-vote-2019-nlc/ |
Eight people were killed on Monday when a female suicide bomber detonated her explosives at a mosque in northeast Nigeria, in the latest attack in the restive region. The head of the Borno state emergency management agency, Ahmed Satomi, said the blast happened at about 5:30 am (0430 GMT) in the London Ciki area of Maiduguri, which has been at the epicentre of Boko Haram violence since 2009. "She killed eight people and injured 15 others. The mosque was being guarded by civilian JTF (joint task force militia) during prayers," he told AFP. "Unknown to them, the girl was being pursued from another part of town by residents who were suspicious of her movement at the time. "When she approached the mosque, they demanded that she stop to be searched but she suddenly bolted into the mosque and set off her bombs." Three other female suicide bombers were located in Maiduguri at about the same time, said Satomi. Two were killed in the Mammanti area as they tried to cross the ditch around the city perimeter while another set off her explosives in the suburb of Simari, he added. It is the second time in a week that four female suicide bombers have sought to cause carnage in Maiduguri. Last Monday, at least 19 people were killed and 23 others injured when four women set off their bombs in the Molai Kolemari area of the city. Boko Haram has increasingly used women and young girls as human bombs as they have been forced out of captured territory due to a sustained military counter-insurgency. Maiduguri has been repeatedly attacked in recent months, with mosques, markets, camps for those displaced by the conflict and other civilian "soft" targets hit regularly. By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA-Federal government may exhume the body of Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo, a serving corps member in Kano State who died in controversial circumstance to ascertain the cause of her death. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday ordered for investigation into her death. Speaking with State House Correspondents on Thursday, the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Solomon Dalong who however corroborated the official report of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC on the death said that in view of the different reports that have emerged, an autopsy might be an option to ascertain the true cause of the death. “The report given by NYSC is normal and natural, that after investigation they must present their own report on what has happened but in view of the fact that they are many versions on what led to the death of the NYSC member, it would be fair to look at another version of what happened to be sure of what actually transpired. “It doesn’t have to do with not trusting the process but gauge the report alongside other opinion. Then we will now be able to tell Nigerians that this is the circumstances on how she died. “Don’t forget that the report of the NYSC has no autopsy and an independent investigation will require an autopsy and now the autopsy alongside the report will balance and it will fortify the conclusion the government will make”, he said. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/fg-exhume-body-late-nysc-member-autopsy/

The United States Consul-General in Nigeria, Mr John Bray, on Thursday said that Nigeria would be able to overcome her current economic recession by attracting more Foreign Direct Investment.Bray gave the advice in Lagos at this year’s Annual Lecture of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association. The theme of his keynote address was “The Challenges and Opportunities of Managing a Recessionary Economy: The American Experience’’. “As the most populous country on the continent and as the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria clearly stands to gain from increasing its attractiveness to foreign investors. “As in the case for the U.S. economy, FDI offers much to contribute to Nigeria’s ability to grow its economy and increase its global competitiveness. “I hope that Nigeria will use the current recession as an opportunity to adopt and implement economic reforms to address challenges that existed before the current recession,’’ he said. Bray said that the U.S. would continue to be the number one destination for foreign direct investment because of foreign investors’ confidence of fair treatment, profit repatriation and rule of law. According to him, the United States remains committed to helping Nigeria realise her economic potential. Chief Olabintan Famutimi, Patron of the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association, who noted that recession was a universal phenomenon, said that Nigeria’s current economic recession was self-inflicted. Famutimi said that Nigeria had over these years depended solely on revenue from crude oil, whose price was being determined by fluctuating international market forces. The Association’s Patron also noted that when crude oil was booming, Nigerian governments paid lip-service to economic diversification, as well as neglected other sectors of the economy. “Recession is a universal phenomenon and almost all countries have had times weathering the storms of it, including the countries that are regarded as the most prosperous today. “ The United States, for instance, in her 238years of existence have spent cumulatively, about 87years in recessions, cueing from about 47 recessions recorded. “But importantly, the United States has on various occasions come out better, stronger and more defined. “We must also state that Nigeria is a very peculiar nation, whose recession can be described as ‘self-inflicted’, because we walked right into it through careless leadership,’’ he added. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/us-offers-solution-nigerias-economic-recession/ |
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA – Erstwhile National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki, retd, has prayed the Supreme Court to expedite hearing on two appeals he lodged against his continued detention by the Federal Government. Dasuki who has been in custody of the Department of State Service, DSS, since December 29, 2015, is challenging FG’s refusal to release him on bail as ordered by different courts of competent jurisdiction. In a letter he forwarded to the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, the former NSA, through his lead counsel, Mr. J.B. Daudu, SAN, begged the apex court to accelerate hearing on his bail request in order to stop the government from further infringing on his fundamental human rights. He told the Acting CJN that the two pending appeals which he filed in August, were in compliance with the Supreme Court practice directions. In the letter dated November 30 and received by the apex court on December 6, Dasuki, further prayed the court to exercise its discretion in his favour by granting quick determination of the two appeals because of their peculiar nature. Daudu in the letter recalled that his client was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on charges of breach of trust, criminal misappropriation and sundry offences before two high courts of the Federal Capital Territory between September and December last year. He stated that following a not guilty plea by his client, the two courts granted him bail and the conditions perfected by the appellant. The letter explained that no sooner had Dasuki perfected his bail conditions than the DSS operatives swooped on him and abducted him at Kuje prison gate. He said his client have since then been in detention without trial. Daudu told Justice Onnoghen that the only reason FG adduced to justify “the abduction” of his client, which was not backed by any law, was that Dasuki posed a security risk. The letter read in part; “The same government having breached his right to fair trial by not allowing him proceed on bail to have adequate time and facilities to prepare his defence, interfered with his constitutionally guaranteed presumption of innocence by continuing to detain him without trial has insisted on several occasions to proceed with the charges afore described, knowing fully well that the appellant has no access to documents with which he would wish to defend himself. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/dasuki-writes-acting-cjn-seeks-speedy-hearing-bail-appeal/

This man and his son are both in JSS1C in the school where I serve as a youth corps member in Minna, Niger State. He comes early to school and will always be attentive. I’ve known him since January but it was today I decided to ask him some questions. He cannot speak English language, so I had to use a girl who understands Hausa, English, and Yoruba languages as my interpreter and she really helped. Read the excerpts of our conversation below… A: What’s your name Baba? Y: Yusuf Umar A: And your son’s name? Y: Abdulraaj Umar A: Baba, how old are you? Y: I won’t mention my age because other students are here, except if you want me to reduce it. A: (I wouldn’t give up on that easily, so I devised another means…) How old is yaro (your son)? Y: 13years A: So how old were you when Raaj was born? Y: I can’t remember A: (I paused… gave him an uncompromising look that says “I won’t give up”) Y: (he held a boy beside him…) I was exactly like this boy when Shehu Shagari became the president (I turned to the boy, asked him his age, he replied “15years” and Baba nodded in agreement. On getting home, I did the calculations and realized that since Shehu Shagari became the president in 1979, Baba was born in 1964, which means he’s 52 years old!) A: How many wives do you have? Y: (gesticulated with his index finger…) One A: What’s her name and where’s she? Y: Her name is Hannatu and she’s is Tayi village A: What’s your occupation? Y: Farming A: What kind of agricultural products do you produce? Y: Guinea corn, millet, tam, and maize. A: Why did you come back to school? Y: (smiles…) I want to finish secondary school so that I can give proper accounts on my farm. A: (smiles back…) What’s your favourite subject? Y: I love all the subjects, especially Mathematics, Agricultural Science (understandable though), and Social Studies. A: How do your classmates and seniors treat you? Y: They respect me. A: How do teachers treat you? Y: They also treat me with respect. A: Has your son ever offended you in school that you had to discipline him the “daddy” way? Y: (laughs…) No A: Will you still marry another wife? Y: My wife is from God. If God gives me another one, I’ll marry, but if God does not, I won’t. I love this man. He’s respectful and humble. He’d always bow to greet me anytime any day. And he treats his son with much care. cc: lalasticlala dominique
